Justin Wexler returns to Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley to share his vast wealth of knowledge about the Indigenous People who used to inhabit the Catskill Mountains and the surrounding area. Understanding the past practices employed by the native inhabitants, we can better steward our natural environment today. When first encountered by European settlers, the Lenape were a loose association of closely related peoples who spoke similar languages and shared familial bonds in an area which spanned what is now eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Lower Hudson Valley to the lower Catskills, and eastern Delaware. Many area locations are still referred to by names from these indigenous peoples. Hereditary leadership passed through the maternal line. They lived in several small towns along the rivers and streams that fed the waterways. Agricultural land was managed by women and allotted according to the subsistence needs of their extended families. As Justin researched the history of the Hudson Valley and its occupants, he made connections with descendants of the Lenape, now dispersed to communities in Ontario, Wisconsin and Oklahoma. After befriending residents of those communities, he hosted Lenape people who came to visit their homeland. He continues to make links with organizations that would help represent their culture and history. Each weekend throughout the summer, Justin and his partner, Anna Plattner, invite visitors to the property, Wild Hudson Valley, to learn about edible plants, medicine, folklore, history, and both ancient and modern forest farming practices. They offer guided nature walks and workshops geared toward all ages. Their programs help both children and adults connect with nature. Listen to this episode to reconnect with the culture of the Hudson Valley's native inhabitants and get inspired to learn more about nature, history, and wild foods. Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America
While a “Red Wave” of victories did not materialize for Republicans earlier this month on election day in most parts of the country, conservatives won big here in New York gaining congressional seats as well as seats in the New York State Assembly and Senate. Republican Lee Zeldin centered his gubernatorial campaign around a false and racist narrative on crime, that dominated media coverage, and it was almost enough to defeat Governor Kathy Hochul, who ran a lackluster campaign despite a large fundraising haul. The New York Times reported earlier this week that Republican ad blitzes focused on crime, motivated voters to head to the polls in suburban Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley, despite many of those voters living in some of the safest places in the country, where crime rates have flattened and that many of them had exaggerated views about crime rates in New York City, which are still well below where they were for decades. Today we're joined live by Nomi and DJ to break down some of the misinformation that blanketed the airways before the election. Nomi is the Constituent Services and Organizing Manager for Council Member Tiffany Caban and worked with DJ and other volunteers from the district to create a Public Safety Resource poster along with Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani's office. We'll talk to Nomi and DJ about how socialist are not only battling right-wing propaganda stoking fear of crime, but organizing for real public safety in our communities and dignity for all. We'll also talk to Michaelangelo with Mid-Hudson Valley DSA about what Neoliberal Democrats are getting wrong in their post-election analysis and how centering socialist messaging led Sarahana Shrestha to victory in her Assembly race in the Hudson Valley. To join a Public Safety Canvass in Western Queens on Saturday, December 3, visit: Bit.ly/safetycanvass

At a young age, he came to appreciate the value of a founding document that protects the rights of its citizens, and prevents atrocities like those experienced by his grandparents. As an adult, Tzvi became an advocate of the Second Amendment and worked on creating a large network of like minded people in his community. Tzvi founded the NYS Jewish Gun Club and the United Jewish Gun Coalition to promote responsible gun ownership in Jewish communities. Today's episode is a very special interview with my good friend and editor, AJ Harper, who has done more for raising the bar for writing good books than anyone I know. Generally, a ‘good' book doesn't simply function as a “better business card” or marketing tool for a personal brand or business. Rather, a ‘good' book becomes a “must-read” that readers actively recommend to others. In this conversation, AJ shares her “reader-first” philosophy and her insights into how to write a perennial bestseller that truly serves your reading audience. Using her wealth of experience and knowledge, AJ talks us through how a book can become a “top three book” that changes lives (including your own!). She also gives us a sneak peek into her own new book, Write a Must Read. Broadcast originally aired on Monday, November 15, 9:30 am, on WRCR 1700AMSpies! Loyalists! Tories! Conspiracy! Strange messages? Codes in invisible ink?We turned our attention to Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York, the new book by A. J. Schenkman. The author was interviewed by host Clare Sheridan. The American Revolution was first and foremost a civil war that tore at the very fabric of families, as well as society. Patriots were determined to separate from England, while Loyalists were just as determined to defeat what they saw as a rebellion. Many do not know that during several critical periods, the war was almost fatally undermined by English sympathizers or, in some cases, opportunistic Patriots. Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York is a compilation of twelve stories regarding important moments in New York State's history during the American Revolution. About the Author: A.J. Schenkman teaches history in the Lower Hudson Valley and writes about the history of Ulster and Orange counties. He is the Town of Gardiner Historian. Since his start writing for local newspapers, Schenkman has branched out into writing for magazines, blogs, and academic journals in history and other subjects. In addition to his current book, he has written others, including Unexpected Bravery: Women and Children of the Civil War, which is now out in paperback. In a tumble of scenes set here on the banks of the Lower Hudson Valley, Irving animates the romantic, the longing, and the American moments that form this notoriously inconclusive tale. Perhaps at the other end, you'll have some questions, like we did: What is all this humor doing in such a sad tale? Where do our sympathies lie with the hardworking, greedy Ichabod Crane? — When we go through hard times in life it is so easy to get caught up in seeing everything with a cloud over it. This is especially true when someone has offended or hurt us deeply. We start to see ourselves as a victim and the longer we think that way, the more we lose the ability to handle situations well. Sometimes going from victim to master may require outside help. Dianne McKim has helped clients make this transition and have seen them begin a new and fresh walk-in freedom. Valeria Teles interviews Dianne McKim — a Multi-Certified Leadership, Life, Empowerment Coach, Strengths Champion Certified Coach®, Director DivorceCare for Women, Author, Speaker, Workshop Facilitator. Dianne McKim, Principal of Precious Stones Coaching, has experienced many challenging and heartbreaking life circumstances giving her a unique perspective to connect deeply with her clients. She is an abusive relationship survivor, has navigated through a long and difficult divorce which resulted in her running a household, working full time in corporate America, and raising children simultaneously as a single mom for 14 years. She has dealt with family issues, the loss of jobs, friends that came and went, family members passing away, and very low self-esteem. After her divorce, she had to rebuild her life, rediscover herself and strengthen her confidence. As she did, she learned how to stand strong in her abilities, understand her value and embrace her identity. As her confidence grew, she discovered how to have professional success, personal contentment, and spiritual fulfillment. Today she walks in the freedom she was designed and created to enjoy. Her life verse is from Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Married with 2 children, 2 step-children, and 1 grandchild, Dianne grew up in and lives in New York's Lower Hudson Valley. She loves the beach (her true happy place), working on jigsaw puzzles, worship music, studying the Bible, and spending time with family and friends. Ever since I can remember, car-shopping has always been a big deal in my family. Yet, it has changed so much: as a little girl, I remember walking to a bank with my dad. When he explained to a teller what kind of money order he needed to pay the deposit on a new car, he finally opened a plastic bag he had been holding all along, and took out piles of cash - arguably the most cash I have seen in my life! "Wow!" I exclaimed enthusiastically, only to be told that it wasn't worth all that much - Yugoslavia had a real problem with inflation at the time. Besides, dad added, "We won't know what kind of car we'll get. They will send us whatever is available." 30-or-so years later, I was sitting in a local diner with my husband near our home in the Lower Hudson Valley in New York. "We should take a drive to that car dealer. Let's go see the car you keep telling me about," I suggested, simply articulating a nudge that I felt. Stevie Wonder might have delighted us all with his "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" love song, but the Universe's work is just as smooth...when we let it. And, when we are super clear on what we want. See, unlike the experience I shared with my dad, that left us wondering what we will get, this time around we knew exactly what we wanted. But, it's how it all came to be that is so powerful that I simply had to share it with you in its very own episode.

My guest today is Enid Weishaus. Enid is an innovative social worker, who has utilized her skills in the medical, philanthropic and politic arenas. She grew up in Chicago, Illinois, began her career as an infant stimulation teacher, then when she moved to NYC, she became director of the philanthropic program at American Express, before becoming a Regional Director for Lower Hudson Valley for Hillary Clinton during Clinton’s tenure as U.S. Senator from NY. Enid attributes her social consciousness that is infused in everything she does, to her parents who were Holocaust survivors and immigrants. In fact, the trauma and plight of humanity that Enid’s ancestors endured has made it natural for Enid to be so invested in humanity, taking responsibility for our history of cruelty, and being an advocate for social justice. Enid has reverence for nature, a joy for dancing and a passion for advocating for Women’s Issues.. A few years back, Enid developed a one-day forum for women called “Smarter, Bolder, Older: Redefining Life after 50”. Enid inspires women to own their wisdom, their life experience, ask themselves who they are and who they want to become. She is applying these questions to the aging process, bringing consciousness to the insights of a fairly new term: “elderhood”. Her husband, Bob Stien, was also a guest on my podcast, episode #85. Hear how these 2 inspiring people enrich my life. Enjoy the podcast! Links: You Tube: Smarter, Bolder, Older

RadioRotary interviews Suffern Rotarian Larry Palant, membership chair for Rotary District 7210, about changes in Rotary membership opportunities and ways to increase membership in Rotary clubs, including new types of clubs that have been invented to make membership easier for the very busy young professionals. Today, about half the clubs in the eight-country District 7210 meet weekly for lunch, but increasingly as members from the spread-out hamlets and villages of the Lower Hudson Valley have less time to travel to a meeting for lunch, clubs are meeting for breakfast, dinner, or just for drinks. For example, some clubs meet for lunch two or three times a month, then have a dinner meeting that supports a local charity. The e-club, with members from around the world (but still in the District) is a popular option, while Mr. Palant also describes a new “passport club” concept, in which members only meet four times a year, but can use their passports to work on projects with other Rotarians in between meetings. Increasingly also, clubs are accepting corporate members, usually so that several employees of a corporation can be sponsored as members of a local Rotary Club. His follow up documentary “Revenge of the Electric Car” (2011) documents four entrepreneurs from 2007 to 2010 who are fighting to see who will be the first to bring the electric car back in the mist of a global recession. My interview with Christina Ficcina, Executive Director for the NYC Lower Hudson Valley Clean Cities and leader of this event will talk to the Green Living Guy about the event.
