Programmation musicale : Jim Sullivan - So Natural.

Dimitri and Khalid embark on a metajourney into a largely forgotten episode of Irish-American history: the rise and fall of an alleged secret society called the “Molly Maguires” in 1870s Pennsylvania coal country, whose violent activities struck fear into the hearts of Nativist mine bosses and Philadelphia railroad tycoons. But that's only one side of an incredibly complicated story of industrial capitalism, early labor unions, megalomaniacal silk toppers, ethnic fear-mongering, media manipulation, private intelligence agencies, and the violence that baptized Modern America… For access to premium SJ episodes, upcoming installments of DEMON FORCES, and the Grotto of Truth Discord, become a subscriber at patreon.com/subliminaljihad.

The Battle for Clean Energy in Coal Country

Montana has a long history of making money by extracting and exporting its natural resources, namely coal. State politicians and Montana's largest electricity utility company seem set on keeping it that way.  Reveal's Jonathan Jones travels to the town of Colstrip in the southeastern part of the state. It is home to one of the largest coal seams in the country – and one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the West. He learns that Montana's largest power company, NorthWestern Energy, has expanded its stake in the plant, even though it's the single biggest emitter of greenhouse gas in the state. Jones speaks with Colstrip's mayor about the importance of coal mining to the local community. He also speaks to local ranchers and a tribal official who've been working for generations to protect the water and land from coal development.   Jones follows the money to the state's capital, where lawmakers have passed some of the most extreme laws to keep the state from addressing climate change. He dives into lobbying records behind a flurry of bills that are keeping the state reliant on fossil fuels. He meets with one of the plaintiffs involved in a first-of-its-kind youth-led lawsuit. The group successfully sued Montana for violating their constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment.” Jones also finds that NorthWestern is planning to build a new methane gas plant on the banks of the Yellowstone River, and the company is being met with resistance from people who live near the site.  Finally, Jones visits the state's largest wind farm and speaks with a renewable energy expert, who says Montana can close its coal plants, never build a new gas plant and transition to 100% clean energy while reducing electricity costs for consumers. Jones also speaks with NorthWestern's CEO and looks at other coal communities in transition.    This is an update of an episode that originally aired in June 2023. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Aug. 27  FedEx gifts Marshall's aviation program with a CF6 engine…Groups work together to revitalize WV's Coal Country…and the Bridgeport airport offers a chance to fly in a Stearman bi-plane…on today's Daily304. #1 – From MARSHALL UNIVERSITY – Transport and logistics giant FedEx has given a jet engine from its fleet of aircraft to the Aviation Maintenance Technology program at Marshall University.  The engine, a General Electric CF6 motor from a retired McDonnel Douglas DC-10 aircraft, will be used in the daily classroom instruction of AMT students as they work toward their powerplant certification. “Donations like the CF6 allow our students to have hands-on experience working on large transport category aircraft systems,” said Jim Smith, director of the AMT program at Marshall.  “The CF6 is one of the most common large transport category engines in the world and will be what most of our students will work on when they enter the industry. Having a partner like FedEx provides our program with materials that we may not be able to acquire otherwise and helps provide our students with options in the industry that will enrich the overall student experience.” The AMT program is part of Marshall's larger Division of Aviation, which also includes a professional pilot program through Marshall's Bill Noe Flight School.  Read more: https://www.marshall.edu/news/2023/08/fedex-gifts-cf6-engine-to-marshalls-aviation-maintenance-technology-program/   #2 – From GRIST –  Growing up in Huntington, Lindsey Crittendon always knew she might have to leave home in search of job opportunities. She went to college to be an engineer, but after graduating, managed to find a job in her hometown—working in child protective services. Though she loved serving her community, the hours were grueling, and taking time off was difficult.  When she heard about an opportunity to learn computer coding through a program offered by Generation West Virginia, a non-profit helping boost access to employment and educational opportunities across the state, she leapt at the chance.  Generation West Virginia is one of a number of organizations now striving to revitalize the state's economy, which has historically relied heavily on the coal industry.  Heidi Binko, the executive director and co-founder of Just Transition Fund, a national organization assisting communities impacted by the legacy of coal power and mining, says that helping successful projects like Generation West Virginia scale up is essential.  Just Transition Fund raises funding and distributes it to partners across the country, including through the organization's recently launched Federal Access Center. This Center provides grants and technical assistance to help communities and smaller organizations overcome some of these kinds of logistical hurdles. Read more: https://grist.org/sponsored/redefining-coal-country-just-transition-fund/   #3 – From WBOY Clarksburg – “Off we go into the wild blue yonder…” The Capital Wing of the Commemorative Airforce is offering Stearman bi-plane rides next month in Bridgeport. Bi-plane rides will take place at the North Central West Virginia Airport from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8. Tickets for the 30-minute flight on a Boeing PT-17 Stearman can be ordered in advance online. A new rule proposed by the Labor Department could help limit coal miners' exposure to a toxic dust called silica.  “The purpose of this proposed rule is simple: prevent more miners from suffering from debilitating and deadly occupational illnesses by reducing their exposure to silica dust,” Chris Williamson, assistant secretary for mine, safety and health, said in a statement. “Silica overexposures have a real-life impact on a miner's health.” Williamson has said the proposal was inspired, in part, by FRONTLINE and NPR's 2019 investigation, which exposed a link between silica dust and an epidemic of severe black lung disease. Our documentary Coal's Deadly Dust highlighted the resurgence of black lung — and how federal regulators and the industry had failed to protect miners.  “Struggling for Breath in Coal Country” was originally released alongside the film in 2019. In this archival episode of The FRONTLINE Dispatch, correspondent Howard Berkes spoke with coal miners whose lives were forever changed when they were diagnosed with the disease. Coal Country Killing: A Culture, A Union, And The Murders That Changed It All, revolves around the cold-blooded 1969 assassination of United Mineworkers of America “reform candidate” Jock Yablonski, and murder of his wife and daughter in their Pennsylvania farmhouse. But driving the story are the extraordinary efforts of a tenacious special prosecutor and his “army” of investigators to bring the gunmen, the union boss who ordered the murders, and his henchmen who saw them carried out, to justice.Initially, three bumbling small-time criminals, dubbed “The Hillbilly Hitmen,” were arrested and charged. But they were the tip of the iceberg as the murders were directed by then-UMWA President “Tough Tony” Boyle as revenge for Yablonski running against him in the bitterly contested 1968 union election and to prevent his corruption from being exposed.Up against the tight-lipped culture of Appalachia coal country, legendary Philadelphia homicide prosecutor Richard A. Sprague, and his investigators, spent nearly nine years doggedly working their way up the ladder of those responsible to the final showdown with Boyle.Written by New York Times bestselling authors—former New York County Assistant District Attorney Robert K. Tanenbaum, a lifelong friend of Sprague's, and Steve Jackson—Coal Country Killing is a tour de force for those who love justice. When its run was cut short by COVID-19, the pair pivoted and wrote The Line, a documentary play based on firsthand interviews with NYC medical first responders at the height of the pandemic, starring Lorraine Toussaint, John Ortiz, Alison Pill, Santino Fontana and more. Also a NYT Critics' Pick, The Line garnered rave reviews from coast to coast and was viewed by over 85,000 people in 50 countries. Coal Country recently reopened commercially at the Cherry Lane Theater in 2022 to massive critical acclaim, produced by the Public and Audible, and was recorded for Audible Theater (Signal Award for Best Drama) . Montana has a long history of making money by extracting and exporting its natural resources, namely coal. State politicians and Montana's largest electricity utility company seem set on keeping it that way.  Reveal's Jonathan Jones travels to the southeastern part of the state, to a town called Colstrip. It is home to one of the largest coal seams in the country – and one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the West. He finds the state's single largest power company, NorthWestern Energy, recently expanded its share in the Colstrip power plant and is planning to build a new methane gas plant on the banks of the Yellowstone River. Meanwhile, in the state capital of Helena, lawmakers have passed a flurry of bills to ensure the state's continued reliance on fossil fuels. NorthWestern supports many of these bills, including one of the most extreme laws to keep the state from addressing climate change. Jones follows the money behind the coal expansion in Montana and the local and statewide resistance efforts to push the state toward clean energy.  Support Reveal's journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenow Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/newsletter Connect with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

McDowell County, West Virginia, in the heart of what used to be coal country, is one of the most impoverished counties in the US — a place that embodies the challenges facing many American areas in transition. But something new is happening there; it's called Reconnecting McDowell, a multi-partner effort, led by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Can education be the driver of local economic and social development in one of the poorest places in the US? What if the best anti-poverty program is investing in teachers and children? In this episode, for May 1, a traditional labor holiday around the world, we take a look at Reconnecting McDowell and speak to some of the beneficiaries. Drawing on some of the labor movement's earliest traditions, could this partnership between local drive and national commitment provide a model for the future?“I feel like we are coming back to serve and coming back to plant seeds in an area where we have let our seeds and the grass wither and go dry. They currently teach their workshops at Primary Stages school ESPA. Amelia teaches at Pace University in their FTVC B.F.A. Acting program. What makes Amelia nervous about auditions: Expectations for what good means What is your personal best? Rejection is constant That little voice still shows up "The biggest thing you have to sell is yourself." Humans are messy and flawed, and you have to remember as an actor you have to be that too. Prepping for an audition: First step: Script analysis Start to get a sense of what I'm wearing and hair Shoes can even help Read it and move around You have to think of an audition as your role for the time you are working on it “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever has.” Learn to apologize less. Tips for Newbie Actors: Pay attention You don't know everything Be interested and curious Want to learn and grow Choose to grow into the best version of yourself What is that? What does that look like? It's ok to be new and it's ok not to say anything. When in doubt leave it out. Listen and absorb.
