This week we chat with filmmaker, producer, composer, writer, author...this guy's done it all...John Harrison. From working with George Romero on everything from Creepshow and Dawn of the Dead to Tales from the Darkside to the Dune miniseries to his Netflix series Residue...he's done it all. He even directed Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, which was Andrew LaSane's Scarred for Life pick, which is one of Terry's favorite movies. We chat about his long history in cinema; about how he started working with Romero to some insights into Tales from the Darkside. And we discuss his latest work, the novel Residue: Paramentals Rising, which is a sequel to the Netflix show. After learning about his horror history--including a memorable viewing of Night of the Living Dead--we find out why The Haunting terrified him as a twelve year old. John references an article written by Anthony McKay in Little Shoppe of Horrors, which can be ordered here. You can find Residue: Paramentals Rising wherever you buy your books or at WordFire Press. You can follow John on his website or Instagram and Facebook.Follow Mary Beth, Terry and the Podcast on Bluesky. Recently T came across a conversation on Twitter surrounding a specific segment and scene from Tales from the Darkside: The Movie. This specific scene from the "Lover's Vow" segment of the movie was one of the earliest scares that T can remember back to and continuing his "Growing Up With" series, decided it was a story worth telling! #talesfromthedarkside #gargoyles #jamesremar #dexter #dexterresurrection #dexternewblood #dexteroriginalsin #mortalkombat #raiden #talesfromthecrypt #seaworld

Holly wanders into an underworld just as real as ours, but not as brightly lit with Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990). The spiritual third Creepshow movie boasts stories by George Romero, Stephen King, and Arthur Conan Doyle, and includes mummies, cats from hell, and lovetorn gargoyles.
Stephen King Month 2.0 continues on The Blind Rage Podcast! For week two, we're taking a look at the 1990 anthology TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE, a spinoff of the 1980s television series, featuring a stacked cast of well-knowns, including: Christian Slater, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, William Hickey, and legendary rock star Debbie Harry. A young Matthew Lawrence stars as Timmy, a neighborhood kid who's been abducted by a suburban housewife (Harry), who just happens to be a witch. And a cannibal with a taste for children. The only way Timmy can prevent her from cooking and eating him is by reading her stories from a massive tome, which holds dozens of twisted yarns. Will Timmy keep his captor distracted long enough to devise a plan to escape? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blindragepod/message
On this episode, continuing with my anthology April series with Tales From the Darkside: The Movie (1990). What does a tiny prisoner, a wicked witch, a mummy, a cat from Hell and a lover's vow have in common? They all are a part of the Darkside. Let me hold your hand in the dark and tell you why this is one of my favorite horror anthologies. The artist on my podcast playlist is DMX. Synopsis This movie, directed by John Harrison, is based off the TV series of the same name. It follows a wraparound story about a kid that is going to be cooked by a woman who kidnapped him, and he tries to get out of it by telling her stories from the titular book. This movie is an anthology, with one wraparound story and three tales from the darkside, filled with frights, fun, blood, and gore. Review of Tales From the Darkside: The Movie This movie is very 1990. The style, the gore remind me of late 80s early 90s horror. I have never seen the TV show, but I can see how this film could be nostalgic to those who grew up in the 80s and had a knack for horror movies. It's always a hit or a miss when a TV show becomes a movie, but in this case, I think it is a romp. It's fun, the gore is good, but it's not very scary. With a 93 minute runtime and a star studded cast, I don't think you could go very wrong with this movie. With all anthologies though, there are going to be stories within the film that are not very good, and this movie is no exception. All in all, it is a fun time. I didn't hate it. If it wasn't so predictable, I would give it a higher score, but it's very average and that is okay sometimes. We don't wanna watch the best movie of all time every single day. Score 5/10

Spinning off from the TV show of the same name (itself a spin-off of the 1982 film Creepshow), Tales From The Darkside: The Movie is a horror anthology movie produced by George Romero, directed by John Harrison, and featuring performances by Steve Buscemi, Christian Slater, Deborah Harry, William Hickey, David Johansen, Rae Dawn Chong, James Remar, and (in her movie debut) Julianne Moore. Moderately successful at the box office, Tales From The Darkside: The Movie enjoyed a lengthy afterlife as a perennial on basic cable broadcasts and, alongside the TV program, has attracted a decently-sized fanbase among horror movie nerds. Ryan is joined by Cheryl and Sylvan for a discussion about this campy, enjoyable feature. Thematic topics in the discourse include the "mixed flavors" approach that's inherent to the anthology format, the movie's indirect roots in Japanese folklore, Tales From The Darkside's knack for giving talented actors their first big break, why puppets are better than CGI every time, and why this movie would've been better if Patrick Swayze was in it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support

We say “Happy Halloween” with our now-traditional foray into a horror anthology film, this time the often-underrated Tales From the Darkside: The Movie. Join us for a fun ride and a revisit to this film. With hosts Candy the Final Girl and Shawnofthedead, Erica Wright, Robb “The Cinema Drunkie” Antequera, and special guest Patrick.
This week on our annotated deep dive, The Cultists Present 'Tales from the Darkside - The Movie' (1990). The year was 1983 when George Romero, inspired by the EC comics of the 1950s such as "The Vault" and "Tales from the Crypt", pitched a humble horror TV anthology that would harken back to the golden age of pulp fiction. Seven years, four seasons, and a major motion picture later, Tales has accrued its own fanbase throughout time, and yet this film remains relatively obscure considering its roster. With attached names like George Romero, Steven King, Donald Rubinstein, Christian Slater, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Mathew Lawrence, Debbie Harry (aka Blondie), David Johnson (aka "Buster Poindexter"), Michael McDowell (the dude who wrote Beetlejuice), and even Arthur Conan Doyle, this film is a zany time capsule of 20th century horror. From Debbie Harry's chipper and casual cannibalism, to Christian Slater's electric mummy carving mania, to cats on a vengeance spree from hell, "Tales" is above all else simply a whole lot of fun. Deep Dives include: the production's major players (from Romero, to Slater, to King); the film's source materials, including: Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lot 249," Steven King's "Cat from Hell," Lafcadio Hearn's "Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things," and "Tales From the Darkside" (1983) (the TV show); The British “Egyptomania” of the late 1800s; the origin of the monstrous mummy in Mummy fiction; the three kingdoms of Ancient Egypt and the process of mummification; Zuni fetishes and the semantic evolution of “Fetish/Fetishism”; the editing techniques of 1940s action-adventures; the glory of theatrical scrims; the Japanese folklore of ghostly ice women; the mathematics of cannibalism; and whether champagne is really what you want to pair with cooked children.
