When Dennis Nyback died in 2022, the Portland film archivist and programmer had amassed a collection of thousands of reels of films, whether they were black and white cartoons, 1960s-era commercials or educational films shown in classrooms. Nyback would share his eclectic finds through curated screenings at independent movie theaters not only in Portland, but also across the U.S. and Europe. As reported by Oregon ArtsWatch, Nyback’s friends and fellow cinephiles faced a daunting challenge after his death to track down and sort through the thousands of mostly 16mm reels of film he left behind. That effort evolved into The Nyback Archive, with a group of volunteers working to catalogue Nyback’s collection and eventually make it available for public viewing and study. The team leading this effort began sharing some of the gems they’ve found through monthly theater screenings, like the “16mm Nyback Showdown” between dueling projectionists on May 6 at the Clinton Street Theater. Joining us to talk about the value of preserving analog film in our digital age are Greg Hamilton, a film curator and co-founder of The Nyback Archive, and filmmakers and curators Ioana Cherascu and Garrett Schroeder. Hamilton organizes screenings of films from the archive through his Psychotron Afterschool Special series, while Cherascu and Schroeder curate films from the archive and other acquisitions through their Astral Projections series shown in Portland and beyond.
I'm not breaking news by saying that seduction often factors into vampire movies. But has it ever been done better than by Chris Sarandon in "Fright Night" (1985)? This horror-comedy toys with suburban paranoia by casting the vampire as the debonair stranger next door and drinking in his charisma "from toe to tip," as returning champion Susan Tomorrow puts it. So happy to have Susan, a programmer at Portland's Clinton Street Theater, back on the show to talk Roddy McDowall, how "Fright Night" effectively references older vampire films, and, oh yeah, Chris Sarandon's neckline. Follow Susan at @kingvidiot on Instagram and pick your next night out at Clinton Street here: https://cstpdx.com/
Scott started the LIFERS movie tour last week in St. Louis at the Arkadin Cinema & Bar — and this episode finds him in his hotel after a particularly long day that took him from a showing in Portland, Oregon at the Clinton Street Theater to a showing at the Clairidge Theater in Montclair, New Jersey. The dude was a little rough. (AND there was a fucking Tesla involved!) PLUS!: Micro-cinemas, cat-pigs, Enuff Z'nuff at The Whiskey, The Lumiere in L.A., Gabe's face in IMAX at the Esquire in Sacramento, cineastes, Ryan's nipples, Married Men at the Metro on March 15, the fall Everclear tour, ripping off Amadeus, English accents, and the royal “we” game. (Not discussed, but definitely felt — The Coolidge in Boston and the Film Society Center in Philadelphia.) Remaining dates on the LIFERS movie tour: MARCH 19 — Oriental Theatre — Milwaukee, WI APRIL 6 — Wisconsin Film Festival — Madison, WI APRIL 7 — Screenland Armour — Kansas City, MO APRIL 8 — The Varsity Cinema — Des Moines, IA APRIL 9 — The Trylon — Minneapolis, MN
"If all great filmmakers would make a documentary about their lives right before they died, wouldn't that be so handy?" Couldn't put it better than Jennifer Jones does in this episode. She and Laura Glazer are the co-founders of the Agnes Varda Forever project, and they're here to talk about "Varda by Agnes" (2019), the final film from world cinema icon Agnes Varda. We dig into Varda's one-of-a-kind career, suggest starting points for newcomers, and assess what sets Varda's final film apart of the towering epics that seem to typify this series. Check out the Agnes Varda Forever website for free posters, cool merch, info on a forthcoming postcard project, and news of their return to Clinton Street Theater in March: AgnesVardaForever.com

“Like a kids' movie for adults,” Susan Tomorrow describes the joyful anarchy of "House II: The Second Story." For her Superior Sequel, the Clinton Street Theater programmer and co-owner nominates this 1987 horror-comedy where any dimension, genre, or plot U-turn is possible in the next room over. Zombie grandpas, crystal skulls, pterodactyls, Bill Maher—there truly is no telling where this one will go.
Last summer, Oregon made national headlines as timbers from the infamous Beeswax Wreck were discovered along the North Coast near Manzanita. The Beeswax Wreck, named for one of the products the ship carried, is said to be one of the inspirations for the beloved film, “The Goonies.” The wreck has also attracted the attention of treasure hunters in the past, searching for signs of its wreckage or anything it may have been carrying onboard. Now, a new documentary and podcast series shares the story behind one of those treasure hunters in its first episode. “The True Quest for Fabled Treasure on the Oregon Coast,” is episode one of the new series, “Secrets of the Mysteries.” The documentary will be screening Dec. 10 at the Clinton Street Theater. JB Fisher is the executive producer for the series. Tony Altamirano is the director. They both join us to share more on the supposed treasure lost along the Oregon Coast.
Clinton Street Theater in Southeast Portland has been around for over 100 years, making it one of the oldest continuously operating movie houses in the United States. A year ago it was bought by seven film fanatics, a group that included former employees and volunteers. Today we're talking with two of the new proprietors — Susan Tomorrow and Aaron Colter — to check how it's going as they come up on their one-year anniversary of running the historic theater. In the debut of a "Guest's Choice" format, Portland writer and film programmer Aaron Colter joins Chance to discuss a pair of '80s movies about New York vampires: "The Hunger" (1983) and "Vampire's Kiss" (1989). The former is Tony Scott's first movie (dark, entrancing, and with David Bowie), while the latter finds Nicolas Cage channeling Nosferatu to ends we still don't understand. Portlanders can see "The Hunger" at Clinton Street Theater on Thursday, Oct. 28 — https://cstpdx.com/schedule.
