What if American culture isn't collapsing because of crusading secularists? What if it's failing because many leading Christians identify more with secular elites than with their fellow believers and the Bible?Going beyond critique, John Wood's book identifies root causes and - most crucially- offers practical tips and strategies you can use to help your family, church, and community stand for truth. Dr. John G. West Dr. John West is Vice President and a Senior Fellow at the Seattle-based Discovery Institute, where he also serves as Managing Director of the Institute's Center for Science & Culture, which he co-founded with philosopher of science Stephen Meyer in 1996. His current research examines the impact of science and “scientism” on public policy and culture. His other areas of expertise include constitutional law, American government and institutions, and religion and politics.Dr. West was previously an Associate Professor of Political Science at Seattle Pacific University where he chaired the Department of Political Science and Geography, and he has taught political science and history courses at California State University, San Bernardino and Azusa Pacific University. From 1986-1989, Dr. West served as Managing Editor of Public Research, Syndicated, which distributed essays on public affairs to more than 700 daily and weekly newspapers.Dr. West has written or edited thirteen books, including most recently Stockholm Syndrome Christianity, Darwin Day in America: How Our Politics and Culture Have Been Dehumanized in the Name of Science, The Magician's Twin: C.S. In the lecture, delivered at the Dallas Conference on Science & Faith, West explores how Darwin's purely materialistic theory of evolution has drained meaning from nature, undercut the idea of inherent human dignity, and fueled the rise of scientific racism in the twentieth century. West is author of Darwin Day in America: How Our Politics and Culture Have Been Dehumanized in the Name of Science. It's that time of year again! This time round, I thought I'd put Charles Darwin's life into a little bit of historical context. This is because I imagine most people have a stereotypical image of him in their heads as a model Victorian gentleman. However, his life saw quite a few other historical events that wouldn't really spring to mind. For instance, would it have occurred to you that Darwin witnessed the closing years of the Napoleonic Wars? So, in honour of Darwin's birthday, let's explore a few of the events in his life it might not occur to you he witnessed... On this ID the Future from the vault, Casey Luskin presents his piece from U.S. News and World Report about a tension at the heart of that curious annual celebration, Darwin Day (February 12). Luskin describes how many contemporary evolutionists lionize Charles Darwin even while rejecting his call for academic freedom and intellectual openness in the debate over evolutionary theory. Luskin recounts an incident where Ben Stein, star of Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, was himself “expelled” from the University of Vermont due to his contrarian views on modern Darwinism. We kick off our episode with a goofy question: If you could attend a PD workshop run by any person (scientist, author, teacher, etc) whose workshop would you want to attend? - Joining us from Missouri is Kelly Kluthe: Maybe because yesterday was Darwin Day, but I'm going with the obvious Charles Darwin pick. - Joining us from Texas is Lee Ferguson: I'll go with Rudolf Virchow, because I have to know, is that story about you giving that politician dude a worm-infested sausage and daring him to eat it true? Also, I think it would be cool to learn from Sean Carroll. - Joining us from Colorado is Hannah Hathaway: Just because I want to meet and chat with this person, I'll go with Ira Flatow. - Aaron: Terry Gross from Fresh Air or Rosalind Franklin, Questions We Discuss: - What have you missed most about face-to-face PD over the past 2 years? - Have you had any really good PD through remote platforms over the past 2 years? - Do you have any PD plans in the coming months? Do you think you will have face-to-face PD anytime soon? Credits: Please subscribe to Life of the school on your podcast player of choice! From DailyPodcastPractice.com According to NationalToday.com, today is Darwin Day, the day we celebrate Charles Darwin's work and science in general. And we celebrate it today because this is Chuck's birthday. On this day in 1733, The British colony of Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe, at the site of Savannah. Also born on this day in 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, the 16th President of the United States of ‘Merica, Abraham Lincoln. Two thoughts from Charles Darwin. First, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change, that lives within the means available and works co-operatively against common threats.” and then this second quote, “Building a better mousetrap merely results in smarter mice.”
