Welcome to the TWA Museum! The mission of the TWA Museum is to provide information to the public emphasizing the story, history and importance of the major role TWA played in pioneering commercial aviation. From the birth of airmail to the inception of passenger air travel, to the post-WWII era of global route expansion, TWA led the way for 75 years. The great influence that Trans World Airlines has had on MKC, and the City of Kansas City, Missouri, is one that history can never ignore. The TWA Museum's goal is to ensure a permanent, expanding and professionally exhibited collection of artifacts that bring the story of TWA to life here in Kansas City, where it all began. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the legacy of Trans World Airlines' leadership in the world of commercial aviation. Instrument Shop mechanic Tom Perry collected TWA items for many years and displayed them throughout the Trans World Airlines MCI Overhaul Base. TWA eventually donated a large space for Tom's collection near the employee cafeteria in the MCI Overhaul Base. The employees built a special case that exhibited his many items. The opening of the TWA Museum highlighted the pride that was – and still is – typical of virtually all former TWA employees and customers. Trans World Airlines was a major sponsor for the 1996 celebration of the Smithsonian's 150th Anniversary, and the TWA Museum's collection traveled to twelve cities over a period of two years as part of “America's Smithsonian” Exhibit. Over the years, with the closing of TWA's Kansas City Administration Center, the St. Louis Training Center and the Overhaul Base all museum items and displays came together at the Kansas City Expo Center. The TWA Museum became a Chapter of the Platte County Historical Society in 1985 and was under the direction of Marie Trainer. In 2010, Pam Blaschum took over the direction of the TWA Museum and, with Pat Brinkman, worked diligently to secure a space for the TWA Museum in the original building that was built in 1931 to accommodate the newly formed TWA corporate headquarters. Under the direction of Zana Allen, assisted by Karen Martin, the process of securing the Museum's own 501(c)3 status was completed in May 2013. In August 2013, the TWA Museum was granted its separate 501(c)3 status. A great big thank you to Tom Perry and the Perry Family, and the Platte County Historical Society and its Board, for preserving the history of TWA and protecting its artifacts. The memory of TWA has been assured a place in history through the TWA Museum at 10 Richards Road. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/loren-alberts/message

The brilliant, Paul Rushworth-Brown Author, managed to squeeze in one last author interview with historical fiction author, Karen Martin, at Book Fair Australia. Talking about her wonderful book, The Bringer Of Happiness. About Karen Martin: Karen is an independent award-winning Australian playwright, theatre director, and author living in regional Victoria, Australia. She ran away with the Women's Circus, created plays in prisons, and wrote theatre that strived for transformation. She won awards for her work, received funding to travel to write in situ, and learned to listen as the muses whispered in her ear. Dancing the Labyrinth is her debut novel in the thematic series Women Unveiled. Each novel can be read separately but are united by a distinctive feminine narrative exploring societal boundaries. The series blends Greek mythology, history, and imagination in the telling of (almost true) stories. This novel has its roots in Karen seeking answers as a mother as to how to raise a good son which eventually resulted in her fulfilling her lifelong dream to live on a Greek island for a year, where she was disciplined enough to write her first draft, despite the lure of the seaside location. We talk about synchronicity—how sometimes a book or a person or a place comes along at precisely the moment your spirit needs it, and how Karen came to embrace the indie route to publishing as the best vehicle to make her voice heard. Karen Martin has worked as an independent writer and director in theatre performance for over thirty years, and written and produced many notable theatre scripts as well as physical narratives for circus performance, touring nationally and internationally. She contributed to several non-fiction books: The Women's Circus: Leaping the Wire, and Women in Theatre: Ewa Czajor Memorial Award Recipients, and received a Local History Award for the writing and publication of two booklets on her award-winning production of The Women's Jail Project (TWJP:A History; TWJP: A Performance). I'm sad. I'm anxious. I react. I manage, or I don't. I can accept, deny, adapt. I suffer, I advocate, I overcome. Maybe it's my parent's health or my partner's or my child's. It's all engagement. I'm engaged in my health. A clinician engages in their patients' health.
On this episode, Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham talk to Dr. Karen Martin about the response and potential impacts of the Huntington Oil Spill that occurred off the coast of Southern California on October 1, 2021. So far, it seems that a a 17.7-mile oil pipeline connecting offshore oil Platform Elly with the shore had been possibly dragged by a ship's anchor resulting in an estimated 3,100 barrels of oil being spilled. Dr. Martin, a marine biology professor at Pepperdine University, has experience working in the aftermath of the 2015 Rufigio Oil Spill, which occurred just up the coast and was approximately the same size, with 2,500 barrels of oil being spilled. Discussed are the causes of oil spills, what happens to oil when it enters coastal environments, cleanup methods, and the long term impacts of oil in the environment.

This week, Steve Pereira will be challenged with the heuristic “Remove bias and duplication” from the Wardley Doctrine repository (https://wardleypedia.org/mediawiki/index.php/Doctrine_Patterns#Remove_bias_and_duplication). She is the author of many books including The Outstanding Organization and Clarity First. Today, we talk about Karen's "favorite mistake" of leaving a corporate job to go solo. Why was it a mistake to want the VP title so badly? Why did it seem like a mistake (to her or to others) for her to leave? We also have a great conversation about how to create a culture in a company where it's safe to talk about (and learn from) mistakes. In this episode, Steve joined Shahin to talk about Value Stream Mapping. For the first time, we had a live audience recording the episode. Peter, Ali, and Nasima from the audience asked questions from Steve by the end of the show. Topics We conversed about and around the following topics: Value Streams let you see the big picture and your biggest bottlenecks, risks, and opportunities. A value stream captures a view beyond common Agile and DevOps visibility to how we create and deliver value. A Value Stream Map lets to share that view with others and align on what to do next. A map should be simple to start (you can always add more data if you want) – avoid heavy/complex approaches. People are the most important part. Facilitation, handoffs, incentives, psychological safety are major factors. Karen Martin had well more than fifty-percent of her revenue tied up in one industry back in 2008. When the economy went into shock she did as well. Fortunately, she was a saver and she survived. Since then, she has written numerous books and her most recent reveals how smart leaders and organizations achieve outstanding results through clarity.
What does “strategic ambiguity” mean? Marketers, politicians, and others use it all the time. It’s the art of making a claim using language that avoids specifics. So, you can be purposefully vague to derive personal organizational benefit. On the other hand, it creates an environment at companies where employees try to avoid blame. Today, my guest is Karen Martin, president of TKMG and author of Clarity First. She describes how a pervasive lack of clarity strangles business performance and leadership on marketing teams. Some of the highlights of the show include: Definition of Clarity: State of something being easily and accurately understood; similar to transparency, but different from certainty Conveying and receiving information can cause ambiguity or clarity for employees and customers Primary reasons for lack of clarity all come down to fear Ramifications of lack of clarity: Takes time, builds frustration, and creates inefficiencies Five Ps for clarity: Purpose Priorities Process Performance Problem-solving Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Visual of the marketing team’s health Profit is not your purpose; profit is the outcome of delivering high value to customers, and purpose is to solve a customer’s problem Are you a clarity avoider, pursuer, or blind? Take Karen’s Clarity First Quiz Where to start to focus on clarity: What do you do? What do you really do? Why does that product, and not something else, to solve a problem? This week Martin, Ron and Karen examine self discipline and discuss how it has been abused in order for people to gain control over others. The original meaning of discipline refers to a student leaning, it has nothing to do with punishment, controlling others or enforcing rules of behavior. Nevertheless, we have turned the word discipline into a nasty unloving concept. We are all students exploring and learning about ourselves and life. It is that exploration and curiosity that needs to be freed. As an expression of love self discipline is each of us making our own self-conscious choices. Nonetheless, we know there are consequences to the choices we make. This is why it is important the choices we make move us to what we desire, come from the heart, and assist in creating our unique sovereign self.

Working with a personal fitness trainer has helped me see parallels to what I do with Lean... how my clients maybe see the world and things that I can do better as a coach, trainer, mentor, and consultant.I don't often get to be on the "coachee" side of the coaching equation. When I work with other consultants, like Karen Martin, that gives me a chance to get coached -- receiving positive feedback and being challenged to improve. When I've used a speaking coach, Kathryn Partan, it's very helpful because I try to improve and I see how somebody else approaches coaching and client work. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lean-blog-audio/support
