This week we talk about “teachable moments” when teachers stop the usual lessons to talk about things happening in the world that matter to students. Show Notes, Episode 13: What Makes a Great APToday I'm joined by Brenda Byrd, an Assistant Superintendent for School Leadership (and a former South Carolina Elementary Principal of the Year and a National Distinguished Principal). Brenda works for Greenville County School District in Greenville South Carolina. Brenda is here with us to talk about what makes an AP great. Notable QuotesBrenda Byrd“Gone are the days where you are mandating new initiatives across the board. It needs to be few and far between when we take that approach. We really need to start looking for those teacher leaders, those early adopters, who may be interested in doing work like that, and let them help you work out the kinks and look for those success opportunities.” “You do have to have effective practices with operational and management to be able to transition more into that instructional leadership.” “I think time management is one of the most important skill sets that effective leaders need to have, and that is so true for assistant principals” “You really have to manage your time well because if you don't, then you are just in response mode all the time, you are just being reactive. You have to plan proactively to schedule your responsibilities. Start by scheduling the most important tasks because if you don't, if those are left as an afterthought, like classroom observations, they're not going to happen consistently” “Good intentions are just the beginning… you've gotta have develop systems to plan and execute your responsibilities” “A good portion of our job as administrators is responding to whatever the immediate needs are and we have to realize that those aren't interruptions, that's part of our job… and we have to be able to adapt and respond to those needs when appropriate.” “We need school leaders who model their own desire for professional learning” “Children who are willing to invest in them. Adults need people who genuinely care about them and who take the time to develop relationships.” “I was a principal at a large school, and I wanted to be sure that at some point during the year that at some point during the year that all of my staff members got a handwritten note. They didn't know it, but I kept a little checklist of that just so I could keep up with that and make sure that I had shared some love and appreciation with each person through a handwritten note.” “Assistant principals need to ask for what they need” “You cannot underestimate the power of the relationship… if we don't have relationships with students and the adults we serve, we can't do the work” Frederick“When we think about our pipelines and our gap between assistant principals and principals, it's that managing change and instructional leadership are two of the biggest pieces” “One of the things I see from assistant principals is that they are so eager to help everybody, that they overcommit and then they can't follow through” “Lots of people have good ideas. But who is willing to do the work?” “Positivity is “it's going great” when it's not, optimism is “We're going to get through this”” “the message to all assistant principals out there is: you're interviewing everyday.” “The best people in our business are still working on their craft and still trying to get better and they are taking risks to get better… every AP and principal out there should be willing to take some risks to continue to grow and improve their craft” Links:My email: frederick@frederickbuskey.com The Assistant Principal Podcast website: https://www.frederickbuskey.com/appodcast.html Sign up for the daily leadership email: https://mailchi.mp/c15c68e6df32/specialedition Website: www.frederickbuskey.comBlog: www.frederickbuskey.com/blog (reposts of the daily email)

Rhonda Rhodes is a National Distinguished Principal with Greenville County Schools in South Carolina. An experienced principal, she is in her first year at the Rudolph Gordon School in Simpsonville. RGS is a K-8 STEAM focused school. Dr. Rhodes works with four assistant principals, who are all relatively new to administration.  What are you celebrating: “As much as conflict and static is going on in our outside world I find peace just walking into classrooms and seeing teaching and hearing going on in just a normal environment.” How does the AP navigate sharing opinions but not being pushy: “Getting to know each other as individuals has been really important… I gathered insight [from teachers] and then we [admin] began having conversations. I cautioned them that each year is a new year.” “We did instructional look-fors and walkthroughs as a team.” “We assembled all that data (from asking teachers] compiled those and then created our priorities as an administrative team.” “I needed to understand their goals… an important part of the principalship is to build leaders” “We don't want to be the Assistant principal for busses, or the kindergarten first grade, or 7th-8th grade assistant principal… we are one school and the reality is…  when they take their next step, they are going to be the principal of a school, not a grade level or a task.” Advice for APs who want to grow their instructional leadership: “In our team meetings we have an operational side and an instructional side, and we begin with the instructional side... We can fulfill tasks, but we need to talk about the bigger things – instruction and teaching and learning for our students.” How APs can ask for opportunities to work on instructional leadership: “You say, ‘what are your expectations for me?' and then you share, ‘hey my career goals are this, how can you help me get there? What can I do to grow professionally? It benefits the school but also will gives me the experience to grow to the next level.” Tips for AP mistakes to not make: “Don't put tasks over people and don't put tasks over goals.” and “We always need to move forward. If we are taking a road trip, do we use our rearview mirror or do we use our windshield? …Anyone can get bogged down in how we did things here... Every school year, whether it is a new principal or not, brings new and unique challenges.” What are the signs that a new AP could be a great principal? “Being able to recognize good teaching and strategies. Knowing data - how does it match the teaching strategies that we see taking place, but also, I see those people with great communication skills, being able to relate to people, getting to know people and solve problems with people, not forthem. When you can bring them alongside you instead of to or for someone, we are growing people… being visible working with teachers and families and having that two-way communication.” Masks: “Modeling and leading by example. Being transparent. Not getting involved in the political side, just understanding the policies and procedures… Being mindful of what we can control… You have to know that policy, its not optional… show compassion for everyone.” “I used to be pretty fast in my decision making… but I have seen it is better to bring people alongside you because we aren't going to cram anything down anybody's throats. You have to be slow, intentional, and purposeful with all your decisions. One person doesn't have to be “the” leader… how fun is it to create solutions and opportunities… as a team” “Hold onto your why, this storm shall pass. Have your battle buddies with you.” FB“What a great question for an assistant principal to ask: ‘I want to grow, how can I grow in ways that will support you?'”  “We can make a quick decision but then we will struggle with implementation because others weren't a part of that [decision], but if we take time on a shared decision, that actually speeds things up.”

As soon as I walked on Stacie Kunihisa's campus I knew something different was happening. Two student ambassadors guided me on a tour of classrooms and project spaces, and spoke to me at length about how campus culture had changed as a result of a “movement” called Choose Love. Both felt that kids were related to each other in ways not seen before. Kanoelani Elementary is a carnival of interesting ideas and concepts in motion. I saw a full hydroponics garden next to one building, and heard about a series of “academy pathways” based on student inputs. Everywhere my ambassadors took me people seemed to be moving with great intent. Learning…is clearly front and center at this school. At the helm is a self-described “dreamer,” Principal Stacie Kunihisa, who grew up and went to school just down the road. In 2019 Stacie and Kanoelani Elementary hosted a Jessie Lewis Choose Love Movement conference on campus. Its 400 seats sold out in less than two weeks. Clearly there is a growing thirst for SEL training and ideas about how to grow more compassionate public, private and charter school cultures in Hawaiʻi. So what Stacie has to say about her journey, with her faculty, staff, students and parents, is important. She is a leader we can learn from. From Kanoelani's website we learn the school is an “innovative community of leaders, risk takers and warm-hearted citizens who empower the best in each other. We the community of Kanoelani, strive to: Foster the growth of developing the whole child: Collaborate to set and achieve goals: Provide a dynamic environment to maximize students' potential: Promote empathy and respect towards others.” Stacie was recently named 2019 Hawaiʻi National Distinguished Principal. She also received the $25,000 Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award, which annually recognizes outstanding public school principals in Hawaiʻi for their efforts to provide high-quality learning opportunities for their students.
