How can sociology reclaim its commitment to rigorous inquiry and viewpoint diversity? Today, John Tomasi sits with Jukka Savolainen, Ph.D., Sociology professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and the moderator of the Heterodox Academy's Sociology community. They discuss the discipline's current challenges, including ideological bias and lack of viewpoint diversity, and explore potential paths toward reform. Jukka shares his journey into sociology and his decision to leave Finland to pursue a PhD in the United States due to concerns about postmodernist influences in Finnish sociology. He addresses the core aims of sociology, its present state of fragmentation, and the impact of ideological bias on research and discourse. Jukka highlights the importance of empirical evidence and viewpoint diversity while pointing out taboos and restrictions on certain topics within the field. The conversation also examines the role of external interventions, using the example of the Danish government's restructuring of the sociology department at Copenhagen University in the 1980s, and the more recent actions by the state of Florida. Notes:Dr. Kemp initially moved to Spain and worked as an English teacher before deciding to go back to university to study a social science. He ended up choosing criminology due to the available classes in the morning. While in university, Dr. Kemp became interested in corporate crime and white-collar crime, but later specialized in cybercrime due to its potential for funding and career opportunities.Dr. Kemp discussed the challenges of studying in a different country and in a non-native language. He initially had limited Spanish proficiency but learned the language to a level where he could pursue a degree taught mainly in Spanish.Cybercrime is still significantly underreported, with organizations often weighing the incentives and reasons not to report, such as reputational damage and potential increases in insurance premiums.Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face difficulties in reporting cybercrimes due to the technical abilities and resources required. The reporting systems are not conducive to SMEs, and there is a need for assistance and support from states to streamline the reporting process for smaller organizations.Dr. Kemp emphasized the importance of distinguishing between reporting cybercrimes to police and criminal justice authorities versus reporting to cybersecurity providers. He noted that there seems to be more interest in private organizations reporting to other private organizations, possibly due to concerns about reputational damage.Dr. Kemp highlighted the limited access to data in Spain and Latin American countries, which hinders research in those regions. He mentioned the lack of a culture of evaluation and the absence of centralized data repositories. This limitation is problematic due to the questionable generalizability of research findings from other countries to Spain and Latin America.Dr. Kemp expressed the need for more longitudinal surveys to better understand the effectiveness of cybersecurity controls and tools. Cross-sectional surveys have limitations in establishing causal relationships and unraveling the timing of control implementation and incidents.Dr. Kemp discussed his upcoming book on cyber fraud, which aims to bring international literature on the topic of cybercrime to the Spanish-speaking world. He acknowledged the challenge of applying research findings from other countries to Spanish-speaking contexts, particularly concerning offender characteristics and prevention measures.Dr. Kemp mentioned his recent work on online victimization and older people, focusing on the impact of fear of crime and the digital divide. He emphasized the need to address older adults' concerns and promote their full participation in the digital society.About our guest:Dr Steven Kemphttps://www.udg.edu/ca/directori/pagina-personal?ID=2003705https://www.linkedin.com/in/steven-kemp-ed/Papers or resources mentioned in this episode:Kemp, S., Buil-Gil, D., Miró-Llinares, F., & Lord, N. We were fortunate to have two such interesting 'hands on' academics in this conversation. Within an academic climate that is not always sympathetic or collaborative they engaged in a three year research project in one of the most notorious penal establishments in the Uniteds States, Angola. Dr. Michael Hallett is a full Professor in the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at the University of North Florida. Dr. Hallett just finished his fourth book and has published research appearing in numerous additional books and journals including Punishment & Society, Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, Critical Criminology and others. Dr. Hallett's focus is Corrections & Social Inequality, Punishment & Society, and Religion & Crime. Dr. Hallett designed Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Pretrial Services Unit (drug treatment/diversion) and has completed extensive work with local organizations including Prisoners of Christ, Operation New Hope, Hubbard House, the City of Jacksonville, JCCI and others. Most recently, Dr. Hallett led a three-year study at America's largest maximum-security prison, "Angola" (aka Louisiana State Penitentiary) exploring the religious lives of long-term inmates. He has served as Principal Investigator on grants from the US Department of Justice, Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Jesse Ball DuPont Foundation, and several other organizations. Dr. Hallett has chaired two academic departments at UNF (Sociology, Anthropology & Criminal Justice and Criminology & Criminal Justice) after first directing the Graduate program in Criminal Justice. Dr. Hallett frequently works on local justice issues in Jacksonville and has completed over a dozen funded projects at UNF, often employing students in the research. Professor Dr. Frederick V. Engram Jr. talks about how he uses critical race theory to help make sense of the African American experience with racism within both the higher education and criminal justice systems. Dr. Frederick serves in the role of Assistant Professor of Instruction at the University of Texas-Arlington with a joint appointment in the Center for African American Studies (CAAS) and the Department of Criminology/Criminal Justice. He also holds an affiliate faculty role in the College of Education within the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. In his written scholarship he chooses to focus on and make sense of how African Americans experience racism in both the systems of higher education as well as criminal justice. He is rooted in disrupting how oppressive systems steal our voices, rename our experiences, and prohibit us from telling our own stories. As a public scholar, Frederick uses his voice to provide context to what liberation looks like and what is required of us. His public work has been published in media outlets such as Blavity, Diverse Issues in Higher Education, and Forbes. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/koolkard/support
