REFERENCES En 1962, Alfred Hitchcock accorde un long entretien à François Truffaut.

Our brand new episode is out! In this weeks shenanigans we realise that Cary Grant is a pimp... the wine cellar is king and both shady hosts are nothing more than angry red blobs from an animated movie.... Notorious is a 1946 American spy film noir directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, and Claude Rains as three people whose lives become intimately entangled during an espionage operation. The film follows U.S. government agent T.R. Devlin (Grant), who enlists the help of Alicia Huberman (Bergman), the daughter of a German war criminal, to infiltrate a Nazi organization. The situation becomes complicated when the two fall in love as Huberman is instructed to seduce Alex Sebastian (Rains), a leader of the organization who had previously been infatuated with her. It was shot in late 1945 and early 1946, and was released by RKO Radio Pictures in August 1946. Notorious is considered by critics and scholars to mark a watershed for Hitchcock artistically, and to represent a heightened thematic maturity. His biographer, Donald Spoto, writes that "Notorious is in fact Alfred Hitchcock's first attempt—at the age of forty-six—to bring his talents to the creation of a serious love story, and its story of two men in love with Ingrid Bergman could only have been made at this stage of his life."[4] In 2006, Notorious was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". We know what you're thinking. How can those Vintage Sand guys be so durned knowledgeable about film and yet still maintain their humility? Well, of course the three of us have seen way too many films over the years, but the truth is that so much of what has shaped our lives as filmgoers has come from reading some of the great books written about film by filmmakers, great critics, and film historians. At Vintage Sand, we've never claimed any expertise in film as such. We have tried simply to share our enthusiasm in the hope of opening doors for our listeners regarding our favorite films and perhaps some different and useful ways to watch them. So, instead of trying to take you to school this time, we're taking you to the library. The titles we discuss in this episode, as mentioned above, do what film studies does best – open new doors. You'll find that the books on our list are pretty much free of jargon (the use of the word “liminality” is expressly forbidden), as well as tell-all gossip. For the sake of time and sanity, we've omitted fictional works about Hollywood and the process of making movies; West's The Day of the Locust, Fitzgerald's The Last Tycoon, and Terry Southern's Blue Movie, are some examples that are worth your time along those lines. So dig up your library cards, clean your glasses and come along with us to see why names like David Thomson and Donald Spoto are as important to our lives as film fanatics as names like Kubrick or Hitchcock.

Historically Speaking-Uncommon History with an Unconventional Pair

Almost six centuries have come and gone and we're still talking about an illiterate peasant girl who only lived to be nineteen years old. Why? Not only did she inspire her nation by leading thousands of men into battle, but she also ushered in the end of the Hundred's Year War thus saving her nation of France from English rule. Was she divinely inspired or was she a schizophrenic who heard the voices of martyred saints in her head? We may never know the answer to that question, but here in Episode 28 we unpack a lot about Joan of Arc.Episode Edit: In the interest of accuracy and fairness, in 1450, almost twenty years after Joan's death, King Charles VII did himself have a retrial of Joan which vindicated her. This was before Pope Calixtus III (1455-1458) also had a retrial. To Charles' credit, he couldn't have the retrial until he did because it wasn't until late 1449 that he and French forces were able to take Rouen where Joan's trial and burning occurred and where all the papers and documents related to the trial were located.Books: The Hundred Years War by Edouard Perroy (translated from the French) Joan: The Mysterious Life of The Heretic Who Became a Saint by Donald Spoto  The Life of Joan of Arc by Anatole France (translated from the French)The Fifteenth Century 1399-1485 by E.F. My interview with Donald McGovern the author of Murder Orthodoxies: A Non-Conspiracist's View of Marilyn Monroe's Death. You're in for a real treat! We cover A LOT of ground! The one-time tryst Marilyn Monroe and JFK had while both were in Palm Springs. She was single and he was not—there was no long-term relationship nor any intension of becoming the first lady. Now, she did have a platonic relationship with RFK. There was no need to embellish more than what it was. We also cover his alleged helicopter ride on August 4th. The Norman Mailer’s—fictional novel--as if it were a written attempt by a 13 year old boy’s fantasy to Marilyn. The Coroner’s Report—where the Autopsy shows that Marilyn was never injected--nor was she given an enema or suppository. We went over--The pills that were swallowed verses injections—it fascinating—McGovern gives an in-depth analysis of the chemicals in Marilyn’s system—and it is very compelling. You decide for yourself—I implore you to get McGovern’s book and pour over the later chapters. Again, people you need to read this book. It is deep and so well written—no book comes close to McGovern unearthing of evidence and sourced material. We poke at--Frank Capell, Anthony Summers, Donald Spoto, Ted Jordan, Dr. Greenson, Dr. Engelberg, Robert Slatzer, Jeanie Carmen, Eunice Murray, Thomas Noguchi and John Miner. You more valuable to them as a sex stimulant."MM: "I want that. Because I want to be an artist, not an erotic freak. I don't want to be sold to the public as a celluoid aphrodisical. Look at me and start shaking. It was all right for the first few years. but now it's different."Background: Maternal great-grandfather has syphilis and got dementia as a result; maternal grandmother died in a straitjacket (violent and ran around naked); maternal grandfather was an alcoholic; mother was commited to mental hospital; was not sure who her father was. When she was 7 a neighbor chopped her dog in 2 in front of her. From Music for Chameleons:Constance Collier's description:She is a beautiful child. I don’t mean that in the obvious way—the perhaps too obvious way. I don’t think she’s an actress at all, not in any traditional sense. What she has—this presence, this luminosity, this flickering intelligence—could never surface on the stage. It’s so fragile and subtle, it can only be caught by the camera. It’s like a hummingbird in flight: only a camera can freeze the poetry of it. But anyone who thinks this girl is simply another Harlow or harlot or whatever is mad. ..This beautiful child is without any concept of discipline or sacrifice. Somehow I don’t think she’ll make old bones. Absurd of me to say, but somehow I feel she’ll go young. I hope, I really pray, that she survives long enough to free the strange lovely talent that’s wandering through her like a jailed spirit.”

In this episode Adrian explores the way the natural world has a curative effect on us. He looks at the way we interact with that world and that, after all we are animals ourselves and we are an integral part of the ecosystem we live in, especially if we are prepared to listen to it, rather than ignore it. We will then find our place in the family of things. There is a bonus song on this podcast, a Donavan composition for the Zeffirelli Film Brother Sun and Sister Moon. It is sung by Wilma Scott; Adrian's wife. The books mentioned are, Wild Signs and Star Paths: The keys to our lost sixth sense by Tristan , Becoming Animal by David Abrams, Rewild Yourself: 23 Spellbinding Ways to Make Nature More Visible by Simon Barnes, The Reluctant Saint by Donald Spoto. My third collection of poetry is called A Night Sea Journey and is available with my other works at www.adriangrscott.com.

In just seven years–from 1950 through 1956–Grace Kelly embarked on a whirlwind career that included roles in eleven movies. From the principled Amy Fowler Kane in High Noon to the thrill-seeking Frances Stevens of To Catch a Thief, Grace established herself as one of Hollywood’s most talented actresses and iconic beauties. Her astonishing career lasted until her retirement at age twenty-six, when she withdrew from stage and screen to marry a European monarch and became a modern, working princess and mother. Based on never-before-published or quoted interviews with Grace and those conducted over many years with her friends and colleagues–from costars James Stewart and Cary Grant to director Alfred Hitchcock–as well as many documents disclosed by her children for the first time, acclaimed biographer Donald Spoto explores the transformation of a convent schoolgirl to New York model, successful television actress, Oscar-winning movie star, and beloved royal. As the princess requested, Spoto waited twenty-five years after her death to write this biography. Now, with honesty and insight, High Society reveals the truth of Grace Kelly’s personal life, the men she loved, the men she didn’t, and what lay behind the façade of her fairy-tale life.
