Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Link to Petition to Mandate Continued Medicare Coverage for Rural Home Telehealth Visits Beyond 2024 Guidelines for Alcohol Consumption Vary Markedly by Country Show Notes: Dr. Karin Cesario, a hepatologist (liver specialist), delves into the significant health risks associated with alcohol consumption, particularly highlighting the heightened dangers during the holiday season. Her discussion underscores the absence of a safe alcohol intake level and links alcohol to serious health issues, including cancer, liver disease, and heart conditions. Key Points: Health Risks of Alcohol: Alcohol is classified as a group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Even moderate drinking, previously considered acceptable, is now questioned. Healthy lifestyle choices, like a balanced diet and exercise, are encouraged over alcohol consumption. Cultural and Physiological Factors: Differences in cultural consumption patterns and definitions of drinking levels are explored. The interplay of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and specific surgeries (e.g., Roux-en-Y gastric bypass) with liver disease is discussed. Women and those with certain health conditions are at increased risk of liver damage. Alcohol-Related Health Crisis: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated alcohol consumption, leading to more alcohol-related deaths and liver transplants. Alcohol's role as a carcinogen is underreported compared to other substances like opioids. Need for Awareness and Intervention: Emphasis on greater awareness through higher taxes, better education, and screening for alcohol use disorders. Healthcare providers are urged to promote early intervention and responsible consumption. Treatment and Recovery: The potential for liver recovery through alcohol cessation is highlighted. Success stories of patients overcoming addiction underscore the importance of individualized counseling and supportive environments. Limited pharmacological treatments make therapy and rehabilitation crucial, focusing on self-motivation and addressing underlying mental health issues. Familial and Personal Influences: Family history of alcoholism does not predetermine one's future; abstaining is achievable. Personality traits and environmental factors influence risk of addiction. Conclusion: The discussion underscores the profound impact of alcohol on health and the importance of increasing awareness and resources for support and recovery. Dr. Cesario's insights aim to inform and encourage responsible choices, early intervention, and the pursuit of healthier lifestyles.

The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com: voicesoftoday.net/12n Twelfth Night By William Shakespeare Presented by Voices of Today As the generating force of its plot Twelfth Night uses a device which has since become a staple in comedy: gender confusion. Viola and her twin brother Sebastian, are shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria, a country ruled by the melancholy Duke Orsino. The twins are separated and Viola is led to believe that her brother has perished. She disguises herself as a male under the name of Cesario and makes her way to the ducal court, where Orsino employs her as a messenger, to communicate his love to the reclusive lady Olivia, who is not willing to return his affection. Olivia is also the target of two other romantic schemes. Her pompous steward, Malvolio, has persuaded himself that Olivia has fallen for him but is too diffident to reveal her passion. Her dissipated uncle, Sir Toby Belch, has plans to set up a match for her with Sir Andrew Aguecheek, a feeble-minded squire. Viola/Cesario falls in love with Orsino and Olivia with Cesario, but all of the parties are obliged to hide their feelings. Having survived the shipwreck, Sebastian now appears on the scene and contracts a secret marriage with Olivia, who believes him to be Cesario. In the final act, Viola reveals her true identity and is accepted as a spouse by Orsino. Featuring Emma Faye as Viola, Kendra Murray as Olivia, Cate Barratt as Sir Toby Belch, Alan Weyman as Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Lillian Rachel as Malvolio, Marty Krz as Feste and Laura Richcreek as Orsino. Also featuring the voices of Claudia Anglade, Linda Barrans, P J Morgan, Denis Daly and John Burlinson.

Following the growth of our past guests and seeing their success has been a truly inspirational experience, and checking in with Julie Sullivan and Carolyn Cesario, co-founders of Ground Up, is another uplifting show. Our last interview was show number 19 which was released January 22nd, 2020 and for your background, Ground Up is a company that delivers peanut-free nut butters in amazing flavors. The company began in 2016 when Julie returned from Uganda where she had been overseeing an employment training program for women overcoming poverty. Back in her hometown of Portland, Oregon, she soon recognized the need for a similar program at home. However, she needed a product and a company as a base for the training programs. Coincidently, Carolyn had been perfecting sugar-free, peanut-free nut butter recipes due to dietary constraints and when the two met, it was destiny. They took a unique angle at their business model, calling themselves a “not-only-for-profit” business. They partner with local nonprofits (currently 30-40) to employ womxn overcoming adversity who have the motivation but need the opportunity to get back into the workforce. The company does NOT do background checks on the applicants as they believe in second chances and anyone coming forward with a good attitude receives that chance. By working in Ground Up, womxn get job training in a 6-9 month program and are part of a team selling healthy and delicious nut butters to the public. Great place to start, but what has happened in the last three-plus years? Julie and Carolyn have expanded the product line and part of the expansion is to produce seasonal flavors, often highlighting their vendor partners. At the time of this show, Funfetti is the highlighted product. They partnered with Mia Swinehart of Gathered Nutrition, a treasure trove of nutritious and delicious recipes. Mia loves funfetti cake and also has an obsession to add almond extract to baked treats. She has always had a “dream” nut butter and now has gotten to live that dream with Ground Up. This almond and cashew butter tastes just like cake batter (but of course, healthier). It's made from a blend of almonds and cashews, then blended with cacao butter and almond extract, and finally, finished with swirls of honey, cacao nibs, and plant-based sprinkles from some of Ground Up's other vendor friends. And definitely follow the company for their upcoming fall release, which they are coyly keeping under wraps as of this show. The company has always done 100% of its manufacturing. That in-house passion means superb quality control, but also comes with challenges. Especially for the Ground Up concept, where Julie and Carolyn are marrying a job training program with manufacturing a consumer food product and there is a myriad of regulations and health requirements. Specifically, they have faced big problems with their squeeze pack machine. The squeeze packs were originally created so people could sample the product without having to open a whole jar. So they were perfect for events such as trade shows and other marketing opportunities and people have loved them. However, the blankety-blank machine that makes them is most temperamental and it's taken roughly two years of trouble-shooting to get the hiccups down to a reasonable frequency. A huge change since the last show has been the explosion of distribution. You can now find Ground Up Nut Butters in grocery stores in the pacific northwest. And a recent deal with Target means you can find the Nut Butters in many locations on the west coast. As in the beginning, you can buy online at: https://grounduppdx.com/. Twelfth Night, named for the celebration that is both the culmination and the close of the Christmas festivities, is a bittersweet romantic comedy at once melancholy and merry.
