The Chris Voss Show Podcast - As a City on a Hill: The Story of America's Most Famous Lay Sermon by Daniel T. Rodgers Daniel Rodgers Webpage How an obscure Puritan sermon came to be seen as a founding document of American identity and exceptionalism “For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill,” John Winthrop warned his fellow Puritans at New England’s founding in 1630. More than three centuries later, Ronald Reagan remade that passage into a timeless celebration of American promise. How were Winthrop’s long-forgotten words reinvented as a central statement of American identity and exceptionalism? In As a City on a Hill, leading American intellectual historian Daniel Rodgers tells the surprising story of one of the most celebrated documents in the canon of the American idea. In doing so, he brings to life the ideas Winthrop’s text carried in its own time and the sharply different yearnings that have been attributed to it since. As a City on a Hill shows how much more malleable, more saturated with vulnerability, and less distinctly American Winthrop’s “Model of Christian Charity” was than the document that twentieth-century Americans invented. Across almost four centuries, Rodgers traces striking shifts in the meaning of Winthrop’s words―from Winthrop’s own anxious reckoning with the scrutiny of the world, through Abraham Lincoln’s haunting reference to this “almost chosen people,” to the “city on a hill” that African Americans hoped to construct in Liberia, to the era of Donald Trump. As a City on a Hill reveals the circuitous, unexpected ways Winthrop’s words came to lodge in American consciousness. At the same time, the book offers a probing reflection on how nationalism encourages the invention of “timeless” texts to straighten out the crooked realities of the past. Dan Rodgers is the Henry Charles Lea Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University. He is a prize-winning teacher and the author of six prize-winning books on the history of American ideas, arguments, assumptions, and culture. His Age of Fracture, which won the coveted Bancroft Prize in American history in 2012, not only helped put the word fracture on the map as a description of the last forty years of American history but showed how the very idea of “society” began to fall apart after the 1970s. His latest book, As a City on a Hill, available in paperback this fall, hones in on the history of one of the most iconic phrases in recent American politics: the claim that ever since their beginning Americans knew that they were destined to be a model to the world. The book uncovers the myths behind that assumption. It shows how a 17th century document’s words were lost, how they were found again, and how they were filled with radically new meanings. Finally, and most importantly, it asks what the phrase “city on a hill” ought to mean for us now.

As Aston Villa announce their intention to defer 25% of first team player wages for four months, the response of European leagues to the Convid pandemic increasingly shine a spot light on the Premier League's plans to try and end the 2019/20 season. On top of the Villa news of the club's reaction to the Covid crisis and Villa player end of contract issues, MOMS takes an in-depth look at the impact of the global pandemic on football and the possibilities left open to the Premier League, and how they can possibility bring the curtain down on the 2019/20 season. When you get beat 14 consecutive times by a team, you swiftly begin to despise them. It was a vital win for Aston Villa against Newcastle United at Villa Park. Villa's Head Coach Dean Smith's reward was a new four-year contract for dispatching his predecessor Steve Bruce. After three defeats, the three points will give the club a lift going into a tough month of fixtures.Meanwhile, while there was good news for football supporters on the prospect of standing returning to English football's top tiers, there was whiff of a threat to Premier League supporter's civil liberties. Aston Villa finally lifted the curse of the not being able to beat 10-men, at their third attempt, as they overcame further VAR frustration, after Jack Grealish inspired his team to an injury-time victory against Brighton.David, Dan & Chris discuss the Villa captain's most impressive display so far this season, as well as deconstruct VAR and shed some light on what the club has to say about it, based on the season, so far. The Brighton game at Villa Park is also broken down, as are the various levels of performances across the Villa team. Also, we look at Ajax fan's master plan for their trip to Chelsea, which they're banned from. The loop hole that potentially allows 21,000 fans to watch Wolves away game at ŠK Slovan Bratislava, that's meant to be behind closed doors. Plus, this week's parliamentary committee on football administration, that raised some eyebrows to the way the bodies that run the game operate.Link to see stream of Parliamentary Committee on Football Adminstration - https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/789226a0-609a-4ab3-bd43-d93ef941bac9There's also the return of 'Twitter With Tony' and a Scot Hogan Touch Count Challenge, as Villa's loanee to the Potters begins to sample victory.EnjoyUTVFurther reading - Five Reasons to be Cheerful as Villa FansSUPPORT THE SHOWIf you want the podcast show to continue and grow in the 2019/20 season and to be more frequent, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron. It wasn't quite panic stations yet, but being in the bottom three of the Premier League table was fast becoming a bad look. Cue a trip to Carrow Road, where Norwich City had beaten the champions, and five goals later, Villa have a spring in their step.We look back at Villa's best win and performance of the season so far, and their five top draw goals. Plus, pinpoint what transformed Villa and gave them the extra spark against the Canaries. Beyond the glory on the pitch, we also look at the Villa player song sung on the away concourse that offered up three unfortunate racial slurs.Elsewhere, the government finally issue their report on standing in football stadiums and Iranian female football fans get some good news after pressure by FIFA.One word of advice for Hogan Touch Count fans, hang on to the post-credit sequence.Enjoy!UTVSUPPORT THE SHOWIf you want the podcast show to continue and grow in the 2019/20 season and to be more frequent, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron. Another game, another VAR incident, another loss of points - so far, the 2019/20 Premier League season has thrown up a predictable pattern for Aston Villa, after twice leading against Burnley at Villa Park, they finished winless again. Are Dean Smith's tactical insights matching up with his team selections? What was Wesley doing playing dead on the Villa Park pitch? Is Villa's footballing intelligence letting them down? And did, what appears to be the insignificant selection of having Neil Taylor on the bench instead of Kortney Hause, cost Villa points?David, Dan and Chris discuss these matters and many more in the Villa-verse, plus look at the recent strange events at Derby County, Wimbledon and Yeovil Town.Plus, there's the return of the Scott Hogan Touch Count Meter, which features an epic battle, as two touch count masterminds go head-to-head.Enjoy!UTVSUPPORT THE SHOWIf you want the podcast show to continue and grow in the 2019/20 season and to be more frequent, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron. Frustration builds for a competitive Aston Villa side that should have picked up more wins than just one from their six league games so far. Managing to lose against Arsenal, after being 1-0 up and a man up at half-time, is their most worrisome effort yet.David, Dan and Chris look back at events at the Emirates Stadium and try to process what had begun as Villa's most impressive performance this season to the team's most spectacular collapse. We look at the questions of in-game management and why it went wrong for Villa, plus look at the impact (or lack of) of certain Villa players. We also grade Jack Grealish's season so far.Beyond the Villa-verse we travel to India...from Oxford, to take a look at the curious case of Kashif Siddiqi and his move to Real Kashmir, we also discuss the Blues fine from the Jack Grealish incident of last season, before flagging up the rise of a young Norwegian giant taking the Champions League by storm. Oh, and there's another update from our Iranian news desk.Enjoy!UTVSUPPORT THE SHOWIf you want the podcast show to continue and grow in the 2019/2020 season and to be more frequent, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron. Tell Me Why I Don't Like Mondays...Villa continued their poor Monday night form of recent years, as they frustrated themselves in drawing 0-0 with a 10-men West Ham side that mustered just one shot on target. A missed opportunity for the home side.Looking back at the Hammers' game, the show analyses what's holding back a team, that has plenty of effort and on-point defensive organisation, yet should have more points on the board for their endeavours. Will certain players step-up? Should we be concerned?Outside the Villa-verse, David, Dan and Chris look at the bizarre summer transfer window of former Leicester City Premier League winner Shinji Okazaki, more football high-jinx in Iran and the emergence of Micah Richards in his new career. There's also something of a rant about ex-Lincoln City boss Danny Crowley and his move to Huddersfield Town.So check out the podcast that was selected by Apple as part of their first 'Football Fans' curated collection list.Enjoy!UTVSUPPORT THE SHOWIf you want the podcast show to continue and grow in the 2019/2020 season and to be more frequent, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron. As Aston Villa find out that one Premier League referee is certainly no friend of their's, we reflect back to Villa's start to the season and events at Crystal Palace and beyond. On top of VAR problems, English football has other issues as Bury vanish from the football league. We also look to the USA and Iran for other football stories.Back in the Villa-verse we question Douglas Luiz's role in the team and Villa's early season teething problems. And then there's an epic Scott Hogan Touch Count Meter battle, proudly sponsored by the Warwickshire Gin CompanyPlus, as always, lots, lots more.UTVEnjoy!SUPPORT THE SHOWIf you want the podcast show to continue and grow in the 2019/2020 season and to be more frequent, please do support the show by becoming a MOMS Patron.
