Entering the AL East in 1977 the Blue Jays did not always play inside. Like most expansion teams they started slowly but won a World Series (actually 2 back to back) 16 years after their founding. The Jays have had some HOFers and also some bizarre incidents in their history. A fun team to root for and talk about! We've added a YouTube Channel. Our collections are like fingerprints. Dave Stieb is forgettable twice more. David Letterman and the Buddy Biancalana Hit Counter. Dave calls Terry Forster a "fat tub of goo," but Forster goes body-positive and enjoys his moment in the sun. Plus, feathered hair, Members-Only jackets, and the Camero Z-28. All this and a comb in your back pocket on the latest episode. Dave and Terry Forster: https://youtu.be/uL20VgJ7JM8 "Fat Is In:" https://youtu.be/ao8GhB0TLSg
The line between unforgettable and forgotten can be quite small. In this episode, we remember the career of 1984 American League All-Star starting pitcher Dave Stieb, of whom you can make a legitimate case was the best pitcher of the Eighties. And yet, in terms of rings, awards, indelible seasons, and iconic moments he has almost none. Rather, he *almost* has many.

The NHL's Blocked Shots stat is completely bogus and does a disservice to men like Borje Salming and Harry Howell. Too bad about Trade Deadline Day being a complete dud on TV. Toronto Mike and I get into the Leafs and their chances to beat Tampa now that they've made several trades. We also talk about the speed of baseball Spring Training games and the missed moments of drama. Also, the Raptors can't afford to lose to teams below them in the standings, golf, tennis and my story of Dave Stieb trying to chase a spring no hitter in Bradenton, Florida. Hope you enjoy the show.

I guess it is still noteworthy to point out in the description when all four gentlemen are on the show together...because the streak is over...at two. Russ had his power and Internet knocked out by some bad weather, so Cruz picks up the hosting duties for an episode! After a knockout show intro, Cruz, Deitz and The Mad Hatter jump right into how Cruz is the prognosticator of prognosticators for picking Kansas to win the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Once the gloating was over, Scott and Dietz discuss their thoughts on the very young MLB season, joined eventually by Cruz to talk about how regional sports networks and draconian blackout rules have made it difficult for even the hardcore fans to watch their local teams. Dietz then brings up the episode's namesake by describing how YouTube pulled him down a Dave Stieb rabbit hole. The MLB discussion ends with Cruz picking what surely will be the two World Series teams in 2022. Scott gets his moment in the sun to talk his beloved PGA, the beauty of The Masters, Tiger's redemption story and Scotty Scheffler's incredible run. Scheffler's streak of wins and top finishes led the crew to discuss some other notable sports streaks and how they stack up in comparison. And because Cruz made a comparison to a NASCAR driver (of course), it made for a perfectly executed exit off of turn four into his experience at year two of NASCAR at Circuit of the Americas. Finally, with no good way to change the subject to the last topic, no matter how hard Scotty tried, the boys discuss Daniel Snyder's descent into what will surely be a forced sale of the Washington Commanders. Surely...right? Scott and Cruz just hope the new owner doesn't change the team's name (a.k.a. The 'Manders). Finally, the show wouldn't be complete without one more plug for Dave Stieb. If you didn't know Mr. Stieb before, you surely will after this show!0:00 - Intro/NCAA Tourney (Pick 'Em) Recap6:05 - MLB Early Season Thoughts/Regional Sports Networks19:50 - DAVE STIEB22:45 - World Series Pick 'Em29:45 - The Masters/Tiger/Scottie Sheffler44:20 - Sports Streaks52:15 - Cruz at NASCAR at COTA1:00:55 - Daniel Snyder & the State of NFL Ownership1:21:15 - DAVE STIEB/Outro

Former Blue Jays' great, Pat Hentgen, stops by to discuss his incredible 1996-1997 seasons (26:35) as part of an overall historical look back at great seasons on underperforming ballclubs. Hentgen talks about his struggles to get going in 1995, the impact of Devon White and Roberto Alomar, learning from Charlie O'Brien and Dave Stieb, the mentality that helped him win the Cy Young Award, "competing" with Roger Clemens and what lessons he took with him to the coaching ranks.Greg and Josh also look back at some great seasons on "bad" teams from as far back as 1986 and as recently as 2009 and answer a couple of listener questions.
Throughout the shutdown of MLB caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, ATW will be doing looks back at various aspects of franchise history, from the draft to award winners and snubs to interesting pennant races and more. This week, Greg and Josh look back at the Toronto Blue Jays history with end of season awards and what they meant to the franchise and fandom at the time. They range from Alfredo Griffin's Rookie of the Year win* in 1979 to Josh Donaldson's MVP in 2015. They also look at some historic snubs, including basically Dave Stieb's entire early-mid 80s run and some awards that the Jays probably shouldn't have gotten.
As they did with MVP voting, Mark and Andy revisit the Cy Young voting of the 1980s through the lens of advanced stats to see if the right guys won. In an era in which voting was dominated by wins and saves, the hosts find plenty of room for improvement in the process and shed some light on some stars whose careers have been relatively overlooked but probably deserve some more love. They wrap it all up with an exhilarating round of Roll The Stat, the most popular advanced baseball stat guessing game created in the last 18 months. You'll never look at Dave Stieb the same way again.
