My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/   There was a time 20 years ago where if you filmed a horror movie on a tight enough budget, you could plausibly turn a profit from the DVD sales alone. Unfortunately for Chris Sharpe, his entry into the horror genre came just as the DVD market was collapsing, and so his career as a movie director fizzled out after he made only one film.    Luckily, one of the stars of that film, Hilah Johnson, had a strong onscreen presence and a penchant for cooking, and together they launched Hilah Cooking, a YouTube channel that eventually grew to over 450,000 subscribers. Then a few years later Chris teamed up with another co-star from that movie, Adriene Mishler, to launch Yoga With Adriene, which now has over 13 million subscribers on YouTube.   In a recent interview, Chris walked through how he and his collaborators launched both channels, why Hilah decided to eventually end her channel, and the massive success they've seen building a yoga streaming app.

I don't know if something is in the air but things are getting rougher for indie filmmakers every day. I received a call today from a few filmmakers who are having major issues with the on-demand theatrical booking company TUGG, Inc. It seems that the company has shut its doors and left filmmakers in the dark.If you have read my new book Rise of the Filmtrepreneur®: How to Turn Your Indie Film into a Moneymaking Business, you know that I wrote an entire chapter highlighting TUGG and the amazing case study of the film Touch the Wall. These filmmakers made over $700K using Tugg. They have been working well with the independent film community for years so this call was a bit surprising.While speaking to a friend of the show and producer of Chris Sharpe, I started digging to see what I could find out. After doing some searches I found out that all of Tugg's social media accounts had been closed but their website is still up but so was Distribber's if you remember. I called their 866 customer support number but only got a machine. This is exactly what happened with Distribber. A company trying to close quietly.

Alex started music in 7th grade with a teacher named Ken Wilson, who was gracious enough to let Alex do chores to pay for lessons. He studied at University of Lynchburg for 2 years under Ed McKinis, Brian Mesko, Chris Sharpe, Chris McGee, and Johnson Scott. Alex then transferred to the Los Angeles College of Music, and took classes with Jerry Watts Jr., John Avila (of Oingo Boingo), Peter Boscovich, Key Kim, Marke Brown, Tim Landers (Billy Cobham, Al di Meloa), Steve Jenkins, and Steve Billman. He has been in ensembles directed by Mitch Foreman (Mahavishnu Orchestra), Brian Pezzone (Animaniacs), Carlos Campos, and Steve Pemberton. He graduated this past March of 2022, and has his sights eventually set on Nashville, but for the time being, Roanoke is home, and he is wanting to get back into the community and play.
