If we're gonna talk about Empowerment Self Defense, we have to talk about denial. When talking with survivors of sexual assault and survivors of other types of relational violence it is common to hear that the survivor had a funny feeling something was wrong but then doubted themselves or rationalized or minimized their intuition and flat out ignored it. This is called denial. Denial can put us at risk and because of that, breaking through denial in all the ways it manifests in our lives keeps us safer. Period. Looking at and talking about denial is directly connected to empowerment self-defense AND to our safety as we walk through the world.   Mentioned in this episode: Brené Brown, Rising Strong: The Reckoning. Today I speak to Jackie of Queenrise.com  She is an Empowerment Self Defense for Women and Teens coach.  I apologize for the dead air at the beginning before Jackie came on, some editing software did not work at the time... Enjoy its all part of being organic podcast and going with the flow my friends! Jackie reminds us that we are in charge of our bodies and we know we already know this, but have you embodied that yet?  I love how she incorporates not only physical defense strategies but also teaches you that your body is yours and you are the QUEEN of it you are in charge and you get to decide what you want to do. I talk to her about what she gives her clients and she reminds us that self defense is a focus on paying attention to what is scary, trusting our intuition or "that voice" that tells us we may be in danger.  Lets strip away all the judgements we give ourselves based on outside expectations.   One of the things that stood our when talking to Jackie is when she mentioned that "Safe" is a low bar to set for women, she doesnt just want us to feel safe, she wants us to thrive to feel worthy of being pampered, spoiled of everything that gives us joy!  Self defense is just a piece of that puzzle. We are all Queens and anything less than that does not fit into the picture! Love this all so much!  When you think about it, we all try to be something for someone, we go where they want to go, we shave our legs for a date, we do our hair...because its a little expected, but are you doing this for the date or for YOU?  Think about it.   If you want to work with or speak to Jackie, she can be reached here: https://www.queenrise.com for the free guide: https://www.queenrise.com/guide FB Jackie Hyman IG @queenrisepower

Empowerment Self Defense challenges the status quo, the balance of power, and unconscious biases. It challenges myths and attitudes, cultural norms, and beliefs. It gives participants agency and tools to question power dynamics in society, but also in their intimate relationships. Because of this, and myriad other reasons as well, there is a great deal of resistance on the part of both individuals and institutions to taking and offering Empowerment Self Defense Programs. Join me and my guest, Jocelyn Hollander as we dissect and pull apart the various hurdles and obstacles people and institutions raise as reasons to NOT take or offer ESD classes. Jocelyn is a professor at the University of Oregon. Researching the efficacy of ESD has become her life's work. She's got so much great insight!
