According to the United Nations, Sierra Leone is one of the countries most exposed to coastal erosion. More than two million people are threatened by rising sea levels. Even the capital, Freetown, and its informal settlements – built by reclaiming land from the sea – are on the brink of sinking. A phenomenon caused by climate change, but exacerbated by human activity. Submersion is accelerated by the country's extreme poverty, which pushes the population to destroy their environment in order to survive. FRANCE 24's Caitlin Kelly, Saidu Bah, Sarah Sakho and Simon Martin report.

Join us for an enlightening episode where we explore the dynamic intersections between music and leadership. Our insightful guests, Amir Sabirović, Rik Spann, and Simon Martin, draw parallels between jazz bands, rock bands, and symphony orchestras to delve into the diverse structures of organizations and their unique approaches to innovation, communication, and change. Throughout this episode, our guests share valuable insights on the importance of clear communication, building trust, and fostering an environment where ideas can flourish. They illustrate how metaphors can provide a fresh perspective on leadership, encouraging leaders to step back, reassess, and create space for others to shine. Tune in to discover how you can apply these musical metaphors to enhance your leadership style, embrace innovation, and lead your organization with a harmonious blend of structure and creativity. Key Quotes: “A jazz band is like a startup – flexible, innovative, and always improvising. A rock band is a scale-up, needing some structure but still retaining its creative edge. A symphony orchestra represents a corporate entity – highly organized, with every note carefully planned.” - Amir Sabirović “In jazz, when something unexpected happens, it's not seen as a mistake but as an opportunity. It's about embracing the disruption and finding new ways to create harmony.” - Rik Spann “Conversations are the vehicles for change. They are where ideas are born and evolve. Much like jazz, where each musician listens and responds to the others, effective leadership is about listening and responding to the needs and ideas of the team.” - Simon Martin “It's about being comfortable with the uncomfortable. Leaders need to adapt and continue, much like jazz musicians do when they encounter unexpected changes.” - Amir Sabirović “We assume others understand our intentions without clear communication, leading to misunderstandings and missed opportunities.” - Amir Sabirović “Using analogies like the jazz band can create a safe space for discussion. It allows leaders to step back and view their roles and the organization's dynamics differently, fostering innovation and collaboration.” - Simon Martin “That's leadership: knowing when to intervene and when to step back, creating space for others to shine.” - Rik Spann “Innovation comes from challenging the status quo and being open to new ideas, even if it means failing along the way.” - Amir Sabirović Don't miss this unique blend of music and management that inspires you to lead creatively and confidently.

'The thing about my work is that there is a tension between a passionate love and engagement with the traditions of the past and a complete impatience with their irrelevance and it's trying to hold those things in tension and trying to engage people in the complexities of that.' Cathie Pilkington, R.A. Cathie Pilkington creates surreal, uncanny and ambivalent forms which are designed to unsettle and provoke. She employs a deliberate lack of hierarchy in her materials, using textiles and found objects alongside more traditional sculptural practices. Her work is often presented as an immersive installation, bringing themes of the domestic and everyday life into the language of sculpture. During our interviews with Cathie Pilkington in the Royal Academy, her studio and a sculpture foundry, we discuss the barriers to women pursuing careers as sculptors, how sculpture can remain relevant and how an artist can make figurative sculpture that speaks to contemporary audiences. We met her at a pivotal point in her career, taking increasing control and asking questions about the future of sculpture.

In this episode, I’m interviewing Gina Buenfeld-Murley, exhibitons curator of the Camden Art Centre and co-curator of the online exhibition The Botanical Mind. In this episode, we go deep into the relation between art and the natural world and talk about sacred geometry, indigenous art, symbolism, Jung, the mysterious Voynich manuscript and why this exhibition is so pertinent given the current relationship humans have to the rest of nature. Dr Ian Bedford’s Bug of the Week: Pollen beetles This episode is brought to you by the team at The Real Soil Company. Launched to the market in 2020 The Real Soil Company proudly offers new organic, peat-free SuperSoil. Packed full of organic nutrients for optimal plant health, SuperSoil’s natural ‘boosters’ will stimulate quicker plant establishment and better resilience against pests and disease, whilst also enabling edible crops to benefit from nutritional enhancement and a higher crop yield.  The enhanced soil also offers better water retention and release for optimum plant growth, whilst providing a more balanced and workable material for gardeners.  What we talk about: Sacred geometry and that patterns that are found in nature and in entheogenic experiences and which occur at the micro and macro level Georgio Griffa’s writing, which forms part of the exhibition, talks of art and science two being in extricably linked. How do seemingly pre-determined and logical patterns such as fractals influence art? Do the patterns stop being science when they are recreated by a human hand?  How can we be inspired by indigenous art and nature appreciation, both past and present, whilst avoiding cultural appropriation or slipping into romanticism?  The Voynich Manuscript The significance of Jung’s archetypes in relation to botany About The Botanical Mind and Gina Buenfeld-Murley Humanity’s place in the natural order is under scrutiny as never before, held in a precarious balance between visible and invisible forces: from the microscopic threat of a virus to the monumental power of climate change. Drawing on indigenous traditions from the Amazon rainforest; alternative perspectives on Western scientific rationalism; and new thinking around plant intelligence, philosophy and cultural theory, The Botanical Mind Online investigates the significance of the plant kingdom to human life, consciousness and spirituality across cultures and through time. It positions the plant as both a universal symbol found in almost every civilisation and religion across the globe, and the most fundamental but misunderstood form of life on our planet. Gina Buenfeld-Murley is Exhibitions Curator at Camden Art Centre, London where she has co-curated The Botanical Mind: Art, Mysticism and The Cosmic Tree (2020-21); A Tale of Mother’s Bones: Grace Pailthorpe, Reuben Mednikoff and the Birth of Psychorealism (2019); Athanasios Argianas, Hollowed Water (2020); Wong Ping, Heart Digger (2019); Yuko Mohri, Voluta, (2018); Joachim Koester, In the Face of Overwhelming Forces (2017); João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva, Papagaio (2015); Bonnie Camplin (2016) and Rose English (2016). Recent independent curatorial projects include Gäa: Holistic Science and Wisdom Tradition, at Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange, Cornwall, and Origin Story, at The Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art, Turku, Finland (both 2019). In 2017 she was curatorial resident at Helsinki International Curatorial Programme, Finland and has been researching the place of plants within indigenous cultures in Europe and South America, including in Finnish Lapland (Samí shamanism) and in the Colombian, Peruvian and Brazilian areas of the Amazon Rainforest where she researched the sacred geometries and music of the Yawanawa, Huni Kuin and Shipibo-Conibo peoples. In 2014-15 she was curator-in-residence with Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT) and established Tokyo Correspondence, a series of exhibitions, residencies and research visits, facilitating cultural dialogue between artists in the UK and Japan and curated At the Still Point of the Turning World at Shibaura House Tokyo, featuring work by Manon de Boer; Joachim Koester; Simon Martin; Ursula Mayer; Jeremy Millar; Sriwhana Spong; Jesse Wine; and Caroline Achaintre. She was previously Director at Alison Jacques Gallery, London. Links The Botanical Mind Online Camden Art Centre on Facebook

Dame Elisabeth Frink, R.A. (1930-1993) “She respected herself. She took herself seriously and she took the work seriously, due to the nature of the work. She knew what it was she wanted to explore.” Annette Ratuszniak, Curator, Frink Estate.   In 1973 Elisabeth Frink became the first female sculptor to be elected as a Royal Academician. Frink was born into an army family, and her childhood was overshadowed by the Second World War. This experience, and other upheavals of the 20th century, led her to ask fundamental questions about the nature of humanity in her work. In an artworld increasingly dominated by abstraction, Frink remained resolute in her commitment to working both figuratively and in bronze. When Frink died in 1993 she had created over 400 sculptures, many of which are well-known public commissions.    In Episode 2, we explore hidden narratives in Frink’s career, and consider how artists can be sidelined by the ‘art world’ yet remain popular with the public. We also consider the impact an artist’s family has on their posthumous reputation and how this is managed.     “A lot of her work resonates in a really contemporary way.” Cathie Pilkington, RA, First Female Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy. With contributions from: ·      Simon Martin, Director, Pallant House Gallery ·      Annette Ratuszniak, Curator, The Elisabeth Frink Estate ·      Sam Johnston, Director, Dorset History Centre ·      Cathie Pilkington, R.A. ·      Clare Lilley, Director of Programme, Yorkshire Sculpture Park The sound recordings of Elisabeth Frink (00.00.27-00.00.42) are from Artists' Lives run by National Life Stories (https://www.bl.uk/projects/national-life-stories-artists-lives) in partnership with the British Library.  Audio (c) British Library Board  With thanks also to Dorset History Centre  https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/libraries-history-culture/dorset-history-centre/dorset-history-centre.aspx Image: Elisabeth Frink with Soldiers Head, courtesy of the Frink Estate For works discussed in this episode and more photographs of Frink, see the @sculptinglives Instagram feed.

When ESPN anchor Stuart Scott passed away from cancer this past January, he was widely hailed for his innovative style, which mixed heavy does of African American slang and pop culture references. His signature phrases are now commonly used terms in the American lexicon: “As cool as the other side of the pillow” and, of course, “Boo-Yah!” After the announcer’s death, Barack Obama remarked that Scott “helped usher in a new way to talk about our favorite teams and the day’s best plays.” No disrespect to America’s Sports Fan-in-Chief, but already a century before Stuart Scott was dropping quotes from Shakespeare and Tupac Shakur in his game summaries, Pierce Egan was mixing the Bard and street slang into his sports writing. An Irish-born printshop worker, Egan moved from manning the presses to take up the pen, writing sketches about life in early-nineteenth-century London. In particular, Egan wrote about the world of boxing, an illegal activity that brought together upper- and lower-class enthusiasts. Egan wrote prolifically about the matches (surreptitiously staged at out-of-the-way rural spots), the fighters, the patrons and fans. As David Snowdon shows in his book Writing the Prizefight: Pierce Egan’s Boxiana World (Peter Lang, 2013), Egan’s accounts – published in multiple volumes titled Boxiana –painted a vivid picture of the early boxing community, known as “the Fancy.” Egan also established a distinctive style for writing about sport, one that mixed classical analogies, high literary references, and the vernacular of London’s lower classes. The blend inspired later English writers of the 19th century, and its echoes are still heard in the rapid-fire, pop culture-saturated style of today’s ESPN announcers. David’s book was awarded the 2014 Lord Aberdare Literary Prize by the British Society of Sports History. You find all this and more in Simon Martin‘s history of Italian sports, Sport Italia: The Italian Love Affair with Sport (I.B.Tauris, 2011). Simon’s book is sports history at its best–that is, it’s history at its fullest. As you hear in the interview, Italian sport offers a window to understanding the country’s uneven economic development, its fractious politics, the ideology and aesthetics of Fascism, the unrelenting weight of corruption, the role of the Catholic Church, and the persistent divide between North and South. Above all, there is the unresolved question of what it means to be Italian. Metternich’s adage that “Italy is only a geographical expression”still holds a kernel of truth, some 150 years after the Risorgimento. One of Simon’s principal arguments is that sport is the one thing which most consistently binds the country together. Simon’s book was awarded the 2012 Lord Aberdare Literary Prize, presented each year by the British Society for Sports History. This was the second time he’s received the award, having won in 2004 for his history of Italian football under Fascism. You can also find interviews with other winners of the Aberdare Prize in the New Books in Sports archive: the 2011 winners, Chris Young and Kai Schiller, talking about their book on the 1972 Munich Olympics; and Tony Collins on his history of English rugby union, which won the award for 2010.         Learn more about your ad choices.
