Our first look at "augments," or genetically engineered humans, came in the original Star Trek series episode "Space Seed", when we meet the unforgettable Khan and learn about the Eugenics Wars of Earth past. Gene Roddenberry based this backstory on events from our own history during World War II, when Hitler began examining selective birthing to create a superior race of humans. The United States was not blameless, with physicians and lawmakers using imperfections in family history or other "unwanted" characteristics to deny rights to many citizens. And so we come to Star Trek: Enterprise's entry in the history, the three episodes known as "The Augment Trilogy", heralding Brent Spiner's return to Star Trek as Soong family predecessor, Arik. So, we watched Stranger Things, and, as promised, we have a spoilerriffic conversation about it. Surprise, surprise, one of us didn't like it as much as everybody else. After that, we talk about Enterprise, which actually put together a pretty solid two-part story arc. Unfortunately, they used three episodes to tell it. Oops. We talk about "Borderland," "Cold Station 12," and "The Augments," and marvel at how much Brent Spiner classes up the joint just by showing up. Then, Mad Men gives everybody their own personal panic attacks, as Pete Campbell laments his plight, Pryce takes a shot to the head, Roger gets blindsided, and Don lets fear of exposure drive him to his "Hands and Knees."

The Augment Arc. The Eugenics Wars are one of those events from Star Trek history that we've learned very little about despite their extreme importance. During its fourth season, Enterprise revisited the Eugenics Wars and their aftermath in a three-part arc comprised of “Borderland,” “Cold Station 12,” and “The Augments.” In this episode of Warp Five hosts Christopher Jones and Kate Walsh discuss the trilogy, the brilliant performance by Brent Spiner as Dr. Arik Soong, how it plays into the great debate of genetic enhancement, why Malik is a poor man's Khan, and how the story excels in some areas while failing in others.

Soong's Augments. The Eugenics Wars are one of those elements from Star Trek history that we've learned very little about despite their extreme importance. This great conflict from the 1990s, triggered by genetic engineering, exerted great influence on the development of human society and the Federation. It brought us Khan, World War III, and the controversy behind Dr. Bashir's enhancement. During its fourth season, Enterprise revisited the Eugenics Wars and their aftermath in a three-part arc comprised of “Borderland,” “Cold Station 12,” and “The Augments.” Spanning the years from Khan's rule over Asia and the Middle East to Dr. Arik Soong's continuation of the genetic engineering experiment, this story fills in much of the unknown story.
