DYS is a legendary Boston hardcore band, and the record that vaunted them into iconic status is 1983's Brotherhood. In 2023, the band celebrated the album's 40th anniversary and announced a reissue in cooperation with Bridge Nine Records. In this episode, bassist Johnathan Anastas discusses how the reissue came together and the pivot to using the proceeds to benefit vocalist Dave Smalley's medical fund.CLICK HERE TO SUPPORT DAVE SMALLEYMusic by:SpacedDYSBibIntro music by:Hot ZonePatreon: https://www.patreon.com/GettingitoutpodcastEmail: dan@gettingitout.netWebsite: http://gettingitout.net/Instagram: @getting_it_out_podcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/gettingitoutpodcastX: @GettingItOutPod Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/getting-it-out. Ride the cyclone and go for ALL with Ryan, Brant, and special guest Dave Smalley! . . . . YOU DON'T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don't know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don't know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). Keith sits down with Dave Smalley to discuss life and philosophy, discovering the hardcore scene in DC, the straight edge lifestyle, moving to Boston, forming DYS, the history of the band, almost signing with Elektra Records, the evolution of the scene in Boston at the time, a memorable Minor Threat gig that Dave attended, the end of DYS, joining Dag Nasty, recording Can I Say for Discord Records with Ian MacKaye producing, leaving the band to go to grad school in Israel, getting the call from Bill Stevenson to join ALL, life on the road with the band and their extensive touring schedule, leaving the band, the formation of Down By Law, signing with Epitaph records, Dave latest band Don't Sleep, their latest LP "See Change" and more. Guest Co-Host: Jason Camacho of Audio Karate. We discuss their new EP "A Show of Hands", some Audio Karate history, Jason's time away from music and more. Keith also pays tribute to his friend and musician Terrence Walsh who recently passed away.
Dave Smalley's been a punk rock fixture since the early ‘80s when he fronted DYS. Stints as the lead singer in Dag Nasty and ALL followed before the touring life caused him to reconsider what it meant to be in a band. In 1991, Smalley formed Down By Law, signed with Epitaph Records, and released six full length albums before the decade was done and another four in the 2000's with the most recent being 2021's Lonely Town. In addition to Down By Law, Smalley currently lists Dave Smalley & The Bandoleros and Don't Sleep on his punk rock resume, the latter of which is releasing their fourth album, See Change, on June 2. Hi everyone, Billy Amendola on Drum Channel with my guest Jim Bonfanti who is the drummer from one of my favorite bands and one of the forerunners of the 70s power pop sound, the Raspberries. Jim and I discuss his band experience in 1967, before the Raspberries, in a band initially called The Mods and transformed into The Choir. The band enjoyed success on the radio with a song called “It's Cold Outside,” which to many, is considered to be a forerunner of the garage rock sound era. In 1970, Bonfanti, Eric Carmen, Dave Smalley, and Wally Bryson formed the Raspberries in Cleveland, Ohio. Together they produced three albums, eight singles, and a top ten with “Go All The Way.” More hit songs followed with “Let's Pretend,” “I Wanna Be With You,” and “Tonight.” Producer Jimmy Ienner (and engineer Shelly Yakus) are responsible for all four Raspberries albums. The group disbanded in 1975 after a five-year run, and Eric Carmen went on to a successful career as a solo artist. In 2004, the original quartet reunited and undertook a well-received reunion tour and live album in 2005. Billy Amendola signing off till next time. Thank you, Jim. Thanks, everyone! Let's listen.
On this episode of the show, we are joined by Jonathan Anastas, bassist of one of the original Boston straight edge hardcore bands - DYS. Also a member of the "Boston Crew" and the original bassist of Slapshot, Anastas has deep roots in the early days of American Hardcore. We had a great talk about Jonathan's hardcore beginnings with Decadence, DYS' formation, break up and reformation, and how the band is still active, relevant, and more popular than ever with a new deal coming in 2023. If that is not enough, we were also treated with a new track from Jonathan's solo project DYSbanded, which features DYS bandmate and trendsetter Dave Smalley on lead vocals... Stick Figure Suicide was a punk rock band from Milltown, New Jersey. The band was formed in 1997, and were part of the emerging emo-punk rock scene of the late 1990s in the Northeast. Their music has been described as a mastery of "old-school hardcore moves and hyperspeed tempos" with clean, precise, over-driven guitars, and they are classified as a blend of fast and melodic hardcore-punk, with lyrics that are occasionally humorous. They drew comparison to the music of the hardcore punk band Minor Threat, and even Against All Authority. Maximumrocknroll described their songs on the Road Kill EP Split with Mohawk Barbie as "displaying some pretty good energy of their own with their early '90s style hardcore. On this episode, Mike and Josh set their sights on classroom management. They discuss how to look at managing your classroom like a punk show. Creating a scene and a crew that helps create the expectations with a hearty dose of DIY and that learns to self regulate because we are all in it together. Put on your seatbelts, kids. This episode we're taking a road trip up to Boston! Dischord 7.5 is SSD's "The Kids Will Have Their Say", a hands-down historic and game-changing record in early hXc. Al Barile expanded Ian's idea of straight edge from a personal statement into a social and political movement with this LP. We had the pleasure of talking to Nancy Barile (a key mover and shaker in both the early Philly and Boston scenes, who writes and speaks with passion and insight about those times), Al Barile crashes the interview in the best, most unexpected way possible, and we also briefly hear opinions on "Kids" from key figures in the Boston scene (Dave Smalley, Jonathan Anastas, and Mike Gitter)!

Here's Dave Smalley!! Dave has fronted many influential bands like DYS, Dag Nasty, ALL and Down By Law. He has carved out a little bit of punk rock history for himself. I called Dave up at his house in Virginia home and we talked about the new Down By Law tour that's happening in the spring of 2015. We also talked about punk rock and how our lives have forever been changed with an ethic that was instilled in us at an early age. We talk about mall cops as well.
