Ben and Roane discuss the concept of "spiritual bypass," a phenomenon where individuals use religious or spiritual language to avoid dealing with their emotional pain. They highlight how this practice is prevalent in faith communities and can be harmful, leading to a lack of accountability and genuine growth. Examples include phrases like "God's gonna use this" and "When God closes a door, he opens a window." They emphasize the importance of addressing trauma, emotional sobriety, and the need for empathy and real love. The conversation aims to challenge the spiritual bypass culture and promote genuine spiritual growth and transformation. To learn more about the Sex, God, & Chaos team, click the link below: www.sexgodchaos.com Looking for help? Bookshops and libraries are bursting with books on parenting and what to expect when you're expecting, but there aren't nearly as many guidebooks out there on how to be a good grandparent. That's why family psychologist Terri Apter has written her latest book all about the topic. Grandparenting: On Love and Relationships Across Generations offers readers an expert guide on modern grand parenting and how to overcome tricky family dynamics that might occur along the way. Apter talks to Róisín Ingle about how the first grandchild changed her family, the different types of grandmothers and how important a grandparent is in building a child's identity. But first, Irish Times journalist Ella Sloane is here to discuss some of the biggest stories of the week including new research from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre examining attitudes towards victims of sexual assault, why only half of fathers in Ireland are taking paternity leave and how pottery fever is catching in Dublin. I'm just gonna leave this right here. It's an encore presentation of an episode I dropped almost two years ago. Ep.59 is ripe for a reboot because fascism has come for America, and much of what I speak to here has become an everyday norm. I've re-recorded the intro to reflect our current reality, and I hope you listen to the end, where I take a closer look at tone policing and why it works to silence us. (Spoiler: knowledge can help us to beat them at their own game.)Ep.59 (original release date July 5, 2023)— Candice is back with another solo episode, asking some big questions: What is gaslighting? Why are so many people allergic to the word victim? And is spiritual dogma eroding accountability?  The episode opens with an exploration of spiritual supremacy and how/why social stigmas around victimhood have become so prevalent. Candice shares personally about her long and messy history with gaslighting and how devotion to new ageism only added to her confusion. She challenges the notion that all suffering is meant, then breaks down the cognitive biases that fuel a victim-blaming/shaming culture. Victimhood isn't something we choose, and it's shame-inducing because it is very often culturally conflated with learned helplessness. Examples are offered, as well as a critical look at the impossible standards that victims (and/or advocates who speak out on their behalf) are held to. Tone policing is defined and examined as a deflection of accountability, as well as other tools in the arsenal of those who are truly "playing the victim"… aka co-opt the language of the oppressed to justify retaliation in the face of restorative resistance.  Referenced in this episode:Conspirituality: How New Age Conspiracy Theories Became a Health Threat, by Derek Beres, Matthew Remski, & Julian WalkerConspirituality podcast episode #148: Marianne Williamson & Asshole JesusNicki Clyne Leaves Keith Raniere - her statementConflict Is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair, by Sarah SchulmanShiny Happy People (documentary) on Amazon PrimePunishment Is Not Accountability, article by Kate McCord with the Virginia Sexual & Domestic Violence Action AllianceSupport the showThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content. Have you ever been a victim of an attack or abuse and then been blamed for your own attack? Or unjustly scrutinized? Victim blaming is something many of us, especially women, have been conditioned to hold. Now we are seeing this in the firing of government employees given a justification of performance or lack when this is not the reason for their termination. We're seeing it in the way DEI hires are blamed for government waste and overspending. We are seeing this in the blaming of wars. And we are seeing it in the way women's rights are being stripped. If you have not experienced or are not experiencing it yourself, you have undoubtedly witnessed it happening to others, and the impact of that witnessing affects all of us and our choices. Victim blaming stifles our voices, keeps us from speaking up, keeps us in hiding and disconnected from our own truth and light. It puts a heavy energetic burden on the person who is the subject of blame. But, no matter what ever happens to any of us, we still have a power inside of us that cannot be snuffed out, one that no one can take away from us. We can reclaim it and embody it. We can live our sacred strengths. This is the topic of this Meditation & Healing Circle. Listen to this episode for an empowering healing experience. Creating legitimate points of access to justice is a cornerstone of our legal system. But when it comes to modern forms of abuse such as digital bullying or image-based sexual abuse, or even with children in the foster-care system, the path to justice is often retraumatizing, ill-equiped, or simply non-existent. My guest today is Allison Mahoney, the Founder and Managing Attorney of ALM Law, where she specializes in trauma-informed legal representation for survivors of abuse and children harmed in child welfare systems. With more than a decade of experience, Allison has built a distinguished career advocating for vulnerable children in foster care and those impacted by sexual abuse and domestic violence. Her work is defined by her deep commitment to securing justice for survivors. We discuss her early career and what drove her to pursue a line of work many of us would like to forget, why victim-blaming is so ingrained - even on a linguistic level, and what steps need to be taken to reform the system to serve the people who need it most. Enjoy the show.

The Ex-Philes: Break-ups, Broken Hearts and Moving On

TRIGGER WARNING: Victim blaming, sexual assault, domestic violence  Let me be your breakup buddy! Get direct access to my calendar here to schedule a FREE consultation. In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month I am re-dropping a VERY important episode that I did last year with one of my closest friends and fellow survivor Christine Lalonde on the ongoing abuse that is *victim blaming.” Victim blaming is the act of trying to convince a victim and the people around them that they caused and therefore deserved the abuse they encountered. It is not only determental to a person's healing, it can cause them to replay the same patterns, and it allows violence in society to continue because we put attention on the victim rather than the source. Victim blaming needs to stop. As part of the Breakups, Broken Hearts, and Moving On commitment to Domestic Violence Awareness Month I am partnering up with my good friend Christine to talk about the victim blaming that we have experienced, the impacts it had on our life, and how YOU can become part of the solution instead of the problem.

Dr. Gary Bell's Absurd Psychology

Virtually anyone who has survived sexual assault or experienced sexual harassment knows how painful victim-blaming can be. Survivors are often asked what they were wearing, what they did to “encourage” the perpetrator, or even why they didn't fight back more. Despite the recent rise of the #MeToo movement, victim-blaming remains a tenacious problem. In fact, it may be more tenacious than any of us imagined. That's because the tendency to blame the victim may be programmed into the human mind at a very basic level. Ask yourself if you've ever wondered whether the victims of a crime or accident had done something to set themselves up for their tragedy? Victim-blaming doesn't have to involve accusing survivors of directly causing their own misfortune. It can involve the simple thought that you would have been more careful, implying that the tragedy was at least partially their fault. Tune in and learn all about victim blaming and how to confront it!

She explores how these environments often manipulate individuals into believing they are responsible for their own trauma and abuse, thus perpetuating a cycle of self-blame and re-victimization. Rachel discusses the historical roots of this harmful ideology, citing examples from groups like EST (now Landmark) and Synanon, where victims were made to feel they invited their own abuse. She also touches on the troubling practices of fraudulent residential teen treatment centers and certain religious sects that use spiritual justifications to absolve abusers of responsibility. This episode is crucial for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of abuse and the destructive nature of victim blaming. These assaults were initially considered isolated incidents until victims started sharing their experiences on TikTok, revealing a shocking pattern of similar attacks. The podcast explores various aspects of these incidents, including the public's reaction, the potential reasons behind the attacks, and the broader societal implications. It highlights the lack of empathy and understanding towards the victims and delves into themes of misinformation, patriarchal violence, and the impact of social media. The episode concludes with a commentary on how these events are reflective of deeper issues within society, urging listeners to remain vigilant and engage in discussions about violence against women. Flex also touches upon an alarming trend from the past, likened to the 'knockout game', and the disturbing normalization of such acts of violence.
