Paul McVerry is an experienced cattleman and a stud breeder, who had a wild vision to fly a gift of cattle to India with the help of winemaker Dan Murphy. (R)New Zealand-born cattleman Paul McVerry has been surrounded by animals his whole life, and not just in cattle pens or in sheep yards.Paul has accompanied thoroughbred horses on weeks-long ship journeys across the Pacific ocean. He's been stuck with prized bulls in the back of a truck going the wrong way down Broadway in New York City. After being with animals on land-bound vehicles and sea-faring vessels, eventually Paul thought, "Cows can fly."In the 1970s, thousands of cattle were being slaughtered in Victoria and southern New South Wales because of ongoing drought. At the same time, the dairy industry in India was struggling due to generations of inbreeding.Paul saw an opportunity to solve both problems, and loaded the world's first ever airborne cattle onto a stretch D68 at Tullamarine Airport, bound for Chennai. This episode of Conversations explores farming, agriculture, epic journeys, foreign aid, animal welfare, animal transport, charity work, Mother Teresa, India, Tullamarine airport, Melbourne, Darwin, Chennai, Hong Kong, travel, plane travel, aeroplanes, airplanes, weird cargo, genetics, cross-breeding animals, diverse gene pool, insemination.
In 1882, thousands of sheep set off from a property in Western Victoria. Their destination was a huge station in the Northern Territory, land which a sheep had never set foot on. To get there, these animals and their drover battled drought, flood, famine and doubt

The term 'horse-power' may have come about as a marketing tool to sell steam engines in the 1770s, but for the biennial Eidsvold Cattle Drive in country Queensland it's still literal. Using horses to move cattle into town, they're raising money for charity at the same time. In age of urbanisation it could be easy to forget the role horses play in our food supply chain, or the careers on offer working with them, like becoming an outback horse trainer. On the eve of a planned trial of driverless trucks, it shows just how far moving goods around Australia has come.
It's a long and slow process, but one outback droving team are walking 2000 head from the Gulf to the central west and taking advantage of the feed along the states stock route.

Joining me for this episode is filmmaker George Popov. George is half of the creative partnership behind Rubicon Films, who since 2022 have released a series of paranormal themed documentaries under the title of ‘Sideworld'. To quote George, a sideworld exists “where the line between fact and fiction is enshrouded in mist and shadow, and beyond that threshold is a place that can change our perspective on everything we think we know.” The three Sideworld documentaries made so far have explored the haunted forests of England, terrors of the sea, and English villages with ghostly reputations. Prior to that, Rubicon made two feature films - Hex in 2017 and The Droving in 2020, which both include folk horror themes and fortean subjects. In the interview I begin by talking with George about his interests in the paranormal and filmmaking, and the relationship they have had as part of his career. From there we go on to discuss the Sideworld documentaries and some of the subjects they cover, as and explore how these sorts of things represent the sideworld concept itself. More information about George's films can be found at https://www.rubiconfilms.co.uk/. You can support the upkeep of Some Other Sphere with a donation via Ko-fi. To buy the podcast a coffee go to https://ko-fi.com/someotherspherepodcast. Thank you! The Some Other Sphere theme is from Purple Planet Music - 'Hubbub' by Geoff Harvey and Chris Martyn.
E.L. King interviews special guest George Popov, director of the folk horror documentary series SIDEWORLD. Bulgarian-born Popov has been revered for his unique visual style and carefully crafted atmosphere. The SIDEWORLD series currently has three installments, Haunted Forests of England, Terrors of the Sea, and Damnation Village. Each explores a trove of frightening tales, myths, and folklore. George's early impact on British cinema is an exciting sign of things to come, with his work ‘Hex' (2017) and ‘The Droving' (2020) featured in Rob Young's book 'The Magic Box: Viewing Britain through the rectangular window', a catalog and exploration of culturally defining British films and television, labeled "Terrific" and "A lucid and patriotic guided tour" by the New York Times. Both films also received glowing reviews from top UK film critic and writer for Empire Magazine, Kim Newman, who praised the films for breathing life into the folk horror genre. You can #SlayAwayWithUs for new episodes on Fridays as we chat about lore, gore, the inspiration behind your favorite horror films, and every kill in between with special guests. At first glance you might think that we have Daniel Craig on the show this week. In actual fact, we are talking to the brilliant Bond lookalike and actor John Love! John's passion for film is clear to see as he picks his dream Bond, co-star, villain, director and theme song. Not satisfied with his success imitating Daniel Craig, John also takes on the challenge of impersonating another iconic actor with a very specific accent… We also talk about some of John's recent work, including The Droving, and hear a little bit about what life is like for someone who looks so much like 007. In tonight's episode, we are joined by director George Popov. Having recently reviewed both Hex and The Droving and diving deep into the themes of these movies (both of which resulted in discussions that were longer than the films themselves), we were incredibly excited to dig even further into his films! Both of his films (Hex and The Droving) take a supernatural story and place it within the context of a very natural world, focusing more on the role that faith and belief (and trauma, guilt, and isolation) have on the decisions we make, rather than focusing on the supernatural elements themselves. The gorgeous locations, hauntingly beautiful music, and solid acting make George's films captivating enough....but it is the thematic elements (and the way that he handles them in such a way that they are incredibly relatable and endlessly discussable) that truly give life to his films! So brew some coffee, clear your schedule, and join us for our interview with George Popov! Video Monsters is brought to you by the Chattanooga Film Festival and Central Cinema in Knoxville, TN. Tonight's episode is about Hex (2017), directed by George Popov. Having recently covered The Droving, and with our interview with George Popov coming up soon, it only makes sense for us to also review his first feature film. Much like The Droving, Hex takes a supernatural story and places it within the context of a very natural world. Set during the English Civil War, two opposing soldiers are stuck in a forest as they struggle to reconcile their conflict with each other, with themselves, and with with a witch (whose presence is what has trapped them, but also what is intensifying their struggle). Again, much like The Droving, the focus of Hex is less on the supernatural element and more about how faith, conviction, and guilt has a profound impact on their current situation. Hex is not a fast-paced, action/horror heavy movie - it is a film that is driven by themes that are handled in such a way that they are incredibly relatable and endlessly discussable. So grab your plant-based religious iconography, have a crisis of faith, and watch your back as you meet us at the old church ruins for our review of Hex!! High lead levels have been detected in a herd of cattle near the Flinders Ranges, after the animals started going blind, staggering, tilting their heads and dying.
Tonight's episode is about The Droving (2020) - a story of loss, grief, trauma, revenge, and the role that one's belief has in how they cope with their suffering. Without giving too much away, this film is essentially a cult movie without the cult. The Droving has many of the tropes of a cult film (mysterious disappearance, traditional festival, folklore, discrepancy between the mundane aspects of daily life and the supernatural elements of belief), but focuses primarily on Martin (Daniel Oldroyd) and his emotional journey set forth by the beliefs of another. At only 80 minutes, this film quickly gets to the point - which helps to keep the focus on "what will happen next?" rather than lingering on the mystery of what happened in the past. The great performances of this small cast bring an intimacy to this film what will keep you engaged and give you a LOT to discuss by the end (at least, we certainly had plenty to discuss....)!!
