Over the past two years we've all made some amazing freinds online. One friend that I've had the priveledge of getting to know and being inspired by is Eric Logan. Eric is a duathlete from Georgia and we met online back in 2020. His motivating posts helped inspired me to attempt my first duathlon and get out the door on many mornings. Eric consistently shows up and in our conversation, he shared his story on how to changed his life, how he balances a full-time job and how social media can be healthy for us. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/boia/message

NOTE: Work on this episode of South Bend’s Own Words started before the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. With respect to the uprisings in cities across the U.S. right now, we wanted to be sure their names were said. There are far too many other names to share, and our city is not immune to police violence. The murder of Eric Logan last year was only the latest in a long history. ----- The “long, hot summer of 1967” described the many uprisings in cities across the U.S. Real hurt felt by real people was large ignored by white people in positions of power. Decades of racial redlining, job discrimination, and both micro-and macro-aggressions fueled an idea that violent expression was the only recourse. In 159 cities across the U.S., a spark turned decades of oppression into violent outburst. In South Bend, Indiana, in July, 1967, a white police officer shot an unarmed African American man in the leg. His name was Melvin Phillips. That bullet sparked South Bend to join 158 other cities. Days of violent eruption followed. Today, we hear from three people who lived through, or participated in, the South Bend uprising. This episode was produced by Seth Umbaugh and George Garner. With special guests Mac Folkes and Edna Bonhomme (@jacobinoire), Ben explores the life story, politics, and cultural phenomenon of Pete Buttigieg. From his resume-polishing early life to his racist record as Mayor to his recycling of stale right-wing attacks on progressive policy, we look at how longer-term trends in gay life and culture, including the split of the "mainstream" wealthy and white gay rights movement from multiracial struggle, have influenced both his politics and the broad audience they have found. == Update, 8 March, 2020 == We are devastated by the recent death of Mac Folkes, one of our two guests on this episode. A legend of the scene, a devoted friend, and a fierce fighter for justice. Former OU basketball player turned entrepreneur Renzi Stone joins us to talk company values, importance of team, and doing that one thing today that's most important. Bio: Renzi Stone is a former University of Oklahoma basketball player turned entrepreneur, whose integrated marketing communications company has been on Inc. magazine's fastest growing companies multiple times. He has served as president for the Americas for a global network of independent marketing and PR firms. And in the spring of 2015, Renzi was appointed by Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin to the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents. Interview: Okay Renzi first things first, Olympics are wrapping up. What are your thoughts on what we've seen? Great to watch athletes meet their moment when they have trained so long, fought through injuries and challenges. Brings country together during a divided time. I hit a few highlights about you in the introduction, but give us a little backstory and what your journey has looked like to get where you are today. Wrote down things good at in one column and things not good at in the other Have to be honest with yourself Ask people; Get mentors Best way to get a mentor: ask them about them and how they did something Know the answer to the question before you ask Oprah's CEO Eric Logan: for every 15 minutes he was going to spend with Oprah, he would prepare for an hour Put a team around you to balance out your weaknesses Long hours in the early years; takes time and there's no magic bullet Couldn't be built on just his capability; had to build a team He's been the leading scorer at SAXUM since he founded it, but knows the company will only be great when that is no longer the case I remember sitting with you in your first house talking about what you wanted to do and how to go about starting a new company. We may have aspiring entrepreneurs here right now who are in the same place you were. Can you tell the story of how Saxum got started, and give some advice to those of us thinking about or just starting a new venture?
