Regjeringen tåler ikke to sånne sjokk oppå hverandre. Hosted on Acast.

Hazte preguntas: ¿Evitas escuchar a tu cuerpo? ¿Qué tal si empiezas a cuestionar esas creencias?

I'm joined my Insurance and Underwriting veteran and thought leader, Nick Lamparelli, for this episode as we discuss the ideas in the new white paper I'm publishing, "The Economic Viability of Insurance," available starting today for free at http://www.future-of-insurance.com/profit. Highlights from the Show The approaches we have been using to stresses on underwriting profit historically have been cutting costs (focusing on expenses), taking rate, pulling out of markets or segments These approaches proved insufficient to deal with the scale of macro-level pressures insurers faced in 2023, and I would argue will continue to face going forward, like Severe Convective Storms (SCS, or, mainly, hail) and other Natural Catastrophes driven by Climate Change Social Inflation Supply Chain and Labor Constraints Inflation and more We should be looking at new approaches, including How we think about and respond to risk – tools we use to understand risk, select it intelligently to compete on, and harden it when we do choose to offer coverage Move to next-generation approaches to rating that are more dynamic, allowing us to stay ahead of the need for rate change rather than respond far too late and insufficiently Rethinking the products we offer to cover what have been come extremely different exposures from the ones our current products were designed for These solution can take the form of insurtech software or services; E&S/non-admitted product development; Parametric solutions to coverages no longer viable as indemnity products; and so much more Now is the time to really engage in the idea of doing things differently as we are seeing increasing difficulty in aligning prices that are affordable to buy coverage at with prices that are economically viable to sell it at, meaning the market may begin to fail to clear If that happens, other capital can come in and solve for the need for coverage, increasing the pressure insurers have seen on the decreasing percent of risks that are insured against (measured by NatCat losses that are insured vs. not), as one method) Download the paper today, and share it with your network to get more people talking about how we can push our industry ahead. Female-founder launches tech solution to save millions of hours on ESG research Each year, environmental and social specialists spend millions of hours on critical research to assess the risks and impacts of development projects around the world. While this work is essential to meet sustainability related financing requirements, the reality is a large proportion of experts' time is spent gathering huge amounts of historic data, regional statistics, policy documents, local legislation and other information, before they are even able to apply their professional analysis and judgement. Improving ESG assessments Now, a new AI-powered solution is set to revolutionise the way E&S experts work, potentially saving thousands of hours, improving accuracy and empowering experts to add value more efficiently. myESRA is the world's first automated research assistant that puts the industry's most comprehensive environmental and social specific knowledge base at the fingertips of E&S experts. myESRA's knowledge base gathers all historic project documents disclosed by development banks, regional and national statistics, lender policies and local legislation from hundreds of different sources with weekly updates. A full environmental and social impact assessment for a high-risk project can cost up to US$500,000. The biggest cost item within the project is collection of primary and secondary data - repetitive, manual tasks that typically take hours. myESRA can not only find secondary data in seconds, but also provides citation and reference to the original document or source. myESRA is the brainchild of world leading social development specialist Ildiko Almasi Simsic. After spending 15 years working on ESG projects for the likes of the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Environment Programme, she has experienced first-hand the frustrations and inefficiencies that are impeding progress in companies ESG efforts around the world. Speaking about the launch of myESRA, Ildiko Almasi Simic said: "Environmental and social risk assessments are crucial, not only for organisations, but also the communities and habitats they impact, so it seems crazy they are still so reliant on manual, time-consuming processes. I realized the industry was ready for a technology-driven transformation, so I set about developing a customized solution that uses AI technologies to free up professionals to add real value through their expert insights and analysis." myESRA is available now from its parent company, E&S Solutions. [3:59] Liz will be at RISKWORLD 2024 at the community meetup on May 6th and she will also be presenting a session in the DE&I Studio, so we're going to have a lot to talk about. I love getting these sorts of perspectives. I know you all do, too, so let's have some fun! [4:16] Liz Kramer, welcome to RIMScast! [4:24] Liz studied economics. Not wanting a desk job, after graduation, she went to Japan and taught English for a year and a half. She came back and realized she needed health insurance and a stable job so she joined Marsh and McLennan in their Japanese Client Services Division. That's when she started to learn about insurance. [5:20] Liz learned about underwriting and got into the underwriter training program at Gen Re as an E&S underwriter. After three years, Gen Re merged with an international company and Liz had the opportunity to go back to Japan, which she loved. She was in Tokyo for four years. She enjoys change and new opportunities. [7:45] Liz learned German in school and Japanese in Japan. While in Japan, she lived in Japanese and worked in English. [8:19] Liz was pretty young when she went to Japan. It was a risk being a young woman alone in the country. Her youth was a hurdle in Japan. She had support in the States, but it was tough. She learned a lot, including how to advocate for herself and how to lean on others. Her job was to build a local team to replace her, and she did. [9:43] After eight years in the business, she came back to the U.S. For 16 years, she did several things: specialty treaty, prop management, and business development. Then through a former client contact, she went to Zurich for three years in three great roles. [10:21] Someone reached out to her from Munich Re. She would report to the CEO in a new role, Chief Underwriting Officer. She joined them in 2020 and is there today, now as the President of the E&S Division. [11:32] Liz started in 1993 when the leadership teams were mostly men. She is grateful for all the managers and the men in her career who advocated for her and listened to her. She worked incredibly hard to succeed. She tells the women of APIW, don't put your head down; put your head up, network, and make connections. [12:32] When you make connections, your brand gets recognized and noticed and you learn more about what is out there. [12:56] Liz would say she still doesn't advocate enough for herself. She had a woman who is her current boss, encourage her to make the move over from the Chief Underwriting Officer back to writing a P&L. You have to step out of your comfort zone sometimes. There's an incredible amount of diverse talent in the industry. [14:14] Liz feels very blessed in her career. She doesn't get resentful about bumps in the road. When she was pregnant with her second child, 18 years ago, a manager assumed she would want to stay home with two children. But her manager's boss told her “We absolutely want you to come back.” [15:14] If you hear it from one person, it doesn't mean everyone feels that way. Still today, we have biases and make assumptions. We should always ask, instead of assuming, if we think they are capable. [15:57] RIMS plug time! They will be co-hosting their Women's Leadership Forum with NYCAIW on March 26th, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at The View at Battery Park in downtown Manhattan. The topic is “Midlife Collision.” This explores what happens when you are raising your family and caring for your parents at the same time. [18:24] The panel will be comprised of women leaders in risk and insurance who are there to support each other during this critical life event. Register at the APIW.org events page or the link in this episode's show notes. [19:00] Liz learned about APIW early in her career. She was working mostly in New York and APIW has a strong presence in the NY area. She has been a member of APIW on and off throughout her career and saw the value and benefit of it. [19:49] As a member, she was asked if she wanted to join the board and she immediately said yes. She understood what was important about what they were doing and she wanted to expand their reach and awareness, not to the big cities only but throughout the industry. She was an officer and treasurer for four years. [20:46] When she was asked about becoming president, at first she declined as she was too busy at work and didn't feel like she could commit her time to that role. After two years, she agreed to stay on the board as treasurer and take the two-year term starting in two years. She wanted to make sure she went into it prepared. They made that plan. [22:16] She has been the president since September of 2022. This September, she will pass the baton to a new president and stay on the board for another two years as “past president.” [22:38] It was important to Liz to give back to an organization that has been important to her over the years. It's fulfilling to give back and serve. Giving back gives her a better perspective. [23:39] The four pillars of APIW are 1) Learning and development, 2) Connectivity and networking, 3) Supporting DEI, and 4) Giving back. APIW networked cities give back to their local communities. When doing strategic planning, the board lives and breathes the four pillars. [25:53] Liz compares the APIW DEI vision with the RIMS DEI vision, including gender inclusion and encouraging dialog. [26:56] Liz is a huge fan of the insurance industry. She says it's a noble industry that does some great things. Her hope for women in insurance is that there continue to be numerous leadership opportunities for women who are in the industry now and that there will be more balance at senior levels. [27:31] In the U.S. workforce, 47% of the workforce are women. In the insurance industry, it's close to 60%. The industry is welcoming and attractive for women. It needs to attract more diverse talent with STEM and liberal arts backgrounds for all levels of leadership. It's a great industry and there are great opportunities for women. [29:50] Liz will be on the DE&I panel at RISKWORLD 2024 in San Diego, representing APIW. There will be a women's meetup hosted by APIW right after the panel. Liz and other APIW board members will present who APIW is and share information about it. Liz is considering talking about women and risk-taking. [31:25] Then they will go into breakout groups to hear from the attendees. Liz invites you to come. She would love to see you face to face. That's Monday the 6th. [31:52] It's been such a pleasure getting a chance to meet you, Liz! I look forward to seeing you at RISKWOLD 2024. We encourage everyone to go check out your session and the community meetup. Bobby Touran is the CEO and co-founder of Rainbow. He is a founder, CEO and operator with over 15 years of experience in insurance and software development, having previously founded Pathpoint, a digital insurance brokerage focused on retail agents and their E&S risk. Follow him on LinkedIn. Highlights from the Show Bobby is an entrepreneur, with the second half of his career being focused on insurance, including starting a digital E&S exchange, and now co-founding an MGA called Rainbow Rainbow is an MGA focused on specific niches or verticals in small commercial, using that focus to enable better underwriting and service to the space Their initial focus is on providing BOP to restaurants, which they view as an area that will always need coverage and is going through dislocation today as some traditional players have pulled back They can connect third party datasets that are super-specific to a vertical for better understanding of the risk and not just to enable faster application completion time or quote turnaround They also have expert underwriters who really understand the vertical rather than looking to automate underwriting out of the equation In terms of moving into new verticals vs. investing in growing out their first vertical of restaurants, they see plenty of room for growth in restaurants today as they add more states or deepen their distribution relationships with their agents, but they also have a rubric of sorts to help them identify where to move next in terms of new verticals Their relationships with agents and brokers and the underlying platform they've built should allow them to scale and expand efficiently without having to build it all from scratch with each new vertical The focus on a handful of codes for a given vertical helps them stay focused and clear on what they do (and don't do), and the systems, processes and skills needed to support their business They've also built their platform with modularity but also in-house so they aren't beholden to constraints of other systems or vendors They get better underwriting results through three prongs to their strategy Their system has their risk selection built in from the start so they can weed out risks they aren't positioned to underwrite quickly and early for their agents, and the criteria can be very nuanced, specific and inter-connected They have access to deep data on their vertical, and keep eyes on it over the life of a risk so they can get a truer picture of risk early and often They have experienced human underwriters, who not only look at the risks, but also provide differentiated service to their agents and brokers which is something their distribution partners call out specifically as a reason they like working with Rainbow Bobby thinks there's a lot of opportunity today, even in this investment environment, but it requires demonstrating genuinely good underwriting results at the heart of your business When some in the market run away from a space that needs to be served, Bobby sees a moment of opportunity to see if a better approach can be deployed to then successfully and profitably seize on that market dislocation This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. 0:00 -- Intro.1:38-- About this podcast's sponsor: The American College of Governance Counsel.2:34 -- Start of interview.3:13 -- Mauro's "origin story." 4:11 -- About AMEC, and his time as CEO of the organization (2012-2017). Prior, he was Chairman of IBGC (2008-2010). "My first mission as CEO of AMEC was to become the first independent director at Petrobras" (which he served from 2013 to 2015).9:02 -- On the differences between shareholder engagement/activism in the U.S. and Brazil. 10:04 -- The corporate governance changes introduced by Novo Mercado (special listings segment created in Brazil in 2000).11:39 -- About the Petrobras corruption scandal ("Lava Jato" or "Car Wash"). He was the first independent director in Petrobras (2013) and they elected a second independent director in 2014. "1+1 in that situation equals 4." "The board simply did the Government's bidding." "But it's all gone now, there has been a huge backlash. There is no one in jail anymore." "Just like what happened in Italy with the Clean Hands Operation, there is a political wave of acquittals." "There was a class action settlement in the U.S. for $3.5 billion (2016) and PwC settled for $50 million (2018)."18:58 -- His joining the board of Vale (2021-2023), post Brumadinho dam disaster (2019). "I was elected to the board as part of an activist campaign, led by Capital Group." 23:28 -- On the SEC's action against Vale for greenwashing (settled in 2023 for $55.9 million). "Vale became a lightning rod and it is a rich company in a poor country and in a poor region of a poor country." "One executive of the company used the expression that was Vale is the peacock in the Favela." "[Vale] gets a lot of attention and focus and sometimes not fairly. It does some amazing things in terms of ESG." "Vale is actually an example that responsible mining is not only essential for the energy transition, but it actually can be good for the environment. But there's a lot of bad press around it."24:40 -- His take on ESG: "ESG should not be driven by rankings, reports and ratings. It must be driven by owners."28:50 -- On the ESG backlash. "Part of the problem has to do with the architecture of the institutional investors." "The productive way for investors to ensure that companies are doing the right thing is one-on-one engagements that cannot be done wholesale. It needs to be done in a more retail way. So this increases the value of specialized asset managers that have a smaller portfolio, that may or may not be called activists."32:11 -- On joining the board of Embraer. The impact of the Pandemic and 'work from home' in Brazil.34:55 -- On the evolving geopolitical landscape, China/US tensions and where Brazil stands in this picture. 39:17 -- On the role of independent directors, and evolution in Brazil in the last 20 years:"When you get into a situation like I was in Petrobras, you need to know where your red lines are and what to do when they're reached. You can fight and in some cases it may be the case that you need to leave and do a noisy withdrawal as I've done several times in my career so.""I fear that in many situations we have lots of companies reporting larger percentages of independent directors on their boards, but these are not really independent.""[You have to] be true to your values, know your red lines, but at the same time, try to work with people. And some things will not be the way you want. So a director who simply says no when the board goes in a way that he or she doesn't agree with is not going to be productive.  So you have to, in Brazil we say we need to swallow some frogs every once in a while. You just have to watch out to make sure what are the sizes of frogs that you can swallow to make it for productive mandate on the board, but at the same time not compromising your values."43:44 -- On the question of single issue directors. "I think it's a big mistake for a number of reasons. First, because it's not enough space for all the issues to be on the boards. The other problem is that if you have a specialist on the board, say in cyber security, every time the issue of cyber security comes up, everybody will look at this guy and say, whatever he or she is telling us to do, you're outsourcing your fiduciary duty, which is terrible."45:45 -- "Brazil today has very different companies. This means that the governance structure for each one of them has to be different. And we have to understand, it's case by case, and we need to build the governance structures that are adequate to each company." "I think when we think about ESG, we're really talking about E&S, and people are forgetting the G. The G is what gets E&S done. E&S without the G is greenwashing."47:49 -- Book that has greatly influenced his life: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (2003)48:00 -- His mentors, and what he learned from them: André Jacurski and Paulo Guedes (founders of Banco Pactual).48:33 -- Quotes that he thinks of often or lives his life by: "We didn't come this far just to come this far"48:50 -- The living person he most admires: Bill Gates.Mauro Cunha is one of the top corporate governance voices in Latin America, currently serving as a director of Embraer, AES Brasil, Klabin and Hypera.
