If you've been listening to or watching the BariNation podcast for a while, you've heard us say obesity is a chronic and lifelong disease and that bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment. But what happens when our first surgery is not enough? What happens when our surgery does not get to a point where we are metabolically well or our first surgery triggers new and unwelcomed symptoms or complications? Revision surgery is something many patients will go through, yet it is surrounded in shame, guilt, and fear. April and Jason sat down with Dr. Joe Cribbins and Dr. Edmund Chen, two board-certified bariatric surgeons, to discuss revision surgery. We explore why revision surgery is sometimes necessary and needed and, we can identify when a revision might be required and better understand the steps we can take to begin the conversation with our medical teams. We spent time understanding how Jason came to his decision to pursue bariatric surgery and the guilt and shame he had to work through to find his bariatric hope again. As patients, we have to recognize that our disease will continue to progress in our lives, despite doing everything “right” and that the only way to live with the disease is to continue to treat it. If you're pre-op, we hope you leave this conversation with a better understanding of being an engaged, informed, and educated bariatric patient. If you're post-op and struggling with weight recurrence, the return or continuation of co-morbidities, or the onset of new conditions, you can find your hope again, like Jason, and pursue different treatment options. A Cherokee County School District teacher has been selected for a professional development program at NASA. Cherokee High School astronomy and physical science teacher Lana Glaus will participate this summer in the LiftOff Alumni Summer Institute at the Kennedy Space Center in Cocoa Beach, Fla, the district announced. The institute offers workshops, hands-on activities, field investigations and presentations by NASA scientists and engineers working on various missions. The nationally competitive program is sponsored by NASA, its Texas Space Grant Consortium, University of Texas Center for Space Research and industries. This is the second consecutive year that Glaus has been chosen to participate. The costs associated with participating will be paid by NASA's Georgia and Texas Space Consortiums. This year's theme for the program is “Planetary Defenders,” and teachers will learn more about NASA's study of asteroids and comets and how to protect Earth from their impact. Justin Bolsen, a first-year student at Brown University student from Cherokee County, won the $100,000 prize on "Jeopardy!" Thursday evening. By winning the Jeopardy! High School Reunion Tournament, Bolsen, 18, will be the youngest contestant in the Tournament of Champions competition this fall. Bolsen, a Creekview High School graduate, said he studied hard to get this point and is "overjoyed" to be the winner of season 39. Bolsen competed against fellow Georgian Maya Wright, a senior at Emory University from Peachtree City, and Jackson Jones, a junior at Vanderbilt University from Louisville, Ky. in a two-day final. Scores were combined from both nights. In the Tournament of Champions, Bolsen will be facing some of the best "Jeopardy!" contestants to compete on the show. Sequoyah boys' basketball coach Allen Carden announced he will be stepping down from his position with the Chiefs after a meeting with the school's administration last Friday. Carden led Sequoyah's program for the last seven seasons, taking the Chiefs to the Final Four in 2022, and winning a Region 7AAAAAA title that same season. Sequoyah went 17-12 this season and made the state playoffs. “In a meeting (with) admin, it was decided that I should step down as men's basketball coach at Sequoyah HS,” Carden said in a tweet. “Decisions can be left to interpretation. A difference in philosophy of how a top notch program should be run and irreconcilable differences were the main issues.” During his stint with the Chiefs, Carden coached to a 120-83 overall record with five state tournament appearances. He leaves with three 20-win seasons, three Elite 8 appearances and three Sweet 16 showings. In the playoffs last year, he coached Sequoyah to a 135-point outburst in a home playoff win over Paulding County. The Chiefs hit 16 3-pointers in a game three times with Carden at the helm. Since he joined Sequoyah, 10 players have gone on to play college basketball, including Kyle Keener and Dylan Wolle from last season's Final Four team. Carden had five 1,000-point scorers with the Chiefs. Sequoyah athletic director Peter Vajda declined to comment on the decision. The Cherokee County Planning Commission has voted to recommend denial of a request to bring a special events facility to Highway 20 in east Cherokee. The planning commission voted 7-2 to recommend denial of a request from Countryside Ventures, LLC to rezone 16.76 acres from agriculture single family residential to general commercial at 14045 Cumming Highway, near Hopewell Road. The applicant is also requesting a special use permit to build a 6,400 square foot special event facility, which the commission voted 8-1 to recommend denial. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on both applications April 4. Two nearby residents spoke in opposition of this request, citing concerns with noise from the facility, sewage affecting the wildlife and environment in the area and impact to quality of life. Some planning commissioners also voiced concerns with the impact that this facility would have on nearby residents, as well as traffic in the area. If approved by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners next month, the facility, which would hold up to 200 people, would be called Countryside Ventures. Creekview High School student Kennedy Easterling will be inducted into the National Society of High School Scholars, the organization announced. Young NSHSS scholars get a life-time membership to the organization after their induction. There are more than 1,700,000 members in over 170 countries, according to the society. In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Donald S. Frazier, Director of the Texas Center at Schreiner University in Kerrville, TX. My journey to backpack across America began in San Deigo in Sept. of 1999. I took a brief layover in Marble Falls and Austin, TX, in 2000 while en route to Maine. I had set out from Austin on March 2, 2000, to coincide with Texas Independence Day. So in honor of Texas Independence, I wanted to have an expert as a guest who could share with the many non-Texas listeners (and plenty of Texans, too) why we are proud of our Texas heritage.

Graduating from family medicine residency at Georgia's Martin Army Hospital, she began 14 years of service as a US Army physician, caring for men and women from all over the country undergoing basic training, airborne school, ranger school, and soldiers on post. During that time, she delivered hundreds of babies and treated hundreds of soldiers on the ground. She then relocated to North Carolina to serve as Battalion Surgeon, where she first practiced telemedicine while overseeing the care of special operations combat medics deployed to Africa. This experience prepared her for the med/peds hospitalist role at the Fort Campbell, Kentucky Army Hospital. She then went on to help build the Army's extensive telemedicine networks before doing the same for dozens of private virtual health companies. Upon leaving the military, Dr. Purdy discovered her passion for ensuring equal access to quality healthcare for everyone in America. She immersed herself in the digital healthcare industry, seeing over 20,000 virtual patients as the first full-time telemedicine physician and Medical Director for MDLIVE. This led to a key role in bringing virtual treatment to COVID-19 pandemic patients and those in the Ukraine war zone. Now, Dr. Purdy is a sought-after digital medicine expert serving as Medical Director/Co-Founder and advisor for more than 50 leading telehealth providers, including Hims and Hers, Wisp, Rise Medical, OpenLoop, and MDintegrations - a telehealth company designed to deliver care for health tech startups across North America. Dr. Purdy resides in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband of 10 years, juggling a busy “mompreneur” life with four kids under the age of 10! At the young age of 38, the well-deserved title of “America's Doctor” has been awarded to her by colleagues across the nation. Fueled by a passion and drive to help as many people as she can, Dr. Laura Purdy uses her role as a C-Suite executive to carry out a vision of establishing the most advanced telehealth systems. Bringing together the greatest minds in medicine, she seeks to help millions of people using the best that technology has to offer. The CE experience for this Podcast is powered by CMEfy - click here to reflect and earn credits: https://earnc.me/ttU4Pc Dr. Bob was born in New York City. An unusual place for someone who became such a lover of wilderness and things far from the concrete jungle. His family moved to Texas when he was five years old. Lived outside of Houston in a small community known as Seabrook, near a slightly better known region, Clear Lake where he went to high school and played baseball. At an early age he became athletic and stuck with athletics throughout high school and early college. Once he quit competing he became fairly dedicated to training for health with both resistance training and cardiovascular training as part of his lifestyle all the way through college, medical school and into his adulthood. He attended college at Sam Houston State University where he was convinced by his mentor and Cell Biology professor to give up his idea of becoming a fisheries biologist and consider medical school. After taking the MCAT and scoring well, he decided to throw his hat into the ring and just go ahead and apply to the schools in Texas. After interviewing at the University of Texas school systems, he fell in love with UT Southwestern and ranked that school number one, which eventually had him on the hook for going to medical school. He appreciated his education at UT Southwestern realizing it prepared him well. Graduating right at the 10th percentile of his class gave him the opportunity to go into whatever field he wished. He realized he was born to be a surgeon, but after four years of medical he also realized he was not a fan of the hospitals. By this time in his career he was already starting to sniff the fact that there was a lot of questionable practice in medicine. He had also discovered Alaska, having traveled there to work on a commercial fishing boat in the summer between college and med school. Since he knew he wanted to be in Alaska, and he dreamed of opening his own fishing lodge, emergency medicine seemed like a logical choice, and once again he was able to attend the program that he ranked first. After completing a residency in emergency medicine at Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis, he was ready for his new life to begin. As luck would have it, a job was available on the Kenai peninsula, the area he had fallen in love with the first time we visited Alaska. He moved up there, started practicing medicine at Central Peninsula Hospital and immediately turned his off shift attention to building a hunting and fishing lodge. Within three years of arriving to Alaska, All Alaska Outdoors Lodge became a reality. He had obtained his pilots license and captains license during his residency years and began guiding on the rivers and flying and exploring Alaska in his first aircraft, a Piper Super Cub. He quickly realized his heart was in flying, and obtained his commercial an instrument rating and eventually started flying for his own fishing lodge. He worked his way up through flying 185's to a de Havilland Beaver which he still owns to this day. Nowadays, he spends around 100 days a summer piloting a commercial bush plane taking people on the adventure of a lifetime. He plodded along in his medical career, successfully treating somewhere around 60,000 patients in what spanned a 27 year career. By the end, what plagues most ER doctors got him, he was just flat burnt out. He was starting to see patients in his own age range afflicted with the metabolic diseases that ravage this country. In 2014 he decided to train with Cenegenics, a company built by doctors, with a vision of health and wellness achieved through a proactive, integrative medicine design. Of all the training he had in his entire life, this was probably the most impactful. He was at an age where the ADLs were starting to get rough. 100 days of bush activity a summer, flying and guiding, while trying to practice full-time emergency medicine, raise a family, coach baseball and all of the other things, was starting to become more difficult at the same time that his energy level and drive was starting to decline. Turning to Health And Wellness medicine changed all of that. Once he applied the knowledge he learned from the literature that is readily available in this domain, his life and body transformed. By 2017 he had discontinued his practice at Central Peninsula Hospital and started to focus more on health and wellness and building his private practice. He continue to work in some small hospitals to provide expert emergency care in rural areas where the need was underserved. Eventually, the development of the Covid pandemic and all of its baggage was more than he could tolerate, and he completely resigned from all forms of reactive medicine. He now practices solely in a concierge style practice with a small group of patients focused on learning the most about their pre-existing risk and how to mitigate the chance of a bad outcome. A blended model of medicine is provided by Dr. Bob, reaching first for lifestyle but still including conventional medication when indicated and necessary. Order yours today! Join the Conversation! In a prime-time speech to the American public, President Biden called out lies about the 2020 presidential election that have led to political violence. But is that enough to embolden Democratic voting blocs like young and Black voters to turn out at the polls? Peniel Joseph, director of the University of Texas Center for the Study of Race and Democracy, joins us. Then, as midterm elections approach, five states have slavery on the ballot. In Alabama, Louisiana, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont, loopholes exist that allow for the forced labor of incarcerated citizens, and voters will weigh in on whether to remove them from state constitutions. Christina Carrega, a national criminal justice reporter for Capital B News, joins us. And, "Listen, World!," a new book from Allison Gilbert and Julia Scheerer explores the life of Elsie Robinson, a prolific journalist and columnist born in the early 1900s. She became the most-read woman in America, though many didn't know her name. Author Gilbert joins us.

Taking everything he'd learned as a doctor, medical director, and educator, he launched two businesses—a vaccine clinic and a drug-testing enterprise—that are driven by technology and designed for fast, customer-centric service. Now, as those businesses grow, he's continuing to write his second career chapter as a health care CEO. Dr. Baktari's company e7 Health was named the best technology company in the healthcare space in 2019. e7 Health could best be described as “the Uber of preventive medicine” in that it is a systems company that has invested heavily in developing their own electronic cloud-based software to leverage technology for the benefit of their operation, patients, and clients. In addition to vaccines, antibody testing, and many other medical services essential to employers around the country, e7 is now providing at home COVID-19 tests for individuals and companies all over the US. Dr. Baktari has always believed that helping others was the ultimate achievement in life. Working on medical billing can be stressful for healthcare providers.
