Week 2 got off to an exciting start last night with another game winning field goal to end the Thursday night game. This time, it was by Dustin Hopkins (who gets an extra 3 clutch points for his Dynasty Owners with that kick). His 43 yard FG with no time remaining in regulation gave the Washington Football Team a 30-29 victory over the New York Giants. Two weeks and two game winning FGs on Thursday night plus the wild ending to Monday Night Football. Quite the start to the 2021 season!I doubt that anyone could have predicted those cliffhanger results and that our Dynasty Owner Match-up of the Week for Week 1 would come down to a clutch FG in the fourth quarter of the Monday Night Football game. That's what makes the NFL and fantasy football so much fun (at least if you team wins). Unlike those games, I won't make you wait until the end of this article to find out how my recommendations fared and who I'm recommending this week.-------------------------------------------------------What is Dynasty Owner? Dynasty Owner is not your average fantasy football. You may have your DraftKings and Fanduels of the world but we are year-round and put you right in the seat of the Owner, Coach, and GM. Fantasy footballers all over have been wanting a game like this and you may have even heard our name from Christopher Harris or even the Dynasty Nerds podcast. We use real NFL contracts and salaries in our game so when something changes here in the real world it affects your team for the year. With a challenge of the salary cap and keeping your team under it, you get the feeling of what it's like to run a business and see your team get rewarded when they win.Learn more today at www.dynastyowner.com and come see what we are all about.-------------------------------------------------------Connect with Dynasty Owner:Visit us on the web -- https://www.dynastyowner.comFollow us on Twitter -- @Dynasty_OwnerFollow on Facebook - www.facebook.com/DynastyOwnerFantasySports

The guys talk about Cam Newton’s big debut for the Patriots, and how different their offense looks without Tom Brady at the helm (01:54). Morten also weighs in on the complicated debut of Stephen Gostkowski with the Titans, as he misses four kicks – 3 FGs, 1 PAT – but still manages to hit the game-winner to give Tennessee a week 1 victory in Denver (3:07).We then move to our interview with Trent, where he discusses a wide array of topics: getting an NFL season going during a pandemic (7:45); working with his new broadcast partner for the 2020 season, Kevin Harlan (9:36); how he got started in broadcasting, and why quarterbacks seem to make great color commentators (10:50); a hilarious story about Morten calling games for NFL Europe in the early 2000s (13:54); being a journeyman quarterback in the early part of his career, as he was cut by the San Diego Chargers and British Columbia Lions (CFL), and sat on the bench in Washington (19:53); the unique experience of by a star quarterback at a “basketball school,” as he shared a campus with Bob Knight at Indiana (20:54); suffering a devastating knee injury in the final preseason game of the 1999 season, and having to watch his St. Louis Rams have an all-time great season en route to a Super Bowl victory (24:35); mentoring a young Kurt Warner during his years in St. Louis (29:14); a hilarious story about Morten joining the Chiefs, and Trent reacting to how old Morten was at the time (33:17); why the 8-8 Chiefs in 2002 were actually better than the 13-3 Chiefs in 2003 (34:22); a story about Morten’s first game with the Chiefs, and why it was one of the wildest finishes in either one of their careers (35:07); how Dick Vermeil’s emphasis on building team chemistry helped make the Chiefs a force in the early 2000s (38:28); how Tony Gonzalez paved the way for the dominant pass-catching tight ends in today’s NFL (41:25); Trent’s thoughts on today’s Chiefs, and why we should all pump the breaks on the dynasty tag for now (44:54); talking about his sons playing college football – Derek Green at SMU and T.J. Green at Northwestern (48:44); and how calling games in empty stadiums is going to be a strange experience (50:55).Then, TommyFreezePops is joined by Kevin Rogers for his weekly check-in with the experts from VegasInsider.com (52:46 – 01:03:29). They talk about the dangerous new toy in the potent Kansas City offense is, and how difficult it’s going to be to slow down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs (53:33). What Makes For Goodness Sake a Good Neighbor...I purchased For Goodness Sake in Bonita Springs Florida this year as the culminating event in a 3-year personal journey that began in crisis and ended with the creation of something special and spirit changing. I loved that some staff were still here decades after the store was established because they love what we (they) do. Many loyal customers are still here decades later because our staff have cared for them and made staying healthy fun.For people who haven’t discovered the store yet; For Goodness Sake (FGS) is your neighborhood marketplace for people with a lifestyle approach to health. The natural and organic health arena can be confusing. The food industry has chased the capitalist dream of driving prices down … and left a lot of us chronically unwell because of that. FGS is your partner to fix this; ensuring quality and simplifying the process. We offer a wide variety of produce, nutritional supplements, and prepared items to help our customers choose what’s best for them. We add value by performing the due diligence on our many suppliers to ensure we offer the best relevant seals of approval in the following areas of lifestyle choice:✅ Organic (preparation and contents certified by USDA)✅ Natural (antibiotic free, free range, humanely treated)✅ Locally sourced (we visit suppliers and examine the toxicology reports)✅ Vegan✅ Gluten FreeAbove all, I believe natural food has a role in preventing and even reversing the chronic diseases that seem to be accelerating in our society. To learn more about For Goodness Sake, go to: https://forgoodnesssakes.com/For Goodness SakeSUNSHINE PLAZA,118 Bonita Beach RoadBonita Springs, FL 34135239-992-5838Support the show (https://goodneighborpodcast.com)

Family historians in the United States are likely familiar with our genealogical conferences–NGS, FGS, Regional Conferences and of course the mega conference that's Rootstech, but there are other conferences held around the world. MyHeritage offered an international conference in Norway, then the Netherlands and this year its being held in Israel.   In the United Kingdom, I attended the Who Do You Think You Are LIVE conference for several years running. It offered me an opportunity to explore resources to learn more about my UK ancestors, consult with professional genealogists that specialize in that geographic speciality and a chance to meet a lot of interesting people.  Now there's a relatively new conference on the circuit. It's the Genealogy Show coordinated by Kirsty Gray. In full disclosure…I'm one of the keynote speakers in 2020. If you're looking for a different conference experience, think about attending the Genealogy Show. It's held in Birmingham, England and has a packed schedule.  There are forty-eight different talks over the two days. The exhibition hall provides a great way to explore, network, and shop. WAR AND DISEASE: THE WORLD IN 1918 (starts at 0:50) Germans start using U-Boats. Russia drops out, U.S. enters the war in April 1917. But the U.S. takes a year to get there. "Spanish” Flu: Killed 50 to 100 million globally. U.S. loses 110,000 in the war, 40% of whom die of the flu, and most of these before they even went abroad. Especially hit children (today they think people who’d gotten other flus had some immunity built up). Most who died did so from pneumonia. Spread from Camp Devens near Boston. U.S. didn’t want to incite panic so they kept it out of headlines and purposefully didn’t respond quickly. Epidemic hit peak fear on October 11 and ⅔ games were called off. Athletic: By the start of November, just 87 college games had been played nationwide. In 1916 and 1917, those figures had been 291 games and 253 games, respectively. The following season, 287 games would be played across the country before November. [Hit THE JUMP for the player and rest of the writeup] 2. JOHN U. BACON (starts at 11:24) Rule changes: eligible receivers can catch the ball anywhere on the field.  Threat of cancellation: Germany’s spring offensive in 1918 was followed by the Allies’ 100 days offensive, and in the middle of that the Big Ten considered calling off its games. War teams: Chicago Naval Reserve went 4-0 vs Chicago, Illinois, Northwestern and Minnesota. Because so many players are leaving for the war they lift the Freshman rule for a year. ROTC created in 1916 but can’t wait two years so they also create the SATC to train officers quickly. Most of the football team joined (since you could be drafted if you didn’t). Penn, Michigan’s rival through its Big Ten hiatus, lost 6 players in 1918. Every Saturday you’d have to field a different lineup. Stagg: “I think I voice the sentiments of every coach in the country when I say we will teach football this season for Uncle Sam without having the desire to win foremost in our minds,” Stagg said, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “Our first thoughts will be to get the men into physical condition, teach them how to think and act quickly and show them the best way of charging and blocking. Team play in football corresponds to the unity of attack in the army. I think playing the game will make better officers.” SATC means the federal govt, not NCAA, can set standards. Left it to the War Dept. War Department (now State Dept) was running the homefront: quarantines and travel restrictions were being promulgated all summer. Finally clarified them in October: Academic standards No more than one and a half hours per day of football practice, No football games in October that required an absence from campus for a period longer than “Noon to Taps on Saturday” Only 4 November games per school, two at home, two on the road “which shall in no case involve longer absences than from retreat Friday to taps Sunday.” Can’t charge high admission for any game involving a military team. Pitt bitched because they had to go into the city to use their field so they lost half their practice time getting there. Minnesota turned their entire program over to the local military guy (commandant), as in the Minnesota coaches were told to take a hike. 3. THE TEAM (starts at 33:06) Lose almost everybody, including second year in a row their captain (Tad Wieman) leaves to go fight in the war (he enlisted in the Aviation Corps). Also lost halfback Eddie Usher after the first game. Who’s back then? Goetz (moved from end to guard to tackle), and Cohn. BACKS: Quarterback Kenneth T. “Mike” Knode (Sr) Was Maryland’s starting QB and transferred to Michigan. More of a baseball star, played pro ball for the St. Louis Cardinals. Older brother of Robert Knode, who also played for Michigan before becoming a Cleveland Indians All Star. He’s in the Univ of Maryland Hall of Fame. Left Halfback John S. “Jack” Perrin (Jr). From Escanaba, left after the 1918 season and served in the Navy two years, then played again in 1920. Had a cup of coffee with the Red Sox in 1921 and bounced around the minors then tried pro football. Hart-like. Right Halfback Abe Cohn (junior) (5), ACTING CAPTAIN: Star in basketball too. Jewish son of Russian immigrants, from Spokane (born in Portland, Oregon), dad and bros owned a furniture business. Via the Free Press he was a Brandon Minor/De’Veon Smith type: "He made a gain practically every time he was given the ball and, when he was stopped, it always took two or three men to turn the trick. Could have played into 1919 but redshirted basically so he could play in 1920, since 1919 was going to be packed with guys who were back from the war. Could play end or fullback too. Later became the head football and basketball coach at Whitworth College then Spokane University. On the side he was a PCC (now Pac 12) official, the last good one. Fullback/Punter/Kicker Frank Steketee (Fr) Deserves mention among the great Michigan special teams specialists and great all-around athletes. Rare Freshman, president of his class, was supposed to be behind Eddie Usher but Usher got called up after the Case Western game, in which Stek had impressed as a sub. In a punting era Frank was the best until Kipke--Stek once kicked a 100-yarder they say. Also one of the early range kickers, winning three big games in 1918 with his long FGs. Scored all the points in the Cuse game and intercepted the GW pass. Also had a hand in all 14 points against Ohio State, including a 73-yard punt that stopped at the 2 yard line. Only player in the West on the All-American team. Member of M’s first swim team and a great gymnast (not yet a varsity sport), and played on the M hockey team a bit.  Steketee himself got called up in 1919 and served overseas in the Navy, came back and was all-Big in 1920. Served again in WWII as a medic. FB Edward Usher: Injured after first game. Called up. Backups: HB/QB Harlan Walker (Jr). Started the first game at QQ; RHB William R. Cruse (Jr) Detroiter who went on to be a football and basketball coach in Iowa. ENDS: Left End/RE: Robert Jerome Dunne (Fr). Class of 1922. Yes, Chicagoans THAT Dunne--his father Edward F. Dunne was the mayor of Chicago then governor of Illinois. Candidate for best all-around athlete at Michigan: starred in track and basketball as well, and represented the U.S. in track at the 1920 Olympics in the Pentathalon. Came back and moved to guard on the 1920 and 1921 teams, was 1st team All-American in 1921. Went on to be the line coach at Northwestern, Harvard, and Chicago. Became a state court judge in Illinois. Probate judge oversaw the sale of the White Sox to Bill Veeck. Brother Maurice played for Yost 1913-16, and two more older brothers were athletes at Michigan. and another from 1944 plus and Arthur Dunne Right End: Theodore or Edwin Boville? (Soph) RE Arthur Karpus (So) Mostly a basketball star. Started the 2nd game (Chicago) only. Football/baseball/basketball star was the captain of the 1920-21 hoops team that won M’s first Big Ten championship. Became a mechanical engineer and worked for the highway commission. End Fred Hendershot didn’t play much but he’s the great grandfather of the Indiana TE. LINE: Center: Henry A. “Ernie” Vick (Fr) The other star freshman would go on to be in the college football Hall of Fame. Vick was great at D and snapping. Kipke later said Vick was the best center since Germany Shultz. Said Yost: “He is the most accurate passer from center that has ever put a ball into play. Under pressure he was dependable at all times.” Mostly a big boxy “line plunger” (middle linebacker). Was finally All-American as a senior--by then Yost was consulting Vick on plays.Later was the catcher for Grover Cleveland Alexander on the 1920s St Louis Cardinals (Branch Rickey was coaching M baseball). Won a World Series in 1926. After baseball Vick came back as Michigan’s line coach for a time, then played some pro football, ending up on Halas’s Bears. Was later a football official for the Big Ten, and worked the Rose Bowl. Ended up in Ann Arbor. C Elmer W. “Earl” Cress: Started the Case game and played well. Left Tackle Angus Goetz (Soph). From Sault Ste. Marie, studied medicine at Michigan. Started the first game at guard. Had the huge punt block, elected captain in 1919 and 1920. "There is one star on the team, and that is Goetz, a great player. ... It is a line from poor to good, with one great spot where Goetz stood Story of Yost saying he would lose his ‘M’ if he played professional ball in 1922 (two years after graduation) and he turned down $2400 (10 games x $240) and Yost bragged about it. Goetz did play pro ball in 1922 and 1923 on the weekends while in med school. Became a leading orthopedic surgeon in Detroit (chief of orthopedics at Detroit Receiving Hospital). Served in WWII. Right Tackle Chester Cale Morrison (2). Know nothing except he apparently died in 1960 in Florida. He has several surviving grandchildren. Others: RT/LG William Fortune (Jr): one of the few guys to go on to play in the NFL, RT Francis T. “Frank” Czysz, RT Albert Lent, LT CC Clash, Left Guard: Theodore “Theo” Adams (3), Right Guard Jean Paul Freeman (5) LINEUPS: Fletcher   Clash Goetz   Cress   Freeman   Lent   Dunne                                          Walker Perrin        Usher       Cohn Chicago: Dunne Goetz   Adams   Vick Freeman   Morrison   Karpus                                         Knode                       Perrin       Steketee Cohn Syracuse:Dunne Goetz   Adams   Vick Freeman   Young   Morrison                                         Knode                         Perrin    Steketee Cohn MSC: Dunne Goetz   Adams   Vick Freeman Fortune Bovill                                         Knode                         Perrin    Steketee Cohn Ohio State: Dunne  Goetz Fortune   Vick Freeman Czysz   Bovill                                         Knode                         Perrin    Steketee Cohn 4. THE FIRST FOUR GAMES (starts at 1:08:53) via UMBentley Originally there were games @Cornell, vs Northwestern (in A2) and vs Minnesota (at A2) but those were canceled when the govt made its rule. Wartime travel restrictions canceled the Cornell and Minnesota games, and they replaced them with games against Camp Custer and University of Mount Vernon, but then the flu pandemic canceled both of those plus the Northwestern game, so they got Syracuse instead. [No games the rest of October because Camp Custer and Mount Union games canceled and MAC rescheduled] Daily isn’t in the mood to discuss the game. It gets one line on pg 2: “Football is a rough game for the Case lads. So they “hike” instead. @ CHICAGO 13-0Nov 9, 1918 Resumption of the old rivalry after 13 years! Last time UC won that 2-0 game that broke Yost’s 56-game winning streak. 7,000 fans come. Daily has a play by play. Not a great game--Cohn and Knode both fumble away early drives, the second leads to an attempted drop kick from the 45 yard line that Goetz blocked and ran 55 yards for a TD. End of the 3rd Q Michigan is driving and is on the Chicago 7. Michigan comes out of the quarter in a fake punt formation, snaps it to Perrin who rumbles to the 1. Got it in next play but Stek missed the XP. Stek has a bad game overall. Perrin is the star: SYRACUSE 15-0 Nov 16, 1918 Cuse and Pitt are the best two teams in the East. Orangemen won the rest of their schedule 141-6. Rain-soaked and muddy as hell. Stek misses a field goal from the 25, Knode fumbles at the Cuse 5 yard line. Second Q for some reason Cuse is passing and Cohn and Vick both get interceptions. Then Syracuse makes mistakes: offsides on a punt gives M good field position, and in the worst of the rain Stek kicks good from the 36. Next Cuse drive they get a roughing and Stek’s kick is good from the 35. 3rd quarter Stek misses from the 32, Vick gets another INT and so does Knode. M gets to the 14 and Stek makes it 9-0. Later on Stek intercepts and runs it in for a TD: 15-0, misses his own XP. Henry Bullion of the Freep: One man stood above all the rest in this sparkling triumph of the Wolverines. They'll be singing the praises of Steketee long after he trods the campus for the last time. All of the points assembled by Michigan are attributed to the educated toe and agility of Yost's brilliant fullback." MICHIGAN AGRICULTURAL (MSU) AGGIES 21-6Nov 23, 1918 Classic M-MSU battle where Michigan held won the battle in the trenches while MSU had some electric play from the backfield. About 15k crowded into Ferry Field (Yost: we need a new building). MSU is coming off a win over Knute Rockne’s (first) Notre Dame in East Lansing behind their new HC George Gauthier and their star African-American running back Harry Graves. Both bands played before the game and took so long it was getting dark. Coaches decided to skip halftime to keep things moving. Michigan’s got a solid 21-0 lead built up after their first drive of the 2nd half and go into cruise mode. MSC scores the only points on Michigan late because it’s so dark out at the end of the 4th quarter that they throw a pass and Michigan doesn’t know the guy’s there. ONLY points scored on M all season. Bullion in the Freep: "M.A.C.'s defeat is nothing for her to be ashamed of. It simply was a case of a better-conditioned and smarter eleven overpowering another that, though it lacked nothing in the way of fight that its enemy possessed, failed to cope with the superior knowledge of the game that was Michigan's by right of judgment and the attending conditions." Defeated with Dignity! 5. THE GAME AND CLAIMIN' SHIPS (starts at 1:44:48) State of the Rivalry: Michigan first played them in 1897 and made OSU an annual game starting the year before Yost. Ohio State wasn’t in the conference yet so they were a nonconference annual rival from 1900-1906 and we just kept playing every year after that until 1912, when OSU joined the Big Ten and had to break it off (also broke off their original EoY rival, Kenyon College). At this point Michigan had a 13-0-2 series lead. So this game was M-OSU back together again, and placed at the end of the year. It’s warming up but it’s not THE rivalry yet. OSU: No Chic Harley (war) who was one of the biggest stars in the game in 1916-’17 and 1919 (Yost asked to personally congratulate Harley after the 1919 game). The character in Leatherheads was loosely based on Harley, who was a player-part owner of the Bears. Chic lived a sad life after. Michigan and Illinois didn’t play each other but OSU was a common opponent so beating the 13-0 mark by Illinois was the goal. Conditions were wet and slippery due to rain all morning. Stek got into a punt-a-thon with OSU’s Rife. 3rd Quarter Knode finally breaks the tie with a 30-yard TD run but while they’re celebrating a linesman FROM THE WRONG SIDE overrules the guy who was over the play and says no TD. Typical. 0-0 tie in the 4th quarter: 73-yard punt by Stek “stuck fast in the mud” on the OSU 2. Next punt Rife get blocked by Goetz. Bullion in the Freep: "The pass from center was perfect and there seemed to be no fear that Rife would not get it away. But Goetz, one man who has starred in every game the Maize and Blue played this year, shattered the line and rammed the Buckeye punter. Leather and Goetz collided and the pigskin went bounding away with Goetz in hot pursuit. Three scarlet-robed athletes tried to block Goetz's path to the ball, but he thrust them aside and went to earth with it just as his rivals in the race catapulted themselves at the leather. Later Stek faked an edge run and popped it to Dunne for a TD pass. Big Ten Champs?  Illinois and Purdue were also undefeated in B1G play: Illinois’s AD tries to claim the title with 4 wins (Iowa, at Wisconsin, Ohio State, at Chicago) to Michigan’s two (Chi and OSU). Illini try to use their blowout over Chicago, M stands on a road win at Columbus. Illinois by the way has two 7-0 October losses to Great Lakes Navy and Chicago Naval Reserve--both All Star teams. Maybe it’s a good thing M’s games were canceled? National Champs? Pitt went 4-0 under Pop Warner but then lost to the Cleveland Naval Reserve on 11/30, 10-9. They claim the 4th Q was extended to allow the cadets to take the lead. It ended Pop’s 30-game winning streak. -------------------------------------------- MUSIC: "A Good man Is Hard to Find"—Eddie Green "Over There"—George M. Happy New Year! Andy Behrens and Dalton Del Don are back to discuss all things NBA in the first 2020 episode of the fantasy basketball podcast.First up, Andy and Dalton discuss the legacy of David Stern and his 30-year career as NBA commissioner. (03:30)And in this week’s Starting Five, Andy and Dalton run down the five biggest storylines of the fantasy week:1) Minnesota Timberwolves Center Karl-Anthony Towns, who entered the season having missed five games in his *entire* career, has now missed eight straight games. He’s reportedly ramping up on-court work but according to Ethan Strauss of The Athletic, he’s unhappy in Minnesota. He’s also in the first year of a five-year contract. Hopefully, you were able to pick up Gorgui Dieng. (06:46)2) Dallas Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis will miss his second game in a row with a knee injury on Thursday night. Though the injury does not involve his surgically-repaired knee, there's still cause for concern. "There's no timetable," Rick Carlisle said on Tuesday. "We'll see." Maxi Kleber is worth a pickup while the Unicorn's status is up in the air. (10:54)3) Andy and Dalton discuss first-half busts like Zion Williamson, Blake Griffin, and Mike Conley, and whether there's hope for a turnaround. (12:47)4) The New York Knicks are a blistering 6-6 under new head coach Mike Miller, having won three straight. Julius Randle put up a monster game on Wednesday night: 22 points (8-of-15 FGs, 3-of-4 FTs), 13 REB, 3 AST, 3 threes, one steal, one block in Wednesday's win vs. the Blazers. Mitchell Robinson had his own big game with 11-11 FG, including a crazy alley-oop. (16:21)5) We are theoretically in trade season, though nothing too exciting has happened yet. Dalton and Andy throw out some hypothetical trades that would benefit NBA and fantasy teams alike. (18:37)[Yahoo Sportsbook powered by BetMGM: Deposit $10, Get $100 in Free Bets. NJ only. 21+. Terms apply]Next up, Dalton runs through his pickups of the week, including Gorgui Dieng, Damion Lee, Alec Burks, Ky Bowman, and Jordan McRae. (22:08). And Andy and Dalton engage in some All-Decade talk. They give their picks for the all-decade first & second teams, as well as some awards we'd like to see, like best one-hit-wonder, biggest bust, best rookie season, and the biggest what ifs of the decade. Oklahoma City fans, you might want to skip that last one. (25:17)And we wrap up the show with In Case You Missed It. ICYMI this week, some great writing on the career of David Stern, like David Aldridge’s obit on David Stern, along with Vincent Goodwill’s piece and Ben Rohrbach’s.Please remember to rate, review and subscribe on your podcast provider of choice and send us your questions for future episodes on Twitter @YahooFantasy.Follow Dalton @daltondeldonFollow Andy

The Pittsburgh Steelers end the 2019 season with a surprising 8-8 record, losing their final contest to the Baltimore Ravens 28-10 in an east coast tsunami. The lack of offensive fire-power was evidenced by the offensive output, but moreover, the offensive anemia served the ball up at inopportune times to the Ravens at choice field positions. Worse, punting from the Steelers 19 yard line, Jordan Berry fumbled a snap which Ravens Chris Board pounced on in the end one for another TD. The defense held the Dirty Birds to one TD, but was gashed by 223 on the ground, leading to four FGs.Alas, even a victory would have meant a one-way ticket home as Houston succumbed to the Titans as they rested their starters, handing Tennessee the final AFC wild card spot.We discuss bright spots on offense - the emergence of Diontae Johnson and James Washington’s continued ascent. What didn’t go right? We delve into Randy Fichtner’s role in formulating a strategy to put the young skill position players in a position to succeed. Will he be back next year? The future, however, shines brightly for the defense. TJ Watt is a clear contender for defensive player of the year. He and Bud Dupree dominated offensive backfields more than any duo since James Harrison and Lamar Woodley. The secondary is as close to lock-down as any in the NFL with the newly acquired Minkah Fitzpatrick and Steven Nelson being coupled with Joe Haden. Sadly, several players enter free agency and we discuss the likelihood of retaining Bud and Javon Hargrave. What are our greatest needs for next year, given free agency on both sides of the ball? Running back? Tight end? OLB? QB?!!!

Seth and Dr. Sap bring you a podcast about Michigan's greatest teams. This episode: the season that began in the playoffs and ended as well as it could have. Our special guest: Mark Messner! Previously: 1901, 1925, 1932, 1947, 1950, 1964, 1976, 1980, 1999 THE SPONSOR: It is sponsored by HomeSure Lending. If you're buying or refinancing your home, this is the guy to talk to. He'll work on your loan directly and walk you through a process that can get really confusing really fast. I used him. Brian used him. Everyone else who used him is glad they did. [Description, diagrams, some video after the JUMP] -------------------------------------------- 1. THE EIGHTIES (starts at 1:00) VCRs, Cable TV, and the golden age of Independents. Michigan is coming off a horrible 1987 with ALL the turnovers, has a quarterback controversy, and is sharing Bo with his Athletic Director duties. Meanwhile the cheating is rampant, the recruiting is national, and Ohio State just dumped their 9 wins a year coach for the hot new thing because John Cooper had just beaten Michigan in a bowl game. 2. THE TEAM THE TEAM THE TEAM (starts at 26:04) Bo's first nationally recruited team. The quarterback panic of 1984 leads to a class of five guys, Taylor the steady hand, Brown the super talent. Speed with Tony Boles and nobody can tackle Leroy Hoard. Return two smallish speedsters outside in Kolesar and Calloway, with leaping Greg McMurtry pushing his way into the lineup. Two big blocking tight ends with surprising receiving ability. And then that line: All-Americans John Vitale and Mike Husar, huge Greg Skrepenak and Tom Dohring, and a young Dean Dingman. Defense was a 5-2 that now called itself a 3-4 because it was easier to recruit linebackers than ends. Messner is now the leader inside. They're little but they get after it. J.J. Grant is a tackling machine, Erick Anderson displaces John Milligan, who's a better cover linebacker. Bobby Abrams and Alex Marshall were both Uche types but taller. They trusted big David Arnold at strongside cornerback but never felt comfortable with converted running back David Key and Todd Plate at weakside, with Tony Mitchell coming on as a nickel. Great talent at safety with Tripp Welborne and Vada Murray, but no depth. Mike Gillette assumes both kicking and punting duties, occasionally it seemed to be too much. 3. THE GAMES wsg MARK MESSNER (starts at 50:00) We meet Mark and go back through his Michigan career. Start the season vs #1 and #2 in the nation: (2012) yikes! Could have beaten them both. L 19-17 @ Notre Dame (national champs) ND gets the first KO return TD, Boles 59-yard KO return, Gillette 48-yard attempt wide right :( L 31-30 to Defending Nat Champs Miami Fake to Boles who dives over the pile and they all believe it, Michael Taylor turned loose, was playing unconscious . Tip off Miami 43 and Vada Murray intercepts. Michigan up 30-17 with 7 minutes to play, but then…ungh. Miami goes Tempo: TD, then next drive two M defenders run into each other and Miami goes all the way. Miami gets the onside kick, kicks GW field goal. W 19-9 vs Wake Forest Offense derping around. Wake takes a 3-0 lead in 2nd Q. Tripp Welborne drifts off coverage and intercepts Tony Boles on the edge. Messner safety! These are all Seth's memories because Messner is like "We played Wake Forest?" W 62-14 @ Wisconsin Tony Boles off to the races on the first play from scrimmage, grab 20-0 lead on an option pitch to him, and then he outraces everyone again to make it 34-0. “Seems like we’ve been on that field a couple of days.” W 17-3 vs Michigan State (defending B10 champs) State returned most of their defense from the Rose Bowl team a year before, but LOST TO RUTGERS and comes into this game winless. 10-0 lead at halftime and then Taylor throws a pick near-six (5 yard line) and M has a goal line stand Gillette punt blocked and returned for a TD but MSU offsides (Sparty No!) THE GILLETTE FAKE PUNT! 40 terrifying yard. T 17-17 @ Iowa Iowa “injuries” are the story all season but they’re all back. Iowa ran Harbaugh’s drop-and-draw. Iowa fans are deafening, Bo is livid at the ref because they called a delay of game on Taylor after Taylor wanted refs to quiet the crowd. Bo got a 15-yard penalty “called him a bad name.” Michigan scored anyways. Corner to Kolesar ties it up, Michigan has come back. M at the Iowa 1 yard line, Tracy Williams fumbles on the 1. “If had occurred later on in the season, Leroy Hoard would have had the ball.” W 31-6 Indiana (Big Ten title contenders) Leroy Hoard comes through in practice. Bo was yelling at the defense because they were doing a lousy job tackling him. Then it struck him a lot of defenses were having that problem. Hoard takes the first series for a long TD McMurtry reverse to Calloway. W 52-7 @NWestern Just up 17-7 and Bo was furious at halftime. Kolesar in the early 2nd half long return, blowout is on. End around to Kolesar too. W 22-7 Minnesota Rainy miserable day. First possession Taylor throws an INT and breaks collarbone. Demetrius Brown (16 interceptions in 1987). Ball is wet. It’s cold. So they went conservative. Gillette gets 5 FGs in the pouring rain. Messner held the jug: "THAT was cool!" W 38-9 Illinois Illini had upset IU so this is for the Big Ten championship! Had a good D, good passing QB, good RB, shit OL Fake punt to Erick Anderson works. Bo goes to his old 1969 Wishbones and grinds them down. W 34-31 Ohio State Welcome Cooper Era. Bo thought M was lucky to keep OSU off the board in 1st half. Gillette 56-yarder before the half. Defense struggled in the 2nd half but Leroy Hoard behind Dingman and Dohring takes back the lead. OSU up again, kicks off to Kolesar who takes it to the OSU 41->62 yard return. Down 31-27, Brown lobs to Kolesar who is Jeremy Gallon. At about 48:50 here: “There is no Co.” 4. ROSE BOWL and WRAP (starts at 1:35:49) When Bo watched film on them he thought they had a great defense but Michigan did things well that USC . USC is a big, cumbersome team at the tackles, Bo’s quick little defenders (eg Messner). M playing crappy to start, missed 2 field goals. Rodney Peete getting outside on them. Safeties come down against the run. Kolesar escapes a big TFL and turns it into a 16-yard gain. USC fumble, M goes down and goes up 15-14. Hoard takes over, big run, coverts a 4th and goal. Milligan game-sealing INT. So what are they? 1980? The reason Seth became a big Michigan fan? -------------------------------------------- MUSIC: "Don't Believe the Hype"—Public Enemy "Teenage Riot"—Sonic Youth "Tribute"—The Pasadenas “Across 110th Street” THE USUAL LINKS Helpful iTunes subscribe link General podcast feed link What's with the theme music?

Our other sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Peak Wealth Management, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Michigan Law Grad, Human Element, The Phil Klein Insurance Group, Perrin Brewing, and The Athletic -------------------------------------------- 1. The Offense starts at 1:00 Start with the stupid—when Giles Jackson wasn't initially ruled down on his kickoff return we felt in for it. Announcers, Tom Allen's fire-up speech don't help. The Whop for Hawkins trade. First time one of the fearsome foursome receiver recruiting class got over 100 yards(!!!). Nico Collins DPI magnetism. Transition period didn't need to not do that. Things that don't happen anymore: confusion before a snap, timeouts because they're disorganized, running things that don't have a counter. Good downfield adjustments by the young slots. Who can stand up to these receivers? Wheel route to Giles Jackson: looks exactly like Michigan's RPO game. Interior OL: best Brian's ever graded. 2. The Defense starts at 32:19 Indiana's scripted drive worked with those TE flare screens. Phantom DPI on Lavert Hill worked, Ambry and Lavert feel very differently in run defense: note how Indiana played a screen from trap coverage on that TFL versus how Hill stopped and the guy got around him. Then: shutdown time. Kemp and Hutchinson caused the pop-up that Dax Hill fielded. He's alright that guy, whose first start is broken down. He did fail to switch on one rub route. Dwumfour's limited role. The Uche idea: I believe in not trying to run a jet-around at the guy who immediately steps upfield. Lane integrity versus scrambles: a rare breakdown, next time Ramsey got sacked. McGrone missed a tackle on the TD. PI business: first play is horrible, second one is PI, holding behind the LOS: that's never been called before, but if the ball's in the air it's not defensive holding because—duh—the guy is basically a running back. 3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, Game Theory, and Hoops starts at 51:45 Do you know how to football? Yep, you play until the whistle! Last IU guy prevented what was going to be a 50-yard return. Wildcat snap on 3rd and 3 (unless you're running it twice?). Screwed up end of the half against IU again! Two-point conversion: legitimate tactical decision. Hart contributed to the Dumb Indiana Feeling with his first two very weak punts. Indiana's live stats were very drunk. Speaking of very drunk: 86 possessions against Houston Baptist! Everyone's pulling out the record books at halftime. Bajema! X went left! Nunez: ~~~~~~euh, went 2/8 but most of those shots looked good. His defense…euh. Castleton looked nice, got up and down the floor well, more comfortable on defense. British student announcer was offended by HouBap shots; Brian was offended by Dragon Ball Z. Everyone but Wilson scored. 4. Around the Big Ten wsg Jamie Mac starts at 1:14:06 Iowa-Illinois: too depressed to yell BIG TEN! Illinois forced a lot of FGs, Peters 4 YPA, Illinois lives off turnovers and died by the TO. One was a flea flicker INT. They have the Maryland offense of run defenses. Wisconsin-Purdue: Jonathan Taylor rampant. Backup kicker hit a 62-yard field goal (woulda been good from 62.3), breaking a record from the 19th century. Rutgers 140 yards of offense, MSU gets 5.1 YPP versus Rutgers. Rode Elijah Collins, and he got stuffed twice on 4th and 1. Devontae Dobbs rotated with 3 other guys at LT: roster mismanagement on the tackles is on the list of things wrong with MSU. Maryland played four quarterbacks against Nebraska—none had a pick (don't forget the six sacks though). Three yards short of a passing Rutger. Locksley-Gattis debate: resolved. Northwestern Rutger'd themselves by getting a lead (2-0) while having negative yards. Penn State evisceration (5 YPP) covered up by OSU fumbles. Penn State's rushing defense absolutely destroyed.

In the opening take, Lee tries to figure out what kind of Texas Tech team OU just beat. Then Grant joins to talk briefly about being the bad guy of the show according to some of the iTunes reviews we've gotten (2:30). Grant says the ceiling of this OU team is quite high (4:55) while Lee continues to be impressed with OU's offensive explosiveness and is happy with the way the Sooners' defense finished off Texas Tech (6:20). Two straight games without a garbage touchdown and OU's holding teams to FGs in the red zone as opposed to TDs (8:50). Kenneth Murray had some bold words about OU's defense after the win (11:00). So, why did Jackson Tyner start that game for Tech (14:50)? Lincoln Riley's best soundbite after the game revolved around playing fast defense (17:30). Jaden Davis continues to impress, while the pass defense in general is still sharp (23:30). Let's talk Trejan Bridges playing Nickel (25:45). Neville Gallimore's effort led to a forced fumble and a takeaway. Which led Alex Grinch to say something awesome about his defense's effort (29:40). Sure, there were some negatives defensively. Brendan Radley-Hiles still has a problem with tackling and OU sometimes has troubles holding the edge (32:20). CeeDee Lamb broke out in a big way. Have fun in the NFL big guy (36:05). Adrian Ealy missed the game, Bray Walker got his first start and Ian McIver continues to get a bunch of snaps at center (38:15). Pretty lucky that Kennedy Brooks isn't severely injured after taking a cheap shot (42:15). Rhamondre Stevenson is fun to watch and legitimately looks like Jamaal Charles (44:30). Spencer Rattler vs Tanner Mordecai doesn't seem to be very much of a competition right now (46:40). Gabe Brkic handled the kicking duties quite nicely (49:00) and we finish up with 3-word reviews (50:00). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonNews9
