--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/boia/message

NOTE: Work on this episode of South Bend’s Own Words started before the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. With respect to the uprisings in cities across the U.S. right now, we wanted to be sure their names were said. There are far too many other names to share, and our city is not immune to police violence. The murder of Eric Logan last year was only the latest in a long history. ----- The “long, hot summer of 1967” described the many uprisings in cities across the U.S. Real hurt felt by real people was large ignored by white people in positions of power. Decades of racial redlining, job discrimination, and both micro-and macro-aggressions fueled an idea that violent expression was the only recourse. In 159 cities across the U.S., a spark turned decades of oppression into violent outburst. In South Bend, Indiana, in July, 1967, a white police officer shot an unarmed African American man in the leg. His name was Melvin Phillips. That bullet sparked South Bend to join 158 other cities. Days of violent eruption followed. Today, we hear from three people who lived through, or participated in, the South Bend uprising. This episode was produced by Seth Umbaugh and George Garner. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We’ll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We’ll examine news reports from the past seven days and – hopefully – promote a constructive dialog.  #ANTIBLACKNESS The 2020 Presidential election has a gaggle of democratic candidate slugging out to oppose President Trump next autumn. During this week's debate, Sen. Kamala Harris admonished former Vice President Joe Biden for his opposition to school busing and his work with White Supremacist senators. Fellow candidate and South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg was forced to respond the police killing of a black male, Eric Logan, in his jurisdiction. Speaking of civil rights, the celebration of pride month concludes this weekend with World Pride Day in NY and various LGBT celebrations in major cities throughout the U.S. Gus sidestepped the Seattle festivities. In Florida, Whites unveiled a monument to commemorate the 1920 Ocoee massacre where July Perry was lynched, approximately 30 other black citizens were killed, and the remaining black residents were purged from the area. #WhiteIdentityExtremist INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE 564943#

Former OU basketball player turned entrepreneur Renzi Stone joins us to talk company values, importance of team, and doing that one thing today that's most important. Bio: Renzi Stone is a former University of Oklahoma basketball player turned entrepreneur, whose integrated marketing communications company has been on Inc. magazine's fastest growing companies multiple times.  He has served as president for the Americas for a global network of independent marketing and PR firms.  And in the spring of 2015, Renzi was appointed by Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin to the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents. Interview: Okay Renzi first things first, Olympics are wrapping up. What are your thoughts on what we've seen? Great to watch athletes meet their moment when they have trained so long, fought through injuries and challenges. Brings country together during a divided time. I hit a few highlights about you in the introduction, but give us a little backstory and what your journey has looked like to get where you are today. Wrote down things good at in one column and things not good at in the other Have to be honest with yourself Ask people; Get mentors Best way to get a mentor: ask them about them and how they did something Know the answer to the question before you ask Oprah's CEO Eric Logan: for every 15 minutes he was going to spend with Oprah, he would prepare for an hour Put a team around you to balance out your weaknesses Long hours in the early years; takes time and there's no magic bullet Couldn't be built on just his capability; had to build a team He's been the leading scorer at SAXUM since he founded it, but knows the company will only be great when that is no longer the case I remember sitting with you in your first house talking about what you wanted to do and how to go about starting a new company. We may have aspiring entrepreneurs here right now who are in the same place you were.  Can you tell the story of how Saxum got started, and give some advice to those of us thinking about or just starting a new venture? You can't ask for permission If it's disruptive, there will be naysayers You have to be honest with yourself about the opportunity Underserved market Applied what he was best at against that market Caught a wave in OKC Deciding what the most important thing TODAY to get business going GET A CLIENT! Especially if it's something you're not good at – figure it out! My observation is you have built a great team of people at Saxum over the years.  And you have grown relatively quickly. How would you describe the culture of your company, and how do you go about implementing and maintaining it along with the growth? Business is about clients and people Clients come and go, but people can be forever Values based on B-O-L-D Brave Original Lively Driven Values like integrity aren't unique for a company worth anything; price of admissions If your value words are uniquely tied to your company's value proposition, you haven't thought of them very closely How can those of us who are in entry or mid-level roles in our organizations influence those above us? e. How can we lead up? We take a tour here where Renzi interviews me (bear with us!!) Best thing to build a team is help them know/understand themselves Talk less, smile more – lesson from Burr to Hamilton in “Hamilton” You've been around great leaders much of your life. What have you learned about leadership from some of them? Three great lessons from Kelvin Sampson Touch the line Diversity uniting around a common goal Resilience, commitment, grit, determination to overcome challenges What habits have been key to your success? Balance – tough to find Committed to being great husband/father Community and church – results in making less money, but it's more important I do have one more important question to ask you, but first where can people go to learn more about you or Saxum? Renzistone33 on twitter and LinkedIn, saxum.com You have a beautiful family. Your wife LeeAnne is a dear friend of ours.  Your boys Jackson and Walker are incredible.  And yet in 2010 you lost your middle son, Isaiah, to epilepsy when he was just 11 months old.  As a parent I cannot even begin to imagine what that was like, and what it is like even today.  But in response to that loss you and LeeAnne launched the Isaiah Stone Foundation, and I want to give you an opportunity to tell us about that organization, who it serves, and how we can help. Epilepsy research Help for underprivileged kids dealing with seizures isaiahstonefoundation.com (Daniel and Adrienne Hare will match gifts from the audience up to $500!  Just enter "All-Star" in front of your name when you make the donation. cureepilepsy.org Thank Yous/Acknowledgements: Antioch Live/Clear Day Media Group – music More here.
