About the Guest(s): Kennedy Evans is an up-and-coming basketball talent with a bright future ahead. Hailing from Texas, she has played basketball since a young age, transitioning her skills from a recognized post player in middle school to a formidable guard position. With experience playing for Cy-Fair and ProSkills in AAU basketball, Kennedy has honed her abilities and was recruited to play for Oklahoma State. Beyond the court, Kennedy showcases leadership and a proactive mindset. She is currently attending Legion Prep to prepare for the collegiate level and aspires to become a sports broadcaster, leveraging her passion for basketball and communication. Episode Summary: In this episode of "It's Just Different," host Ashley Roberts engages in a dynamic conversation with Kennedy Evans, a rising basketball star and future Oklahoma State athlete. Kennedy discusses the intricacies of her AAU experience, the tough decision to switch teams and the unwavering support from her coach-parents. Delving further, she reflects on the difficulties of dealing with an injury and shares valuable advice for young athletes on navigating the recruitment process. The episode gains depth as Kennedy addresses the role of mental health in athletics and emphasizes the importance of parents letting kids forge their own journey without undue pressure. Key Takeaways: Transitioning positions in sports is about adapting to physical capabilities and showcasing one's skills effectively; it requires mindful decision-making. Choosing the right AAU team involves a balance of talent display, personal growth, and an environment that feels like home. The support of a team and maintaining presence during an injury can have a significant impact on an athlete's recovery and mental health. Parents play a crucial role in an athlete's development by providing support and letting the child shape their own sports journey. Understanding and accepting the realities of professional sports – like the pay disparities in the WNBA – can lead to seeking careers that align with one's passion and practical life goals. Quotes: "Do what's best for you and don't let somebody else's path affect yours." "People are going to talk. There's going to be everybody that's saying stuff that you might not like... You just got to do what you think is best for yourself." "Your path is different than everybody else's. Just because somebody could do something better than you doesn't mean you're not good or you're less than them." St. Mark's lived up to its TXWaterpolo top ranking and defeated a very game Dawson High School to win its 9th boys' state title in Cy-Fair last Saturday. We talk with a soaked Trent Calder, first-year head coach of the Lions, about his comeback win. And the summer schedule doesn't resemble anything like what we saw in 2020 for understandable reasons. We talk about the packed schedule, including JOs in North Texas and ODP Regional Championships a week from now. Austin College's women earn a top-25 ranking as the NCAA season closes out with a big title win for USC. And we're cutting back. We're basically one year away from Texas' first ever state sanctioned high school water polo season. So, where are we? How did we get here? What's it going to look like beginning in August of 2021? What needs to be done before then? James has no answers, but - this is a shocker - Joe does. We also talk about the passing of an American water polo legend, Andy Burke. He was most associated with the Olympic Club located in San Francisco. But, it turns out, he had a connection with Texas as so many others do. And we finish with Joe's conversation with Kris Jones, an aquatics director for the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD (known by everyone who has a pulse as Cy-Fair). The two discuss the Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (aka TISCA), how Covid is changing everything in the Houston aquatics world, and what it might look like a year from now in the fall high school water polo season. Faye Levow was determined to create a comprehensive resource so that no one would ever again be lost in a whirlwind of caring for aging family members. Her upcoming book, “OMG! My Parents Are Getting OLD!” is the result of that determination. At every related speaking engagement, Levow emphasizes the importance of being prepared for the time when one's faculties are no longer as sharp and one's body requires more care and assistance. “The worst of everything that happens is because people are not prepared. They have been in denial and that hurts everyone,” she says. In the rest of her life, from coaching to editing to publishing, Faye Levow's passion is to help authors get their books out of their heads, and get their message, in their voice, to their audience Asheva Phillips has been with Senior Citizens Bureau since 1998. Starting as a volunteer and quickly being promoted to Program Director, Asheva is now the President of the national organization. After researching, along with the Board, and determining a real need in Cy-Fair for a place for those 50+ to socialize, be educated and receive support, the idea of Vaughn Gage Healthy Aging was born. Vaughn Gage (VG) Healthy Aging Center takes a holistic look at each member.
