Beloved dessert authority, recipe developer, and YouTube star Claire Saffitz is back on She's My Cherry Pie! In this episode, Claire joins host Jessie Sheehan to tackle a baked good that has long delighted eaters and intimidated home cooks: chocolate soufflé. Claire says there's a lot of fear-mongering around the dessert, but when you break it down into straightforward steps and reduce the batch size, it's an attainable bake for anyone. Tune in for Claire's tips for super stable soufflés and her explanation of why coating the inside of your ramekins with sugar ensures your dessert will rise (and stay) high. The duo also chat about Claire's approach to writing recipes, what being a YouTuber means to her today, her New York Times-bestselling cookbook “What's For Dessert,” and more. Want to bake along? We talk about a bunch of books and biblioadventures in Episode 180. What's new, right? #wink Some highlights include books we just read, which took us from a memoir about caring for animals (THE OTHER FAMILY DOCTOR by Karen Fine) to an idiomatic fowl in search of freedom (CHASE OF THE WILD GOOSE by Mary Gordon) and from an island in the Atlantic (SUMMER STAGE by Meg Mitchell Moore) to a road trip around America (TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY by John Steinbeck). Speaking of travel, we had a two-day joint jaunt to Manhattan, where we went our separate ways during daylight hours – Emily volunteered at the CHERRY BOMBE JUBILEE and Chris worked at the STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION LIBRARY. Closer to home, Emily went to see THE QUIET GIRL at the Madison Cinemas and Chris did some archival research at The Beinecke. Some fun biblioadventures are coming up–like Emily moderating two author events at the Newburyport Literary Festival this weekend: Fur, Feathers, and Scales: A Lifetime of Caring for Pets with author Karen Fine and Shaped by Loss: How Tragedy Changed the Lives of Emerson, Thoreau, and William James with author Megan Marshall. Chris is planning to attend a virtual event with author Benjamin Taylor who will be discussing Cather's MY ANTONIA on Thursday at 7pm CT via the National Willa Cather Center. Reminder: the show notes for each episode lists all of the books and events we mention. Happy Listening, and then, Happy Reading!

Today's show is ALL. ABOUT. CALIFORNIA. We're joined in studio by Mike Edison, host of Arts & Seizures, and Patrick Martins, HRN Founder and Heritage Foods USA Founder for a round up of recent food news including Caity's recap of the Good Food Mercantile that took place in Washington DC last weekend. Kat brings us some exclusive interviews from Monterey County, CA. First up, we hear from Tom Wright, Reporter from The Monterey Herald, about the insanely rainy winter season in Big Sur. Mudslides in the area caused a total shutdown of Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) after the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge was condemned. Tom shares stories of the immediate aftermath of the storm (such as airlifting of food and supplies) and the lasting effects on the community. Many restaurants and resorts in Big Sur are still closed and don't plan to reopen until the bridge can be repaired or other travel alternatives are available to guests. Moving slightly north, we hear from Sheila Bowman, Manager of Culinary and Strategic Initiatives for Seafood Watch at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Now in its seventeenth year, Seafood Watch is the leading source of science-based seafood recommendations in the U.S. After a quick break, we share the latest news out of Ron Finley HQ in Los Angeles, what our engineer Vitor has planned for this weekend (hint: it involves chamber music and tickets are available HERE), and a preview of Cherry Bombe Jubilee & Marketplace happening August 8th and 9th. Catch HRN's table at the marketplace for your chance to win our "Sophisticated Home Cook" Raffle Basket! To wrap things up, we play a round of "Girly Pop Culture Trivia" with Patrick and Mike in the hot seats. More about our guests: Tom Wright, a Northern California native, covers breaking news in Monterey County. He's been a journalist with the Monterey Herald for nearly five years, covering local government and sports in addition to working as a copy editor. Before joining The Herald, he wrote for the Daily Democrat in Woodland, California, and graduated from San Jose State University. Sheila Bowman works with chefs, educators, media and industry with a goal of shifting them towards seafood products that are caught or farmed with the environment in mind. Trained as a marine scientist and passionate about conservation, her work takes her around the country and into kitchens where sustainability really begins. EPISODE 300!! To celebrate this milestone we're joined by our dear friends Kerry Diamond and Claudia Wu of Cherry Bombe Magazine. It's their annual visit with us, and they're here to tell us all about the expanded Cherry Bombe Jubilee. We're then visited by Shane Conerty, aka Color Collage, a project that was initially based on sampling mp3's of brand new indie music that Conerty found on blogs and making unique, original remixes of them. The current focus of the project is taking the indie pop songwriting aspects of Conerty's former band, Now You See Them, and applying them to the mid-fi, dusty electronic sound of Color Collage. We want to say thanks to everyone who's been on, supported and tuned into Snacky Tunes over the last eight years. We couldn't have made it to #300 without you!!!

You don’t have to be the chef to be making a contribution and an impact on this industry.” [14:17] —Kerry Diamond on Snacky Tunes “We just started doing chocolate and vanilla vegan ice cream and I was pretty excited when I came across a vegan so I dragged him [Greg] into the store and got him to try it and we got to talking about music and made a very loose plan to jam.” [41:19] —Laura O’Neill on Snacky Tunes
