Dr. Johnson has also done extensive research that shows the undeniable results that a Christian worldview has on mainstream society and in our daily lives. Blackballed for his faith early in his academic career, Dr. Byron Johnson, author of More God, Less Crime, did not shy away or stand down from his outspoken Christian worldview. On today's edition of Family Talk, the Hon. Michele Bachmann talks with Dr. Johnson about his time as a university professor on secular campuses. Even in the face of such discrimination against people of faith, God blessed Dr. Johnson's earnest research which culminated in his meteoric rise in the world of academia. Chances are you started your business because you had a burning desire to not only help others but find more freedom in your schedule and freedom in your finances. But have you been chasing a false sense of freedom when Jesus already came and SET YOU FREE? I used to market FREEDOM through business opportunities, too. But I learned the hard way, more success in business does not equal more freedom. In fact, my experience was the exact opposite. The more success I had (built an 8 figure brand), the more stress I felt, the more pressure I felt, the more anxiety I had, the more my health declined. In today's episode, we are getting to the heart and mind of the matter when it comes to FREEDOM and how you can choose freedom today regardless of your bank account, busy calendar, or anything else that is keeping you from feeling free. This one might require a tissue. Tears are a beautiful thing. Don't shut them down. Let them flow as Holy Spirit ministers to your weary soul. I'm here for you, sister friend, as we journey together into becoming the CEO God created us to be. _____ Don't forget to mark your calendar for my workshop on Nov 6 & 7 all about pursuing THE MORE God has for you without losing your peace and sacrificing the things that matter most to you! More details to come.

My guest today is someone I consider an important teacher in my life, Stephen Jenkinson. He is a cultural activist, he is a farmer and a philosopher. He is the author of a number of books including some that are my favourites. He presents life as it really is and because he has worked with the dying for so many years, he attempts to anchor us in the reality of where we are. There isn't a time that we need this more. This might not appear to be a very cheerful conversation but if you understand my work, I expect to have one of the most cheerful conversations about the reality of where we are today. This is definitely an important moment in my life when I meet one of my teachers. Stephen Jenkinson is an author, a farmer and a philosopher. He has years of experience as a palliative care worker and is a former programme director at a major Canadian hospital. Stephen has Master's degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social Work). He is also a co-founder of The Orphan Wisdom School. We were fortunate to have two such interesting 'hands on' academics in this conversation. Within an academic climate that is not always sympathetic or collaborative they engaged in a three year research project in one of the most notorious penal establishments in the Uniteds States, Angola. Dr. Michael Hallett is a full Professor in the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at the University of North Florida. Dr. Hallett just finished his fourth book and has published research appearing in numerous additional books and journals including Punishment & Society, Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, Critical Criminology and others. Dr. Hallett's focus is Corrections & Social Inequality, Punishment & Society, and Religion & Crime. Dr. Hallett designed Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Pretrial Services Unit (drug treatment/diversion) and has completed extensive work with local organizations including Prisoners of Christ, Operation New Hope, Hubbard House, the City of Jacksonville, JCCI and others. Most recently, Dr. Hallett led a three-year study at America's largest maximum-security prison, "Angola" (aka Louisiana State Penitentiary) exploring the religious lives of long-term inmates. He has served as Principal Investigator on grants from the US Department of Justice, Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Jesse Ball DuPont Foundation, and several other organizations. Dr. Hallett has chaired two academic departments at UNF (Sociology, Anthropology & Criminal Justice and Criminology & Criminal Justice) after first directing the Graduate program in Criminal Justice. Dr. Hallett frequently works on local justice issues in Jacksonville and has completed over a dozen funded projects at UNF, often employing students in the research. Dr Hallett also serves as a Senior Research Fellow at Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion. Hallett, M. (Guest Editor) Special Issue * Social Justice * "Emancipatory Justice." Hey sis! I want to talk to you about seasons of SURRENDER. I know I find myself in them, often. And... I know they can be HARD! Letting go of control is not natural for so many of us, but when we get out of God's way, He can work MIRACLES in our lives, minds, and hearts. Surrendering has yielded so much fruit in my life. So much so that I seek out ways to operate with MORE GOD, LESS ME. Hebrews 12:11 promises us: "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." - Hebrews 12:11 In today's episode we go through what surrendering means, how to know if you're being called to surrender, and how to navigate it by partnering with God. I walk you though some of my recent seasons of surrender and I hope it shows you that there is Heavenly treasure in store for you when lean into God's direction. I love you so much sis! Xo, Stef P.S. Is this good enough for me to stay the same? This is the life-saving question Laura McKowen, author of We Are the Luckiest + one of the foremost voices in the modern recovery movement, asked herself. From a horrific DWI to the painful incident that left her 4-year-old daughter in danger, Laura shares her personal journey in choosing sobriety with the utmost vulnerability + candor. But this is more than just one person's journey of using addiction as an invitation to living more intentionally. Today's powerful and thought-provoking conversation will inspire you to practice self-forgiveness and free yourself of shame and guilt. SHOW NOTES: Writing a letter to "2012 Laura": Laura started blogging about her journey to sobriety, not for others but to heal herself. During her college going-away party, Laura recalls freely drink around her family and how the buzz finally allowed her to cope with the struggles she was facing. Laura would chase opportunities and social situations to drink and even gravitated towards a career in the booze-laden advertising industry. While not always problematic, drinking allowed Laura be free and get the love + attention she wanted. The wake-up call: It wasn't after a horrific DWI, but when Laura left her 4-year-old daughter alone in a hotel room overnight that Laura knew she had to make a change. The natural question with alcohol addiction is “Is this bad enough that I have to change?” but Laura feels the question should be "Is this good enough for me to stay the same?", followed by "Are you free?" "My worst nightmares happened and I created them." Laura shares how she's been able to move past shame + guilt towards mercy. Our pain, obstacles, and struggles are invitations to a bigger life. If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you. - Gospel of Thomas Be honest: Laura encourages those struggling with addiction to share their struggle with another person. Get Laura McKowen's We Are the Luckiest here. If you found today's episode inspiring, you'll enjoy my conversation with Fr. Tom Hoar. On Live Inspired Podcast ep. 134, Fr. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The History of Love by Nicole Krauss. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Playfulness. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A painting from my late-grandma. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Poet Mary Oliver. She was the master of paying attention and exquisite way of turning the very mundane into the profound. Her poems have saved my life. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? It's okay to practice. You're not performing all the time. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? My instinct is to say, "you don't need to drink" but I'm so grateful I went down the path I did. I'd tell her "you're going to be loved." 7. The STRETCH is the catalyst that unlocks the MORE that He has. As I do my part, God will miraculously do His part! I am stretching for MORE, because that is who God is. God is the God of MORE. 2 Corinthians 8:7 (NIV) But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.context: this scripture was dealing with a vision builders offering in Corinth communicated for over a year, focused to meet the need of sister church in a different city. excel – considerably more than what anyone expects grace – something given freely and generously by Godgiving – specifically in churchThe following several chapters Paul talks about this offering. The following verses are directed at those who would participate in the Vision Offering:2 Corinthians 9:6–8 (ESV) The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.2 Corinthians 9:10–12 (ESV) He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.Vision requires MORE than the day to day. Vision will always require faith. Faith to see it. Faith to resource it. Faith to build it. Vision will always require Vision Builders. When vision is embraced with faith, miraculous things happen to build the vision, AND miraculous things happen for the Vision Builder. When we help build God’s house, he helps build ours!Excel In The Grace of Giving…1. share something – our first efforts to take something of ours and give to the church.2. return the tithefirst 10th income, return to house of the Lord, live on 90%allows for bread in house, God’s blessingthe tithe recognizes God as sourceit keeps money in its rightful place, controlling greedunlocks a supernatural flow3. give additional offeringsabove and beyond tithe, for missionary, special project, etc.see a need, give what you canat first it will feel like, “but I already give so much”4. become a Vision Builder, activating FAITH for His House and yoursat this stage, you’ve seen God do some amazing thingsthis stage vision driven, faith activated, requires a sacrificethis stage, faith stories are created - vision is accomplished and givers unlock a back flow into their own life that is remarkable.Become A Vision Builder
Psalm 37:4 (ESV) Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.Luke 12:29–31 (ESV) And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.In 2020, God has MORE. MORE for me. MORE for you. MORE for us. MORE through us for them! I will not wait for MORE to simply show up. I am STRETCHING for the MORE God has for me. The STRETCH is the catalyst that unlocks the MORE that He has. As I do my part, God will miraculously do His part! I am stretching for MORE, because that is who God is. God is the God of MORE. The first MORE we will always stretch for is MORE of Him.DESIRE: something wanted that leads to a questThere are two types of DESIRE: EMOTIONAL and INFORMED. Bother will take you to its destination.Emotionally Fueled Desires Have Drawbacks:have to be continually refueled by emotions and emotions often change, to sometimes contradictory desire, requiring a change of directioneasily influenced (turn off soundtrack in a scary movie)can be easily manipulated (child support commercials – flies, watery eyes, dump, sad music)can be misinformed, even deceived (think you’re being pulled over by police)the epicenter where temptation occursdifficult to arrive at specific solid destinationmost destinations are filled with unmet expectationsInformed Desires Have Great Strengths: ignores emotion, distraction, misinformation, manipulations, temptation, by continually re-informing itself of the “why” regularly arrives at specific, highly valued destinations and regularly enjoys the benefits.“The heart wants what the heart wants” is only half true. You can tell the heart what to want and it will! When you set your heart on a desire and experience it, it is amazing. But in God’s economy, there is one superfluous desire that radically unlocks all other desires…Deisring More of God, FIRST!When More of God is Your First Desire:1. your first desire will be satisfied - Jeremiah 29:12–14 (ESV) Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord.2. He will influence your other desires for the better - He will give you the desires of your heart.3. your other desires will also be satisfied - Proverbs 10:22 (ESV) The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.4. He will meet all of your needs – Luke 12:29-31 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. MORE of God, FIRST is more than an idea, it is a way of living!it is a series of simple, informed decisions that turn into a lifestyle filled with MORE!Set Time With God, Firstdoesn’t have to be first thing in the morningdoesn’t have to be the longest time slotfocused, distraction free, intimate time in the Word, time in prayer. Listen To God, Firstdecide in advance to say YES to anything and everything that God sayswhen your discover God requires an adjustment in thinking or action, do it immediately.when you disobey scripture, you put yourself first, or someone else first.·allow the input of others to come after you have consulted HimHis words to you are at the level of scripturedon’t ignore, reject and ultimately grieve the Holy Spirit Become Like Him, Firstwe look to others and emulate them, becoming more like them we are made in His image, but the image is skewedRomans 8:29 (ESV) For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV) And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.we should always have one or two areas in nonconformity that are being conformedthe big external obvious tend to be first: murder, theft, lying, sexual sin, drunkennessthe deeper works of the soul come next: fear, identity, Give To Him, Firstgive is against our nature, the first struggle every child experiences – we are firsttithe – when God gives to you, your return a tenth to Him before you do anything elseoffering, sacrifice offering – dreaming about a trip, large ticket item… dream about a big amount to give to himserviceyou can give to him by giving to others - Matthew 25:40 (ESV) And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.
Grace is More “God loves me as I am” - God ‘s love wont leave me here For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, Paralyzed by Grace for every day living…
When the Spirit of God and the Word of God create the people of God, astounding things happen. Acts is an historical account. But is it more? What if Acts happened again in our own day? What if Acts sets the pace, gives us our marching orders? What would Belfast look like then? By the end of the Book of Acts, there are no signs of the Advance of the Gospel slowing down. So we pray, ‘More God! Do it again!’ Main text: Acts 3:1-4:22 Speaker: David Varney
