Send us a textIt's more than just a month! Elisa and Andrew discuss moving beyond traditional volunteer appreciation to sustainable volunteer management. In this episode of Association Transformation, they explore the unique challenges of membership organizations' reliance on volunteers, introducing a three-part approach: elevating volunteers as experts, celebrating their contributions, and providing meaningful rewards. They critique the "pay to volunteer" mindset while advocating for micro-volunteering opportunities that respect members' time. They emphasize the critical need to professionalize volunteer management by integrating it into organizational strategy, providing proper training for both staff and volunteers, and creating year-round appreciation practices rather than limiting recognition to designated periods like Volunteer Appreciation Month.Support the show

Ethical volunteer engagement is a cornerstone of nonprofit success, ensuring volunteers are valued as essential contributors. In small organizations, where resources may be limited, volunteers often provide critical support, but their roles must be thoughtfully designed to align with the mission and organizational capacity. Engaging volunteers ethically means recognizing their inherent value, providing clear role descriptions, and establishing policies that respect their contributions while preventing exploitation or misuse. By fostering transparency, trust, and collaboration between staff and volunteers, nonprofits can create a sustainable volunteer program that supports long-term community impact without compromising the integrity of their mission. In this episode, we are joined by Jessica Pang-Parks, a non-profit consultant for community and volunteer engagement. She helps organizations build trust, create impact, and inspire belonging. It is possible to integrate serving into your spiritual formation strategy in a practical and effective way. We're seeing churches all across the country do it. So, in part four of this series on Serving as Spiritual Formation, Tony interviews Pastor John Thomas from Mariners Church in California about The Rooted Experience. John shares how Rooted is helping people connect to faith and the church, why it is so effective and how Mariners Church encourages people to engage in serving opportunities as part of their spiritual formation. Before the pandemic, we typically saw 45% to 50% of all adults and students serving on a volunteer team at least monthly. Our most recent data shows churches reporting only 35% are serving today. In the first episode of this series on "Serving as Spiritual Formation," we talked about some of the most common mistakes churches make with their volunteer engagement strategy that are contributing to that shortage of volunteers. But in this second episode, we're going to look at the structural mistakes churches make that lead to low volunteer engagement. Tony and Amy talk about the structure of churches that engage the most volunteers in serving roles, and specifically, how this needs to be considered a spiritual formation issue. Most churches say they need more volunteers. But answer this honestly: What is your theology of serving? How well is your church discipling people to offer their spiritual gifts as part of the Great Commission? Many churches have gotten further away from viewing serving as an integral part of spiritual formation than they'd likely admit. In this series, Tony and Amy and special guests will share best practices on the strategy side of engaging people in serving, as well as critical elements of team-building and structure to engage more people using their gifts in the mission of your church. In the first episode, they unpack the strategy mistakes churches are often making that inhibit a strong volunteer engagement culture. In this week's episode, we welcome guest Dr. Mary Hyde from AmeriCorps to share some fascinating results from the most recent Volunteer Engagement and Civic Life census supplement. These results shine a light on both the enduring spirit of volunteerism in America – even during the height of the pandemic – and what the data can tell us about future trends in formal and informal volunteering. The latest Volunteering and Civic Engagement in America survey was conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic, and while the results showed an expected drop in formal volunteering (giving time freely to help others through an organization), there was actually no drop in informal volunteering (giving time freely to help others outside of an organizational context) nationwide. These results contradict the pervasive sense that “people just don't want to volunteer anymore.” Rather, it highlights the ongoing desire of individuals to serve their neighbors and communities in personally meaningful ways, without necessarily feeling the need to do so within the structure of a formal organization. Description: Erin shares her thoughts (in a very HILARIOUS way) on the difference between management and leadership, screening in vs screening out, the fact that YOU MATTER, why you should speak up (especially when you don't think you should) and being a contributor to the textbook that is shaping so many CVA's. Oh! She talks about her New E-Book New Voices and Perspectives and what inspired her to create it too! Don't miss it!A little more about Erin: Erin Spink, MA (Leadership)Founderspinktank – www.spinktank.ca Erin Spink's interest in volunteers started at the age of six when she pronounced that while it was wrong to eat animals, hamburgers at McDonald's came from “volunteer cows” and therefore an exception could be made. She completed a Certificate with Distinction in Volunteer Program Management, followed by an M.A. (Leadership) where she submitted the first-ever academic research quantifying the concept of “volunteer engagement”. Spink's thought-leadership work has been published around the world, including the CCVA accreditation textbook. She continues to author informative, cutting-edge research that advances the profession through her consulting firm - spinktank- which offers workshops, free resources, and online courses, and its research arm CARVE (Centre for Advanced Research in Volunteer Engagement). Erin had the honor of serving on the PAVRO Board for five years, including two as President. For the last several years, Erin has volunteered as a member of the Engage (formerly e-Volunteerism) Journal, leading the Training Designs section and now co-editor for the Ethics column. She has also co-authored the Points of View articles with Rob Jackson. Erin was recognized in 2017 with the Linda Buchanan Outstanding Leader of Volunteers award and in 2020 with the VMPC Exemplary Leader Award (First Place) for her contributions to the profession. After 20 years working in Volunteer Engagement, she has changed her mind and no longer believes in eating volunteers.Connect with Erin:Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erinrebeccaspink/ Engage Journal: https://engagejournal.org New E-Book: New Voices and Perspectives in Volunteer Engagement in 2023Learn more about how Nicole can help your volunteer program grow and flourish when you visitwww.nicolersmith.com

Courtney Tull joins us to talk about her work with volunteers and her journey - so far! Starting with her work as an AmeriCorps member she found a connection with the work of leading and engaging volunteers in the community. Since that first experience, Courtney has achieved her CVA (Certified in Volunteer Administration), her Masters in Administration of Human Services, and completed her Doctorate in Social Sciences. While working for Habitat for Humanity Sussex County in Delaware, Courtney began the research for her Doctorate - exploring her suspected connections between volunteering, well-being, and quality of life. She was right, and she confirmed that volunteers who understand and follow their motivations reap greater rewards from their service. Courtney shares how this data can provide the grounds to tailor recruitment and marketing strategies to match the work to the motivations of volunteers. Season 4 of the Time + Talent Podcast is here and we're finally caught up! Tobi and Jennifer are back with a second season of the year. We generally post one season per year; however Season 3 was posted earlier this year - having been delayed by COVID. Now, Tobi and Jenimfer are back on track to share innovative and inspirational stories from practitioners in the field of nonprofit volunteer and community engagement. The good news is that nonprofits are building back from COVID and a global pandemic and welcoming volunteers back to service. In this season, we spotlight organizations that made the best of the challenges posed by lockdowns and came out stronger and more resilient because of them. In some cases, leaders of volunteers are continuing initiatives they started in the pandemic that continue to have an impact on those who serve and those who benefit from these fresh ways of thinking and doing. It's a testament to the dedication and creativity of volunteer managers around the world and the volunteers who were willing to roll up their sleeves and dive in, even in the face of uncertainty. This season would not have been possible without the generosity of our guests who were willing to share their journeys with our audience. We thank each and every one of them for joining us to share their time and talent. We hope you enjoy Season 4 - please take a moment to subscribe, rate, and review. This helps us reach a wider audience of professionals just like you who may be in need of a little inspiration and good news.
