From March 20, 2024: Since World War II, the United States and its currency, the dollar, have come to play a central role in the broader global economy. And in recent decades, policymakers have used this role as a weapon, cutting off access to malign actors and punishing those who act contrary to U.S. national security interests. But cultivating such primacy has proven to be a double-edged sword, with more complicated ramifications for many Americans. In her new book “Paper Soldiers: How the Weaponization of the Dollar Changed the World Order,” Bloomberg reporter Saleha Mohsin digs into the history of the dollar's role in the global economy and what its increasing weaponization may mean moving forward. Lawfare Senior Editor Scott R. Anderson recently joined Mohsin to discuss her new book and what we should all know about the new economic and political moment we are living through. Electrifying Indonesia: Technology and Social Justice in National Development (U Wisconsin Press, 2023) tells the story of the entanglement of politics and technology during Indonesia's rapid post-World War II development. As a central part of its nation-building project, the Indonesian state sought to supply electricity to the entire country, bringing transformative socioeconomic benefits across its heterogeneous territories and populations. While this project was driven by nationalistic impulses, it was also motivated by a genuine interest in social justice. The entanglement of these two ideologies-nation-building and equity-shaped how electrification was carried out, including how the state chose the technologies it did. Private companies and electric cooperatives vied with the hegemonic state power company to participate in a monumental undertaking that would transform daily life for all Indonesians, especially rural citizens. In this innovative volume, Anto Mohsin brings Indonesian studies together with science and technology studies to understand a crucial period in modern Indonesian history. He shows that attempts to illuminate the country were inseparable from the effort to maintain the new nation-state, chart its path to independence, and legitimize ruling regimes. In exchange for an often dramatically improved standard of living, people gave their votes, and their acquiescence, to the ruling government. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep#108 Dr. Sameen A. Mohsin Ali is an Assistant Professor of International Development at the University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on the impact of bureaucratic politics on state capacity and service delivery. She is particularly interested in the dynamics of bureaucratic reform, the implementation and impact of donor programs, and the intersection of party politics, citizens' interests, and bureaucratic incentives. Exploring cases from Pakistan and Nepal, Sushav and Sameen delve into the dynamic relationships between politicians and bureaucrats. In doing so, they imagine bureaucracy in a decentralized context, discuss ways of navigating bureaucratic embeddedness, corruption, and efficiency, and explore how to plan bureaucratic reforms. The conversation offers a nuanced perspective on the complexities of governance and the critical forces that shape public administration in developing countries. Like listening to PODS? The talk on the street is all about electric cars and scooters as Indonesia strives to become a regional centre for manufacturing electric vehicles. At the heart of that goal is constructing a national supply chain of locally built battery hubs to drive the transition to electric. But as my current guest reminds us, harnessing electricity has always been at the centre of Indonesia's dreams of development. Indeed, the very establishment of PLN, Indonesia's ubiquitous state electricity company, was part of a wider nation building project to create a prosperous and socially just Indonesia. To talk about the role of electricity in the forging of Indonesia, Dr Anto Mohsin chats with Jacqui Baker. Anto is an assistant professor in the Liberal Arts at North-Western University in Qatar. In 2024, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University, Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales, Dr Jemma Purdey from Monash University and Tito Ambyo from RMIT.

Effective bureaucracies are pivotal in mobilizing resources, implementing development projects, and ensuring equitable distribution of growth benefits across all societal segments. Conversely, weak administrative systems often result in inefficiency, corruption, and the derailment of vital development efforts aimed at improving health, education, and economic opportunities. The significance of administrative capacity extends beyond immediate program implementation. Strong administrative systems ensure that the achievements of development policies are maintained over time, adapting to new challenges like technological changes, demographic shifts, and environmental sustainability. This adaptability is essential for long-term development outcomes, making the strengthening of bureaucratic institutions a fundamental aspect of enhancing overall state capacity.Sameen A. Saleha Mohsin on how the strong dollar became the weaponized dollar.Over the last few decades, the Department of Treasury has transformed from an institution that managed the dollar, government budgets, and issued bonds into an institution playing a critical role in US national security. At the heart of this transformation was cast of characters—legislators and bureaucrats—who realised the immense power that the U.S. government could wield through the use of sanctions, including the power to wage economic war. Saleha Mohsin has covered the Treasury Department for Bloomberg since 2016. Her new book, tilted, Paper Soldiers: How the Weaponization of the Dollar Changed the World Order, was published last week and draws on interviews with more 100 current and former officials and diplomats.  The Sanctions Age is hosted by Esfandyar Batmanghelidj. April 2, 2024 - Join us for a discussion with the Senior Washington Correspondent for Bloomberg News Saleha Mohsin on her newly released book Paper Soldiers: How the Weaponization of the Dollar Changed the World Order, in cooperation with the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP). As the global order continues to evolve, it seems that the dollar's dominance may find itself waning for the first time in 70 years. In a world dividing into two camps, one led by China and the other by the U.S, Mohsin investigates America's strong dollar policy and how it has shaped the world order, the effects of America's heavy-handed sanctions on its adversaries, and how American allies like South Korea view the dollar in today's global financial system. The conversation will be moderated by former CBS White House Correspondent and NCAFP Board Member, Jacqueline Adams. Since World War II, the United States and its currency, the dollar, have come to play a central role in the broader global economy. A few weeks ago, the Indian government formally notified the rules implementing the controversial 2019 Citizenship Amendment Act, or CAA. The law provides persecuted religious minorities hailing from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan an expedited pathway to Indian citizenship, provided they belong to the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Parsi, or Sikh communities. Notably, the law does not provide such a pathway to those who belong to the Muslim faith. The notification of the CAA rules—on the eve of India's 2024 general election—has kicked off a fresh debate over the law, its implementing provisions, and the resulting implications for the future of secularism in India. To discuss all of this and more, Milan is joined on the show this week by legal scholar M. Mohsin Alam Bhat. Mohsin is a Lecturer in Law at Queen Mary University of London, where he specializes in constitutional law and human rights. Mohsin has written extensively about law and citizenship in India.Milan and Mohsin discuss the origins of the CAA, its constitutionality, and the fine print of the CAA rules. Plus, the two discuss the situation in Assam, that state's National Register of Citizens (NRC), and the prospects of an all-India NRC exercise.Episode notes:1. “What's Happening to India's Rohingya Refugees? Dalia Iskander is a Medical Anthropology Lecturer at UCL. Her specialist research areas include the body and emotion; childhood and gender; and health related decision making. She and her husband recently had a child, and this experience has made her think differently about pregnancy and parenthood. Dalia comes from a British-Egyptian-Christian background and lives in London with her family. Listen as Mohsin and Dalia discuss with Ellen and Jenn: • Mohsin growing up in a devout Muslim family where being gay was not accepted. • Meeting the love of his life, Matthew, and together wanting to be parents. • Mohsin's best friend, Dalia, offering to be a gestational surrogate for them, an offer they could hardly believe. • This journey sparked their podcast, Tiny Huge Decisions, following two best friends making this relationship-altering choice. In real estate, whoever controls the leads, controls the business - they call the shots. The rise of online lead sites like Zillow Flex means another way to generate leads, but also another entity making a claim on our earnings. The fact that a marketing company can come in and do something we can be equipped to do says a lot.    Our understanding of online leads and what the process of generating them needs to be corrected. Generating leads and taking them from the top to the bottom of the funnel is something we're all capable of with the right tools.    If we want to future proof our businesses beyond next month's and next year's deals, learning to leverage tech and generate our own leads is a must. It's how we stay relevant in the consumer's mind, and how we defend ourselves getting disrupted out of business. If not, we're doomed to basically become Zilow's showing assistants.    For Syed Mohsin, teaching agents how to become their own Zillow is his mission. He shares how technology became such a driving force in his business, and why that's key to our survival and continued success.  Quotes    The biggest brokerages and teams who are doing big numbers are leveraging technology, online lead gen and automation. -Syed Mohsin   The company that spends the most amount of money to acquire clients will always win. -Syed Mohsin   Buying leads from aggregators is only going to get more expensive, it's never going to be cheaper. -Kevin Kauffman     It's almost like Zillow is the big team and the agents who take leads are their showing assistants. -Kevin Kauffman     People quit when the person doesn't want to sell or buy right this second, but that's not the life cycle of a lead. -Kevin Kauffman     You have to be willing to play the long game with them to make the money. -Kevin Kauffman     Key Points     How tech became Syed's superpower New real estate agents are taught to generate business from the people who already know, like and trust them. When Syed dropped out of college a lot of people who already knew him didn't like or trust him. That meant he had to learn to generate business from people he didn't know, and that's how tech became such a huge factor in his business.    Real estate agents have online leads all wrong We think a lead we bought from Zillow was generated just yesterday, but they attract and nurture it for months before handing it to an agent. That would be no different if we generated the lead ourselves and nurtured it until they were ready to sell. The problem with agents is we think if a lead isn't ready to do a deal right this second, the system isn't working. The life cycle of a real estate lead is long, and the people who make money are the ones who are willing to play the long game.    Work the whole funnel  In real estate, we're either taught to work top of the funnel leads or bottom of the funnel leads, but not both. We actually have to learn the art of generating a lead and moving it from the top of the funnel right down to the bottom when they are ready to sell.    The best way to approach online leads If you're going to generate business through lead aggregators, you better not be transactional about it. Once you've done the deal, you have to put that person in your database. If not, you won't be able to get repeat and referral business, and you'll never get off the hamster wheel of buying leads.    The fight to stay relevant in the eyes of the consumer A lot of consumers don't think real estate agents add as much value as technology does. In fact, technology has left a lot of them feeling like agents aren't necessary anymore. Not only are tech companies making a claim on our commissions, they have the pieces in place to make us look obsolete in the eyes of the consumer.    Guest Info   Syed Mohsin is an agent, coach, consultant, technology expert and host of Real Estate Junkies.
