Jon reignites his old school SuccessConnect podcast troublemaker series with SuccessFactors community leader and partner Chris Paine. Chris wrote a post prior to SuccessConnect about his predictions and expectations - did the show deliver? What did he learn as of the end of day one? The guys also get into the AI topic, reviewing how SAP can succeed in AI, what customers think, and how AI might impact implementation services in good and bad ways. *** Audio note: the main recording ran into an issue, so this final is a splice between two recordings. I've leveled over the volume but you may notice the splice - the result isn't perfect but I hope it's pretty listenable.*** Chris' pre-event blog post: https://www.wombling.com/hr/successconnect-2023-expectations/ Chris' post-event blog post: https://www.wombling.com/hr/successconnect-2023-expectations-met-and-exceeded/ Jon's 1st show post on gen AI and more: https://diginomica.com/successconnect-23-under-hood-saps-generative-ai-news-and-beyond

The Super Bowl offers a dream opportunity for advertisers, with millions of people in the stands and glued to television screens for the year's most-watched football game. But the ads are only one side to the game's spectacle. The halftime shows offer an unrivalled if fleeting global audience to performers for the one American football game that even non-sports fans watch. In more recent years, the Super Bowl has also become a kind of defacto commentary on race in America - with issues like who performs in the half time show and indeed who most benefits from the sport becoming a national talking point.Today, North American correspondent Farrah Tomazin on the cultural event that is the American Super Bowl. And later - chief sports writer for the Sydney Morning Herald, Andrew Webster speaks to Chris Paine about the game.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some of Australia's most high-profile athletes are taking a stand against cashed-up sponsors, leading to a new wave of political action in sport. In netball, the Diamonds rallied around the rookie shooter Donnell Wallam when she raised concerns over Netball Australia's new $15 million deal with Hancock Prospecting, owned by Gina Rinehart. Meanwhile Australia's men's cricket captain, Pat Cummins, confronted Cricket Australia bosses to object to a $40 million deal with the energy company Alinta. And now, members and supporters of the Fremantle Dockers are calling on the AFL club to cut ties with the oil and gas giant Woodside. Today on Please Explain, sports reporter Georgina Robinson joins Chris Paine to discuss this new wave of activism and what it could mean for the future of sport in Australia. We will blame Brandon Toombs for this one - he wrote a great blog about his experiences with SAP SuccessFactors Core-Hybrid implementation challenges. Steve Bogner, Chris Paine and Luke Marson engaged with it on Twitter and decided we had enough content for a decent (we hope) podcast. So here we are - our experiences (good and bad) with Core-Hybrid implementations, and a bit more. Enjoy! Or not. This is also our first attempt at posting the video of the podcast - available on Spotify and on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMXmLCRp3RY . Audio for now everywhere else. What happened to Melissa Caddick? That's the question central to an inquest into the disappearance and likely death of the notorious Sydney fraudster. The unravelling mystery of Caddick's elaborate Ponzi scheme where she ripped off more than $20 million from friends, family, even her own parents. It's gripped Australia for nearly two years since she disappeared from her Dover Heights home in Sydney's glamorous east. Today marks the end of the first week of the Caddick inquest where we've heard a lot about the days immediately following her disappearance, particularly the interactions between police and her hairdresser husband Anthony Koletti. With James Massola: It's been a whirlwind start to life as the Prime Minister for Anthony Albanese. He's rubbed shoulders with Joe Biden in Tokyo, ridden bikes in Indonesia and inherited the cost of living crisis he and Labor campaigned so hard on. Some might call his first 100 days a honeymoon; after all, exclusive polling for the Herald and the Age delivered a huge nine-point bump to Labor in the primary vote since polling day. And Albanese himself enjoys a 55% approval rating as preferred PM. But it's not all been high-fives, Rabbitohs scarves and skolling beers at Gang of Youths concerts; Albanese has a to-do list you'd need to take a deep breath for. Today on Please Explain, national affairs editor James Massola joins Chris Paine to discuss the cheers, beers and a budget in arrears as Anthony Albanese marks 100 days in office.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Special Investigation: In the heat and dirt of northern Ghana, a Chinese company stands accused of stealing millions in gold from a neighbouring Australian mine in a brazen heist and firing a "warning shot" that left dozens of locals dead. For centuries, miners have come from around the world to make their fortune by tapping into the rich veins of gold that run through this ancient terrain. It's an area of extremes: scorching heat, unbearable humidity and poverty for local Ghanaians… all in stark contrast to the vast riches that lie beneath. Now, a year-long investigation by the Herald and the Age has uncovered a bitter and deadly dispute over claims of trespass, theft and death. North Asia Correspondent Eryk Bagshaw joins Chris Paine to unpack this extraordinary tale.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cost of living… three words that are dominating discussions in lounge rooms, boardrooms and the halls of Parliament. This week you could be forgiven for thinking the biggest issue facing Anthony Albanese's government was untangling the secret ministries mess left by his predecessor, Scott Morrison. But this week we also had new figures on wages and unemployment bringing back into sharp focus the key challenges for not just Albanese, but ordinary Australians. My guest today is Chris Pain, director of the AI documentary film "Do You Trust This Computer?" and previously the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?". The new film is a powerful examination of artificial intelligence centered around insights from the most high-profile thinkers on the subject, including Elon Musk, Stuart Russell, Max Tegmark, Ray Kurzweil, Andrew Ng, Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan and many more. Chris set out to ask these leaders in the field "what scares smart people about AI", and they did not hold back. Directed by Chris Paine and executive produced by Paine and Tiffany Asakawa, Do You Trust This Computer? examines the promises and perils of this developing era. Science fiction has long anticipated the rise of machine intelligence. Today, a new generation of self-learning computers has begun to reshape every aspect of our lives. Incomprehensible amounts of data are being created, interpreted, and fed back to us in a tsunami of apps, personal assistants, smart devices, and targeted advertisements. Virtually every industry on earth is experiencing this transformation, from job automation, to medical diagnostics, even military operations. Do You Trust This Computer? explores the promises and perils of our new era. Will A.I. usher in an age of unprecedented potential, or prove to be our final invention? Featuring influential minds, including but not limited to: former Google Brain co-founder & director Andrew Ng, co-founder and CEO of Affectiva Rana el Kaliouby, Osaka University robotic engineer Hiroshi Ishiguro, engineer & entrepreneur Elon Musk, OpenAI director Shivon Zilis, and co- showrunner of HBO's Westworld, Jonathan Nolan. Director Chris Paine ((Who Killed The Electric Car?, Revenge of the Electric Car) joins us for a lively conversation on where we are and where we are heading with Artificial Intelligence. Phil and Stephen discuss the new film by Chris Paine, director of “Who Killed the Electric Car?” Do You Trust This Computer? doyoutrustthiscomputer.org This new documentary about the dangers and benefits of artificial intelligence (mostly the dangers) covers some serious subjects: AI and weapons Technology and Privacy issues Emergence of superintelligence Computers taking over A great lineup of AI luminaries discuss some pretty grim scenarios for how our AI-driven future might turn out. Phil contrasts the tone of the film with a recent essay by another big name in AI, Kai Fu Lee: We are here to create goo.gl/G48v8h All the dystopian talk is just nonsense. It’s too much imagination. We’re seeing AI going into new applications in what appears to be an exponential growth, but it's an exponential growth of applications of the mature technologies that exist. That growth will be over once we develop all of them. Then we have to wait for more breakthroughs for further advancement of AI. But you cannot predict further advancements. Who is right? And if Kai is wrong, what do we do about this? The film suggests “regulation” at the end, but there are big problems making that work. The surprising answer may be that we should NOT trust our computers and therefore we MUST push on with Artificial Intelligence research. Strange as that may seem. WT 424-737

New York City & Lower Hudson Valley Clean Communities, Inc (NYCLHVCC), The Federated Conservationists of Westchester County, Inc (FCWC) and the City of White Plains are co-hosting a two part event during White Plains Earth Week to educate residents of the Lower Hudson Valley on how they can reduce their carbon foot print by switching to Electric Vehicles. On April 18th a special screening of “Revenge of the Electric Car” directed by Chris Paine*, sponsored by BMW of Westchester, will start at 6PM at the Cinema De Lux in White Plains New York and will feature welcome remarks by Honorable Mayor Tom Roach of White Plains, NY. Chris Paine's earlier documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car?” (2006) questioned the role of the auto industry and government planners. His follow up documentary “Revenge of the Electric Car” (2011) documents four entrepreneurs from 2007 to 2010 who are fighting to see who will be the first to bring the electric car back in the mist of a global recession. My interview with Christina Ficcina, Executive Director for the NYC Lower Hudson Valley Clean Cities and leader of this event will talk to the Green Living Guy about the event.
First he accused GM of “Kill(ing) the Electric Car.” Then he took “Revenge” and got buddy-buddy with the giant company that created the Chevrolet Volt. But Chris Paine, director of the new documentary, “Revenge of the Electric Car,” hasn’t faced off against our resident EV skeptics. This week John McElroy and Peter De Lorenzo will attempt to navigate the EV hype and get down to the heart of the matter: are electric cars really here to stay? Of course we’ll get into the top news of the week as well: GM earnings disappoint, experts are sounding the overcapacity alarm in China and Lexus is calling it quits on the HS 250h. All that and much more on this week’s show.
