Six million people in America are experiencing Alzheimer's. Two-thirds of them are women. My guests, Maria Shriver and Dr. Lisa Mosconi, are championing an increase in research, raising awareness and providing resources about this topic to find out why. The Alzheimer's spotlight falls twice yearly because it's just that important: November for National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and National Family Caregivers Month, and June for Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. A lot of the research happening to understand Alzheimer's can benefit everyone. It can teach you how to lessen inflammation in your brain and get a handle on or prevent immune and metabolic brain disease. When you learn how to do that, you unlock cognitive performance and longevity. Maria and Dr. Mosconi offer some great insight and practical tips.Maria Shriver is a champion of Alzheimer's awareness. For two decades she's been reporting, writing and fundraising for it, specifically relating to how it impacts women. She founded the The Women's Alzheimer's Movement, a nonprofit that brings together doctors, researchers and brain experts to support Alzheimer's research, clinical trials, and information sharing. It also provides public education, prevention tips and tools for brain health.“I think what happens is that there are small moments along the way that we all disregard,” Maria says. I think the challenge to be present in our own lives is a challenge, really, for all of us. The challenge to take note of our health is a challenge for all of us.”Dr. Mosconi is a neuroscientist and neuro-nutritionist focused on brain science, the microbiome and nutritional genomics, specifically the early detection of Alzheimer's. Her research on women's neurological health has changed the way science approaches the female brain. She speaks to the more than 10 years of research that shows Alzheimer's starts with negative changes in the brain years – if not decades – before any clinical symptoms emerge.“It's really important to take care of ourselves, and our brains are really one of our most important assets,” Dr. Mosconi says. “And the best way to engage in prevention is now. It's never too late to start, but the sooner we start doing it, the better.”Learn even more about how Alzheimer's affects women and what to do about it:Maria Shriver On Why Alzheimer's Is A Woman's Problem – #497The Women's Alzheimer's MovementThe Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Takes on Alzheimer'sWomen, Menopause and Alzheimer's: XX Brain Connections with Lisa Mosconi, Ph.D. – #675lisamosconi.com“The XX Brain: The Groundbreaking Science Empowering Women to Maximize Cognitive Health and Prevent Alzheimer's Disease”“Brain Food: The Surprising Science of Eating for Cognitive Power”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Those hacks will come from my guest Matteo Franceschetti. Matteo defines high performance—having been a professional skier, high-level tennis player, competitive race car driver and practicing lawyer. He didn't get much sleep doing all those things, so he co-founded Eight Sleep and set out to create and advanced sleep improvement device so he, and everyone else, could sleep better and perform better. We can all agree: “Sleep is a pillar, a fundamental pillar for your health,” Matteo says.Eight Sleep tracks biomarkers that measure your sleep quality. Then it uses machine learning to make automatic adjustments to your sleep environment. This helps you optimize your sleep, get the reset and recovery your body needs, and well, wake up feeling better than you have in years. Best of all, you don't actually have to do anything. You just go to sleep, exactly like you did last night, and the technology does all the sleep hacking for you. TIME Magazine named Eight Sleep one of its “Best Inventions” of both 2018 and 2019, and Fast Company listed it as one of the most innovative companies of 2018. They're a sleep hacking company making big inroads into understanding and regulating your body's temperatures while sleeping. This affects your REM sleep the most.“While you are in REM your brain deactivates all the temperature controls in the body,” Matteo explains. “It doesn't let you fall into REM if it's too hot or too cold because you could potentially die. Changing the temperature based on your sleep stages and the different stages of the night is fundamental to maximize your deep and REM stages.”And Eight Sleep has a fix for that.“Based on your sleep stages and based on your biometrics, we adjust your body temperature during the night,” Matteo says. “It's not that we are inventing the wheel. Your body is already changing temperature during the night. It's part of your physiological process. We just enhanced that process to maximize your sleep performance.”And then I wanted to know, “How many hours of sleep per night do you think you can save people, by just changing temperature?” The point isn't necessarily to get less sleep, but it's to live more. Right? If you just got everything you needed and it was as good as what you have today, but you had enough time to do two hours of reading or learning every day or meditating or parenting or whatever else, it's not about working more necessarily. It's just about living more. It's exciting to talk to Matteo because he brings a whole bunch of new biohacking ideas to the table, er bed. He and I get into a bunch of sleep topics during this conversation, including:How you can instantly increase your deep sleep by 40%, starting tonightHow you can reset your energy levels in the morning just by regulating your sleep temperature at nightHow you can compress sleep down to 5-6 hours a night, while actually getting more rest and recoveryWhy sleep consistency matters (and is still the hardest thing for people to do, well, consistently}Why machine learning is the future of personalized healthIf your sleep could use an upgrade, check out this episode for hacks you can implement right away and learn about what's next in sleep technology. He gives you actionable tips that help you unlock limitations you may be putting on yourself so you can move your life upward and forward. (Similar to something I like to tell my team is great momentum: “up and to the right.”) World leaders, military generals, business executives, philosophers, and hip-hop moguls alike revere Robert's books. After writing about mastery and power for more than two decades, he's now become a TikTok sensation and the universal truth for a new generation. He's one of my favorite authors who's profoundly influenced my own life and been on the podcast twice before. Both episodes are must listens: The 48 Laws of Power – #380 and The Laws of Human Nature – #575. I asked him back to talk about his latest book: “The Daily Laws: 366 Meditations on Power, Seduction, Mastery, Strategy, and Human Nature.” “In “The 48 Laws of Power,” I talk about deception and con artists,” Robert says. “But in The Laws of Human Nature, it's almost about self-deception, how we're con artists with ourselves, how we create an image of ourselves as being morally right, being a good person, being intelligent, being rational, being empathetic. Whereas in fact, we're usually quite far below that ideal. … Because your default position is to always look externally and blame other people.”In “The Daily Laws,” he distills the best of his previous books and never-before-published material in to one amazing life guide for you. He lays out themes for each month of the year: Power, seduction, persuasion, strategy, human nature, toxic people, self-control, mastery, psychology, leadership, adversity and creativity. Within these themes he features a “daily law” for you to follow.“By not looking at ourselves in an honest way, and glossing over our own flaws and weaknesses, we become trapped in patterns of behavior that we cannot control,” Robert says in his new book. “As the years go by, and the misreadings, missteps, and unrealistic decisions pile up, we can become bitter confused, and damaged.”“The Daily Laws” is designed to reverse [these] toxic patterns and reconnect you to reality,” Robert says. “It takes aim at the various delusions we have all absorbed and seeks to attune your mind instead to the most entrenched traits of human nature and how our brains actually operate.”Listen on for the truth bombs.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How Postbiotics Upgrade Your Mitochondria – Dr. Anurag Singh : 877

SPECIAL OFFER FOR THE HUMAN UPGRADE™ LISTENERSGo to https://timelinenutrition.com and use code UPGRADE10 to get 10% off the Urolithin A subscription plan of your choice.IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™……I'm going down a rabbit hole of exciting scientific research and clinical studies supporting Urolithin A's influence on your mitochondrial health. The short version? Urolithin A stimulates mitophagy and renews your mitochondria. Specific big things to know? It upgrades your cells, your strength levels and offers pretty powerful anti-aging benefits. And a fun thing to know? The origin story of Urolithin A has to do with beavers. (!)To find out the basis of Urolithin A and its relationship to pomegranates, check out my previous podcast featuring two experts on the subject: How to Get Fitter Cells, Stronger Muscles and a Longer Life – Timeline Nutrition with Dave Asprey – #772.This time, I've invited Dr. Anurag Singh to the show. His expertise lies in clinical development and translational research. That means he translates new discoveries in science into real-world stuff you can actually use. He's worked for several consumer health and biotech companies; authored more than 30 articles for top science journals; and designed and led more than 40 clinical trials over the last 15 years. As Chief Medical Officer of Amazentis, the parent company of Timeline Nutrition and the maker of Mitopure, a Urolithin A product. “A lot of times in the nutrition world, people put extracts and blends of probiotics together and they just give it to healthy people and expect magic to happen,” says Dr Singh. “Here, we've actually done the deep dive of the signs and how this molecule hits mitophagy and mitochondrial health. Then, bringing it to human translation and commercialization. This is really the holy grail for real world evidence.”He's spent seven years focused on Urolithin A research and clinical trials. His initial round of research with Urolithin A showed that it could increase aerobic endurance and increase grip strength. Urolithin A also is the first postbiotic shown to repair mitochondrial health via mitophagy. Mitophagy is the process of renewing your mitochondrial growth as you age. As healthy mitochondria get older they accumulate free radicals and reactive oxygen species. They lose shape and stop communicating with one another, too. These faulty mitochondria have need to be replaced. Urolithin A revs up the mitochondrial recycling.Dr. Singh explains how you can get the benefits of Urolithin A and how to take it to achieve results.“Our gut microbiome is very complex ecosystem with hundreds of millions of different species interacting with each other,” explains Dr. Singh. “They need to be interacting in perfect harmony to release these postbiotics, which is the way I look at it is the perfect gut health relationship within the microbiome. So it's not one bacteria. It's not one strain that you can isolate and give. It's really got to be multi-species. I think you can probably conceptually find that strain or probiotic that could do it, but the process will be so inefficient that the best way is to short circuit it and provide the postbiotic, which is Urolithin A, directly in a pill or in a food product.” Another direction for Urolithin A is sports performance. Amazentis teamed up with renowned researcher Dr. Louise Burke in Australia to look into how Urolithin A affects mitochondrial health in athletes. Those results will be available in 2022.The future of Urolithin research keeps going in exciting new directions, including brain health. “So, there's a lot of research going on around this molecule,” Dr. Singh says. “[The] Buck Institute of Aging in California just got a multimillion grant from the National Institute of Health to study the effects of Urolithin A on the cognitive aging and how it can reverse some of the neuronal circuitry to look youthful. So we are actively looking at it and keeping our eyes and ears open for exactly feedback like this because brain cells also after muscle cells have the highest number of mitochondria that decline with aging.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Dr. Casey Means started her career as a surgeon, where she saw firsthand, day after day, the devastating long-term consequences of poor metabolism, from cardiovascular issues to cancer. She decided to refocus her career on helping people prevent metabolic disease in the first place, instead of treating the results. So, she began researching the causes of metabolic disorders. She quickly discovered a bigger and more subtle problem existed than she'd even realized. “A recent UNC study estimated that 88% of American adults have at least one biomarker of poor metabolism,” she says. “And this is likely part of the reason why nine out of 10 of the leading causes of death in the U.S. are related to, or worsened by, dysregulated blood sugar levels.” What does this lead to? “Healthcare costs are going up each year...and we're getting sicker, fatter, and more depressed,” Dr. Casey says. That's why she co-founded Levels Health. Levels created a wearable device that continuously monitors your blood sugar levels, then gives you a personalized nutrition dashboard based on the results. Blood sugar imbalances are a strong predictor of inflammation and long-term metabolic disease. Keeping your blood sugar on an even keel is a powerful way to gain stable energy all day, keep your metabolism running strong, and even lose weight. Everyone's metabolism is different, which is why Levels uses your personal data to make food recommendations. It can tell you which foods to eat, which ones to avoid, the best times to eat, and even whether you're eating too much or not enough. I'm a big believer in quantifying your health. When you have objective numbers about your biology, you can start to tweak things and make them better.Levels gives you the power to measure your blood sugar throughout the day—and Dr. Casey hopes that this kind of insight will help you eat better, lower your inflammation, supercharge your metabolism, and become a stronger, more capable version of yourself. In this episode, you'll also learn about:The worst foods for your blood sugar (quick preview: Chick-Fil-A and Coca Cola are at the top of the list)How your metabolism affects everything from Alzheimer's to acne to erectile dysfunctionWhy the calories-in-calories-out model of nutrition is flawedSimple changes you can make to build a stronger metabolismAnd much more!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If you aren't hacking, tracking, and prioritizing your sleep, it's time to start. Sleep is a pillar of high performance that affects pretty much everything you do. If you want to perform at your best, you have to get deep, restorative sleep. You know that, but are you doing it?I've interviewed many sleep experts on my podcast. (Psst… I even created a 14-Day Sleep Challenge that teaches you how to hack your sleep.) This interview, however, is a bit different. I've invited a new kind of sleep expert on the show.Jack Dell'Accio spent the past 16 years studying mattresses. He set out to hack every aspect of mattresses, from pressure relief to posture support to toxin-free materials. You know that plastic, chemical smell that fills your bedroom when you get a new mattress? That's caused by off-gassing—a combination of volatile chemicals that turn into gas and fill the air in your bedroom as you break in your mattress. Research has found that many off-gassing chemicals are respiratory irritants and can cause you to develop chemical sensitivities[*][*]. They're nasty compounds and you don't want to spend eight hours a night breathing them in. That's where Jack comes in. After years of research, Jack created a new type of memory foam – a natural rubber latex-based foam – that provides support and pressure relief, without the off-gassing irritants that you find in old school memory foam. Jack founded Essentia, the first mattress company that uses materials that are good for your body, your health, and your environment. It's a major upgrade over memory foam, both in terms of sleeping experience and chemical content. Essentia manufactures its mattresses and sleep products in its own GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic factory. These are the two most important certifications when it comes to organic mattresses and organic mattress manufacturing. They've also had their mattresses tested by experts at Johns Hopkins. In today's episode, you're going to learn the science behind building a better mattress, and why upgrading your mattress will improve almost every aspect of your body and brain. Jack and I also cover:The many chemicals hiding in cheap mattresses Why, thanks to a backwards California law, most mattresses contain several pounds of flame retardant chemicals (and how Essentia makes their mattresses without those chemicals.)Why 25% of NHL players use Essentia mattressesThe connection between cheap mattresses and chemical sensitivitiesHow Essentia created a proprietary EMF barrier foam formulaHow a high-quality mattress makes your brain work betterA sleep surface has to have six key elements to establish a sleep environment that regenerates the body during sleep. Essentia mattresses score at the top of all six. Here's what to look for:Temperature Control (natural thermoregulation/ active cooling)Allergy Friendly (allergen-friendly materials)Accelerated Recovery (support and pressure redistribution)Optimized Sleep (adaptive accelerated response to reduce movement interruptions)Organically Clean (clean, non-toxic materials & an organic mineral formula that drives EMF patterns)Proper Posture (eliminates negative space to properly support the back)The mattress you sleep on matters just as much as all the other high-performance lifestyle choices you make. He's the bestselling author of four books on self-development, most recently “Sparked: Discover Your Unique Imprint for Work that Makes You Come Alive.” He also hosts the popular Good Life Project podcast.“I started into this topic two decades ago,” Jonathan says. “The fact that the last two years have dropped literally the entire world into the biggest existential questioning in generations is not something that I saw coming. But we are in that place, as we sit here depending on the research that you look at, anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of people either have quit their jobs or are in the process of quitting or seriously considering it.”He aims to help people realign the work they're paid to do, with the actual work that nourishes them through something called Sparketypes. Knowing your Sparketype also can lessen the fear of a career pivot and show you how to take your enthusiasm for one passion into a different line of work. You then can confidently build a career with a sense of purpose and direction.“[People] may not know what the bargain is that they want to step into,” Jonathan explains. “But what they're getting clear on is the fact that the way that work has made them feel has satisfied certain needs, for sure, security, safety. The more existential needs, which tend to really become more important when we get a little bit further in life, those have generally been set aside. Part of that bargain was maybe later. He went on to build a global business, run ultramarathons, conduct humanitarian work in post-conflict zones, and explore some of the most hostile environments on the planet—from mountains to caves to polar icecaps. “Nature became my playground to explore my fears and ultimately, systematically push through them one inch at a time.”“I craved a high I believed I could only get by living on the edge of life and death,” he says in his book, “Fearvana: The Revolutionary Science of How to Turn Fear Into Health, Wealth and Happiness.” He's also spent years extensively researching neuroscience, psychology and spirituality. He combined his life experience with that research to write “Fearvana” and infused it with ways to transform fear, and its counterparts stress and anxiety, into something much more positive. His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote in the book's foreword, “Fearvana inspires us to look beyond our own agonizing experiences and find the positive side of our lives.” Akshay now teaches people how to overcome their own fears and how to tap into their brain's superpower—neuroplasticity.Sounds good, but how do you really move through stress and attain growth? First, you have to learn to disidentify with fear and suffering by remembering you are not your thoughts, feelings or experiences, Akshay explains. “You are simply the one who experiences them. Through this process it becomes so much easier to create a life of fulfillment, It's a lifelong practice and a great pathway to growth.”You can even learn to "suffer well" in the day-to-day context of your human experience.“I couldn't care less when fear shows up,” he says. “What matters to me is what I do with it once it does. I can let go of the construct I have around the fear and accept it for what it is and then choose what I want to do outside of it.”Take a listen for more tips on how to become fearless. Akshay heads to Antarctica in early November 2021. Learn more about his South Pole journey and how to follow along here. Enjoy!Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? You'll find out how award-winning speaker and author Dr. Patrick Porter developed tools that help your brain access its optimum state through brainwave entrainment. Brainwave entrainment means that different sounds, like Binaural Beats and Isochronic Tones, are pulsed into each of your ears to stimulate your brain into an altered state of consciousness. In a good way! This can improve your focus, energy, relaxation and deep sleep.Using guided meditation, Dr. Porter's BrainTap device uses a neuro-algorithm to synchronize your brainwaves to a specialized sound. That results in full-spectrum brainwave activity. Each session ensures the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections, also known as neuroplasticity.Dr. Porter has been a leader in brainwave entertainment tech for more than three decades years. He previously developed the world's first personal sound and light brain-training machine, the mc2, and created a Behavior Repatterning device. He's written several books about the brain, including: Awaken the Genius: Mind Technology for the 21st Century; Discover the Language of the Mind; Thrive in Overdrive: How to Navigate Your Overloaded Lifestyle; and Awaken Your Flourishing Brain.Dr. Porter continues to widen the scope of what we know about brain capabilities and performance. He says,” We've got this globally world-class brain that can do incredible things for us,” but people often aren't listening to it.“Once we started being able to measure the brain, we could track how the brain changes,” he says. “We know that every three to five seconds, we need to make a change or interrupt the pattern. If not, the brain will go “bye-bye,” – it's like advertising. The brain only has so much.”BrainTap increases your production of neurotransmitters, leading to a more balanced brainwave state. Even if you can't stay in that balanced brain state, the feeling of that optimal mode will stick with you and will be within reach at all times. It's like a flow-state from meditation if you've experienced that. But you don't have to be a meditation expert to experience benefits. BrainTap allows even complete beginners to see immediate progressYou can do the BrainTap sessions at different times of the day when you naturally lose energy, helping you with things like sleep, focus, concentration, mindfulness, memory, stress and anxiety. The sessions also have been shown to increase athletic performance and recovery, and even help with addictions. In this episode, Dr. Porter explains the four elements of BrainTap, including Binaural Beats, Guided Visualization, 0-Cycle Holographic Music and Isochronic Tones. You'll get to geek out on all the ways your brain affects your body (and vice-versa) and learn what you can do to reach your full brainiac potential. “Our brain actually is always syncing to its environment,” Patrick says. “That's why if it's chaotic {that it's] causing some disruption. You have to filter it out. You have to learn how to do that.” Don't miss Dr. Porter's IG Live! Hacking Your Brain with Light and Sound.Enjoy! Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? They did so to keep fear close, see its power and ward it off. Modern-day philosopher Ryan Holiday is here to tell you how to do that in your own modern life by using courage to overcome fear.“You can have that reaction [to fear], but then you also realize, if you don't act on it, if you push through, there's often something on the other side of it,” Ryan says. “Or you realize that the more you expose yourself to it, the less scary it is each time and the less perhaps even that you feel that thing.”Everyone experiences fear, but those who can learn to go beyond it will find room for courage. His most recent book, Fear is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave is compelling and empowering. It breaks down what it means to confront fear, courage and heroism in order to discover your own grace and wisdom. We talk about how to transform fear into courage and the power of choosing the relationship you have with fear.“Man, people get really uncomfortable when something that they were told by their parents, or their church, or their society, or their social media, and all of a sudden, they face profound evidence that it's not true,” Ryan says.Pulling stories from some of the greatest humans in history he talks about how heroism can change the world, and how history can help guide you through contemporary phenomena rooted in fear, like cancel culture and government mandates. I talked to the co-founder of WAVi at the 7th Annual Biohacking Conference in Orlando, Florida. Physicist David Oakley created a device that's used to directly measure brain function and gives you a 360-degree assessment of your brain performance.WAVi is an all-in-one measurement platform. Users get objective information about brain function through EEG, visual ERP, auditory ERP, heart rate variability (HRV), Trail Making, standard assessments and more. This full FDA-regulated Class II device measures biomarkers of your brain with detail and precision in under 15 minutes.“People measure their weight every day, right?” David says. “Step on the scale, “Where am I at today?” So, we should be measuring our brains regularly. Someday there will be WAVi in doctors' offices and you'll check your brain like you check your weight.”For an introduction to WAVi, listen to Bulletproof Radio episode #619: Your Brain Voltage: Measure It, Raise It, Control It. In this interview, David and I go really deep into the science behind WAVi's development. We get into physics, neuroscience, brain data, scientific inquiry and what's exciting about the future of brain performance research. David comes from a long family line of inventors and creators. His own career as a physicist includes research and teaching at universities. He was also a researcher at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and has analyzed data within neutrino astrophysics, a branch of astronomy that observes astronomical objects with neutrino detectors in special observatories. He has published research and articles in the areas of physics, medicine, and art. At mid-life he turned to brain data and created WAVi: a mix of art, science, commerce, and public service. He made the move to study the brain when he met a fellow scientist David B. Jaffe. “He started showing all the [brain] patterns, and I thought, “This is beautiful,” David says. “It's beautiful waves. You can do a lot with it. You can help people. It's about the same as physics, though. It's the same, just voltage versus time series data.”David's now exploring multiple brain topics, including concussions, Alzheimer's, Dementia, and mental health. You'll also find out why P300 continues to be an important signature of cognitive processes. It's a 300 millisecond time frame that measures brain activity. This includes attention, working memory and dysfunction in neurologic and mental disorders. Ongoing research sees it as a potential genetic marker of mental disorders.“As you age this performance drops and the speed drops,” David explains. And then there's voltage activity that's happening in the brain. And if you can assess and measure what's going on in your brain, you can do something about it.So, this is a really big thing. And I want you guys to think about this. Right now you might be saying, "I'm not a brain scientist, I'm just listening to this." But there's, how fast does the brain respond? And how strongly does the brain respond? Because those are different things. And the reason my brain does what it does, I would say is clearly nutrition and mitochondrial enhancement and supplements and all that kind of stuff. It's a fascinating time to be upgrading your brain! “So, 10 years from now, the happy path is that with the brain scan, the artificial intelligence will know you and know what you need to optimize your brain,” David says. “There won't be a question of, in the ideal world, it's not a question of your brain is slowing down. It will know you on day one and say, “This is what you need to do. As long as you stay with this program, you're going to have an optimized brain. It's not going to slow.” That's my 10-year future.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If you have an imbalance in the microbiome inside your mouth and inside your gut, nitric oxide declines and your body can't produce nitric oxide. … Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, it's related to internal health, it's anti-inflammatory, it creates better sleep and better brain function.”Your Gums: “Red light therapy is going to help with the condition of your gums, it's going to improve the overall environment inside your mouth, and it's going to help with the right environment to grow the right bacteria that in the long-term is going to help with nitric oxide production,” Trina says. “Red light therapy actually penetrates your gum tissue and will increase blood flow and reduce inflammation of the gum tissue.”Your Brushing Habits: “Brushing too hard, we don't think about it, but it's common sense, but we still do it because you feel like you need to scrub to get your teeth clean and your gums,” Trina says. “But a lot of people just brush way too hard. It's really a soft motion. The softer you brush, the more you actually stimulate detoxification and increase blood flow. It's like a massage. Sometimes when you massage too hard, you create inflammation, you create more problems. And the softer that you massage, like lymphatic massages, are extremely, there's no depth to them. It's very light touch.” (Even with a sonic toothbrush!)Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts. Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Or why you end up with burnout, bad diets and other things that cause you harm, when you know you'd be better off choosing something else? This episode cuts through the noise, everything you're sold and told to want, and helps you answer those very questions.Luke Burgis researched and studied the theory that underlies your tendency to follow other peoples' wants, called mimetic desire. Explored by prominent French thinker René Girard, mimetic theory of desire says humans don't want anything autonomously and independently. “Girard discovered that we come to desire certain things not through biological drives or pure reason, nor as the longing of our deepest, most authentic selves, but through imitation,” Luke says in his book, “Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life.” Desire, as Girard used the word, does not mean the drive for food or sex or shelter or security. But after meeting those needs, we enter the domain of desire. And knowing what to want is much harder than knowing what to need.”In studying the work of Gerard, Luke realized that his goals and dreams were a product of other people's expectations of him and he was actually following the desire of what he was seeing in others (that's why he was miserable, burnt out, in poor physical health and felt horrible). “The truth is that desires are derivative, contagious, and therefore competitive, and that's why they often lead to conflict,” Luke explains. “The lie is that I want things entirely on my own, uninfluenced by others. By rejecting the truth, I deny the consequences of my desires on other people, and theirs on me.”Luke and I dive into how to get past the innate desires of success and wealth that most of us are taught to value and really move into your own individual dreams and self-desires. “Mimetic desire exists on a spectrum,” he says. “And that there are some things that can't be explained medically at all. Something beautiful like a sunset, or like a beautiful woman that I'm attracted to. There are very clear scientific sort of physiological things going on there. So, let's make a distinction. Mimetic desire exists on a spectrum where those hardwired physiological things like thirst and hunger, those have been met, right? And we're sort of now in a more abstract world.”Armed with this knowledge, you can make better choices about who you trust and build self-awareness around your choices to empower your own life. You can find holistic models that work for you in all areas of your life (not just at your job), and why those models are important to find sooner rather than later.“The constant looking to what other people are doing or saying or wanting, or achieving, is just the fastest way to be miserable for one thing, but also the fastest way to miss opportunities, because we're just constantly looking to our right and our left rather than forward or up,” Luke says.Enjoy! He studies the human microbiome and knows just how much inflammation damages your gut and how your immune system fixes it.He's particularly adept at explaining practical ways to apply the latest science he's uncovering. His expertise lies in the newest frontier in microbiology—gut commensal spore bacteria. He partners with Just Thrive Health on prebiotics, probiotics and other gut health product development. When he was on the show previously, we got into probiotics and immune health. (Don't miss those! Support Immune Health in Two Steps: Modulate Gut Bacteria & Neutralize Inflammation – #677 and Armor-Plated Immortal Probiotics from Space – #629. This time, he makes connections between your microbiome and immune function.“The inflammatory response is the biggest driver of gut related damage that occurs,” Kiran says. “You can also eat foods that are absolutely toxigenic to your microbiome.”The good news? Up to 80 percent of your immune system lies in your digestive tract, Kiran explains. “Your immune system is there, ready and waiting to help with the situation.”In this episode, you'll learn that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is the unknown villain of virtually everything. Kiran says it causes damage to the brain, contributes to metabolic disease, drives Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and is the No. 1 driver of diabetes (to name a few).“LPS is the most pervasive toxin we have to deal with and it's an endotoxin, which is a key because we can't get away from it,” Kiran says.Kiran has a strict research background in the fields of molecular medicine and microbiology. For nearly 20 years, he's conducted dozens of human clinical trials in human nutrition through his research organization: Clinical Research Organization. His recently published leaky gut study showed reversal of gut enteropathy within 30 days. He's now involved with a longer, more extensive leaky gut trial. His current research also includes nine other ongoing human clinical trials. Some test the effect of gut commensal spore probiotics on conditions like Thyroid/Hashimoto's, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and liver failure.Listening to this extensive interview, you'll find out cool stuff, like what faecalibacterium prausnitzii is and how it helps you.“We all have all kinds of damage occurring in our large bowel all the time,” Kiran says. “But if you have faecalibacterium, it's constantly repairing it. If you don't have faecalibacterium, at some point, the damage overcomes the repair and you start getting significant inflammation in lining which then puts you at risk for things like inflammatory bowel disease. Right, so we're constantly battling this state of damage, oxidative stress, inflammation, and all that, and then repair recovery and so on. And then as it turns out, microbes are so important for that repair and recovery phase.”You'll also gain new perspective of your own body biomes and the broader world: “I've always referred to the human system as a walking, talking rainforest,” Kiran says. “We are a holo-biome which is a super organism. We are an organism made up of a collective of organisms that together in a certain balance will function and work. But we are also in constant osmosis with the ecosystem, and we're designed to be that way.”Another positive for your gut and immune health is the vast number of microbial genes in your system.“We have such limited amount of genetic capability as a species,” Kiran says. “We barely have enough genetic material as an earthworm does, and so we're not that cool or sophisticated. What makes us as sophisticated as we are, is the two and a half million or so microbial genes in our system. And so, being able to outsource functionality to microbes is a big part of being human. There are sets of organisms that we have outsourced through the course of evolution, the ability to modulate and monitor the rest of the microbiome. We're finding that when you start putting in these microbes back into your system, you really start getting the positive changes. They start refereeing the ecosystem and making things more balance and improved.” Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts. Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? His extensive research into bone density and strength found that you can approach weight lifting much differently than you may think.“It appears that the most biological adaptation comes from not the area under the curve, the total volume of work you did, but has to do with how quickly did you go from zero to 100 and back to zero,” John says. “So, a very brief spike of almost anything causes way more adaptation than spiking up to 70% and holding it.”Now in Part 2, our conversation dives into John's other findings and lifestyle choices, both as a public figure, a mentor for professional athletes and a fasting enthusiast. We go off the beaten path on a few things:Anabolic rebound after fasting (what fasting does to build muscle mass)Tendon mutations (and how they make people outrageously strong)Taking Viagra (or other non-pharmaceuticals) and carbs to trigger a muscle cell splittingThe difference between fructose, glucose and sucrose (is there any real difference in the body?)We also talk about ways to eat for strength and the quest for longevity that guides him. He's talked about it on Bulletproof Radio before. He's developed a way to put on muscles three times faster than you can by weightlifting. I'm asking him to explain why that matters and what devices and routines can help you get there. He created OsteoStrong and the X3 System, a series of devices that combine rehabilitation devices and advancements in human physiology to build bone density. Why so much focus on bone density?“You're avoiding the potential for fragility fractures later in life,” John says. “The bone you build through the osteogenic loading process, through this heavy loading, you're getting bone built that's going to last in your body for 30 years. It doesn't go away like muscle. Detraining of a muscle starts in 10 days. If you stop working out, you lose your muscle in 10 days. IN THIS EPISODE OF BULLLETPROOF RADIO... We're going deep on all things nootropics. Stacks, timing and what works for your brain.I didn't want to be the guy who made nootropics. I wanted it to be the fact that it's possible, therefore, let's all do it. I mean, take them and let's all make them. We need creators who build stuff that's real. I just want people to see it was real so that we could all build it.You're going to learn a lot in this episode, like:The promise of nootropics vs. the reality of nootropicsProblems with typical nootropicsHow brain chemistry and nervous systems are incredibly uniqueHow every high-performance state has a corresponding neurochemistry stackNine Nootopia base blends that have specific goals and purposesWhy Nootopia nootropics are differentTips to get the most out of your nootropics One of today's guests has been on the show several times to talk about psychobiotics, magnesium, enzymes and blood sugar. As co-founder of BiOptimizers, Matt Gallant keeps researching and innovating ways to keep your whole body healthy. He sees important connections within body systems and finds unique ways to maximum human performance. He especially likes the brain and will be talking about new developments in nootropics that can be customized to your own body system.Matt Gallant: “A lot of nootropics rely on brute force,” Matt says. “They hammer one receptor or one pathway and they just push it to the max which has negative consequences, receptors downregulate, you can have more side effects. As a former addict, I thought, and I was hardwired to believe that more is better. And now I know better and optimal is better. So, it's about really finding the optimal dose for each person. And that's why we're all about customization and personalization.”He's joined by Mr. Noots, his partner in custom nootropic development. Between ages 5 and 10, he built radio, conducted dangerous chemistry experiments and built a Helium-Neon Laser from scratch. His favorite childhood activities were science, chemistry and physics. He spent his 20's in the US Air Force, which was the perfect platform to become an endurance athlete and eventual bodybuilder. Life happened and as Mr. Noots moved from sick to superhuman, he dove deep into performance-enhancing nutrition. That, in turn, led him to become a Chief Product Officer for the mind-enhancing compounds and stacks of nootropics at Nootopia.“This is one of the things where I want everyone listening to just say, "Okay, I admit to myself that it is possible for plant extracts or other compounds to improve cognitive function because it's abundantly obvious,” “says Mr. Noots.SPECIAL OFFER FOR BULLETPROOF RADIO LISTENERSGo to https://nootopia.com/dave and use code DAVE10 to get 10% offWE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS. The conversation dives into the dangers of vegan and vegetarianism, why meat should be a core part of your diet, and how plants might be more harmful to eat than you think. Both put chronic disease at the core of their research and have spent years of research and heart finding eating habits that give you the greatest quality of life. Dr. Paul Saladino is a certified functional medicine practitioner who says yes to meat and no to plants. Dr. Saladino's work promotes the use of science-based information to deeply understand the root causes of illness and provide individualized care that goes beyond traditional pharmacological treatments.“Eat nose to tail with organ meats, with well-raised red meat and organs, and you will thrive,” Dr. Saladino says. “Plants hate us and if we ignore the fact that plants exist on a toxicity spectrum and make plant toxins, which are defended chemicals, we are abandoning a whole bunch of people who could get really well by eliminating the most toxic plants from their diet.”Want to learn more from Dr. Saladino? Kava: Psychedelic Benefits in an Alcohol Alternative – Cameron George with Dave Asprey : 859

This episode of Bulletproof Radio revisits one of my favorite varieties of plant medicine, called kava. It's a plant-based drink from the South Pacific Islands that relieves anxiety, boosts mood and enhances cognitive abilities. It has a pretty impressive resume: Kava is a safe, natural alternative to drugs and alcoholKava offers effects similar to micro dosing psychedelicsWhen humans consume kava, it helps protect the body from all forms of stress (physical, chemical, emotional) I'm talking with Cameron George, a researcher, writer, entrepreneur and the founder of TRU KAVA. He's been on the show before, Kava Just May Be The Next CBD – #731, so don't miss that one for a great starter resource! This time, we get into kava's growing use in the United States, its links to community and social connection, and how it makes an amazing alternative to alcohol.Cameron likes kava as an alcohol replacement, he says because [for the most part] “people who are migrating towards kava are looking for healthier alternatives that are non-addictive, that don't interfere with their faculties and kind of keep them sober, but bring kind of that enhanced sobriety.”Kava lowers the emotional stress system in the brain that is overactive and easily triggered. It increases GABA, an amino acid which is a building block for proteins, and in the brain, kava acts as a neurotransmitter and activates serotonin.“Whenever you talk to the indigenous people of the South Pacific,” Cameron says, “they don't speak of kava in the same context. In the U.S., we just see it as an anxiety relieving herb that helps with sleep and stress and things like that. They speak of it as a spiritual entheogenic medicine that improves the quality of your thoughts, your perspective, induces introspective thinking and allows people to connect with one another.”TRU KAVA sets the industry quality standard by providing the safest and most effective kava on the market. The company offers kava oil and shots, and a new drink that you consume like you would an alcoholic beverage. I'm really excited for you to listen to this conversation, hear us break down some misconceptions and learn how you can experience the benefits of kava. Enjoy! Micah Lowe loves all things ozone. So much so that his nickname is the “Ozonaut.”In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you'll find out how ozone therapy improves your body's intake and use of oxygen and activates your immune system. Micah's company, Simply 03, develops equipment for people to conduct affordable ozone therapy from their own homes.“So, there's a whole world of ozone that you can dive into,” Micah says. “There's ozone for municipalities. There's ozone for wine making. There's ozone for pools. There's ozone for hot tubs. There's ozone for aquariums, and then there's medical ozone. They're all different. You may think ozone is a pollutant, but, in fact, it's a really strong oxidant that alters your body at a cellular level and helps your mitochondria make more antioxidants. Ozone stimulates growth factors and increases oxygen metabolism. This in turn increases energy and stamina and reduces brain fog. “Ozone is actually similar to exercise in that it signals a pathway called the NRF2 pathway, where it's actually good for you,” Micah explains. “So, this can be good in terms of athletic performance because it'll help people to recover faster. It'll help them to diminish the effects of those workouts that are really tough.”The other side of the ozone equation involves oxygen efficiency. Oxygen efficiency is important for being able to maintain higher levels of cognitive performance and for athletic performance, Micah says. “It's just a fundamental aspect of our lives that we all need.”Simply O3 manufactures high-quality ozone generators, ozone kits, ozone skincare, and accessories. Since there are many kinds of ozone therapy, we cut right to the chase about how Simply 03 works, what makes it special and how to balance it with the rest of your body care and plan for your health. There's a cosmetic side to ozone, too. Micah co-founded the ozone cosmetic skin care company, Honest O3, with his brother. The company specializes in manufacturing and selling oxygen-rich cosmetics, such as creams and gels. Stabilize Your Blood Pressure Using Biofeedback – Mackay Rippey with Dave Asprey : 853

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2021 61:23

Let's not sugarcoat it; both low blood pressure and high blood pressure are bad for you. With either, you can experience an inability to focus, dizziness, heart disease, and other health problems. You want to find a way to stabilize your blood pressure in the Goldilocks zone–just right.Controlling blood pressure is especially important when it comes to heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. There used to be a significant gap between men and women in the incidence of heart disease, but that gap has closed over the past few decades and now women die of heart disease as frequently as men.In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I brought on an expert to talk about Zona Plus. Mackay Rippey serves on the Medical Advisory Board of Zona Health. He explains how the biofeedback device helps you train your own body to change your blood pressure, using isometric exercise. In this kind of muscle contraction, the muscle is tensed and working, but not actively shortening or lengthening. The Zona Plus looks like a joystick from a fighter airplane with a little digital screen on top. That screen gives you immediate feedback.Let's jump right into some of the biochemistry that I found with Zona, Mackay says:“I started with the hand grip. So, 30% is the magic Goldilocks percentage for your grip. So, you need to calculate what your grip strength is in the morning. It can vary from day to day and the optimal is 30%. Now, if you think you can calculate 30% just by knowing what you're feeling, you're sadly mistaken. That's why it helps to have a biofeedback device that tells you, "You're at 30%. Oh, and, by the way, you have to hold it for two minutes." So, if you think you can do that for two minutes, you need a feedback device. It just makes your life a lot easier.”We discuss the effects of pre-hypertension and hypertension on your health, how to manage your blood pressure and how to keep your cardiovascular system functioning properly. We also get into nitric oxide, endothelial cells and red blood cells.Eighty percent of Zona Plus users lower their blood pressure back to normal because Zona makes biofeedback so accessible. It leads to greater cognitive function, clears toxins from your body and more. Consider this hand-held device your cardio biohack. We also talk about the additional supplements you can take to pair with the Zona for faster and better results. And for those of you who may think it's too early in your life for Zona Plus, that you'll use it when you're older, Mackay says to remember this: “Now's the time to start ‘exercising,' your endothelial cells so that they continue to function well as you increase your age so you're not only living longer, but you're living well as well.”Mackay sees the impact of blood pressure across many areas of health:He co-founded Beyond Protocols, an education accelerator for Functional Medicine practitioners. He formulates supplements for cardiovascular health that reduce blood pressure. He's operated Mackay Rippey Acupuncture for more than 30 years. He hosts Lyme Ninja Radio, a podcast focused on the challenges and treatment of Lyme disease. And, he's got a passion for nutrigenomic research.Join us for this important conversation on heart disease, healthy hearts, the blood pressure rollercoaster and some key elements to creating a long healthy life.Note for listeners: I previously interviewed Zona's CEO, Mark Young. When Sergey was on Bulletproof Radio episode #715, he and I talked about ways to make longevity affordable for everyone. Now he's back with a new book, “The Science and Technology of Growing Young: An Insider's Guide to the Breakthroughs that Will Dramatically Extend Our Lifespan… and What You Can Do Right Now.”In this new episode of Bulletproof Radio, he explains how medicine and technology advances are rapidly paving the way for the long and healthy future of the human race. He lays out three dimensions to longevity: prevent premature death, life extension and age reversal.“So you just need to keep your body and your mind in a state which is worth expanding its resource,” Sergey says. “And then it comes down to the full horizon of longevity, which is going to be available to us in 25 to 50 years.” He also debunks the most popular myths about longevity: living more means living less, longevity is dangerous and selfish, and life extension is not really possible. Nope, nope and nope. Sergey gathered research and insights from world-leading scientists, doctors, inventors, and health entrepreneurs to address these myths and many others.Learn more about Sergey: He founded Longevity Vision Fund, a $100M fund to accelerate life extension technological breakthroughs and to make longevity affordable and accessible to all. He's also involved with other longevity-inspired ventures, including: Longevity XPRIZE, a global initiative designed to incentivize the development of technological breakthroughs to cure aging and APPG for Longevity which helps to shape national longevity strategy in the UK.Enjoy! He's spent nearly four decades studying ways he can help others access their energy. He's also a gastroenterologist and endoscopic surgeon, with four decades of experience in Western medicine techniques. His search for ways to better help and heal his patients led him to ancient Chinese energy medicine. He began by learning acupuncture, herbology, massage and acupressure in a traditional Chinese medicine hospital. He moved onto martial arts, which taught him a larger scope of his senses and situational awareness. He was asked to complete challenges that taught him what his body was truly capable of, and he's taken all of those practices to help people harness their full energy. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio with one of our most popular guests, we discuss how his studies impact the way he does his current work, and how you can reach your physical, mental and emotional goals. We also get into how practice, patience and consistent work can help you access the energy you hold to be your best self. Here's what Dr. Morguelan has to say:“When I got to work there, finally, I had the opportunity when I was in one of the hospitals to read some books that had pictures in them. And those books had pictures of people treating somebody, but not touching them, not doing anything. And the person was getting well. So I asked the doctors I was working with there, and they said, yeah, that's the source of all of Chinese medicine.”“You had to be able to stand on your hands. One of the things that people do here in the military, which is not very common for doctors, one hand pushups, then four finger pushups, three finger pushups, those things I'm not. My hands are for surgery, not for those things, but they were always intimating, which turned out to be absolutely true is that you sort of have two bodies.”“You need to open your eyes and wake up to the fact that all throughout life you've had this, at least, maybe no one told you directly, but it's in the culture. It's in the cultural middle of you, that your life is supposed to go like this. And then like this, and like this, and like this.”Enjoy! And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.William Walsh, Ph.D., takes the No. 10 spot: Tailor Your Brain's Neurotransmission with Nutrients — William J. Walsh, Ph.D. #567In this revamped episode of Bulletproof Radio, I talk with research scientist Dr. Bill Walsh about how brain cells function, how they're nourished, and what we need to clear out our brain's trash and keep the good stuff around. He's spent over three decades studying how you can use nutrients and foods to improve your brain health. His expertise shows how mental health can be improved with nutritional psychiatry.More than 100 neurotransmitters in the brain act as chemical messengers. Research shows us that with certain nutrients you can directly affect how those neurotransmitters work. For people who struggle with addiction, for people who have a mental illness, for those who want to live longer, improve their memory and so much more, Dr. Walsh walks you through the nutrients that can make a difference.New research over the past decade shows us what protects our mind and body, and how much our environment influences that. Here's more of what Bill discovered:“Neuroscience advances and my interest has always been on the brain and on people with brain disorders, depression, anxiety, autism, schizophrenia--the whole litany of brain science. And my focus has to be on the neurotransmitters themselves. There are about five or six that seem to be especially important in mental disorders. For the first time in the last 10 years, we now are able with nutrients to directly affect neurotransmission of many of the most important neurotransmitters.” “It seems like all the research is still aimed at finding the next billion-dollar drug that can help people. And we now have enough knowledge that from the new research, when you put it all together, we're learning that with nutrients and with diet even, we can make radical improvements in people with depression and anxiety and problems like that. And that we don't necessarily need a drug.” “If you're going to do one test, do a zinc test. Because if you're low in zinc, that means your chance of getting cancer, chance of developing dementia, chance of developing heart disease is much greater. I would guess that probably half of Americans would benefit from more zinc.”Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts.Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? This time, our conversation spans a special four-part mini-series to discuss his new book: “Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death in a World That's Lost its Mind.” In the Part 3 episode we talk about the five things that can transform cultural consciousness, and in this last installment of the series, Part 4, we're talking about the more specific ways those five pathways can transform your body. Music, breathwork, sex and more all have the power to do things like reset your brainstem, stimulate your nervous system, and unclog your fascia.“You're loading that system,” Jamie says. “You're creating a peak experience that you send through your body and brain, and it lights up your body and brain. And there is a narrative. There's impressions. There's stories. There's characters. There's insights There's whatever else would be the interior content that is often profoundly valuable and meaningful and very different than our monophasic waking state, tired, wired and stressed stuck-in-my-ego stories.”Thai massage, music with certain beats, aligning your spine, soft tissue body work—all of these things can help transform your consciousness. They serve as a pathway to the death-rebirth rituals Jamie studied, the ones that send a peak of energy through your nervous system and reboot your whole system. “I think a critical piece of our global collective challenge and crisis is, hey, we all need to heal ourselves and each other. And here is the most simple, most accessible, most powerful method that humans have ever developed. And here's the cheat codes to everybody and let's get on this.”Be sure to stay tuned until the end when Jamie asks me some questions about delta wave frequencies.Jamie studies neuroanthropology, which brings together culture, biology, and psychology. When people don't trust the things they used to trust, they're led to greater stress, less connection and are more likely to reach for extremism and nihilism. “Any belief system where people are doubling and tripling down in the face of contravening evidence, that's happening, and so is nihilism, where people are just giving up knowing anything at all or the fact that anything is actually ever truly knowable,” Jami says. “We see the rise in diseases and despair and all the accompanying rudderlessness. They aim to optimize digestion, leading into better health and greater performance. Just like me, they believe holistic health, with a focus on body and brain, makes us higher functioning humans.Wade is a former three-time Canadian, natural bodybuilding champion. Matt's a kinesiologist who's trained pro athletes and has been developing supplements for more than a decade. Together at BiOptimizers, they've tackled gut, body and brain health with an emphasis on enzymes, prebiotics and probiotics, magnesium, and blood sugar.“We all have an enzyme bank account in our bodies and they do about 25,000 different functions in the body,” Matt says. “Everything from thinking to blinking, enzymes are involved. They're the catalyst that kickstarts chemical biochemical reactions in the body. And when we eat food, we need to break that food down. So our body's going to use our enzymatic bank account to break that food down.”Certain kinds of enzymes help with carbohydrate digestion, protein and fiber breakdown, losing body fat, improving skin conditions, clearing brain fog and speeding up recovery.“Depending on what you're eating,” Matt says, “your brain is going to recognize what enzymes it needs to produce and then start breaking that down in the mouth and then continuing to excrete enzymes inside your stomach.”And when you do your own biofeedback (paying attention to how your body respond to different stimuli) you'll find what works for you, and what enzymes can help make your body work more efficiently.“I got so into enzymes and their usage because I knew that I really couldn't perform at a high level on that diet [vegetarian] if I didn't have really superior digestion. And then that inadvertently trying to solve that problem as an athlete translated over to all sorts of people who I discovered had digestive-related illnesses and we could actually solve those, and that led to a whole cascade of things and eventually a company and all that sort of stuff. So, you scratch your own head, and you start up with a toaster and end up with a rocket ship.”Enjoy! And get more resources at Dave.Asprey/podcasts.Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? You'll get the main points in a shortened version so you can get the good stuff and get on with your summer plans. And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.Dr. Thomas O'Bryan takes the No. 7 spot with: The Autoimmune Fix – Dr. Thomas O'Bryan – #478In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Thomas O'Bryan says seven out of every 10 patients he treats have autoimmune issues. He's a physician internationally renowned for his work with autoimmune diseases and inflammation, and the nutrition and lifestyle choices that can help. With a healthy immune system, your antibodies have the power to get rid of old and damaged cells and make room for new cells to grow and develop. But with any kind of autoimmunity issue, your antibodies end up killing off more cells than you make. Autoimmunity can be triggered for a long time before you feel the impacts. It tends to hit your body at some point, so the sooner you can find a way to prevent it, the better. Dr. O'Bryan talks about the causes, the signs and what you can do about it, to prevent things like leaky gut and encourage things like healthy enzymes. He says it's most often about what you eat, what's going up your nostrils and what's happening inside your gut. More from Dr. Thomas O'Bryan:“This topic of autoimmunity really becomes a primary concern for all of us, but we've never looked at it that way. So once we understand this, that this is prevalent in almost all of us, that it's an autoimmune mechanism, meaning your immune system attacking your own tissue, whether it's your blood vessels, or components in your blood vessels, the fatty membranes of the blood vessels, or it's your brain, or your joints, or whatever it is, when your immune system is attacking your own tissue, that goes on for years. It's called the spectrum of autoimmunity.” “Celiac disease is when your gut's being chewed up from a sensitivity to wheat. The third category is non celiac wheat sensitivity, and that's the big kahuna picture. Non-celiac wheat sensitivity can manifest as brain dysfunction, autoimmune brain disease, skin disease, joint disease. There's no tissue in the body that might notbe affected by a sensitivity to wheat. Look at the immune system to see. Is my immune system telling me I've got a problem with this food? Because body language never lies. If your immune system is activated to protect you against a particular food, stop eating that food.” “If you treat your body like a Lamborghini, it's going to run like a Lamborghini. When Jamie Wheal comes on Bulletproof Radio we always dig into mind-bending topics. This time, our conversation spans a special four-part mini-series to discuss his new book: “Recapture the Rapture: Rethinking God, Sex and Death in a World That's Lost its Mind.” In this Part 2 episode, we talk about how you can biohack sex and the impacts of a post-orgasmic state.Jamie studies neuroanthropology, which brings together culture, biology, and psychology. He's the founder of the international Flow Genome Project, an organization that helps people reach their peak human performance. He's currently focusing on Hedonic Engineering, a combination of neuroscience and optimal psychology. His book looks at the world's collapse of meaning, the embracing of nihilism, and how you can shift your stories to tackle the world by connecting to others and revitalizing yourself. In Part 1, The Neuroscience of Sex – Jamie Wheal, Part 1 with Dave Asprey – #845, you learn about Jamie's research on sex and the power sex has to improve our lives. Now, we get into “taking the kink out of kinky,” and suggest ways you can engage with your partner (or partners) that maximize pleasure. Things like timed breathwork, music with a strong beat, and other techniques load up your nervous system and create a balance in your body, leading to great sex. “We're reclaiming the full spectrum of human physiology and psychology,” he says, “because no man is an island. No woman is either. Our sociology is about us doing all these things together.”Our conversation includes the powerful states women can access during sex. Specifically, an incredible post-orgasmic state that can offer major healing.“Once again, really much more accessible, cheap, free, like this is everybody, all you got to do is just shut your front door and schedule a playdate with a friend with benefits,” Jamie says. “And you can have access to the things that are getting touted in the new cycles, kind of incessantly over the last three years as these miracle cures and breakthroughs of psychedelic therapies.”He says that PornHub as a baseline for sexuality and inspiration isn't a great idea, yet Americans struggle to rethink approaches to sex in broader terms and prioritize sexual well-being and connection. “We've got such deep conflicted, puritanical coding overlaid with hypersexuality and commodification that it can be really difficult,” Jamie says. Touching on a range of topics, we'll also talk about the power of the feminine, the Council of Grandmothers, cults (and how to spot them) and authoritarianism. Be sure to follow the conversation in Part 3 when Jamie and I talk more about death and God. And, of course, a lot more. Enjoy! “We need to reclaim the story of what's happening and where do we all go now together. Because one percent solutions, no matter how you slice that,, one percent are fundamentally sociopathic, right?” Jamie says. “It's the elect, and it could be the elect that's moral and ethical or spiritual, the true believers. It could be the marriage of the best, and the brightest. It could be the ones with financial resources, but however you cut it, the rest of us need a story for us to live into. And that seemed really important [to include in his book].”The results of a sex survey Jamie conducted with couples for the book showed the profound impacts sex can have on holistic well-being. If you talk about sex like you do other activities with long-term benefits (like flossing or going to the gym) you may be able to understand the ways it can and has changed the human brain over time.“Prolonged partnership coupling and extended sexuality – that results in brain change,” Jamie says. “The results in the cascade of neurochemistry, including prolactin, vasopressin, serotonin, oxytocin, dopamine, and anandamide (all the big swingers for peak state experiences) all arise during sex, coitus, and orgasm. So you're like, "Holy moly", that seems like a very strong candidate for persistent and shifted brain state and cognitive change over time.”Be sure to follow the conversation in Part 2 when Jamie and I talk more about the ways you can create the best sex environment with your partner. If you're losing your hair, you're not alone. Hair loss is more common than you might think: 18 percent of men under 29 have moderate to advanced hair loss, and that number jumps to 53 percent for men in their 40s. Hair loss affects at least 50 percent of women by age 50. From your scalp to your stress load to the state of your hormones, your hair reflects what's going on inside of you.“Scalp health is a big problem,” says hair transplant surgeon Dr. Alan J. Bauman, “and we know now that there's a direct link between scalp health and the inflammation (in the body) that's going on. The hair fiber is dead but the follicle is alive, and when there's inflammation going on in and around that area the follicle just doesn't perform as well. So, scalp health is really important.”And say bye-bye to the painful “plugs” you may have heard about before. Dr. Bauman's sophisticated procedures can be undetectably natural with minimal downtime.Dr. Sophia Kogan conducts research and develops nutraceutical solutions for hair thinning and loss. “Women go through a tremendous amount of stress in relationship to their hair, even more so than men because men sort of expect to thin,” Dr. Kogan says. She explains that the experience of hair loss for women often has a specific shame and guilt associated with it, too.Stress effects your hair throughout your entire lifetime, but during prolonged periods of high stress it's even worse. When you're suffering from physical and/or emotional stress, the body pulls its resources to preserve its life internally, not hair growth. Since everyone experiences stress differently, it's generally important to take time in your day for something that brings you into a flow state, Dr. Kogan suggests. Calming your nervous system plays an important role in stress management. If you enjoy this special episode with Dr. Bauman and Dr. Kogan, listen to their full Bulletproof Radio podcasts about how to improve your hair health:Biohacking Baldness: The Hair Episode for Everyone – Dr. Alan Bauman with Dave Asprey – #727Dr. Bauman treats hair loss, thinning and restoration. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Bill Moses joins the show to introduce you to Flying Embers, an innovation lab that makes hard kombucha, hard seltzers and other fermented botanical brews.Bill founded Flying Embers with the idea of transforming the alcohol industry with what he calls “better-for-you” products. He's a seasoned expert in the natural beverage industry who helped build the first certified organic winery in Southern California, Casa Barranca. He's now blended his experience in organic winemaking with the ancient fermentation practices to create modern drinks rooted in ancient botanical traditions.“I know that I want to have a little bit of fun,” Bill says. “I want to have a drink. I want to relax, whatever it might be. And we know that the alcohol could cause some inflammation. Well, is there an offset? Is there something that may offset some of it? That's the way I rationalize this as better-for-you alcohol.”He also wants to change the existing alcohol paradigm. No small goal there.I don't talk about alcohol much on the show, but there's all sorts of good live bacteria in Flying Embers products made from natural, organic, plant-based sources. You'll find innovative ingredients, some pretty bold flavors and functional benefits you wouldn't expect to find in alcohol.Flying Embers also diligently manages what goes in and the fermentation process. They have a staff microbiologist who lab tests all products to ensure quality. Our conversation dives into the science behind drink development.“We really want to know what's in there,” Bill says. “We really want to test it. We really want to continue to maintain the integrity of the bacteria and the yeast that is fully clean and tested for mycotoxins and all sorts of impurities.”Flying Embers drinks contain no residual sugar, reminding us that sugar is not our friend. Instead, turmeric, ginseng and astragalus gets added the fermentation process, which act as adaptogens. These herbs turn our stress responses on and off more effectively.Hard kombucha is becoming a mainstream item you can find in bars, restaurants, and retailers across the country, so this is an exciting time to be hearing about a brand that has in mind what's best for our bodies. This is kombucha that I can get behind.Flying Embers also has an interesting backstory. The company Launched in the midst of the 2017 Thomas Fires in Ojai, California. Literally among flying embers. The conversation covers the experiences women often have after giving birth, such as hypothyroidism, brain fog, and larger mental health issues due to major hormonal changes. She takes a strong stance on the birth control pill. She shares the ways it causes leaky gut, disrupts thyroid hormones, increases risk of depression, and more. By being off the pill, she says, you can be more aligned with your body. She advocates for fertility awareness, a process in which (with the help of technology) you can track your cycle and the way your hormones manifest themselves in your life, month-to-month. Dr. Brighten first works on healing the body, then the mind, and then on a bigger level, like healing family lineage. In an interesting aside, we also veer in discussion about traumatic brain injuries (we've both had one!) and our immediate and long-term approaches for healing. Our discussion is highly informed and even more encouraging. I think you'll find it really helpful! Here's what Dr. Brighten has to say:On The Pill: “Unfortunately, what we're seeing of the 100 million women worldwide, who have taken the pill, about 60 percent of them are only taking it for symptoms, which is a huge red flag to me. If only 40 percent are taking the pill to prevent pregnancy, then what's up with this other 60 percent? And why are we not practicing root-cause resolution, which we could absolutely do, and just giving women a pill?”On Birth: “For some reason, somewhere along the line, we got it in our head that women should be able to pop out a baby and then just go along their merry way. And at six weeks, everything's recovered and fine. Reality is, is it takes a whole year to really rebuild the nutrients and recover your body.”On Orgasm: “It's a big thing that gets dismissed in women's medicine. Having an orgasm is this mythical unicorn and women aren't that interested in sex. But when you look at the research, there are so many benefits.”Enjoy! Wiley has been conducting research on aging, cancer, sleep, hormones and more for decades. She's a researcher, a medical theorist, and an author of the books “Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival” and “Sex, Lies, and Menopause: The Shocking Truth About Synthetic Hormones and the Benefits of Natural Alternatives.” In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, the conversation covers why it's important to manage your hormones.Hormones keep your body in homeostasis, and when they're out of whack, well, so are you. She's the creator of the Wiley Protocol, which uses natural topical hormones to restore sleep, memory, libido, a quiet immune system and pain-free days and nights for both men and women. Her study of hormones is connected to genomics, epigenetics, your surrounding environment, the larger environment and bacteria. She explains why she developed the protocol and the impacts hormones have on our whole health, such as in cancer treatment, restoring brain function, and more. This episode will help you understand more about the ways you can control your external environment in order to improve our body's internal processes. Here's what T.S. Wiley has to say:“Everything in my head is connected, and you can't explain one discipline separately. You can't talk about hormones if you can't talk about the genes they're turning on and off. You can't talk about genomics unless you talk about epigenetics, which is the environment turning things on and off, and now, it's very obvious to me in the new work I've done that it's all about the bacteria who own the planet. You have to realize they've been here for three billion years. They made us, and the plants, and the fish, and the birds because they wanted to walk.”“What the hell happened to my libido? I have a raging libido, and it was just gone one day. I thought, “I need hormones. I got to figure this out.” I read everything I could and nothing made sense, and I basically went to the notion that if you were going to put back something that you've lost, like insulin in a Type 1 diabetic, you would want to put it back the way you had it. Type 1 diabetics, of course, take insulin depending on their blood sugar after they eat, whatever they eat. They measure it all the time because that's the best they can do to replicate how the body would respond.”“There's two immune systems. There's the one in your gut that is defense, that keeps their cousins out. That keeps you from a getting a cold. Then, there's the one that belongs to the planet, also, unfortunately in your gut and in every plant and everything, and that's autoimmunity. That's what takes you out.” Enjoy! This is Part 2 of Alon Braun's Bulletproof Radio episode. We talk about entrepreneurship, how to make your vision a reality and how to be a great leader. Alon is the author of “The Entrepreneur's Journey: 8 Steps from Inspiration to Global Impact,” and a mentor, teacher and leader for entrepreneurs. In his book, he separates the world into four dimensions: internal world, external world, individual and collective. He says in order to fully craft your vision (whatever that may be) and be the best person to represent that, you need to do work in all four spaces. To be receptive to inspiration, you need to work on your internal world. Opening yourself to the art of expressing and all forms of collaboration, represents the external world. To work within the individual realm, you need to align yourself to the identity of entrepreneur. Finally, work to make sure everyone on your team is collaborating as a collective. Learning about all of these worlds is essential to entrepreneurship, Alon says. “We need to balance, it's all an act of balance between all these forces, and this is why I built the framework. The framework guides you step-by-step.”Alon also explains how to market your products, build trust, center mindfulness in your work, and most importantly, how you can't do this process alone. “Just walk with somebody that's been there already,” Alon says. “Don't be so arrogant to think that you're inventing the wheel. Get an advisor that's been through the journey before you. It's okay,” says Alon. “That's the way you get experience." … “You need the best. You need to find who are the best teachers, you need to find the best courses, and that's the work for every CEO.”If you want to learn more about how you can be a productive, engaging, successful and creative leader of any kind, you'll get a lot out of this episode Be sure to listen to Part 1 of Alon's conversation about how to hack your memory: Build a Memory Palace to Upgrade Your Productivity – Alon Braun with Dave Asprey, Part 1 – #841Enjoy! In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, guest Alon Braun scales enterprises and scientific innovations, especially in the deep tech industry. He founded Neurotech Analytics, a neurotech-focused analytical hub that produces advanced analytical reports on the whole scope of neurotech industries. That said, my first question to him could be, “what can't you do?” He's been a marine biologist, a member of Israel's cyber special forces unit, a children's book author, a body movement teacher and more.Using his background in technology, Alon's developed a kind of virtual machine we can use to boost our brain power. In this first of a two-part episode, I talk with him about how to create a new relationship with your memory by building a memory palace. When you do this, it boosts your efficiency, creativity and decision-making ability. Before Alon started using a memory palace, he was barely able to remember six numbers in a row. After he started using memory palaces, he was able to remember 100 numbers forward and backwards. But it's not just a technique you use to show off your memory.“You put all the wants [into your memory palace],” Alon explains. “I took all this project management system, and I uploaded it to the memory palace. I needed to make an object for every project. Make an object that reminds me of this want, and I took the list of objects [and put it into my memory palace].”This technique allows him to work and cross things off his to-do lists without checking his phone or computer. It can allow you to connect with a project while still going about your day. On a mathematical level, building a memory palace is about creating an algorithm for your brain to prioritize your values. On a general level, it's about creating a sorting process for everything going on inside your brain.“Right now we have so many choices,” Alon says. “You open Netflix… you open the internet, what do you choose?" He says that building a memory palace is a skill we can develop for multi-criteria decisions and choice according to your own preference and values that aren't recommendations by a technology algorithm.“We need to do the ground work and work with our children,” he says. This is an exciting episode that gives you great tools to hack your memory, Make sure and tune in for part two, where we'll dig into entrepreneurship, mission and how to build your vision.
