Rebel Scientist
Rebel Aging: Leslie Kenny of Oxford Healthspan talks autophagy and longevity

Rebel Scientist

Leslie Kenny joined Sarah and Russ to share her knowledge around autophagy, and how it could be the next big think for longevity. Show notes: When we're young, our tissues and gut microbiota produce a magical substance called spermidine, which triggers autophagy. It is so essential to all life that it is found in high quantities in sperm, breast milk, and all plants, especially the endosperm of seeds, where it helps the next generation survive and grow. As we age, our ability to manufacture spermidine declines, but we can still help our body spark the cellular renewal process by supplementing with food-derived spermidine and the other polyamines that naturally occur with it, such as spermine and putrescine.About Leslie: Leslie Kenny is an autoimmune disease survivor and certified health coach. After meeting world-class Oxford scientists with potentially life-changing discoveries, Leslie realized the decade it often takes to get these discoveries from lab to consumer was a decade too long. That's when Primeadine®'s parent company, Oxford Healthspan, was born. She founded Oxford Healthspan to identify anti-aging compounds with strong clinical safety profiles and bring them to market as nutritional supplements. Spermidine is the first of those compounds.Oxford Healthspan was founded by Leslie Kenny, a Southern Californian entrepreneur and Berkeley and Harvard Business School graduate, whose life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis in her 30s. When her doctors told her lupus had a life expectancy of 5 years and that rheumatoid arthritis could only be managed, not cured, she set out to optimize her health as best she could using safe, natural solutions. She went back to school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC, became a Bulletproof Coach under health pioneer, Dave Asprey, and took on health coaching clients around the world. At the same time, she began helping life sciences academics at European universities including Oxford, where she lives, to raise money for their discoveries. It was at a meeting with one such scientist that she learned about a natural compound called spermidine, rich in a traditional Japanese dish she had grown up with, natto. Spermidine was showing great promise supporting health as we age. The science was compelling - one scientist even called it 'an anti-aging vitamin' in a published scientific journal - and it was safe, but because it was natural and food-derived and not a drug which would bring in more money, no one was interested in promoting it.Leslie immediately wanted her octogenarian mother back home in California to take it, especially since natto is very hard to come by (it's quite smelly for one thing!) Unfortunately, spermidine wasn't available in the US or really even known there. Spotting this unmet need, she decided to bring it to the US herself. Today, at age 57, Leslie is living proof that we can get better with age, so long as we take responsibility for our health and meet our doctors halfway. Primeadine® is part of her anti-aging arsenal and she hopes it will become part of yours too.DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for educational and informational purposes only and is solely intended as a self-help tool for your own use.

Our guest for this week is Dayne Barkley, human potential and primal health coach, holistic health entrepreneur, and the founder and CEO of ‘Barkley Eyewear’.Today as a special treat, we have not one, but two conversations with Dayne! One had been recorded live at an event called ‘Get Hacked, Get Hi’ and the other is our followup conversation where we explored the notion of hacking your sleep further.About DayneDayne is a former actor turned biohacker. This huge shift towards the world of health and well-being was sadly motivated by the loss of a loved one. After his grandfather passed away in 2014, he started to explore all sorts of disciplines and techniques that can help us lead a healthier life. His deep dive into the field of health drove him even further from the moment he discovered the Paleo protocol. In recent years, Dayne’s been working hard in the field of health and got certified as a Health and Primal Coach, an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and also a Bulletproof Coach from Dave Asprey’s Bulletproof Training Institute. Some of his main areas of focus include sleep, diet, fitness, cognition, psychology, earthing/grounding, and wearables. In 2018, Dayne founded a company that produces and sells interchangeable blue-blocking glasses called “Barkley Eyewear”. These glasses block out the blue, artificial light which helps regulate the circadian rhythm and allows for better sleeping routines. Aside from proving to be extremely beneficial for sleep-regulation, Dayne's glasses are also very stylish and work great as a fashion accessory. For all members of the Inspired Evolution Tribe, Dayne has set up a wonderful treat - 10% off on all products from his website! The fact of the matter is that we’re surrounded by sources of light that contain a massive disproportion of blue light that is messing with our internal, circadian rhythm. Computers, phones, all sorts of screens and neon signs have created a setting that discourages healthy sleeping routines and patterns.“It sort of tricks the brain that your body is like, “Oh, is it daytime? Is it nighttime?”... It scrambles the clock inside of the human eye.” - Dayne BarkleyWhy Is Sleep So Important? As we slide over into the topic of sleep, we go over why it plays such a huge role in our health and what we need to do in order to devise a routine that can help us rest better and recharge optimally. Dayne acknowledges the slight variations in our needs for sleep which is why he suggests objective measurements. This way, we can precisely figure out the right amount of sleep per day we need individually. “It doesn’t matter what your genetics are, it’s universal, across everything… We’re designed to sleep a certain amount of hours. There’s a very small group that can actually get away with 6 hours of sleep.” - Dayne BarkleyTop Tips for Hacking Your SleepAs a sign off from the live portion of our podcast, Dayne shares his top tips for hacking your sleep!“Move away from the coil mattresses - they’re not beneficial at all... If you don’t want to switch off the power in your house, at least go turn off your Wi-Fi router at night... And then, keeping your room as dark and as cool as possible - that’s a really important part.” - Dayne BarkleyThe Importance of Meal Timing for SleepDayne places the timing of his meals throughout the day as one of the key elements of his health transformation. Years of research and experimentation have contributed to his success and he’s selflessly sharing his results with us!“It’s going off of what I’ve learned and now I’ve seen the actual impact… And I truly believe it’s actually quite a universal approach as well.” - Dayne BarkleyThe Power of Routines and HabitsCreating healthy habits and routines seems to be at the foundation of our conversation. Here, Dayne explores additional tips that can help us develop and strengthen them.“Create some sort of a routine and structure and then make your environment pull for that as well.” - Dayne BarkleyHow to Prevent Jet Lag For all those frequent flyers out there, Dayne shares the routine that has helped him deal with jet lag over the years!“Consciously, one of the things I tend to go for is definitely grounding… At least 10 minutes would be ideal. And then another big factor would definitely be fluid intake.” - Dayne BarkleyListening Out for Your Inner GuidanceIn this section, we talk about the significance of listening to your inner guidance and Dayne’s personal experience can attest to that.“What I’ve come across in my personal experience and the key that’s just really resonated with me is turning within and having that inner guidance… I just truly believe that accessing and cultivating that inner guidance has been enormous for me.” - Dayne BarkleyThe Challenges of Sticking to Healthy PracticesWe are not perfect and so everyone has experienced the challenge of sticking to a plan or a strategy. Unhealthy habits challenge our plans each day and Dayne sees the solution in learning to differentiate our inner guidance from rationalization.“Trying to differentiate between your inner guidance and what is there to support you and what is just pathogenic bacteria trying that wants to feed you more sugar in your diet…” - Dayne BarkleyMeals That Provide Emotional NourishmentDayne talks passionately about the emotional nourishment a meal can provide us with and describes how the energy of the preparation process can make a difference. Cooking with love is something that is being transferred to the meal making it a uniquely enjoyable and exciting experience.“We’re beyond physical beings… It’s important to respect the temple that we’ve been given… But there are also other layers - emotional, spiritual as well that… We get some sort of enjoyment and excitement from eating with the people we love. There’s food that’s made with love!... Made from this place of that energy I believe gets transferred into the food.” - Dayne Barkley Dayne’s Message of Inspired EvolutionIs this an action-packed episode or what??? Dayne really demonstrates his biohacking abilities and the whole conversation is just full of delightful tips and tricks you can implement in your daily life in order to improve your sleep, regulate your circadian rhythm, and boost your overall health. For this week’s message of Inspired Evolution, we’ll highlight yet again the amazing power of habits and routines, along with the magnificent role they play in personal transformation:“Most importantly, be conscious and do things that create a habit that you can build upon into your routine.” - Dayne Barkley See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

His advice for fellow parents who have children that constantly use cell phones and other wireless devices. In-person retreats he puts on in a natural, beautiful setting free of wireless radiation where people learn primal biohacking and ancestral techniques for better health. Why biohacking is actually a form of self-love and care for the mind, body, and soul. Power Quotes From The Show "Don't wait until you're sick to get healthy. If you love yourself enough, you're going to understand that you are connected to everything on this planet and you're going to connect yourself consciously to those things and express it to the world through your thoughts, actions, and words." - Thaddeus Owen Wireless Radiation "There are many effects from wireless radiation but the only way cell phones are regulated for safety is through whether or not they heat the body like a microwave oven. If your body heats up while using a cell phone, they call that "damaging" but that is not how wireless radiation affects the body. It affects the body through at least four different mechanisms and the higher the frequency and the more power you put behind it, the more damaging it will be. There are over 5,000 peer-reviewed scientific studies showing the biological effects of wireless radiation like those from cell phones, WiFi routers, and Bluetooth." - Thaddeus Owen (PMF) Wavelengths "Because our bodies are tuned to wireless radiation, it can be done in a way that heals the body. There are healing wavelengths that people are using all of the time such as Polarization-Maintaining Fiber (PMF) wavelengths. Can you use a cell phone and a WiFi router on a healing frequency? Yes! Are we doing this? No, and one has to question why that is." - Thaddeus Owen Advanced Technology "The more you dive deep into the primal ancestral and the more we look into this advanced technology, the more we need to realize who we are and put that energy out there because microwave radiation is just wireless frequencies and we can say it harms us but what if that was the most biologically adaptive frequency that we're able to change through our connection, entanglement, thoughts, and actions to be positive. Microwave radiation might just be something that can heal you instead of thinking of it in a harmful way but you can only do this if you are connected, centered, and looking at both the ancestral and the modern to integrate those two things to live in this modern world but in a way that you show up from your true self and really, deeply connect with others." - Thaddeus Owen  Links From Today's Show Sunlighten Saunas Paleo f(x) FitCon Cell Phone Radio Frequency Radiation - National Toxicology Program (NTP) BioInitiative Report New patent points towards self-healing displays from Motorola Can You Eat Celery Seed? And natural light is the most important environmental cue that helps to synchronise our biology to the 24 hour, or circadian rhythm. But in the 21st century, artificial lighting, technology and 24/7 society has separated us from nature, and as a result, many of us, as a result of spending too much time indoors, too much time in front of screens, or staying up too light, suffer the health consequences of disrupting our circadian rhythms. In today's podcast we talk to biohacker Thaddeus Owen, who for the last 12 years has been studying, and implementing ways to achieve optimal health, including using the latest research into how light affects our physiology and our sleep. In this episode we go in-depth into explaining some practical ways to improve your sleep health, and general well-being with 'light hacking' including: tips and strategies for achieving optimal sunlight exposure in the morning and throughout the day how sunlight contains information that triggers hormone production at different times during the day how to choose the best pair of blue light blocking glasses comparing blue light blocking apps like F.lux and Iris and lots more. The health and wellness world can be a very confusing place at times, especially when it comes to the rise of self-proclaimed health experts who may not always have your best health and wellness in mind. This ocean of information online leads millions of people to the false-promised land every day from clickbait sites, facebook ads, and even more concerning now with a 2017 trend emerging towards getting the body, abs, and fitness people want in weeks rather than months, there is a new segment of our industry that is growing fast: Biohacking. But do the biohacking claims about using wires, lights, pills, tubes and devices truly stack up against the power of doing the deeper emotional inventory around why someone's health suffered in the first place? What is our body's response to blue light and how do we biohack for wellness in the EMF/WiFi congested and artificially lit up world that so many work and live inside of? Can we combine biohacking with the physical and emotional intelligence needed to live life well? Join us on Wellness Force Radio 143 as we answers these questions and explore the truth about biohacking with Thaddeus Owen, Co-Founder of PrimalHacker.   JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST   "Everyone's truth and exploration of life is on a different path. You must understand yourself and your own truth by seeking the things that will build you up from the inside out." - Thaddeus Owen "I understood from a young age that having a powerful body lead to a more powerful and clear mind and how much eating and movement had to do with how we show up in the world." - Thaddeus Owen "I can't work in a job that doesn't provide some kind of benefit to humanity, and that's why founded PrimalHacker." - Thaddeus Owen "We see people dead on gurneys all the time that have six pack abs, have run marathons, and might look amazing; outwardly there were Adonis's is but inwardly they were not healthy. To me, real wellness comes from the inside. How comfortable do you feel in your own skin? How excited are you about life and exploring all the possibilities around you? Wellness to me is being curious, being excited to get up every day, and being comfortable with who you are from the inside out." - Thaddeus Owen "A lot of people want to get healthy and well quickly so they tend to copy someone else who has had biohacking success, but they don't actually know for themselves why they're doing it." - Thaddeus Owen There is increasing concern about the types of problems that might be caused by our constant exposure to blue light, from computers and televisions and other modern technology. By cutting out the blue light, Thaddeus Owen says he sleeps much better and reduces potential problems with vision or cancers. Thaddeus is a sustainability manager, a national leader in developing a zero-waste philosophy within industry and turning sustainable ideas into reality. Along the way, he has become a passionate advocate for responsible use of technology and our daily encounters with blue light. He wears sunglasses indoors and at night, and thinks the rest of us should too. About Thaddeus Owen Thaddeus began his journey outdoors, camping and fishing as a boy in the Adirondacks and Central NY forests. After a decade spent developing pharmaceutical products, he just couldn’t face another day adding terrible ingredients like high fructose corn syrup and numerous red dyes into children’s medicine. He shifted gears and engineered a successful work from home assignment following Tim Ferriss’s 4 Hour Workweek. From there, he was able to find a way to incorporate more movement, nature and sunshine into his work environment. After learning about biohacking from the man who coined the term, Dave Asprey, Thaddeus healed his own anxiety, lowered his blood pressure and fixed his sleeplessness using biohacking, PrimalHacking and Qigong. He spends his free time experimenting on himself in hopes of helping others on their journey. He writes about his experiments on PrimalHacker.com. He also spends time with his two boys learning martial arts, shooting arrows at targets and hiking. Catherine is here today with Lane Kennedy, The Bulletproof Coach! About Lane Kennedy Over the years I've come to know that I have a single intention, that intention is to help people. Simple, right? No fame, no glory, no outlandish recognition, simply helping people become better at who they are in the world. The past twenty years have been rife with practical experience, while mastering and acquiring knowledge that is required to live in today's overstressed tech'd world. I've been fortunate enough to spend hundreds of hours learning about hacking our human potential. I was one of the first women to go through Dr. Sara Gottfried's Hormone Cure practitioner course, learning the Gottfried protocol while gaining a deeper understanding of the female's delicate hormonal cascade, and the many imbalances that occur at any given time. Since I'm not one to stop learning, it was only an obvious choice to become a Certified Bulletproof Coach when fellow biohacker, Dave Asprey, opened the doors to a coaching practicum that has been mind blowing! What this all boils down to is this — I've had the opportunity to sit with people from around the world and listen to them unravel and heal from unhealthy, sedentary lifestyles, watch others gain independence and grow, help mothers regain control of their hormones, and find balance with the many obstacles of motherhood, and help men and women build million dollar businesses, and grow incredible communities. Yes, I help people, it's my job. You know when you go to a cocktail party or a networking event and that stranger asks you, “What do you do?” My answer is simple, it's this: “I help people mindshift into being more. Once you start making clear decisions in your life, everything will change. Want me to help you with that?” Find Out More About the Upgraded Woman Lane Kennedy on Facebook The Upgraded Woman - Website Lane Kennedy on Instagram @lanekennedylevy Lane Kennedy on Twitter @lanekennedy Lane on Pinterest Ready to find out how you can upgrade yourself?
