In this episode, I'm sharing some of my takeaways from my Level Up Mastermind Retreat in early April in Thomasville, Georgia. I'm always learning from my retailers and amazed by their ideas and this retreat was no different. There is something very inspiring about getting a group of like-minded people together who are working toward a similar goal: running a successful independent retail shop. I hope these takeaways inspire you to try something new to move the needle in your retail business. Takeaways for Independent Retailers: Bravery is contagious: It's important to surround yourself with people who are on your side. Making a decision and being brave enough to stick to it when you see the needle starting to move and/or having the courage to course correct if it's not working Collaborations & community are super hot right now: Everyone in your community has the same goal: growing and thriving in a community that supports them. Look to your community for inspiring people: Annie Jones of The Bookshelf in Thomasville showed us that building multiple revenue streams and marketing differently works. Yelena Klompus came to the U.S. with a purpose. In an effort to keep her family safe and raise her son with better access to healthcare, she has been able to use her academic credentials and professional experience from her native country, Russia, to create impactful library programs in the U.S. As the Manager of Multicultural and English Language Literacy Programs at the Ferguson Library in Stamford, CT, she has been able to connect thousands of immigrants and English language learners to programs and resources that provide a pathway to self-sufficiency. She is empathetic to newcomers but is pragmatic in her approach in pointing people in a direction that helps them build confidence with their English skills and connects them to the community.
“Women of the Dirt” is designed for all ability levels and creates space for riders who are women. Guides work with riders on closed trails to build skills and camaraderie. I was at a marketing conference last month and heard a panelist tell the crowd that “Creators don't only have an audience, they've built a community.” This sounds valuable to advertisers but it puts creators at a disadvantage if they haven't focused on building a community. The PDX Free Little Art Gallery is a diorama that features miniature pieces of art and people browsing the gallery. It's located in the Foster Powell neighborhood near SE 57th ave and SE Rhone St. Onlookers are welcome to take or leave a piece. Gallery patrons stand at about 6 inches tall, and some of the pieces their viewing measure in at about 3 inches by 3 inches. I just had the pleasure of both speaking at and attending The Graceful Gathering—a boutique wedding photography conference—and I'm feeling pretty lit up. While I used to prioritize attending a couple conferences or workshops a year, COVID prevented these gatherings from happening.
