"This piece is about where we go when we are asleep and the different states of our sleep. I began by listening to the original sound which is described by the recordist as a 360 degree recording of a waterfall. I was intrigued by the subtle changes to the sound as the microphone moves around. I decided that I would keep the recording intact as it would be very difficult to break it up. My thought then was to find something to go underneath. I began to go through my library of existing recordings – flute and other melodic instruments, to see what might work. I came across a collection of experiments I had done while ago using synth instruments and began with a low drone sound. The drone sits underneath as a constant – like a heartbeat. I added a melodic line in and began to think about the different stages of sleep – the restful deep sleep and in contrast the active REM sleep where dreams can happen. I also decided that the waterfall could also sound like waves (gentle waves lapping are often used in relaxation music so have links with sleep). I experimented with volume levels of the waterfall and created some upsurges. The only other sound is an urgent rhythm with a marimba beat which sits under these REM moments." The Longest Journey was one of the earliest games we covered for this show, way back in the winter of 2011. We'd intended to hit up its sequel, Dreamfall, because we heard good things. Now, finally, we've gotten around to playing it and... we're not impressed. The game's very strong opening gives way to a muddled story, and the shift away from a more standard point and click adventure game toward a 3D action adventure scheme does not serve it well. So, this one turns into kind of a dunkfest.

I was once the Apostle - now I'm a convicted traitor and tomorrow I die.Actually, instead of all that complication, let's talk about The Longest Journey. In this episode, we talk about what makes a good retcon, effective world building, our favourite sidekicks and Mark gets way too personal.Follow You Know What I Like...? on Twitter (@YKWILPodcast)Like You Know What I Like...? on FacebookMusic: http://www.purple-planet.comCover Art: Andrew Losq
Last week we talked about good games with rubbish tales. This week, it's the reverse - great stories with bad games attached to them. John thinks Dreamfall had an moving story about faith, alongside an awful 3D adventure interface. Katharine hates looking at the wall in Soma because the underwater robo-facility is so intriguing. And Brendan is sad that Pyre had a fiddly netball game attached to its warm tale of friendship and justice.

While all the other gaming podcasts are off flirting with trailers, we're talking about games we've been playing. Don't panic though, as we'll be joining the throng next week when all the E3 dust has settled. It's not a classic selection of games this week, but the titles we have up our sleeves include Operation Babel: New Tokyo Legacy, The Town of Light, Dreamfall Chapters, Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and, saving the best till last, Friday the 13th - The Game. Per Landin klättrar in genom ett fönster och rätt in i avsnitt 170 av Loadings Podcast – detta för att prata minnen och Nintendohat. Vi snackar även om Darksiders 3, Switch-ambitioner, Call of Duty: WWII, What Remains of Edith Finch, Little Nightmares, Dreamfall Chapters, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Kero Blaster, Fire Emblem Heroes, Heroes of the Storm 2.0 och Puyo Puyo Tetris.
