We may have an obscure album for your listening pleasure today. Crabby Appleton was a short-lived band that was formed by the combination of musicians from an acid blues band called Stonehenge and singer-songwriter frontman Michael Fennelly. The band is out of the Laurel Canyon counterculture, which produced many groups like The Mamas & the Papas, Jim Morrison, Carole King, and Jackson Browne. The group gets its name from a character on the late 50's cartoon series Tom Terrific, which was a part of the children's television show "Captain Kangaroo." Their debut album was eponymously named Crabby Appleton. In addition to Michael Fennelly, the group consisted of percussionist Felix "Flaco" Falcon, Casey Foutz on keyboards, Phil Jones on drums, and Hank Harvey on bass. Phil Jones was the catalyst in the formation of the group after he met Fennelly in a club on the Sunset Strip and asked him to join Stonehenge as lead singer and guitarist. The group signed with Elektra Records, and had a top 40 single with "Go Back." Their second album was called "Rotten to the Core" and was recorded in 1971. After experiencing disappointing sales with this sophomore effort the group split up. They would get some mileage out of their initial success before this happened, and would appear on American Bandstand as well as opening for a number of groups including the Doors, Three Dog Night, ABBA, and the Guess Who. Wayne takes us through this lesser known rock album. Friend of the show Bill Cook sits in for Bruce on this podcast. Peace by PeaceThis song grooves with the Hammond organ and talks about getting back what you give. If you lead with a gun others will respond in kind, while if you lead with peace others will respond with peace. It has a sound similar to the Doors, or Emerson, Lake and Palmer. TryThe lead song from side two starts and ends with an upbeat groove with a Santana-esque percussion jam sandwiched in the middle. The lyrics are about a relationship that could go several ways. “We can try or we can throw it away.”CatherineA slower jam, this short acoustic-based ballad feels like Crosby, Stills, and Nash. It is about a guy who longs for a woman who is in another relationship. Go BackThis is the hit from the record, which went to number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was called a proto-power-pop single. The song is about a woman in a new relationship who can't give up her love for her ex. “And you know it's not right when you kiss me tonight and you pretend his lips are mine.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “Chisum”You can't go wrong with John Wayne. This western was set in 1870's New Mexico. STAFF PICKS:Ride Captain Ride by Blues ImageRob launches the staff picks with a song which got its initial lyrics from the number of keys that singer-guitarist Mike Pinera had on his keyboard. “Seventy-three men sailed up from the San Francisco Bay.” The band is out of Tampa Florida, and this was their only top 40 hit, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie WonderLynch brings us a grooving, soulful song that would be the anthem for Motown at the time. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song itself is about a guy who has some back to his love, realizing that what he has is all he wants, never to roam again. The Long and Winding Road by the Beatles Bill features a song off the Beatles “Let It Be” album. It was written by Paul McCartney and was released as a single the month after the group broke up. The original recording was more sparse, and the orchestration was added by Phil Spector. McCartney hated the Spector “wall of sound” arrangement, citing the treatment of the song as one of six reasons for justifying the dissolution of the Beatles partnership.Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and YoungWayne's staff pick takes a political turn with a protest song inspired by the shootings at Kent State. Neil Young wrote and sang lead on this song. Student protests of the expansion of the Vietnam Wars led to a standoff at Kent State in which the National Guard killed four people and wounded nine. NOVELTY TRACK:Killer Joe by Quincy JonesWe finish up the podcast with a jazzy number that was popular at the time in 1970. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and my guest is the Co-Founder and CEO of The Pink Fund! Molly MacDonald is heroic. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on the brink of a divorce with 5 kids under the age of 13. She experienced the financial hardship that can often come hand-in-hand with the disease and found herself in line at the food bank and about to lose her home. She didn't crumble, and she didn't even ask herself “Why Me?” She saw a serious problem and asked herself “What can I do?” A year later, The Pink Fund was born. 1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and most will face the financial hardship that cancer causes which is how to pay for your home, car, insurance, food, and electricity while undergoing treatment which often has women forced to lose their jobs and income. Molly learned that many of these women were opting to keep their jobs so they could keep the lights on and the kids fed instead of getting treatment. Now The Pink Fund helps women who qualify pay their essential bills for 90 to 180 days. She started The Pink Fund with her husband whom she calls Tom Terrific! He saw her vision and now The Pink Fund has paid 7.4 million dollars to women in need. Molly's personal stories are not just heroic and harrowing though, she is also hilarious and tells us about forgetting her prosthetic breast on a business trip taking advice from a stranger on a plane and how she and her friends made a cast of her bust out of dental stone that she cured on a home foot spa. She named it my “My Winged Victory” and I have encouraged her to put it on permanent display! She also tells us how we can help women with breast cancer and how you can help yourself if you are facing breast cancer right now. In the episode we talk about financial toxicity, what it is, and how to avoid it. We discuss breast reconstruction, Molly's article DIEPly Distrubred about the DIEP flap reconstruction procedure not being covered by insurance, and how most women don't know that they have options when it comes to reconstruction. She gives us practical advice on how to advocate for yourself if you have breast cancer and how you can help those you love by advocating for them. She shares actionable wisdom that you don't want to miss. For more information on The Pink Fund, go to www.thepinkfund.org We also share a partnership that I'm honored to have, which is during breast cancer awareness month, for every purchase of a Huge Pussy Pink Beanie, $10 gets donated to The Pink Fund. Molly is a courageous woman who epitomizes Huge Pussy Energy, which is needed more than ever, so go to www.hugepussy.org to get yours and one for all of your friends! Cosmopolitan magazine calls out the Huge Pussy Pink Beanie as one of the best holiday gifts to give and every one sold helps The Pink Fund!

Iona College Radio Hour with Willie O'Ree and Chelsea Cabarcas
SportsGrid Radio Host Mike Carver and producer Mike Damergis have some with Joe Lisi about his blind-sided love of football when he says the youth aren't aware of Tom Terrific!
On this date in 1965, the Mets opened their fourth season with an 8-1 loss to the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. The 112-loss season didn't even have a moment to gather oxygen before Maury Wills led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball by Chris Cannizzaro, and scored on a Willie Davis double. Later that inning, being the 1965 Mets, it became 2-0 Dodgers when Davis scored on a foul pop to Cannizzaro. How the heck did that happen? Did any of our subscribers see the Mets' 1965 opener? If you did see that game, you might also remember that it became 5-0 in the fourth inning when Don Drysdale hit a two-run homer off Al Jackson. That was one of four homers that Drysdale hit in his career against the Mets, tied with Bob Gibson for the all-time lead among pitchers. The Mets have given up 95 homers all-time to pitchers, a number that figures to stay in double digits for many years to come, barring a wave of Shohei Ohtani copycats in the majors.Drysdale hit a solo shot off Tracy Stallard in 1964 at Shea, the two-run dinger off Jackson in the 1965 opener, a tiebreaking solo blast off Warren Spahn in the eighth inning on June 11, 1965, and then one more on July 24, 1966, at Dodger Satdium, off Jack Fisher.Stallard also gave up homers during his Mets tenure to Juan Marichal (1963) and Wade Blasingame (1964), which ties him with Ron Darling, Jacob deGrom, and Dillon Gee among Mets pitchers for giving up dingers to their opposite number. The king of this dubious category? Not surprisingly, it's Tom Seaver, given the amount of opportunities he had.Seaver gave up homers in 1969 to Dan McGinn and Fergie Jenkins (two of six homers that pitchers hit against the Mets that year (tied with 1962 and 2006 — Dontrelle Willis took Jose Lima, Oliver Pérez, and Roberto Hernandez deep that year — for the team record), Juan Pizarro in 1971, Burt Hooton (a grand slam) in 1972, and Larry Christenson in 1976. Tom Terrific got one of those dingers back in 1979, when he took Craig Swan out of the park in Cincinnati. As a Met, Seaver hit six home runs, a team record since broken by Dwight Gooden, who tallied seven. Noah Syndergaard also hit six taters with the Mets. What none of those guys did is hit a grand slam, something no Mets pitcher has done since Jack Hamilton on May 20, 1967… off Al Jackson. Hamilton gave back all four runs within two innings, left the game tied at 4-4, and watched the Mets build back up to a 9-4 lead before losing to the Cardinals, 11-9.Mets pitchers have hit two grand slams, ever, with the other one hit in 1963 by Carl Willey at the Polo Grounds against the Houston Colt .45s. That total of two is equaled by the number of grand slams that the Mets allowed to pitchers in the final season at Shea Stadium: Félix Hernández (off Johan Santana) and Jason Marquis (off Jon Niese) both did it.The Mets are 0-7 all-time when allowing a grand slam to an opposing pitcher. No team has given up more of them since 1962. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe

Episode 41 of The Far Middle is dedicated to 12-time All-Star Tom Seaver. In looking back at “Tom Terrific’s” career, Nick notes his career stats, including an earned run average below 3.00. “The only thing lower than Tom Seaver’s career ERA seems these days to be office occupancy rates in big cities,” says Nick as he examines the causes and consequences of people not returning to in-person work. Next, Nick discusses the concept of “the resource curse” and how environmentalism and climate change policies have succeeded in reversing the resource curse. Nick highlights how leverage has shifted back to Iran’s favor; and, he doesn’t see a resource curse today, but rather a lack of energy independence curse for Western nations. “When you look at resources, and when look at carbon, does it matter where the carbon dioxide comes from?” asks Nick before explaining environmentalism and government’s obsession with ideology over science and facts. Nick continues with a discussion on society’s blind eye toward how products are manufactured, followed by a look at one of the latest meaningless corporate “net zero” announcements, and closes with birthday wishes to novelist John Steinbeck.
