Wallach, who tells it like it is—but in a nice way only someone who grew up in the Midwest can. From questioning the "doctor" honorific to calling large health systems "the root of evil," D.A. challenges healthcare's sacred cows and offers a provocative vision for the future. We cover:
My name is Benjamin D. James IV. I was born in Washington D.C. My father, Benjamin D. James III, was sick with ALS and passed away when I was 2 years old. Moved to Atlanta, Ga shortly after. It was high school, where I learned my passion for music. I Joined the high school marching band, where I played the drums, and even taught myself the keyboard being around all those musicians. After graduating H.S. I enlisted in the United States Air Force. My job was maintain and fix F 15's. Shortly after the Air Force, I enrolled at Savannah State University. It was there I found my love for poetry and spoken word. I joined the poetry organization, “word or waiver of discovery”. I was elected president and I began hosting/promoting open mics on campus. Later on I cofounded the group A.M.I. (Affiliated Money Inc) We quickly became a local hit in the Savannah Community. In the future we would open up for entertainment acts such as Chester French gym class heroes Pastor Troy, Lyft Jennings, and Hurricane Chris, just to name a few. After the group disbanded I became the part owner of a recording studio. Currently I am in Atlanta finishing a my first poetry book. I just released my first solo project Rhythm And Poetry. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wizdomthehealer/support

My guest today is D.A. Wallach, one of the more interesting investors I’ve come across. He is the former lead singer of the group Chester French and the former artist-in-residence at Spotify, where he was also an early investor. While he’s also an early investor in companies like SpaceX, his focus the last 5 years has been on early stage health care investing, which is the topic of this conversation. We discuss the entire life sciences and heath care investing ecosystem. This was recorded in the very early days of the Coronavirus outbreak so while we touch on it briefly it isn’t the primary focus, and I intend on returning to more traditional episodes like this one in the coming weeks, meant to be evergreen conversations. Please enjoy my conversation with D.A. Wallach. For more episodes go to InvestorFieldGuide.com/podcast. Imagine that you're fresh out of college, touring with your rock band, and you meet Puff Daddy at backstage at your show. Sounds surreal, right? Well that what is what happened to D.A. Wallach. After graduating from Harvard, he toured the country with his rock band Chester French. And the likes of Puff Daddy showed up at his shows. Years later, D.A. has become a bio tech investor. He's pivoted his career many times. Chester French was a rock band like the Beatles, with a sensbility and style of Outkast. If you like Ryan Williams' podcast, please leave an honest review on iTunes! https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/influencer-economy-ryan-williams/id820744212?mt=2 As a freshman at Harvard in 2003, D.A. joined the band Chester French as its lead singer. Their curiousity lead them to book tours and meet fans though social media. He realized that in many ways, his fans were like him. And social media helped him to literally meet tens of thousands of friends. While growing up in Wisconsin, D.A. recalls downloading every David Bowie album through Napster. Years later, as a musican, he watched the music industry get eviscerated. As his days of rock touring were slowing down, a small company named Spotify was preparing for its U.S. launch. That's when D.A. made his first pivot. D.A. is now investing in biotech companies, as he's fascinated by humans relation to biology and is interested in driving an enhanced understanding of the connection. New powers and insights can be gained as the future of biology and technology gets defined. He is now looking for businesses that are taking cool scientific ideas from academia or the lab. He wants to turn concepts and technologies into businesses for entrepreneurs. D.A. Wallach on Twitter: https://twitter.com/dawallach D.A. Wallach website: http://www.dawallach.com/
As double-bills go on a show such as this, it’s hard to imagine a more relevant combo than the director and composer of La La Land - the film that’s causing quite the song and dance the world over. In our previous episode we had the pleasure of talking to director Damien Chazelle about his musical masterpiece; this time round, it’s all about his composer and great friend, Justin Hurwitz. If you’re new to the show, the format is simple. Each week, Edith speaks to key figures from the world of cinema about the music in their work, with relevant examples of the cues we discuss woven into the discussion. So it is you'll be hearing extracts from Justin’s compositions for Guy And Madeline On A Park Bench, Whiplash and La La Land, all of which he scored for Damien. The pair met in their Freshman year at Harvard, forming a band called Chester French who went on to have considerable success after they went their own way to make movies. But Chester French’s loss has been our gain, with Whiplash and La La Land in particular earning near-universal acclaim – not to mention awards and nominations aplenty …
