Episode Notes We were so incredibly pleased to be joined by Gabrielle Kent and Rhianna Pratchett, the co-authors of this new book in the Discworld library. Tiffany's story is one of our favorites, and having both more Tiffany and more witch stuff is just the best. Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch would make a great holiday present! We're not sure yet of a US release date, so consider buying it directly from The Discworld Emporium or Discworld.com (and if other things just sort of happen to fall into your shopping basket... well, blame the Feegles). If you want to check out the Mythical Creatures series Rhianna mentioned, keep an eye on the BBC Radio Four site as well as BBC Sounds. It looks like it starts airing December 18! Gabrielle Kent is the author of the Alfie Bloom and Knights and Bikes series. She collaborated on the Rani Reports series with her husband as Gabrielle and Satish Shewhorak. Gabrielle lives in the North East of England. She grew up in the 1980's drawing castles and dragons, reading comics, and playing videogames. In the summers, she ran wild with her brothers and cousins on her Granny's farm in Galway. Her first job was as a video-game artist working on games for PC, Playstation and XBox. She spent sixteen years as a university lecturer teaching students how to make videogames, and ran and hosted various games and animation festivals along the way. She has always loved exploring castles and in 2006 she visited Castle Coch in Wales. As she looked at a carving of The Fates over one of the fireplaces, an idea for a story crept into her head. When she got home she started typing the story of Alfie Bloom, the boy who inherited a castle and has written many more books since. Rhianna Pratchett has been a professional writer for several years. Having written numerous features and columns on games, movies and books and originally cutting her journalistic teeth on PC Zone magazine and The Guardian newspaper, Rhianna moved into script writing and narrative design in 2002. In 2007 her work on Heavenly Sword was nominated for a BAFTA and a year later she won a Writers' Guild of Great Britain 'Best Videogame Script' award for Overlord. Alongside writing for videogames, she has also authored the Tomb Raider: The Beginning comics with Dark Horse and the 6-part Mirror's Edge miniseries with DC Comics and several of her own short stories. Rhianna has contributed to various books on games narrative including Professional Techniques for Video Game Writing (Edited by: Wendy Despain) and Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames (Edited by: Chris Bateman). She also works with the IGDA Writers' Special Interest Group, the Writers' Guild of Great Britain and BAFTA Games to help improve games narrative and the lot of games writers everywhere. Rhianna currently lives in London, with a couple of neurotic tabbies. True to British form, she drinks a lot of tea. Welcome to the Best Games Ever show Episode 52: the best game with a ginger protagonist. Cal Kestis of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor is just the latest in a long line of Gaming Redheads, an esteemed group that includes such celebrated characters as Official Femshep, Joanna Dark, and what's-her-face out of Heavenly Sword. And it makes me swell with pride to see this proud tradition continuing. Listen. I'm not even a proper ginger, but my beard has the reddish hue of muddled European stock, and I look a bit auburn with edge lighting, so I think that basically makes me part of the ginger community. Therefore I can confidently say that growing up ginger, especially in the UK, is a mixed bag. As prejudices go, it's a fairly innocuous one to be at the receiving end of: mostly just daft banter, nothing particularly harrowing or sinister. But you are relentlessly considered fair game. Barely a day goes by where you don't hear a joke about gingers on the TV. It's a feature of your genetics that marks you out for endless ribbing and bullying, but it so rarely tips over into anything more sinister that it feels almost petty to complain about it. It's not remotely like living as part of a minority that experiences real prejudice, racism, or persecution. And so, the Ginger Experience is sort of like living with a permanently stuck sneeze: a source of perennial bother that you can't do anything about. Where we are endowed with enormous privilege, though, is in representation in the media. Loads of the coolest people alive are gingers. Bryce Dallas Howard, Conan O'Brien, Shirley Manson, Michael friggin' Fassbender? The list is endless. Nicole Kidman, there's another one. Damien Lewis. Ed, er, Ed Sheeran. Um. Ignore that one, we're not claiming him. The point is, gingers do pretty well in the media, and enjoy much more positive representation than plenty of other minority groups. This holds double true for the world of video games, where you can't swing a sporran without smacking a dozen ginger protagonists. There are more ginger video game characters than there are people in Wales. Probably. I haven't done the numbers. For a group that makes up less than two percent of the global population, we do extraordinarily well at getting ourselves on screen. But which is the best game with a Ginger protagonist? Our panellists, as we've discussed, have a bounty of options for this one. But which redheaded games stand above the rest? And how exactly is everyone interpreting the word "ginger"? Who, out of Kelsey, Connor, and Tom, is going to be this week's biggest smart-arse? In order to find out, you need to watch or listen to this podcast here.

Let's rock, baby! Season 6 of Video Gameography gets stylish as we examine the Devil May Cry series! Over the next few weeks, we'll be covering the history and lore of Capcom's premiere action franchise. Today we examine the franchise's boldest, most divisive, but arguably strongest entry yet in DmC Devil May Cry. Desiring to shake up the series, Capcom turned to British studio Ninja Theory to reboot and reimagine Devil May Cry. Encouraged by the publisher to be as wildly creative as possible, the team behind Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West dreamed up a grittier version of Dante who inhabits Limbo City, a world existing in parallel with the demonic realm. This relationship spectacularly manifests in the city itself coming to life, shifting its buildings and roads to hinder and assault the demon slayer. Sporting jet black hair and the ability to tap into angelic and demonic powers, this new vision of Dante garnered heaps of vitriol from fans who saw DmC as too drastic of a departure, despite the game launching to rave reviews. In this episode, we'll examine how DmC came to be, the role Capcom played in the game's wildest ideas, Hideaki Itsuno's reaction to the project, the backlash Ninja Theory endured, and give our overall impressions of the narrative and gameplay. Join hosts Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), former GI editor John Carson (@John_Carson), and with special guest Bob Buel (@bobbbackwards) of the 99 Questions podcast as we unpack and pay respects to Ninja Theory's memorable stab at Devil May Cry. Blockade Entertainment went to Sony with a dream. “What if,” they said, “we took one of your lesser PS3 exclusive games and used old existing game assets to make a big budget movie?” Sony said “let's do it!” and fished around in their couch cushions for enough money to slap this together on the cheap using a third string Korean animation studio. What we have is 2014's Heavenly Sword, based on the 2007 game that no one remembered even at the time. Nariko (Anna Torv) is an orphan part of a nomadic group of warriors tasked with protecting the “Heavenly Sword,” a powerful sword that is magic or something. But evil King Bohan (Alfred Molina, NOT Andy Serkis as IMDb claims. Serkis voiced him in the game) has made a pact with the Raven God and wants the sword to do evil things. Bohan attacks the group's base (I thought they were nomadic?) and Nariko is tasked with finding her long lost brother Loki (Thomas Jane), who is the chosen one and can use Heavenly Sword powers to defeat Bohan. Nariko goes on her quest with Kai (Ashleigh Ball) a violent little girl who turns out to be her sister. Also it turns out her dad is the group's leader Master Shen (Nolan North) who hates girls.

In our 72nd podcast we interviewed Ricky Wood who is currently a Principal Animator at the newly formed, People Can Fly NY. Ricky has been animating games since 2003 and has helped ship 5 action packed titles - Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey To The West, DmC: Devil May Cry, Just Cause 3 and Just Cause 4. He got his start in games at Ninja Theory, during the pre-production phase of Heavenly Sword. Ricky's work quickly became the benchmark of quality within the company, where he spent over 10 years honing his skill as a combat, creature and action cinematic animator. Creating high quality content was one half of his responsibility there, the other was mentoring the team to achieve their very best.

Welcome to Xbox Game Passengers. Every other Wednesday, host Derek and a guest will dissect and discuss just one game available on Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service, which was chosen for them completely at random. Whether it’s a magical or a horrible experience, they’ll force themselves through it, share their thoughts, and let you know whether or not the game is worth your time! At the end of each episode, they’ll also randomly select the game for the following show. In this episode, Mike returns to break down 2017’s lauded adventure title, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. It’s a much different experience than either host expected and… they spend far too much time wondering if the world will ever see a sequel as they recorded this episode just days before Senua’s Saga was revealed. From the makers of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry, comes a warrior’s brutal journey into myth and madness. Set in the Viking age, a broken Celtic warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover. Created in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will pull you deep into Senua’s mind. We’ve had a blast making Xbox Game Passengers so far, and we really hope that you’re enjoying it too! If you have any feedback for us, we’d love to hear it at derek@geekscape.net. Anything you listeners can do to help spread the word about the podcast would be immensely appreciated — from sharing it on social media like Facebook or Twitter, to leaving us five stars (or even a review) on Apple Podcasts, to sending it to a single friend, it can all make a massive difference! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we take a bonus trip to discuss a more modern game in Devil May Cry 5. We especially note how much they capture the feeling of the original game, despite modernizing some aspects. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: The first few hours Issues covered: cramming everything Devil May Cry into Devil May Cry 5, iterating on a formula and delivering the same feel, pulling the Resident Evil series along, iterations in camera, having the same feeling of play but with lower effort, feeling cool even outside the cutscenes, the reward of spectacle, risk/rewards and timing and breakers, translating enemies to the modern era, the addition of the grapple action of a breaking arm, teaching you to grapple and incorporating it into a boss fight, the story catch-up at the main menu, going back and forth in time, fighting with a motorcycle, opening credits sequence, tight franchise identity, being happy with the sequel, high level of craft, lack of maturity in the women characters, Barbie-Dolling the bodies, being careless with stereotypes and archetypes, lock and key and self-awareness, Dante's styles, fan service, Brett's Book Minute, using difficulty to train the player for higher difficulty levels, different ways to address turn-based vs real-time goals, trading off the cerebral for the immediate or vice versa, being too nit-picky about the details. [School of Everything Else 2018] We're back on video games with a very intriguing commission. This one takes the form of a third-person action adventure with some protracted puzzling elements, but underneath the format there is a dark and upsetting, remarkably sensitive story about the nightmarish challenges that sometimes have to be faced when a person is suffering from psychosis. Made by Ninja Theory, the dev team behind Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, DMC and Disney Infinity 3.0 this game does things with its soundscape that very few others do. If you've not played it this show might still be a good place to start because you might either find it frustrating or alarming to play or else miss quite a bit as you barge through the many horned enemies. WARNING: This one gets heavy and maybe even frightening. Guest: Doctor Lorin Grieve from Year of Steam
There are games to be played, so the GameBytes Show Team has ASSEMBLED! (Except for Jeremy.) What games have we played, For Great Justice? It’s always a pleasure to welcome a directorial debutant to Soundtracking – what with their entirely fresh take on the art of source music and score. Not that Andy Serkis is a novice when it comes to cinema. As an actor, he played Gollum in Lord Of The Rings and Caesar in the Planet Of The Apes franchise, with roles in the new Star Wars and Black Panther to come soon. He also brilliantly captured the essence of troubled troubadour Ian Dury in Sex & Drugs & Rock N Roll, which was directed by our good friend Mat Whitecross. Indeed it’s thanks to Mat you’ll get to hear Andy’s version of My Old Man from the film – after his editor Marc dug out a copy for us. Andy’s first major foray behind the camera is Breathe. Starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, Breathe tells the story of Robin Cavendish, who was given three months to live after being paralysed from the neck down by polio at the age of 28. He became a pioneering advocate for the disabled and travelled the world with his wife, Diana Blacker, in the hope of transforming the lives of others like him. Since Robin's son Jonathan is Andy's partner at their production and motion capture company, Imaginarium, he had a deeply personal connection to the narrative. This extended to the music, which was composed by his friend, Nitin Sawhney. Now while this is Andy's first job in charge of an actual feature film, he previously directed the cutaway scenes for video game, Heavenly Sword. And who did he get to score that? None other than Nitin, of course ...
On its own, Heavenly Sword is a fairly mediocre and badly animated CG movie. Contextualized, it's AMAZINGLY awful. What they managed to do while having access to the source material is an incredible testament to how badly you can screw up when you clearly don't give a damn.

You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost). Live from Mossdeep City, it's the segment nobody asked for!The fall marches on, but we still had time to squeeze a few more words out of your friendly neighborhood editor before the deluge of November. New Business opens with Stephen following up last episode's odd Netflix selection of Wakfu by playing the massively multiplayer SRPG that inspired it. A brief Smash 3DS update gives the crew an excuse to go over the 50+ Things That Make Smash 3DS Obsolete special, and then Stephen doubles back to finish with a Tales of Graces f update. Donald has another demo to talk about in the form of the special Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire demo of no MegaSteelix before starting a two-part exploration of Platinum with the thing they took to keep the lights on, Legend of Korra. Austen wrapped Alien Isolation and after some ultra-violent brief things, needed to unwind... with Peggle 2, of all things. Cue screaming.Following Now Posted, the rumor was Whatcha Watchin' would be brief. And if you believe that, you also believe it's about [censored]. On tap; Stephen's Devil is a Part Timer, Deadman Wonderland and Arrow, Austen's The Flash and Heavenly Sword while Donald passed for time.Well, time and the feature. In an effort to get Donald to have something on the waveform, we opened the floor to all of you for an Ask Me Anything segment. And some of you actually delivered. As a result, there's a near-half hour of grilling Donald on subjects far and wide. For time reasons, we had to cut a few questions, which Donald helpfully took to the blog to answer. Following that, it's an extra large helping of Mushrooms because some returning champions done goofed hard. Our next appearance will be live and for the kids, but only with your help! Head on over to the main page for the NWR Live Podcast Telethon for Child's Play and give what you can to a worthy cause before November 8! Just because we have $2k at press time doesn't mean you can make Tim Hudson do all the work! This podcast was recorded on October 26 and edited by Donald Theriault. All music/clips used under fair use provisions. Bayonetta 2 ended up digital for reasons we would prefer to not get into.
“Goddess of War” – Coming off the God of War “high”, Mike and Ben embark on another hack ‘n slash adventure with the stoic heroine, Nariko. Heavenly Sword came out roughly a year after the initial launch of the PS3 (2007). The 2007 release came right after the first God of War entry. (Starting to understand why we chose this game?) *Nudge* *Nudge*. The guys draw comparisons, emphasize and admire the visuals, and believe the ambition from Ninja Theory is endearing. Prior to the review, Mike and Ben discuss the immaturely titled game, Hatred, which has garnered copious amounts of unwelcoming reactions. Enjoy!

When Heavenly Sword was released in 2007, there was one word that everyone seemed to have on the edge of their tongues, "cinematic." That word as never been truer as Heavenly Sword makes it's way to the non-interactive screen as a movie. [Digital Drift 2014] For this episode we are very proud to interview writer Rhianna Pratchett. She has worked on some of our favourite games, and very specifically helped to craft some of the best female characters in the medium. Her experience includes Heavenly Sword, Overlord, Mirror's Edge, BioShock Infinite, Viking: Battle for Asgard, Prince of Persia, Risen, Thief and perhaps most notably she was instrumental in transforming Lara Croft from Mary-Sue, gun-toting tit-machine to the far more real person she represents today in 2013's Tomb Raider. We talk at length about her past experiences and connections, the requirements for a writer in the world of gaming, female/female relationships in narrative, Conan the Barbarian, and of course Time Bandits. Her website can be found here: http://www.rhiannapratchett.com/

THis week we attempt to scratch the mountain that is the GameCritics.com backlog by getting to some of those titles that we've always *wanted* to play, but never made the time for. Now, we have made the time, at least for three of the games. The crew dishes on I Am Alive, Sleeping Dogs, and Heavenly Sword, and more, plus a What We've Been Playing roundtable. Featuring Sinan Kubba, Chi Kong Lui, Brad Gallaway, and Richard Naik.
02:06:15 - Afsluiting

Act 1 of Heavenly Sword.
[Digital Gonzo 2012] To celebrate Halloween I'm reviewing Monster House, one of the few movies ever put out by ImageMovers Digital. It uses an identical performance capture technique to the Uncharted series, Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and The Last of Us. This is a technique that usually freaks people out because of the Uncanny Valley, less so in games because we're used to seeing CG modeling but in the cinema people wonder why they're not just looking at real people. This is the most stylised of IMD's catalog. They wisely make the character models more cartoonish and slightly claymation-looking which is easier to accept in the brainpan. Joining me for this review are Neil Taylor of GameBurst and Jerome McIntosh of the Gonzo Planet community. The plot runs thus: DJ, a young lad in an American suburb, watches the house across the street, the only occupant being a creepy, angry old man. There's something funny going on inside and DJ is determined to find out what. It's Halloween and his parents are going away, leaving him with a babysitter, which is embarrassing because he is on the cusp of growing up. His tubby, exuberant and scaredy-cat friend Chowder wants to go trick or treating one last time which DJ considers them now a bit too old for. And a smug, preppy swot of a girl named Jenny comes calling, selling cookies like a pro. All of them end up fixated on this house and what could be inside. That Halloween night they find out. If you like The Goonies, Stand By Me or other 80′s adventures that don't patronise the kids and have them talking like real people (Super 8 is another one even though it's made in 2011 and set in 1979), you will love this. It's a little bit too scary for young kids if you have them so watch it first. There are some great moments of comedy and a fantastic atmosphere of exploration. Also it's got a solid emotional core. Ultimately it's a story about growing up and what you have to leave behind. Guests: Neil Taylor of TheKiddDogg Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst
