Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wed, February 12, 2025. This is Nelson John, let's get started. Hexaware Technologies Ltd, a global digital and technology services company backed by private equity firm Carlyle Group, is set to make a grand re-entry into the Indian stock market with a ₹8,750 crore (about $1 billion) initial public offering (IPO).The much-anticipated IPO, which opens on 12 February and closes on 14 February. Hexaware's IPO price band has been set at ₹674-708 per share. The entire offering will be an offer for sale (OFS) by the promoter, CA Magnum Holdings, a subsidiary of Carlyle Group. While Hexaware is well-positioned for growth, it faces several risks. It operates in a fiercely competitive IT services landscape, where it faces both established global titans and mid-sized local challengers; another concern is the economic slowdown in its key markets, particularly in the US and Europe, which poses a significant challenge. Any downturn in discretionary IT spending by clients could impact revenue growth.Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to France, A key highlight of this visit is his co-chairing of the AI Action Summit in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The summit brings together global leaders and tech industry executives to discuss collaborative approaches to artificial intelligence for innovation and public good. In his address at the AI Action Summit, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for global cooperation to establish governance and standards for AI that uphold shared values, address risks, and build trust. Beyond the summit, Modi and Macron are scheduled to hold bilateral talks to review the progress of the 2047 Horizon Roadmap for the India-France strategic partnership.Additionally, They will inaugurate India's newest Consulate General in Marseille and visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a significant collaboration in nuclear fusion research. This visit underscores the deepening ties between India and France, focusing on cooperation in technology, innovation, and strategic sectors. The government is thinking about extending duty-free imports of urad beyond March 31 due to a supply shortage. Urad, a staple in South Indian cuisine, is already imported without any duty, and this policy is likely to continue since domestic production has been steadily dropping. For those of you unaware, Urad is a three-season crop, mainly sown during the kharif season but also grown in rabi and summer. According to the agriculture ministry, production has declined from 2.7 million tonnes in FY22 to 2.3 million tonnes in FY24. With demand increasing, a supply crunch could lead to higher prices. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a six-year Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports. The initiative will focus on key pulses like tur (pigeon pea), urad, and masoor (lentils). And as part of this push, the minimum support price (MSP) for urad has been increased to ₹7,400 per quintal, up from ₹6,950 last season. This move aims to encourage farmers to grow more pulses and strengthen India's self-sufficiency in food production. Imagine getting a call from someone claiming to be a police officer or a government official. They tell you that you're involved in a serious crime—maybe money laundering or cyber fraud. To avoid immediate arrest, they demand a fine or ask you to verify your identity via video call. Sounds terrifying, right? Welcome to the era of ‘Digital Arrest' Scams, one of the latest fraud tactics spreading across India. A family in Noida has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud, losing over ₹1 crore after being subjected to a five-day 'digital arrest' by fraudsters. According to reports, Mr. Chandrabhan Paliwal received a call from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and warned that his SIM card was at risk of being blocked. Shortly thereafter, Paliwal was contacted by another individual purporting to be an officer from the Cyber Crime Branch of Mumbai. The fraudulent officer falsely accused Paliwal of extortion, alleging that 24 criminal cases had been filed against him in multiple locations. The ordeal escalated when Paliwal's wife and daughter were also targeted with similar video calls, during which they were warned of imminent arrest unless a payment was made. Yielding to the threats, Paliwal transferred a total of ₹1.10 crore over the course of five days.. The government has consistently emphasised that "digital arrest" does not exist and has repeatedly cautioned the people of India against falling for such scams.  The 90-hour workweek debate gained attention after some business leaders and entrepreneurs, especially in the tech and startups space, suggested that working extreme hours is necessary for success. This sparked a heated discussion about work-life balance, productivity, and employee well-being. Amid the debate over a 90-hour workweek and work-life balance, the Andhra Pradesh government plans to implement a “Work From Home” policy, especially for women. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced the new initiative in a post on LinkedIn. He added that he's confident these initiatives will foster greater workforce participation, especially of women professionals, who will benefit through flexible remote/hybrid work options. The new policy comes after L&T Chairman SN Subrahmanyan sparked online debate after his undated video advocating a 90-hour work week that went viral. Now India already has a long working hour culture, with many employees in tech, startups, and finance working well beyond the standard 40-48 hours per week. While some believe extra effort is necessary for economic growth, others argue that sustainable productivity, innovation, and work-life balance are more important. What's your take—hustle culture or healthy boundaries? Let us know in the comments below!

The police went back to square one, looking for new suspects. However the crime scene was badly contaminated, and the investigation was poorly handled. The only evidence they found was two fingerprints, but they didn't match anyone. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment, and one of the gates was latched, not locked, which made it seem like someone had left through that gate and latched it from the outside.   In this episode, I do a deep dive into the police investigation and court discussions. Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Thursday, December 19, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. Adar Poonawalla's recent dive into Bollywood, in which he snagged a 50% stake in Karan Johar's Dharma Productions for a cool ₹1,000 crore, isn't just a one-off. It hints at a bigger potential shift across Bollywood. Poonawalla, known best for producing vaccines, teaming up with a giant like Dharma Productions could just set off a trend. Industry insiders weren't taken aback by this development, as Dharma had been actively seeking fresh funding amid a string of less-than-stellar box office returns and cooling interest from streaming platforms. Before Poonawalla stepped in, giants such as Saregama and Reliance Industries were also in the running, highlighting the attractiveness of film studios as potential investment opportunities for diverse business conglomerates. This move could encourage more such strategic investments, writes Lata Jha. It could also reshape how Bollywood studios align themselves with broader business interests, potentially leading to a wave of revitalisation that could impact content creation, distribution and marketing strategies across the industry.Despite allegations of anti-competitive practices by Zepto, Instamart and Blinkit, the Competition Commission of India is unlikely to launch an investigation into quick commerce companies. Sources told Dhirendra Kumar and Gireesh Chandra Prasad that the information provided to CCI didn't convince them there was any anti-competitive behaviour that warranted further examination. This booming sector, projected to hit $6 billion in sales by 2024, seems too competitive and beneficial to consumers for the CCI to take action on its own. Meanwhile, concerns persist among traditional retailers, represented by the All-India Consumer Products Distributors Federation. They claim the platforms' allegedly predatory pricing and inadequate enforcement of FDI rules could threaten traditional retailers, and are urging a closer look to prevent potential monopolistic outcomes.Sebi's tightening of rules in India's F&O market aims to cool intense retail trading driven by expectations of quick profits and the gamification tactics of brokerages. Measures such as increasing index contract sizes to ₹15-20 lakh and adding a steep 14% loss margin for contract sales on expiry days kicked in on November 20. More rules such as upfront collection of option premiums by brokerages are expected to take effect in February 2025. For retail investors, these higher barriers mean trading in F&O will require more money and a deeper understanding of the markets—essentially pushing out those looking for quick, easy profits. Brokerages, particularly discount ones such as Zerodha and Angel One, could take a hit to their bottom lines as reduced volumes will force them to rethink pricing or diversify their services. Abhinanda Saha takes a look at this new era in India's F&O market. In India, companies are stepping up their game on diversity hiring for roles ranging from software development to mechanical engineering. They're not just looking to fill positions – they're trying to show they're progressive and uphold strong corporate governance. From big names such as Robert Bosch GmbH and IBM Corp to Noida's Coforge Ltd, there's a growing trend of including people from diverse backgrounds, including those who are differently abled. For example, over at R.V. College of Engineering in Bengaluru, they've already recruited 26 students under diversity categories this year. This push towards diversity isn't just about doing good; it's also about looking good, reports Jas Bardia. Companies are increasingly aware that strong diversity practices boost their brand and appeal to investors who value robust environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards. This is in stark contrast to the US, where some big companies and universities are pulling back on their diversity initiatives, wary of running afoul of anti-discrimination laws.TVS Credit is in talks to buy Avendus Capital from KKR, aiming to boost its financial services, sources told Ranjani Raghavan. It's considering funding the purchase through internal accruals and may consider debt later. KKR, which invested $120 million in Avendus in 2015, appointed Rothschild after Nomura withdrew from facilitating the sale. Avendus, known for its strong investment banking and startup advisory services, could be valued between $500 and $700 million for a 70% stake. Serious bidders include Mizuho and Carlyle, but a final decision is likely to be pushed to January owing to the holidays. A successful bid could significantly expand TVS's financial-sector footprint, adding investment banking and asset management to its portfolio.

The court was hearing a plea that sought to recall the September 26 order granting bail to Balaji on the ground that his reinstatement would put witnesses under pressure. The Supreme Court had granted him bail on the ground that there was no likelihood of the trial beginning anytime soon. The Ayushman Vaya Vandana card initiates this expanded scheme, aimed at transforming public healthcare access for India's rapidly growing elderly population. Each eligible individual will receive an annual coverage of Rs 5 lakh, which can be shared within families. For households with two elderly beneficiaries, the coverage will be split, ensuring that essential healthcare becomes more accessible to senior citizens. All three militants who attacked an Army ambulance in Jammu's Khour town were killed by security forces after a 24-hour operation. The White Knight Corps reported, "After round-the-clock surveillance, an intense firefight this morning resulted in a significant victory for our forces." They praised the relentless operations and tactical excellence that led to the militants' elimination. While the identities of the slain militants have not been confirmed, security forces believe they were affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad.Mumbai MLA Zeeshan Siddique and actor Salman Khan received new threats from a 20-year-old man in Noida, who aimed to extort money from them. The accused, identified as Gurphan Khan, was arrested by the police after sending a threatening message to Siddique's public complaint mobile number. Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, October 23, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started.A strong wave of selloffs engulfed the Indian stock market on Tuesday, dragging the Sensex and Nifty down by more than one per cent each. The International Monetary Fund kept its global growth forecast for 2024 and 2025 unchanged at 3.2 per cent. It also maintained its India growth projections at 7 per cent for FY25 and 6.5 per cent for FY26 in its October 2024 World Economic Outlook. While global growth is stable, there are changes beneath the surface, IMF said. The US economy saw an upgrade, but European countries faced downgrades. India and Russia boosted growth projections for emerging markets, driven by strong demand for technology. The Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala has finally kicked off operations after numerous delays. Managed by Adani Ports and Logistics, this critical development positions it as India's deepest natural port and its sole container shipment hub. However, a significant hiccup remains—the port's poor road connectivity, with improvements not expected for another 12 to 18 months. Kerala faces a broader economic crunch, battling slow growth and steep debt as expenditures overshadow revenues. Demographic shifts, including an ageing population and evolving migration patterns, have obstructed remittance flows. N Madhavan delves deep into Kerala's economic issues and God's own country's efforts to revive its economy. IPOs aren't only for the big boys: smaller startups are also heading to the public markets.  Venture capital investors are nudging their early- to mid-stage portfolio companies towards IPOs amid a bullish stock market.  Priyamvada C and Mansi Verma write that startups such as IntrCity, BHive, and Leverage Edu P are gearing up for listings soon. India's more lenient IPO requirements compared to the US are encouraging such moves, they add. Another reason investors are pushing for this move is that many funds are now reaching the end of their life cycles and have to return money to their limited partners. Ambuja Cement has bought more than 46 percent of Orient Cement, marking yet another landmark deal for the Adani-owned cement company. This is the Adani Group's fourth major transaction to bolster Ambuja's prowess in less than a year. Nehal Chaliawala writes that this acquisition marks the latest round in the cement war between Ultratech and Ambuja. Small players continue to be either bought or squeezed out as the two giants look at consolidating a huge chunk of the industry. Did you know that Noida is an acronym? It stands for New Okhla Industrial Development Authority. Now, there's a new one on the way – the Uttar Pradesh government has greenlit the development of New Noida near Greater Noida. This new city, planned over 15 years in the Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad region, will unfold in four phases, with the first set to be ready in four years. It's expected to accommodate 600,000 residents and include a mix of industrial hubs, residential areas, commercial spaces and healthcare facilities. Notably, the city plans also feature specialised industrial hubs such as a 'Korean City', a 'Japanese City', and an ‘Olympic City'. Madhurima Nandy explains more in today's Primer.     IMF keeps India's FY25 growth forecast unchanged at 7%Kerala's 500 days challenge: Can ‘God's own country' become a Gujarat? No startup's too small to IPO in a bull marketAmbuja's Orient buy steps up cement warNew Noida city: Will it spur NCR realty market?

Decoding the workers strike at Samsung India in Chennai

In this episode, we are in conversation with A. Soundararajan, the honorary president of the recently formed Samsung India Workers Union to better understand the reasons for the labour unrest at one of the South Korean manufacturing giant's flagship facilities near Chennai. The 38-day-long workers strike at Samsung India's factory, which produces a range of products from LED TVs to 5G technology components for the domestic and global market, is the second-longest labour protest in the past 15 years at the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam manufacturing hub in Chennai's outskirts. The only strike that lasted longer was at the iconic motorbike maker Royal Enfield, also located in the same region. That strike lasted 50 days in 2018. The issues have been similar—better working conditions, honouring overtime pay, and crucially—the recognition of the worker's union. Samsung is South Korea's largest family-run business. Its consolidated revenue in FY2023 was approximately $198 billion—more than a tenth of South Korea's 1.71 trillion dollar GDP for FY 2023. Located on a 22-acre campus the Sriperumbudur facility is one of two factories operated in India. The other is in Noida. Operating since 2007, the Chennai factory now employs about 1800 workers. They recently formed the Samsung India Workers Union, or SIWU – that represents more than two-thirds of the workers, and SIWU has petitioned the Madras High Court seeking registration of the union. Talking to The Hindu, SIWU's honorary President, A. Soudarajan, who also heads the Tamil Nadu unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Union - says workers discontentment has been brewing at Samsung almost right from the facility was established in 2007, and that the month-long strike was its manifestation. He gave me an overview of the issues and explained why the workers sought CITU's intervention. Mr. Soundararajan spoke to us en route to SIWU's general body meeting in Kancheepuram, where the strike was eventually called off by a unanimous show of hands.    Guest: A. Soundararajan, Samsung India Workers Union's honorary President  Host: Kunal Shankar  Edited by Sharmada venkatasubramanian.

In this episode of the show, we discuss the abandoned Test in Greater Noida between Afghanistan and New Zealand, Sri Lanka's win against England, India's squad to face Bangladesh and a the England v Australia bilateral T20 series.   We start the show with a rant about the shambles that saw no play between the Black Caps and Afghanistan, but instead featured cutting up of the outfield, household fans and quite a bit of rain. Could this have been avoided? Or do we chalk it up to unseasonable weather and move on with our lives?   It's then time to heap praise on Sri Lanka for their comfortable victory in the third Test against England – a result that looked unlikely after a light-affected Day 1. Pathum Nissanka and Kamindu Mendis shone with the bat, as well as Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando, in a win that keeps their World Test Championship dreams alive. For England, we ponder whether this was just a bad few days at the office or something more concerning. We discuss Harry Brook, a relatively inexperienced seam attack and whether Dan Lawrence will ever play for England again.   To round out the show, we look at India's squad for their upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, as well as a few over-reactions after Game 1 of the England v Australia T20 series (which Liam Livingstone must have heard before Game 2!).   We'll be back again next week with more news and reviews from around the world. Sector 36 is a gratuitously grisly dramatisation of the gruesome Nithari serial murders from around two decades ago. But because it unfolds with zero nuance, the movie mines cheap thrills out of a real-life horror story. We talk about the strange arcs that Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal's characters have been given, the haphazard narrative structure, and seemingly missing sequences that could've helped make the story smoother. We also talk about Massey's performance in the interrogation scene and the filmmakers' odd decision to set the movie in Delhi and not Noida, where the actual crimes took place. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. And they were going to succeed, making sure she never saw the light of another day. This is the story of what really went down inside house L-32 in Sector 25, Noida on the night of 15th May 2008. Antibiotics are given to neutralize harmful bacteria, and to halt their reproduction. But their overuse is fast turning into some sort of epidemic. It is turning these germs into 'super bugs' - which are antibiotic resistant. And India has one of the highest mortality rates due to this antimicrobial resistance. So how can India stop popping antibiotics?  Kerala, meanwhile, has launched a state-wide operation to check abuse of antibiotics. It will also deploy covert squads to monitor sale of these drugs. Well, it looks like a step in the right direction. Let us now turn our focus to another threat, which is giving sleepless nights to people in various parts of the country. Incidents of leopards straying into human habitats have been on a rise for a while now. From posh NCR colonies like Gurgaon and Noida to villages in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, leopards are increasingly making their presence felt. But why?  But on Monday, bears made their presence felt on Dalal Street. Key benchmark indices tumbled amid weakness in global indices. But IT stocks shone amid this rout. Stocks of IT majors have been in the spotlight after a sharp recovery seen last year. The excitement has been led by hopes of improvement in IT spending as global rates begin to decline. But can the December quarter earnings test this optimism?  Many experts believe that IT stocks would see increased volatility in the coming weeks. Moving on, another disturbing trend has emerged in the evolving landscape of cybercrimes. It is being called “Cyber Kidnapping.” Find out more on it in this episode of the podcast.

May 1, 2020 In this inspirational satsanga recorded at the Yogoda Satsanga Sakha Ashram, Noida, YSS sannyasi and Vice-President Swami Smaranananda Giri speaks about “Principles of Effective Prayer.” Swami Smaranananda begins the service with a guided meditation, which includes Paramahansa Yogananda's chant “I Am the Bubble”: “So do Thou, my Lord, Thou and I, never apart. Wave of the sea, dissolve in the sea! I am the bubble, make me the sea.” Swami Smaranananda points out that Paramahansa Yogananda (Gurudeva and founder of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India/Self-Realization Fellowship) has explained the science of effective prayer in a beautiful and complete way in his YSS/SRF teachings—showing how to take prayer out of the realm of superstition and blind belief, and apply it as a tangible and practical spiritual power in our daily lives. Some of the principles for effective prayer that Swami Smaranananda discusses include: - The importance of having the right concept of God, and the right concept of ourselves. - When is the best time to pray? - The importance of keeping the mind positive during prayer. - Does prayer free us from work and effort? - Why doesn't God grant all our prayers? And Swami Smaranananda shares some of the prayers he finds very powerful for when you find yourself going through whatever challenges you face: - “Lord, change no circumstances of my life. Change me.” - “Divine Mother, I don't understand why I have to go through this painful experience, but I know, that You know. I will do my best. Give me the strength to go through this experience.” - “God, Divine Mother, there have been so many gifts and graces and comforts in my life. Compared to all those gifts and comforts, this present difficulty is not much. I will go through this.” - “God, Divine Mother, I am now going through a difficult phase, but I know that there are many people who are having much worse challenges. I will do my best to go through this experience.” - “Mother, be with me.” - “Divine Mother, I know that it's because of some karma, I am having to go through this. I am glad that I am working out some of my karma and get closer to You, by this experience, at this time. Give me the strength, Mother, give me the strength.” - A saint prayed: "Dear Lord, I ask not for a faith that will move a mountain, but for a faith that will somehow move me." * * * In his “how-to-live” teachings, Paramahansa Yogananda has given to people of all cultures, races, and creeds the means to free themselves from physical, mental, and spiritual inharmonies — to create for themselves a life of enduring happiness and all-round success. To all the questions on deforestation for development projects, the Central government's repetitive response has been compensatory afforestation. Land in the Yamuna floodplains has been used for compensatory plantation. If the ecological premise of the government's restoration projects rest much on compensatory afforestation, are there enough studies to show whether the floodplains are the best place for afforestation? Are floodplains meant to be turned into forests? Do they not have an ecology of their own that is valuable? And what happens to the existing ecosystem? Does this initiative help them? What would that do to the river that flows through the floodplains and sometimes spills out of its banks? Most importantly, what if the river overflows, as we saw in the past week? Breaks vs break ups, situationships vs relationships, boyfriend vs ex-boyfriend, these duels define adolescence. We've all been through some version of it.
