Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHWe meet a little girl named Jyn. Her family is in hiding. One day, the bad guy Orson shows up to tell Jyn's dad, Galen, that they need him to come back and finish the Death Star. Galen's like, “I wouldn't be any use—I'm just a sad sack ever since my wife died.” Suddenly, his wife comes running out of the field—so really bad timing, honestly. She has a gun and she's like, “You'll never take him!” Orson's like, “I'm taking you all.” She shoots him. They shoot her. Orson tells his guys to go find the child, but Jyn is really good at hide-and-seek. She waits in the secret spot until a dude named Saw shows up. It's clear they know each other.Fast forward some time—Jyn is now an adult and in a holding cell. Meanwhile, a cargo pilot named Bodhi shows up and claims to Saw that he wants to join the Rebels.Jyn is being transferred with other prisoners when Rebel forces suddenly break in and free them, led by Cassian Andor. Together, they fight stormtroopers and escape. They take a reprogrammed Imperial droid named K-2SO and head somewhere else, where they encounter more stormtroopers who are gathering crystals to power the Death Star. They're about to get captured, but a blind spiritual warrior named Chirrut Îmwe and his mercenary friend Baze Malbus help them out. This allows Jyn to make contact with Saw, who is holding Bodhi. She sees a message in which Galen reveals that he secretly built a vulnerability into the Death Star. The schematics are stored in an Imperial data vault.Onboard the Death Star, Orson orders a test strike on the moon where the gang is. Jyn and her group take Bodhi and flee, but Saw stays behind and dies.Orson gets an atta boy from his higher-up.Bodhi leads the group to Galen's Imperial research facility. Rebel bombers attack the site. Galen is wounded and dies in Jyn's arms before she escapes with the group on a stolen Imperial cargo shuttle.Orson is summoned by Darth Vader—he's back, baby!—to explain the attack. Orson's like, “Now that you've seen my work, maybe introduce me to the Emperor?” Vader force-chokes him and says, “Get back to work and don't cause any more trouble.”Jyn proposes a mission to steal the Death Star schematics, but the Alliance Council thinks there's no chance of success. Frustrated by their inaction, Jyn's group leads a small squad of volunteers—Bodhi dubs them “Rogue One.” Jyn, Cassian, and K-2SO infiltrate the Imperial base while the others create a diversion with a space battle. The Alliance eventually joins the fight, sending their fleet. Jyn gets the schematics but is ambushed by Orson, who is shot and wounded by Cassian. Jyn transmits the schematics to the Rebel command ship just before the Death Star fires a beam that destroys the base—and them. The Rebel fleet tries to escape, but many ships are intercepted by Darth Vader. He boards the command ship and wrecks everyone in an attempt to recover the plans, but a smaller ship escapes with them. Princess Leia declares that the schematics will provide hope for the Rebellion—some might even call it a new hope.

On the thirty-eighth episode of Blockbuster Rewatch, Andy Atherton is joined by Steve Riddle to do a live watch of 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The guys talk about filling in the blanks between Revenge of the Sith & A New Hope; actors who appeared in both the MCU and Star Wars; planet hopping; defectors from The Empire; CG Govenor Tarkin; Felicity Jones' filmography; Kaiburr Crystals; Krennic's ruthlessness; returning to Mustafar; the duo of Chirrut & Baze; bandwidth issues on distant planets; K2's heroism and dying for the rebellion.
Rogue One's second half starts with a crash and gets wilder from there. From 56:17 on, we string together heroic space battles, Vietnam war techniques, and Star Wars' classically atrocious file-sharing practices. We do, indeed, both cry about X-wings. But now, the real question. Does this Growing Up Skywalker experiment work? Is the strict internal chronology the way to watch Star Wars? This week, we watched until 56:17, when Cassian's crew lands on Eadu, and talk through the thematic ties between Andor and Rogue One, the film's critical reception, and deep dives into our main characters: Cassian, Jyn, and the one and only Saw Gerrera. Plus, we talk about what's a treat for a veteran fan versus what might get a new fan lost in translation. I've never met a person who wanted to not live free. The trick with human beings is that we're all seeking freedom from different things, people, places, and ideas. One man's prison is another's retreat. In last week's edition, What Sets You Free (paywall is now down) I outlined how the Jedi and Sith differ on what defines freedom, and how it relates to our own struggles with living the kind of lives we'd like to live. Today I have something else for you to consider, a controversial point — no doubt. Which is that freedom and subjugation may depend only on your perspective. After all, when we're talking about Star Wars' philosophy, even a blind man can see more clearly than those with functioning eyes. But first! and took How The Force Can Fix The World and the message of This Is The Way on the road to North Carolina Comicon in Durham. Many of you reading this today are folks we met on the convention floor, again — welcome! Stephen gave a talk to a live audience about Star Wars' & Empathy titled “The Call of Heroes". That call is to look beyond the masks and illusions of people who frighten and confuse us. That talk will be posted on YouTube soon. In the meantime, this 4-minute video is a sneak peek into our journey and what it was like preparing for for NC Comicon and spreading our message about how Star Wars makes us better. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we meet Chirrut Îmwe, a Force-wielding mystic and adherent to the Jedi way. He is no Jedi, but this blind monk of the planet Jedha would have made a great one, if not for the Empire's rise. Chirrut finds himself captured by anti-Imperial militants along with Cassian Andor and Baze Malbus. They sit together in a shoddy prison cell. Cassian Andor is nervously trying to find a way out. Chirrut says, “Relax, Captain. We've been in worse cages than this one.”Andor snips back, “This is the first for me.”Chirrut Îmwe, the blind monk sitting relaxed behind prison bars and undisturbed by their situation, says….“There is more than one sort of prison, Captain. I sense that you carry yours wherever you go.”Chirrut senses a dark shadow around Cassian. One of guilt, worry, shame, doubt, and anger. All of these things shape Cassian's actions and bear down on him like a wet blanket. Cassian could escape this prison cell and still be a prisoner, of sorts. Chirrut on the other hand, is free as a bird in any situation. This Is The Way is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Just as Chirrut can see clearly through the Force, even without his eyes, Chirrut is not held hostage by his past mistakes or worries. All is, from his perspective, as the Force wills it. It's a perfect encapsulation of the philosophy of Epictetus (meaning: the acquired one), one of the Stoic greats of 55–135 AD. Whereas many Stoics of the age were wealthy and well-connected, Epictetus was a fellow traveler who was enslaved. He had no freedom in the literal or legal sense, but in his teachings throughout life, he would speak of how he was more free than any man who had ever owned him. A lofty ideal, but worthy of consideration. Chirrut Îmwe, without a doubt, would have identified with this lens on life. Epictetus, whose lectures are captured in the Enchiridion, remarked on how the rich and powerful of Rome would weep over money, status, and possessions. Epictetus had none. His perspective was to guard the freedom he had in his mind. To be uninfluenced by status, uncompromised by concerns over money or belongings — this was liberty. I wanted to keep this message today short, so if you want to go deeper, check out last week's post on defining freedom. In the modern age, we're fortunate to now be raised with an understanding of how unjust (and evil) systems like slavery are. But we should be wary of thinking of chains only in the literal sense. After all, some of us carry our prison with us wherever we go. Make choices this week that lead you toward more freedom to choose. This is the way. A comparison of the Jedi & Sith view of freedom, and how it relates to our very real lives. Will you consider joining us as a Paid Supporter of This Is The Way? On May the 4th, also known as Star Wars Day, people around the world celebrate the epic space opera franchise. The article revolves around the quote “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me” from the movie Rogue One, spoken by Chirrut Imwe. Chirrut is a blind warrior-monk who has deep spiritual beliefs and worships the Force. Chanting this mantra helped him overcome his blindness and focus more intently on a task. The article explains how chanting and mantras work to calm and center the mind, regardless of the religion.Research shows that chanting specific mantras can lead to stress reduction, mood elevation, and increased cardiovascular tone stability. Additionally, different mantras can help alleviate anxiety, depression, and nervousness in social situations. For example, “This will pass,” “I am kind to myself,” and “I have value” are mantras that can help alleviate anxiety, depression, and nervousness in social situations. The author concludes that you don't have to practice a religion to practice chanting, and everyone can benefit from this simple technique. As always links to further your own research and discover your own mantrahttps://medium.com/spiritual-tree/chanting-a-pathway-to-spiritual-awakening-e2557c785c43https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-40200-whttp://themusicsalon.blogspot.com/2012/05/four-kinds-of-chant.htmlhttps://www.pray.com/articles/short-prayers-to-connect-with-god#:~:text=%E2%80%9COur%20Father%2C%20who%20art%20in,Amen.%E2%80%9Dhttps://www.healthline.com/health/mind-body/mantras-for-anxiety#for-groundingTo find out more about investing in multifamily real estate schedule a call at https://www.oncallinvestments.com/Are you a healthcare provider exploring options outside of your traditional career path? Surely this was intentional…but I can't figure out the story here, appreciate your thoughts.” Mike in Wokingham, UK: “We all agree that ANDOR has been incredible - but what could they do that would ruin it all in the last episode? Maybe Cassian is about to die and is rescued by Baby Yoda. Or it turns out that B2EMO was an Imperial spy all along. Or (of course) Dedra is Cassian's long lost sister and they run off together. This week we discuss ancient history in a place not remotely near any of us. It is a time of dishevel as the Trade Federation takes negotiations to drastic levels. Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi attempt to open new lines of communication, only to be hurled into a multi-planet adventure where they will discover The Space Messiah and face off against... STAR WARS: EPISODE 1- The Phantom Menace! Ten years have passed and still no Jedi has come to understand the concept of balance. Obi-Wan finds himself on a mission in a missing solar system. Anakin Skywalker finds himself getting funky with a senator in the Naboo lake area. Soon the long brewing war will boil over into full intergalactic slaughter. STAR WARS: EPISODE 2- Attack of the Clones. Three more years have come and gone. Anakin feels that not enough of his fellow Jedi kiss his butt enough, so he joins the Dark Side with little to no prompting. Obi-Wan has a side story against a robot general to take him out of the main action. Some folks love it, others do not. Still you can't argue that it's the last in the Prequel Trilogy... STAR WARS: EPISODE 3- Revenge of the Sith. Fifteen years ago Galen Erso was ripped from his hiding place to help the Empire build their ultimate weapon and his daughter, Jyn, was taken under the wing of super rebel Saw Gerrera. Since then Jyn has grown into a full tilt bad ass action hero. When Galen gets a message out about a weakness he has hidden in the ultimate weapon, Jyn gathers a team to get the plans and make sure that it is never used on the repressed planets. She gathers a team including BFFs Baze Malbus and Chirrut Îmwe. Unfortunately, the Resistance saddles her with an incompetent babysitter named Cassian Andor. Andor is just there interrupt all character moments and incompetently stumbles in the way of every other while making sure no one ever stops thinking about better similar characters that appeared in the other movies. Andor is the fucking worst and ensures that they can't possibly succeed in Rogue One: A STAR WARS STORY. All that and Tyler feels something akin to joy, Dave's suffering manifests as actual tooth pain, and Kevin stops to smell a lot of roses as a desperate measure of holding on to his sanity.Join us, won't you?Episode 259- PADME!

Episode 97 of the podcast takes on the intergalactic conflicts and rebel alliances of Rogue One (Gareth Edwards, 2016), an anthology feature film and prequel to Star Wars (George Lucas, 1977) that tells the origin story of the ‘Rogue One' starfighter squadron and the creation of the Death Star. Special guest for this episode is Dr Jonathan Wroot, who is Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Film Studies at the University of Greenwich. Jonathan has published research on home media formats and Asian cinema distribution, including the co-edited collection entitled New Blood: Framing 21st Century Horror (2021) and his recent monograph on the Zatoichi film and TV franchise. He has also contributed to the podcast series Beyond Japan and Second Features, as well as the 2022 Japan Touring Film Programme. Listen as Chris, Alex, and Jonathan discuss Jedis, the Jidaigeki (時代劇) period film, and longstanding East Asian influences upon the Star Wars saga; the relationship between Zatoichi the blind swordsman and Rogue One's own blind warrior Chirrut Îmwe; hope, alliance, and the religious structures of Gareth Edwards' spin-off story; the generic implications of ‘the Force' upon science-fiction/fantasy distinctions via questions of rationality; digital de-aging technologies and the virtual recreation of youth; and the challenges of Rogue One to expand the Star Wars brand by taking spectators back into the fictional world of Hollywood's most famous space fantasy. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **This episode was produced and edited by Leon Waldo**

It's the end of Black History Month, but as Saw Gerrera reminds us, "we have a long ride ahead of us." This week we focus on Chirrut and his quote to Capt. Andor that, "There is more than one kind of prison, Captain” and explore the ways society financially, and literally, imprisons people. We also found a probe droid our parlimentarian let us keep. As the shadows of the Empire loom ever larger across the galaxy, so do deeply troubling rumors. The Rebellion has learned of a sinister Imperial plot to bring entire worlds to their knees. Deep in Empire-dominated space, a machine of unimaginable destructive power is nearing completion. A weapon too terrifying to contemplate...and a threat that may be too great to overcome. If the worlds at the Empire's mercy stand any chance, it lies with an unlikely band of allies: Jyn Erso, a resourceful young woman seeking vengeance; Cassian Andor, a war-weary rebel commander; Bodhi Rook, a defector from the Empire's military; Chirrut Îmwe, a blind holy man; his crack-shot companion, Baze Malbus; and K-2SO, a deadly Imperial droid turned against its former masters. In their hands rests the new hope that could turn the tide toward a crucial Rebellion victory - if only they can capture the plans to the Empire's new weapon. But even as they race toward their dangerous goal, the specter of their ultimate enemy - a monstrous world unto itself - darkens the skies. Waiting to herald the Empire's brutal reign with a burst of annihilation worthy of its dreaded name: Death Star.
