Religious Trauma and High-Control Religion: An Interview with Anna Clark Miller, LPC, LMHC Curt and Katie interview Anna Clark Miller about religious trauma. We explore what religious trauma and high-control religions are. We look at common mistakes therapists can make when working with religious trauma survivors as well as what therapy and healing can look like for these folks. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode, we talk about religious trauma and high-control religion We were interested to learn more about how therapists can support religious trauma survivors, so we reached out to an expert, Anna Clark Miller, to share her wisdom. What is religious trauma? ·      Complex trauma over a long period of time ·      Impacts to the nervous system ·      Traumatic beliefs about religion and the after life ·      Following rules and conforming to a religious group's idea of how someone should live What mistakes do therapists make when working with religious trauma survivors? ·      Therapists becoming the client's new spiritual authority ·      Clients using therapy to tell them how to think and live ·      Clients need to own themselves and their own minds, not work to please the therapist What does healing after leaving a “high control” religion look like? ·      The loss of so much, including social support, identity, etc. ·      Complex PTSD healing ·      How will I fit into the world? How will I talk with people? ·      Building hope for someone who is needing to completely remake their life and identity ·      The client needs to create a sense of safety within themselves ·      You can't “rip off the Band-Aid” with leaving a high control religious group ·      Helping clients with their judgment around their emotions (starting with observation before judging if it is good or bad) ·      Working with clients to examine their beliefs (over time) What is included in the treatment for religious trauma survivors ·      Noticing one's body ·      Exploring and reimagining healthy relationships ·      Identity work ·      Deconstruction of topics based on what the client is thinking, feeling, etc. ·      Addressing spiritual bypassing ·      Not just “mindfulness” due to concerns about secular psychology Stay in Touch with Curt, Katie, and the whole Therapy Reimagined #TherapyMovement: Our Linktree: https://linktr.ee/therapyreimagined Modern Therapist's Survival Guide Creative Credits: Voice Over by DW McCann https://www.facebook.com/McCannDW/ Music by Crystal Grooms Mangano https://groomsymusic.com/

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2016 4:00

“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” One of Shakespeare’s scariest lines comes from what is easily his scariest play, ‘Macbeth,’ a show so frightening most theater people refuse to speak the title aloud. In the third season of Shakespeare in the Cannery—in the old cannery ruins near Railroad Square—director David Lear unleashes an offbeat, seriously gonzo take on the Bard’s bloody masterpiece, blending modern jeans, combat boots, and bike leather with traditional elements like capes, cackling witches, blood drenched swords … and a head in a bloody bag—which never gets old. Overall, Lear’s vision is impressive. He springs masks, trapdoors, and a whole toolbox of other theatrical tricks, including the incorporation of drummers from Sonoma County Taiko, pounding out a live percussive score throughout the show. Shakespeare’s eerie supernatural tragedy tells the twisty-gory tale of the highly suggestible Scottish warrior Macbeth, played by Ben Stowe, who emphasizes the reluctance and fear beneath his character’s fighting façade. At Macbeth’s side, sort of, is his blindly ambitious wife, whom Shakespeare never gave a name to. She is always only ‘Lady Macbeth,’ played here with cruel coolness by Ilana Niernberger. Mr. and Mrs. M are goaded into traitorous action by the riddle-spouting Weird Sisters—you know, the ‘bubble, bubble, toil and trouble twins— who tell Macbeth he will become king. Anyone else might sit around and wait for the crown to fall in their laps, but Lady M. wants that crown, and Duncan, the king, just invited himself over for dinner so . . . why waste an opportunity? Screwing their courage to the sticking place—a line that here takes on a seriously sexy second meaning—the married first-time murderers argue a bit before finally offing Duncan, quickly shifting blame to his sons, and then taking his throne as king and queen. That would be a terrible end to the story. But fortunately for the audience, Macbeth—not to mention Shakespeare—just can’t seem to stop killing people, and the whole kill-the-king-and-then-retire-from-evil-deeds scheme soon collapses under of storm of mystery, madness and mayhem. On a pleasingly playground-like stage, the performances sometimes stray toward the big, and over-acted. That’s not necessarily a bad choice for an outdoor show. But in this case, what’s gained in terms of clarity and size is often lost in terms of subtlety and absorbing emotion. That’s a problem enhanced by a number of freaky visual ideas that—while interesting and certainly not boring—often distract from the drama rather than heighten it. Still, there are some very strong moments in this ‘Macbeth,’ fueled by several effectively surprising acting choices. As Duncan, the doomed King, Clark Miller very convincingly plays the monarch’s essential sweetness. Eric Thompson, as a servant in Macbeth’s castle, is hilarious, making the most of the play’s one comedic scene. Sam Coughlin, as Duncan’s vengeful son, is impressively complex in a very small part. And as Macbeth’s fellow warrior Banquo, Alan Kaplan brings a sense of affronted decency and a solid soldiers’ bearing to a role usually played by a much younger man. Though perhaps lacking in actual human drama and emotion, playing more like a Halloween pageant than an actual tragedy, this particular ‘Macbeth’ is probably an excellent production to introduce kids to Shakespeare with. Energetic and ambitious—like poor befuddled Macbeth himself—the show may sometimes stumble … but it definitely brings the sound and fury. ‘’Macbeth’ runs Friday & Saturday through July 23 at The Cannery. Invisibility. It’s not just something that happens in fantasy books and science fiction movies. In the real world, there are invisible people, folks who, because of their social status or lifestyle, or just because they keep their secret pains and problems to themselves, remain essentially unseen, unnoticed, unappreciated, unprotected—invisible. In two highly recommended North Bay plays, we are invited inside the lives of people who—in theater, as in real life—are rarely ever given a voice. In a near-balletic new production at Marin Theater Company, in Mill Valley, ‘My Mañana Comes’ follows four hard-working “busboys” at an upscale restaurant in New York City. The play is set entirely on the prep side of the bustling kitchen. We never see a single wait-person, and only the occasional hand and arm sliding dishes into view from the chef’s side. It’s a brilliantly detailed, realistic and lived-in set, by Sean Fanning, is like a character unto itself. Irwin’s brilliant script pulls us in immediately, and director Kirsten Brandt keeps things hopping as a quartet of actors bus dishes, prep plates of food, slice fruit and vegetables—using real knives—and rush in and out of swinging doors, with a grace and energy that would be impressive even if the actors weren’t also giving deep, fleshed out, fully engaging performances. Peter—played by Shaun Patrick Tubbs—and Jorge—Eric Avilés—have worked in the restaurant the longest, and each one tries in their own way to school the two newer bussers: Whalid—Caleb Carera— and Pepe—Carlos Jose Gonzales Morales. A bit of competition is natural, but when the restaurant’s management cuts the busser’s pay, everything changes. It’s here that the play kicks into high gear, showing us the way that privilege bring power, even amongst those who are living paycheck to paycheck, and in a hidden world where undocumented workers make up a huge part of the work force, it’s possible to lose everything—job, money, and the American dream—in an instant. In Sharr White’s The Other Place, now playing at Main Stage West, following an earlier run with much of the same cast at 6th Street Playhouse, Jacquelyn Wells steps into the lead, and gives a heartbreaking, emotionally scorching performance as Julianna, a brilliant scientist and expert on a rare form of dementia, who refuses to accept she’s showing signs of the same devastating illness. Deftly directed by David Lear—who keeps clear the playwright’s various flashbacks and narrative asides—the play unfolds as a bit of mystery, as Julianna recounts an event involving a girl in a yellow string bikini who appears in the audience during a lecture on brain function. There are other mysteries to be revealed in the lives of Julianna and her baffled husband Ian as well, all adding up to a show that is part family drama and part mediation on the meaning of memory. There is nice work by actor Clark Miller as Ian, with skillful performances from Angella Martin and John Browning in multiple roles. Sam Coughlin takes over for Browning in the show’s final week, and the show deserves an audience as it wraps up its run. Ultimately, Though heartbreaking and challenging, The Other Place finds a surprisingly sweet and lovely resolution, a reminder that the ones we have loved and lost are more than mere memories—they are what we have when nothing else is left. 'The Other Place’ runs Thursday–Sunday through November 15 at Main Stage West. www.mainstagewest.com ‘My Mañana Comes’ runs Tuesday–Sunday through November 22 at Marin Theatre Company. www.marintheatre.org

"Twelfth Night" is amongst Shakespeare’s most popular plays, in part because the story is so accessible, and the situations so universally funny. Typical of the Bard, humor and tragedy are never far from each other. A young woman, Viola, grieves for her twin brother Sebastian after surviving a shipwreck in which she believes he drowned. Cast ashore in a strange country, she disguises herself as a man, donning an outfit matching that of her brother, who soon shows up - surprise! - wearing the same thing. They are now identical. Viola, having taken the name Cesario, finds employment with the local Duke, whom she instantly falls for. The Duke’s in love with the wealthy Olivia, who’s mourning her own brother’s recent death, and swears she will never love any man, but changes her mind the first time she takes a look at Cesario, who of course is actually Viola. Wacky subplots involve of Olivia’s drunken cousin Toby Belch and the clueless Sir Aguecheek, Olivia’s servants Maria and the self-righteous Malvolio, and a freelance jester-singer-trouble-maker named Feste - all of whose paths begin to cross Cesario’s in increasingly complicated, potentially life-threatening ways. Meanwhile, believing his sister to have drowned, Sebatian can’t understand why everyone in this strange land seems to know him, some trying to kill him and others trying to take him to bed. It’s great stuff, all served up with Shakespeare’s patented sense of poetry and escalating crisis. What’s tricky about a play so well known and well loved is presenting it freshly. How do you bring something new to a show so thoroughly mined and milked that virtually everything findable in it has been found? That’s the task set before director David Lear and the Shakespeare in the Cannery crew, the relatively new company that last weekend opened its sophomore season in the old cannery ruins in Railroad Square. With a uniformly talented cast, and a strong vision by Lear, this production manages to both hit the notes we love to hear in a staging of "Twelfth Night," and somehow find a few more I, for one, have yet to have heard. Without altering the text, Lear has found a way to balance the play’s extremes, making the comedy funnier by attending to the details of the drama. Certainly, Lear - known for his innovations and sometimes unconventional approaches - does make a few changes, the most obvious being Feste the Jester, who here has been split into TWO, played as twins or clones or BFFs by Haley Bartels and Brandon Wilson, both delightful. The other obvious splashes of invention are largely stylistic, from the tennis shoes worn by most of the cast to the black lipstick and corsets worn by several of the supporting ensemble. As Viola and Sebastian, Kot Takahashi and Carmen Mitchell are not just wonderful at making you care about their plights, they look a lot more like each other than in most productions of "Twelfth Night" I’ve seen. I don’t have time to mention everyone by name, but special mention must go to April Krautner’s Olivia, arcing from gloom to puppy love with immense charm, Clark Miller and Brian Abbott as Toby and Aguecheek - managing to be silly and kind of sad at once - and the magnificent Alan Kaplan in the play’s trickiest role, that of Malvolio, who as the subject of one of literature’s most famous practical jokes, must transform from ridiculous to near-tragic, without altering the tone of the shenanigans all around him. Congratulations to Lear and his entire team. By finding the new in something so old, this is a Twelfth Night to celebrate and savor. Twelfth Night runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm through August 15.
