I've got a joke that I've been doing in the show the last few nights about how the airport in Warsaw is called the 'Frederic Chopin International Airport', like that's how much of a big deal this guy is - they don't name airports after anyone! Who's Tullamarine, you know? After the second show I'd done that joke, someone messaged me and told me that actually Tullamarine was an indigenous freedom fighter in the area, and that's why they named it after him. Pretty brutal that I don't even know the guy's name, and that he's so unknown that a joke about Melbourne's airport not being named after someone can literally use his name as a working punchline. So I've decided to add, as a tag, that someone contacted me and told me that, and now I feel really bad, but I'm still doing the joke. So yeah, that's why the pod is named what it is. Heaps of other cool shit happened this week, but if you want to know about any of that, you'll just have to pop your little headphones in and have a listen, won't you!

Paul McVerry is an experienced cattleman and a stud breeder, who had a wild vision to fly a gift of cattle to India with the help of winemaker Dan Murphy. (R)New Zealand-born cattleman Paul McVerry has been surrounded by animals his whole life, and not just in cattle pens or in sheep yards.Paul has accompanied thoroughbred horses on weeks-long ship journeys across the Pacific ocean. He's been stuck with prized bulls in the back of a truck going the wrong way down Broadway in New York City. After being with animals on land-bound vehicles and sea-faring vessels, eventually Paul thought, "Cows can fly."In the 1970s, thousands of cattle were being slaughtered in Victoria and southern New South Wales because of ongoing drought. At the same time, the dairy industry in India was struggling due to generations of inbreeding.Paul saw an opportunity to solve both problems, and loaded the world's first ever airborne cattle onto a stretch D68 at Tullamarine Airport, bound for Chennai. This episode of Conversations explores farming, agriculture, epic journeys, foreign aid, animal welfare, animal transport, charity work, Mother Teresa, India, Tullamarine airport, Melbourne, Darwin, Chennai, Hong Kong, travel, plane travel, aeroplanes, airplanes, weird cargo, genetics, cross-breeding animals, diverse gene pool, insemination.
Mark Carter (pictured) from Flight Free Australia was clearly the first person to call when it was announced that Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport would receive Federal Government cash to make the complex's third runway a reality. A story in The Melbourne Age - "Melbourne Airport's $3 billion third runway cleared for take-off" - told of this development. Mark explains how his group draws inspiration and sustenance from the European organization, "Stay Grounded" and is affiliated with the locally-based group, "Climate Action Network Australia". High-speed rail is an alternative to flying and one view can be read in an article on The Conversation by Phillip Laird, "High-speed rail plans may finally end Australia's 40-year wait to get on board". The Geelong-based, "The Sustainable Hour" talked with Mark earlier in the year and this episode of "Climate Conversations" includes the audio from that interview, which happened before the confirmation announcement of the the third runway.

Julia was an architect, her passion had led her to working on international projects that were creating spaces that could inspire people and make the world a better place through design. She began to obsess over the materials they were using to build these projects. She couldn't bring herself past the amount of petroleum-based plastic wrap that was being used, even on low-carbon embodied projects. She met her now-husband Jordy, who at the time was working on his own business growing and selling organic and biodynamic wines from South-West Victoria.Their business, Great Wrap is revolutionising the products we use at home in our kitchens as well as pallet wrap, which, subsequently goes on nearly every product that's produced ever, at some stage in its life.Great Wrap takes potato waste and through a sophisticated process turns it into a cling wrap that can be used for keeping household items fresh and keep items that are placed on pallets together and dry during transport. Their product is completely home compostable, meaning that it will break down in the soil into carbon and water. I loved my time with them out at their factory in Tullamarine in Melbourne, I learnt a lot from them about start-up business, and the difference between the types of 'degradables', and left feeling so inspired by what these two have achieved and will go on to achieve. 4 days following the US election, I have a chat with an American who works for their Government!"It's an odd country in many ways, and there's people that take great offence at certain things, yet those same people don't take offence at other things so go figure!"Politics will not be the main focus of the chat... do you know anyone who thinks politics really makes them ultimately HAPPY? :-)Joan's trip to Australia this week left her with a lasting, inspirational memory before she even left the aeroplane at Tullamarine. She sheds tears just thinking about it - utterly joyful! Her radio career kicked off in the 70s - twenty of those years working with Voice of America - and has some amazing stories of artists she's interviewed, scandals she's reported, audiences she's helped. Over that career, she's used many different 'radio names' or aliases. Joan / Casey / Catherine / JJ et al shares the stories of many of those throughout this chat. Much like David Bowie, Joan says "you make up a character, it's not you. That person can do anything." Totally liberating! Performing as a character was a useful method of overcoming shyness, which is a useful tip for anyone."I'm sorry this is such a long story..." haha it was great to be able to meet someone for the first time and have such a flowing conversation - believe me, this podcast could be much longer if I allowed it!What makes you happy?
