This episode examines how Wichita Public Schools is preparing its educators for the rapidly evolving age of generative AI through deliberate policy development and clear instructional guidelines. Guest Katelyn Schoenhofer, the district's AI Specialist, explains how the organization built a positive culture around AI use by establishing legal policy, creating practical guidance for instructors, and helping staff view generative AI as a responsible and effective tool. She also discusses why educators should focus on the learning process behind student work—rather than solely the final product—when integrating AI into instruction. As part one of a two-episode series, this discussion sets the stage for the next episode focused on classroom-level use.“This podcast is for informational purposes only. You've got a strong teacher, strong strategies—and still, the innovation stalls. What gives? In this episode, we tackle what's really behind resistance in math PD and why most implementation efforts collapse long before proficiency is even possible.Building on our last episode, we unpack how a school we support used the five implementation stages—Non-Use, Awareness, Mechanical, Routine, and Proficient—to move real teacher practice forward in mathematics. You'll hear how assumptions like “math teachers just need to buy in” or “they're too comfortable” miss the point—and how shifting the conversation back to student outcomes changed everything.Listen in to learn:What each of the five stages of implementation looks like in real math classroomsWhy most resistance towards math PD is rooted in fear, fatigue, or flawed systems—not mindsetHow to use department meetings and peer examples to build momentum in mathematicsWhy focusing on student growth—not compliance—creates authentic engagement in math classWhat math leaders can do to provide the right support at the right stageHit play to explore how real school teams are flipping the script on math improvement implementation—and how you can do the same by putting students, not strategies, at the center of your plan. Not sure what matters most when designing math improvement plans? The schools in Steubenville, Ohio, are doing something unusual—in fact, it's almost unheard of. In a country where nearly 40 percent of fourth graders struggle to read at even a basic level, Steubenville has succeeded in teaching virtually all of its students to read well. According to data from the Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford University, Steubenville has routinely scored in the top 10 percent or better of schools nationwide for third grade reading, sometimes scoring as high as the top 1 percent. In study after study for decades, researchers have found that districts serving low-income families almost always have lower test scores than districts in more affluent places. Yet Steubenville bucks that trend.“It was astonishing to me how amazing that elementary school was,” said Karin Chenoweth, who wrote about Steubenville in her book How It's Being Done: Urgent Lessons From Unexpected Schools. This week on Reveal, reporter Emily Hanford shares the latest from the hit APM Reports podcast Sold a Story.
