SPOILER-FREE pa rin! TV and film—it's not a genre. It's a lifestyle! We took a break last week so ito na ang aming revenge episode! Tikman niyo ang poot ng aming paghihiganti! So much to talk about, so little time. Simulan natin sa pinakabagong paiyak ng Netflix from director Benedict Mique, ang Lolo and the Kid! Let's talk about how Joel Torre and Euwenn Mikael Aleta served us a dose of family drama at pinanood naman natin. Tapos 'nun, hindi pwedeng hindi natin pag-usapan ang kakatapos lang na House of the Dragon Season 2! Ah, Alicent and Rhaenyra, ano nga bang nangyari sa season na 'to? Seriously, ano nga bang nangyari sa season na 'to? We also had an eventful weekend as we were able to catch two Cinemalaya films, Balota and Love Child. Kung kami lang ang masusunod, mas marami pa sana kaming napanood. Also, kung kami lang ang masusunod, mas marami pa sanang makanood ng mga pelikulang 'to. So allow us to tell you why you need to watch Marian Rivera, RK Bagatsing, and Jane Oineza in their Cinemalaya movies! And hindi lang 'yan, pinag-usapan din namin ang Men are from Q.C., Women are from Alabang na kakalabas lang din sa Netflix. Naniwala ba kami sa pag-ibig ni Heaven Peralejo and Marco Gallo? Let's talk about it in this episode! Tapos meron ding When I Met You in Tokyo, Master of the House, and Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam. Marami ba? Revenge episode nga diba? “Love can be a good thing and a bad thing, it can sometimes be a drug,” Rhian Ramos says about her new single ‘Body Crashes’. She knows many people will scoff at her newfound passion as an original musician, writing songs about love, but she’s unfazed. “For a long time I’ve been ashamed of my feelings… it takes a different set of guts to put something that you’ve written [out] because then everyone has the freedom to say, ‘You write bad’, or, ‘Your feelings are weird’. Luckily, we’re all our [own] worst critics, so there’s nothing that anyone can say to me that will hurt my feelings anymore.” It seems that what’s driving her is a renewed sense of freedom. She has just returned from a half-year stay in America, where she made the music video for ‘Body Crashes’. “I was in a place where every person is free,” and she had imbibed this freedom so deeply that the ‘Body Crashes’ MV ended up being almost too passionate for Philippine TV. Rhian also brings up the same thing about the local music scene, noting how interesting it is that everyone has the freedom to mix genres, how inspiring it is that everyone is allowed to write their own music now. In this special interview, Rhian talks about her motivations for pursuing a passion in music (“It’s nice to finally [sing], just to express”), her observations about the trajectory of the local music industry, and her source of ideas (and feelings) for the songs she writes—with bonus quips about ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Lost in Translation’. *** Rhian Ramos is one of the most sought-after actresses of Philippine cinema. Her recent film “Kung Paano Siya Nawala” added to her filmography where she proved her versatility. In “Kung Paano Siya Nawala”, she plays Shana, the love interest of a man suffering from face blindness. Some of her other memorable movie and TV performances include Sally in “Saving Sally” (2016), femme fatale Valerie in “Silong” (2015), and Althea in “The Rich Man’s Daughter” (2015). notes: To see the video version of this episode, click here: Link The official music video of Body Crashes is on Rhian Ramos’s YouTube channel A writeup of the event over at Reverse Delay is available here: ‘Body Crashes’ and the freedom to self-express: an interview with Rhian Ramos DJ’s live recording of Body Crashes: Link DJ’s incomplete recording of Napagod: Link

Behind the Screen Series: The Pacemaker and the Witness In this special sub-series of Third World Cinema Club, we take a look at the people involved in film production, whose work audiences see and feel on screen, but might not know about. For this episode, we talk to a filmmaking duo whose work speaks for itself. Editors are perhaps one of the most overlooked jobs in filmmaking, even though the fruits of their labor exist in plain sight. Editors and directors give movies their flow and rhythm, supplying the work with its beating heart. Chuck Gutierrez is a multi-award winning film editor, director and producer. His works have garnered recognition locally and in major film festivals around the world. On the other hand, documentary filmmakers are part of a critically important subset of filmmakers. They are witnesses in both senses of the word – as observers and as storytellers. Baby Ruth Villarama is a producer and director, best known for directing documentary films. Her 2016 film Sunday Beauty Queen won best picture in that year’s edition of the MMFF – the first such documentary to win the award. Other films include Little Azkals (2014) and Jazz in Love (2013). In this special episode of Third World Cinema Club’s Behind the Screen Series, Princess talk to two of the industry’s best about their filmmaking and creative process and how they shape lives and worlds through stories. Literally "One Night" in Bicolano, Sarong Banggi is a story of two people whose lives change after a chance encounter. Newcomer Angelo Ilagan plays a teen-coming-of-ager who meets and connects with a washed up but ephemeral prostitute played by Jaclyn Jose--who won an Urian (an Oscar equivalent) for this role.
