Our culture teaches that when someone is struggling with substance use, the correct response is tough love. It's better to let them hit rock bottom than to enable their behavior. My guest today is Heather Ross, host of the Living While Loving Your Child Through Addiction podcast. She's also a dear personal friend. We're letting you eavesdrop on one of the many raw conversations we've had about the devastating impact the “tough love” mindset has on both the giver and the receiver. And why compassion is not the same as enabling. You'll hear Heather's first-hand account of what happened when she shifted her goal from controlling the situation to connecting with her daughter. Her story is both heartbreaking and inspiring, because despite losing her daughter to a fentanyl overdose, she will never regret that she was a safe place for her daughter–and a source of unconditional love. Buckle up, because this one's a tear jerker. But whether you're a parent, partner or just wondering how to show up for someone you love, you'll walk away with a clear understanding of how to release fear, find your ground and support your person without losing yourself. “You can't sit motionless for 30 minutes without learning something, and when that happens day after day, we learn and we learn. Like it or not, we learn.” - Heather Ross Heather opens up the Pandora's Box of zazen and takes a hard and healing look at the hidden aspects of ourselves that inevitably unhide themselves through regular sitting. How do we cope when we start to see through our own coping mechanisms? What do we do in the messy middle when we start seeing our mistakes all too clearly, but before we've learned how not to make them? How are we supposed take personal responsibility for the faults of others without making it all about us??

In Ep 123 we put forward some questions that Brené Brown offered us that I had to research. She called it Wholehearted adult play. And I was really struck by this: Play? Do I play? Do I play enough? What is play anyway? I was kind of terrified I wasn't fun or playing in my life! So I found there's an actual National Institute for Play (NIFP) which is a non-profit public benefit corporation dedicated to advancing society's understanding and application of play — a long-ignored biological capability that can lead to healthier, happier lives. I also think that the best bosses I ever had were very playful. One of them was so good at it, she did a side gig as a stand-up comic and was quite good! Corporate life gave her lots of great material. Today on the podcast I speak with Coach, Heather Ross. I know you will enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed creating it for you. Please find Heather at: https://heatherrosscoaching.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heatherrosscoaching/ FaceBook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/434135437166166/?ref=share Heather Ross is the mother of a child who struggled with addiction, a Certified Parent Support Coach, Invitation to Change Certified, CRAFT trained, and the host of the popular podcast called Living with Your Child's Addiction. Heather tried all the approaches the professionals recommended even though they didn't feel right to her. She tried tough love, waiting for her daughter to hit rock bottom, and other traditional approaches that are confrontational and based on stigma rather than science. Those approaches caused chaos in her home, intense stress for the whole family, and destroyed her relationship with her daughter. Feeling desperate and defeated, Heather stopped everything that wasn't working and tried something completely different. The new approaches that she learned from coaching and CRAFT empowered her to support her daughter based on her values as a mother. She brought unconditional love, stability, and emotional health to her relationship with her daughter. Heather educated herself about substance use disorder, started focusing on self-care, learned how to set boundaries and allow natural consequences, and started using positive communication skills. The changes she made not only repaired but strengthened her relationship with her daughter. It also created space for her daughter to seek treatment and start her own recovery journey. The recovery path is not a straight line though. It can be filled with many challenging twists and turns. Tragically, Heather's daughter had a reoccurrence of use and was given a deadly dose of fentanyl. After the devastating loss of her daughter, Heather called on her tools and resilience to lean into helping more parents and using science-backed education to change the stigma around substance use. She's grateful that she worked hard on herself, learned how to support her daughter, and created a beautiful loving relationship with her. Heather has a 1:1 coaching program for parents that is family centered, based on science, and works during recovery or active substance use. She believes that parents have more power than they realize and the best gift they can give their child is a healthy parent.

“I've had the experience of sitting zazen and just watching the dust bunnies blow around and thinking ‘this is great…' It feels ordinary, and exciting, because only good can can come out of that sense of boring - showing up and hanging out without a lot of expectations.” - Heather Ross In our ongoing series where brave sangha members bring us the story of what they're doing and why they're here, Heather takes the hot seat to tell us all about ambition and being special, wanting to be special, the beauty of boredom, and the quest for the coolest Zen center that led (for better or for worse) to us, the most avowedly disappointing place in LA. What makes some people stick around for a practice predicated on disappointment, when the normal reaction would be to go find the fun? Is the pursuit of special the dominant religion in our culture? What exactly is the beauty of boredom?? Find out here!

In this week's Safe Home Podcast, Beth talks with Nicole Miller, a certified drug and alcohol counselor and coach from Oregon who teaches addiction pharmacology at Portland Community College. Even though she's very knowledgeable about all kinds of drugs, I brought her onto Safe Home Podcast to help us focus on fentanyl. It's such a dangerous drug, and deaths from fentanyl poisoning have skyrocketed in just the last 2 or 3 years. Our family really wants to raise awareness about fentanyl, so Nicole will help us all understand the risks and what we can all do to prevent deaths caused by fentanyl. This episode is dedicated to the memory of Helanna Johnson, our life coach Heather Ross's daughter who died in December 2021 from fentanyl poisoning. ===============

Heather's daughter struggled with substance addiction and at first Heather couldn't navigate how to support her but she realisation that healing, for both herself and her daughter, had to start with love. Now she's advocating that we can all love on a whole new level. Be Inspired xo
It is in Jessica's heart and vision for this podcast to spend more time shedding light on today's topic of mental health, addiction and shame. Having a sick kid and having a kid struggling with addiction are both hard on families but one carries a lot of extra societal judgment. Both families need and deserve community, understanding and support though the shame associated with addiction can drive some parents into isolation. Today Jessica interviews Heather Ross, a mother who was willing to do whatever it took to have a relationship with her daughter who struggled with addiction. Supporting her daughter taught her to focus on their similarities instead of their differences, be present as a mother, and love her daughter unconditionally for the 21 short years she had on this earth. After her daughter lost her life to fentanyl poisoning last year, Heather became even more dedicated to helping families heal. Her clients call her an expert at teaching them how to create peace of mind, space for change, and loving connection in their families. In addition to being a parent support coach Heather has over 20 years of experience in the recovery community, hosts the Living With Addiction Podcast, is a peer parent with the online parent support community Other Parents Like Me, and a CRAFT practitioner. This week's episode is very special because #1 Joey is with us for this one. And #2: It's going to be a 3-way conversation with me, Joey, and our life coach Heather Ross. If you've listened to any of our episodes, you've probably heard me mention her, or you might have heard one of her 2 episodes we've already published - #10 and #34. In this Safe Home episode, we will be talking about how the CRAFT method has helped our family, and you'll hear from both sides - the parents' side and the teen's side. CRAFT is an acronym that stands for Community Reinforcement and Family Training. This is the approach that is scientifically proven to get more people into recovery than the old-fashioned approaches like tough love and interventions. The basis of CRAFT is the positive rewards that the loved one heaps on the addicted person when they are doing favorable behaviors. A key concept in CRAFT is that the relationship is more important than their sobriety. This method shifted our family so much that I credit it to keeping our son alive for these past few years. I'm very excited to share some details of the CRAFT approach with you. =============== RESOURCES: Heather's information: Website: HeatherRossCoaching.com Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/living-with-your-childs-addiction/id1543141299 Other resources mentioned in this episode: Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change: https://motivationandchange.com/family-services/resources-for-families/ The CRAFT Approach: https://drugfree.org/article/craft-approach-encouraging-healthy-constructive-positive-changes-family/ Never Use Alone: https://neverusealone.com/ or 800-484-3731 How to get free Narcan: https://www.goodrx.com/naloxone/narcan-naloxone-at-home-free Safe Home is created by Joseph Nakao and Beth Syverson Music written and performed by Joseph Nakao Cover art by Joseph Nakao, photo by Beth Syverson www.SafeHomeFamilies.com TIME STAMPS: 3:30 Overview of Joey's struggles 6:40 Joey's new job has helped stabilize him 7:40 Alternative healing we've found to be helpful 11:32 How Heather and CRAFT helped save our family 16:24 Putting our kids under the microscope 19:29 Addiction causes hiding and masking 21:20 Changing the conversation with our addicted loved one 23:28 What Joey and Helanna received from substances 27:04 The goal is CONNECTION, not sobriety 33:25 Why some parents have trouble with the CRAFT Method 36:30 Sliding through life pre-crisis, asleep at the wheel 39:08 What our kids want from us 41:16 Enabling, Narcan, “rock bottom,” and stigma --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/safe-home-podcast/message

In this episode I speak to Heather Ross who is a mother who was willing to do whatever it took to have a relationship with her daughter who struggled with addiction. Whatever it took turned out to be a gift for her. In addition to being a parent support coach Heather has over 20 years of experience in the recovery community, hosts the Living With Addiction Podcast, and is a CRAFT practitioner. In this week's Safe Home Podcast, Beth talks with Pam Lanhart. She's the Director of the Minnesota based non-profit organization “Thrive Family Recovery Resources” that she started in 2016 to help families with addicted loved ones. She's a certified recovery coach, peer specialist, speaker, author, and advocate for those dealing with substance use disorder - and their families.. She has a book and a FB page called “Praying Our Loved One Home” that our Christian audience members will especially love. She recently lost her young adult son Jake to the disease of addiction, but like our dear friend Heather Ross, she is forging ahead, more determined than ever to help families so they can help their struggling teens and young adults who are battling with addiction. Pam subscribes, as I do, to the CRAFT approach of treating our addicted loved ones with unconditional love and positive regard, no matter where they are in their sobriety. In this week's Safe Home Podcast, Beth talks with Yvette Harpootian, a certified life coach from Rhode Island who is passionate about helping women get out of overwhelm, get more done, and release anxiety and self-sacrifice in order to feel better. I thought her message would be welcome here on Safe Home Podcast since many in our audience are parents of adolescents. I know when Joey was in crisis mode, I almost completely lost myself for a while there, before I got connected with Heather Ross, OUR life coach, who BTW went to the same coaching school as Yvette. In this episode, you will receive practical tools from Yvette that you can put into practice right away. ===============

We wrap up the topic of CLARITY with a tool I learned from an amazing coach, Heather Ross of the Living with Addiction podcast. It is a simple framework for deciding what we want to keep doing, being, or having, and what we want to stop doing, being, or having, and what we want to start doing, being, or having to create the life we desire most. It elegantly points out what we have accomplished and opens us up to choose with intention for the future. I hope you try this one out in your journal. You may be surprised at the clarity it brings for you.

Del Close was an early member of the Compass Player (later Second City), an early proponent of “Yes, and” improv method, the “Harold” longform improv format, and an unironic “guru” of almost every major comedy player who came out of Chicago into Saturday Night Live into your favorite comedies of the last 40 years. Yet, why isn't he known to many, or all, and why do those who did knew him personally describe him as a “madman”? On this episode is Heather Ross, director and co-writer of the new Close documentary For Madmen Only, along with her co-producer and -editor George Mandl, and former Chicago improv student Dustin Levell. We discuss: - How Ross's doc work with women in Chicago kept her hearing stories about this “Close guy with a needle hanging out of his arm” who trained all her favorite comedians; - the closest Close had to an autobiography, the late-'80s pre-Vertigo comic Wasteland, and how its visual narrative contributed to the doc; - his degree of shock-seeking and self-mythologizing; - and why Chicago improvers from Mike Myers to Bill Murray have wanted to make a biopic out of Close's life; Also: - The difference between the ‘60s San Franciscan Harold versus the “Teaching” Harold; - the influence of the book Close's tri-authored book "Truth in Comedy" and its profound wisdom, both personally and artistically; - the ambivalent nature of being a great “guru” and having one's students surpass in levels of fame; - and why the 4-20% of genuine good improv is ephemerally like the being around your funniest friends at the lunch table in high school — you had to be there, and it can never be recreated. Heather Ross is an Emmy-Ward winning documentarian for her film "Girls on the the Wall," along with producing on the genealogy series "Who Do You Think You Are." She also directed several shorts in the “It Gets Better” series of advocacy films. George Mandl is a film editor based out of Los Angeles. He and his work can be found at his website. https://www.georgemandl.com Dustin Levell is a Chicago-based comedy writer, performer, and stage director who trained at Second City and Improv Olympic. "For Madmen Only: The Stories of Del Close" is currently available to rent or buy on VOD. And, also, on Kanopy. https://www.kanopy.com/product/madmen-only

Welcome to this week's episode of the StephUp Podcast! Thank you for your support and for coming back each week to listen. This episode features special guest Heather Ross of Heather Ross Coaching.Steph and Heather begin their conversation by talking about Heather's background. She is a life coach who mainly works with parents who have children struggling with addiction. She got into this field because she has a daughter who struggles with addiction. Before life coaching, Heather was unsure of how to help and manage her daughter's addiction and do what she felt what right for her. She felt like she was doing everything wrong and just suffering in silence. After finally figuring out what worked for her as a mother and what worked best for her daughter, she felt compelled to share this information with others. “I felt that although I may not be able to help my daughter, I could help other kids by helping their parents.”Heather initially thought that by being a perfect parent, she could prevent her daughter from being anything but successful (and she always was a good kid), but when addiction took over, Heather blamed herself. And this is how a lot of parents feel. A lot of time is spent trying to figure out what went wrong, which means there is no focus on the solution. Heather was finally able to bridge the gap between her and her daughter when she accepted that she had done the best job she could as a parent. Heather committed to learning as much about addiction as possible and having a good relationship with her daughter, no matter what stage of addiction or recovery she was in. Heather also realized that the more she open she was with others about what she was going through with her daughter, the more help and support she received, which really helped her heal.Steph and Heather talk about how there are other kinds of addictions besides drugs, such as food and television (which seem to be more acceptable) but regardless, there is still something deep inside us we are searching for which fuels this addiction. We can be very judgmental of other's addictions without realizing we have one ourselves. We need to stop focusing so much on the addiction and more on what the addiction is trying to show us.Over the years, certain kinds of addictions have increased, such as opioid addition, which is what her daughter struggled with. In Canada, marijuana is legal, but Heather doesn't necessarily feel that it will lead to a more serious addiction, any more than alcohol can. It just depends on the person and where they are in their life. Some people can handle substances and others can't. Steph talks about how when she was in high school in the 90's, things like anxiety and depression weren't as openly discussed as they are today. But kids in the 90's didn't have the same struggles and experiences, like with social media for example. Heather thinks that societal pressures today can negatively impact and fuel addictions in kids. Documentary filmmaker Heather Ross , whose new project For Madmen Only: The Stories Of Del Close is newly available on VOD, celebrates Christopher Guest's 1996 feature Waiting For Guffman -- in which the actor and filmmaker recruited Fred Willard, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Parker Posey, Bob Balaban and another half-dozen very funny people to make up a story about some amateur theater performers celebrating the sesquicentennial of a small Missouri town. And once you've listened to this episode, you might want to check out Andy Kindler on Guest's earlier comedy The Big Picture.

Chances are addiction has touched your life in some way. A parent, a sibling, a friend, maybe even yourself. But when your child is struggling with addiction, what do you do? Many of us would want to help in any possible way we can, but we may be too close emotionally to know the best ways to do just that. Heather Ross is a certified life coach who works with parents that have a child struggling with addiction. She became a coach because she felt there weren't enough resources while dealing with her own daughter's addiction. She empowers parents to choose themselves and their happiness the way they want their addicted children to choose sobriety.
