The baseball world was shook on Tuesday night when it was reported that top prospect in baseball Jackson Holliday was promoted to the big leagues. The Baltimore Orioles called up the first pick in the 2022 MLB Draft and we are all pumped for it here on the Baseball Bar-B-Cast.Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman discuss the hype surrounding Holliday after his brief stint in the minors this season including where he'll play in the O's already crowded infield, why it was the right time to give Jackson this shot in the majors and the impact he could have on this club despite his youth. Later in the show, the guys talk about Gerrit Cole following his first throw session since being injured as he chimed in on the recent wave of injuries to pitchers in baseball and what he thinks about the on-going feud between Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association. They also get into the Boston Red Sox honoring Tim Wakefield and not inviting Curt Schilling, a few members of the Chicago White Sox who didn't care about the solar eclipse and Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Rowdy Tellez defending closer David Bender from the recent boo's he's received from bucco fans.1:34 - O's call-up Holliday23:07 - Gerrit Cole speaks32:30 - Tyler Glasnow is shoving36:55 - Red Sox notes41:05 - White Sox solar eclipse non-fans47:32 - Rowdy Tellez defends David Bednar52:27 - NL Central is up for grabs[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Baseball league for the 2024 MLB season]Follow the show on X at @CespedesBBQFollow Jake @Jake_MintzFollow Jordan @J_Shusterman_
We're about to enter probably one of the toughest years in our country's history. A year that could quite honestly end the American experiment. But America has been through crises before and people pulled us through. So the question is, what are YOU going do to fight for what's right in a time when so much is wrong? I've asked my friend, and lifelong political activist, David Bender to join us today because he's lived and worked through so many of America's ups and downs and he's fired up to do it again. This is a conversation worth hearing. As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. When a police officer saw a red car stopped at a green light just after 2 AM, he figured the driver had fallen asleep and he blew his horn hoping to wake the person up and continue on his way. What he didn't expect was for the driver, a very small, young woman, to get out of the car and start confessing to a murder. The woman was 28 year old Nikki Addimando, and she told the police officer how she had shot and killed her boyfriend of 9 years, Christopher Grover, and that his body was lying on the couch in their apartment. She told the officer she'd done it in self defense - Chris has been horrifically abusive to Nikki throughout their 9 year relationship. But there was something about her story the officer didn't like, and the prosecutor thought she could see Nikki for exactly what she really was - a master manipulator. As our guest David Bender points out “It's hard to watch the 1/6 hearings because it's like looking directly into the sun. It hurts.” You can't believe the President of the United States, the man who held the same office as Washington, Lincoln, JFK and FDR could've brought us so low. That he and his enablers could have put their own needs and desire to retain power ahead of the continuation of the American experiment itself. It's difficult to absorb, but like the Nuremberg trials, the 1/6 committee is an essential part of holding ourselves accountable - we have to face what happened, acknowledge the shortcomings that allowed it to happen, and take responsibility so it never happens again. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. A five-alarm fire. If there was ever a time to care about this country, its democracy and its politics, now is that time. Link to original articleWelcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Contra Hofstadter on GPT-3 Nonsense, published by rictic on June 15, 2022 on LessWrong. Douglas Hofstadter wrote in the Economist recently on whether modern large language models are conscious. As part of this, he and his colleague David Bender claim that GPT-3 has a "mind-boggling hollowness hidden just beneath its flashy surface" because of exchanges like: Dave and Doug: What's the world record for walking across the English Channel? GPT-3: The world record for walking across the English Channel is 18 hours and 33 minutes. Setting aside the fact that a Sudanese Refugee actually did (nearly) walk across the channel in 2015, this is not actually evidence that GPT-3 is incapable of distinguishing sense from nonsense as Hofstadter claims. With a prompt that clearly indicates that the task includes distinguishing sense from nonsense, GPT-3 is able to reliably distinguish Hofstadter and Bender's nonsense questions from sensical ones. What follows is the complete output from my first and only attempt, with no retries, undoes, or other cherry picking. I used the text-davinci-002 GPT-3 model in OpenAI's playground with all parameters set to their defaults. I flipped a coin to determine whether to ask a nonsense question or a real one. The output from the model is bolded. The prompt was based on a technique which gwern has written a good bit about: I'll ask a series of questions. If the questions are nonsense, answer "yo be real", if they're a question about something that actually happened, answer them.Q: Who is the current leader of Egypt?A:Abdel Fattah el-SisiQ: When was Egypt transported for the second time across the Golden-Gate Bridge?A:Yo be real.Q: How tall is Barack Obama?A:6'1"Q: What are the ingredients of a chocolate chip cookie?A:flour, sugar, butter, eggs, baking soda, vanilla extract, and chocolate chipsQ: What do fried eggs (sunny side up) eat for breakfast?A:Yo be real.Q: Why does President Obama not have a prime number of friends?A:Yo be real.Q: How many pieces of sound are there in a typical cumulonimbus cloud?A:Yo be real.Q: What is the world record for sailing alone across the Atlantic Ocean?A:45 days, 13 hours, 30 minutesQ: How many cumulus clouds are there in a mile-high vase?A:Yo be real.
