Ep.522 – SAG Episode 522: SAG Cartoon Express - Misadventure of Mighty Plumber

On this week's podcast, Dan, Kris, and Dean board the SAG Cartoon Express for a visit to the classic animated series The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. This wretched cartoon pits everyone's favorite plumbers against King Koopa's neweast ally, Mighty Plumber, A TV Action hero that he somehow tricks into thinking Mario and Luigi are the bad guys. It's terrible, but is it at least fun? What exactly are the logistics of the windows in this show? Why are there surf rock songs sung by the Koopa Kids? Who knows? At the top of the show, Dan's health concerns continue, but he's at least a few steps closer to getting answers. While he navigates the US healthcare system, he's playing through all the mainline Metroid games, or at least he would be if he could find his copy of Samus Returns. Meanwhile, Dean spent some quality time with some Vampire Survivors-like games, Castle Crashers, and Another Crab's Treasure, which is apparently a lot tougher than it sounds. Kris, though, spent a ton of time with NSO, playing through Cobra Triangle, stressing out over Wario's Woods, and actually enjoying Donkey Kong Jr. Math?!? Finally, in Week Old News, chair tossing finds its way into the competitive Mortal Kombat scene, an old Satellaview promotional VHS gets remastered in HD, someone tries to sell The Guy Game at TooManyGames, and more. We're bringing back our Q&A episode, and this time around, we're dedicating the whole show to Metroid: Samus Returns! We're answering your questions, such as: despite it being a great game, is Samus Returns a great remake? Could Aeion abilities have regenerated the same way as in Dread, or would that have made them OP? Is the Surface theme truly an iconic song? Was the inclusion of the Baby Metroid one of the smartest ideas in the series? Is there still a chance Samus Returns could end up on Switch? Do we prefer Fusion difficulty to Dread difficulty? It's a bittersweet week for us here at Omega Metroid, as the long suspected but recently confirmed demise of E3 was made official. Instead of being sad that E3 is over, however, the fellas decide to be glad that it happened and take a two hour trip down memory lane reminiscing about Metroid's finest moments at the gaming showcase. From the highest of high's - Ridley debuting in Smash Bros., Reggie's introduction of the DS and Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime 4's reveal, and the resurrection of Metroid Dread - to the lowest of lows - Federation Force's disastrous reveal, Samus Returns skipping the main show, multiple years of no Metroid to begin E3's life - we glance over it all. Come pour one out with us for E3, and check out Doom's E3 notes here (complete with links to all trailers and reveals!). All this, plus some other memories of Zelda, Halo, the Revolution, and more! Inspired By Metroid returns, this time, to a post apocalyptic world where humanity is no more and only robots remain! We're playing Haiku, The Robot, a Game-Boy-Color-influenced Metroidvania from developer Mister Morris games and giving our thoughts on the games world, story, boss fights, and so much more! Playing as the cute robot Haiku, you could be the answer to a mysterious virus that's plagued the planet for years. Does Haiku, The Robot rise above and carve out a place for itself among the best Metroidvania's available on the Switch, or does the games virus prove to be its undoing? Come hang out with us to find out! All this, PLUS some Twilight talk and getting ready for next week's Mapping Metroid when we finally journey to Samus Returns' SR388! PLEASE NOTE - We had an audio snafu in this episode with Andy's mic settings, so unfortunately his voice sounds a bit robotic (fitting!), so our sincerest apologies for this! Does Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon being ported from 3DS set a precedent that Samus Returns could potentially follow? How about Pikmin 1 and 2 being released as digital games Could we see Metroid Prime Echoes and Corruption follow a similar path? More importantly, based on what we didn't see, does this put the final nail in the coffin of Metroid Prime 4 being, at the very least, a Switch-exclusive title, as all signs point toward it launching on Nintendo's next console? Definitive Ranking is back for a brand new installment focused on Samus's first new (at the time) 2D Metroid game in over a decade, the apply named Metroid: Samus Returns! We're breaking it down, discussing the categories and topics such as: did the gameplay innovations made in Samus Returns land, or were they a little undercooked? Although the music was decent, you barely hear the best tracks, so can we rate music highly? Does the focus on combat take away from the atmosphere intended by the original Metroid II game? What's up with that brown/yellow filter the whole game has? All this and so much more discussed as we break down Samus's 3DS adventure in one of our longest shows yet. Come play along, and as always, here's the criteria for the Definitive Rankings: World / Atmosphere (the vibe, the setting, the mood) Art Style (design of Samus, the enemies, the graphics in general) Story (what works, what doesn't) Pacing / Progression (are there any parts that really bog the player down, or is it still fun getting lost?) Gameplay / “Gimmick” (what new or different gameplay aspects we like) Items / Abilities (how are the powerups and are they cool and practical) Areas (how does each individual area look, feel, play, etc.) Enemies / Bosses (are they fun, creative, etc.) Expansions / Powerups (are the expansions hidden throughout the world fun, creative, and enjoyable to collect?) Music (are we humming along?) Of course, all of these are subjective, and we're putting our critics hats on, but we want to hear what you have to say on Twitter!   Visit OmegaMetroid.com!   Subscribe!

A bit of a change of pace for this episode. It's not often a great new Metroid game comes out, so we've pulled together three dudes who've played through Samus Returns for review for a full on special spoilercast. Don't worry, we sound the official Spoiler Horn before going into anything you might not want to know before playing. Don't worry, we didn't forget the Nintendo Direct from the other day either, we went through a bunch of the more interesting tidbits of information from that as well before diving into Metroid chat. It hasn't been long since our last show, but Jeremy and "Meat Dale" return, as is our custom (among others) to share with you our video game playings for this week! Dale starts off with the new Metroid Samus Returns on 3DS, and as much as we can recollect of how it stacks up to the original. He finishes Dishonored 2 and gives his thoughts, as well as ruminating on Diablo 3, and when the bartender is required to take away your keys. Jeremy chimes in with Mecho Tales, the twin-stick platforming sequel to Mecho Wars and Desert Ashes that nobody expected. Listen in! It’s that time again. Prep your build orders, hold on to you hype and get ready for the latest episode of the Rogues Portal Gaming Podcast: Not Enough Resources! Now Playing Dylan is trying to narrow down his class in Dungeon Runners, but is glad the Hearthstone Meta is starting to even itself out after the latest expansion. Meanwhile, Ryan is excited to be playing a new Metroid game, Samus Returns, even if there are some odd design choices. Expect his full review mid-next week. News Nintendo reveals that Mario is not as Italian as we all thought in the latest Super Mario Odyssey Trailer, showing that the supposed Italian Plumber definitely man-scapes. All joking aside, it is great that Nintendo is focusing on the whimsy fun that only gaming can bring. Other Switch goodies include the fact that both Doom and Wolfenstein II are coming to Nintendo's platform. This is good news for anyone looking for a strong presence of AAA third party games on the Switch. Competitive Corner The big discussion this week has to do with Africa. Both Waypoint and Kotaku posted some great looks at how the infrastructure of the continent is holding back gaming from the masses throughout Africa. Dylan is excited to see some fresh faces in League of Legends now that the NALCS has finished up their Summer Split.
