Global growth investor General Atlantic has agreed to acquire sustainable infrastructure firm Actis in a deal that will create a diversified investment platform with 96 billion dollars in combined assets and under management. Actis, which manages about 12. 5 billion in assets, will become the sustainable infrastructure arm within General Atlantic's global investment platform. Actis will retain independence over investment decisions and processes under the Actis brand name. So even though they're acting as two separate companies and going to operate quasi separately, General Atlantic is making a big move here on Actis and trying to expand into the renewable energy market, Phil? Philip Totaro: Yeah, General Atlantic already has substantial energy holdings, but this gives them a significant amount of exposure. It's I want to say 6 gigawatts plus of operational and another, I don't know, almost 20 plus gigawatts of pipeline in wind and solar that Actis has been involved in. This is, absolutely a big deal. And it comes on the heels of companies like BlackRock acquiring GIP, which we talked about last week. There's, there's a trend here and a pattern emerging with these, These deals where infrastructure investors seem to be getting a better sense and a better feel for renewables. They understand that even if the supply chain side of it hasn't been particularly profitable, if you're, an OEM, the independent power producers, the project developers, they're usually pretty financially solvent and healthy. And our own analysis confirms that. You're probably going to see a lot more infrastructure, investment vehicles, gobbling up independent power producers. Joel Saxum: Yeah, you always say follow the big money, right? So banks wouldn't be investing in Miami waterfront projects if they thought that the sea levels are going to raise 20 meters next year. So when you see big money making big moves like this, it's, a trend. Like you watch these, all the pension groups and the teacher's pensions and the different things around the world. Those long term investments and infrastructure is the way to go, and I think that BlackRock move, and now this General Atlantic and Actis move, this week is, gonna show that, and we're gonna continue to see some of these deals happen. Allen Hall: Cubico sustainable investments owned by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and PSB Investments has acquired Peel NRE's 50 percent stake in Peel Cubico Renewables, a UK Renewable Energy Development joint venture. The financial terms were not disclosed in this transaction. The deal includes transfer of Peel NRE's Renewable Development team to Cubico and the joint venture's current offshore wind and solar pip...

Weather Guard Lightning Tech's Chief Commercial Officer, Joel Saxum, gives his view of the state of the wind energy business from the perspective of a business development executive. The IRA bill is changing the way businesses are planning, working, and being acquired in the United States. Will that trend continue? And with the current lack of technicians, how do wind energy companies grow their businesses? This is an enlightening discussion sure to sparks conversations at the water cooler (or wind turbine). And Joel has tremendous knowledge in the wind industry and what has happened over the last couple of years. And today we get to pick Joel's brain. And get a sense of where we have gone, where we are at, and where we are likely headed in the next year or two. So Joel, welcome to the program. Joel Saxum: Welcome, I suppose, for the, I don't know, the hundredth time or so, maybe? It's, it's close to that at this point. Yeah, so Allen and I were talking in the background off air, talking about, you know, what, what is actually happening out there right now. It'd be nice to kind of drop a little bit of knowledge of. Of what, of course, I'm hearing in the, in the BD circles everybody seems to be connected somehow in this industry. And then also the general trends, all right? And we will touch on a couple of things here. Allen Hall: So if we go back two years ago to ACP in San Antonio, which is really kind of the first real kickoff. I know we had O& M previous to that. I think, I think that's right, right? So we had O& M in San Diego. And, and at that point in the industry, everybody was just coming out of COVID. Those were really some of the first events, right? We had, if we all remember in San Antonio, we had COVID tests before we could walk into the building. And what fun that was. And at that point in the, in the industry, it was like, everybody was just trying to come awake again. There was a little bit of discontinuity between organizations. You could feel that everybody's just trying to feel the way around. And technician wise, it seemed, it did seem like there was a huge competition for technicians, like, like we have seen now. And then as we progressed over the last year or two, it's really, I think, changed dramatically in terms of the number of players in the marketplace. Even if you look at the number of drone companies that we saw a couple of years ago versus today, dramatically different. In, in terms of just sort of the knowledge base is still see the same key people around in terms of like the, the business development side, it has been a little bit of a rough road, right? Even with the IRA bill has been a little bit of a rough road. Joel Saxum: Yeah, absolutely. So, I mean, the IRA bill was designed to spur on projects, right? They say that we'll, we're going to get PTC back funds back the case, basically credits back basically back the same way they were. Before the IRA bill was passed, so, you know, every 10 years put X amount of dollars into your wind farms, get them up and running again, and you'll re qualify for these credits,

What does inbound marketing have to do with large public sector projects? While it's not the typical use case we think of when someone says the phrase “inbound marketing”, the same concepts that were developed to attract, convert and close B2B customers can be used to communicate with stakeholders and secure buy-in for complex public projects. Jeff Risley and the team at Saxum call this “social permitting” and it involves four steps: Awareness Appeal Activation Advocacy In this episode, Jeff describes what social permitting is, how it's used, and the specific steps that Saxum goes through to help its clients with it as they work to build support for public sector projects. Get the details on all of this, and more, in this week's episode.

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Are you having a hard time finding the right candidates to fill roles on your team? Does your hiring process take culture fit into account? A solid hiring process is key to agency growth. Today's guest has worn many hats in her career in the agency world and has learned to always keep the recruitment pipeline full at all times. How can you manage to do this? It's a combination of various steps. Amy Pyles is the president of Saxum, an integrated digital agency that works with brands balancing purpose with profit. In her role overseeing the inner workings of the agency, Amy relies on her leadership team to create the type of culture where they set up people for success and keep the agency steering towards its goals. In this interview, we'll discuss: Building agency culture and constantly recruiting. Keep your recruitment pipeline full at all times. How to grow your agency team talent. Sponsors and Resources E2M Solutions: Today's episode of the Smart Agency Masterclass is sponsored by E2M Solutions, a web design and development agency that has provided white label services for the past 10 years to agencies all over the world. Subscribe Apple | Spotify | iHeart Radio | Stitcher | Radio FM Cultivating an Agency President from Within Amy is not the owner of Saxum but does operate the business. Her agency career started right after finishing her master's degree. She started as employee number 25 at an agency that was just starting its growth journey. It was 2008 and Twitter had just come out, Apple was about to launch the new iPod, Facebook was just opening up to work as a marketing platform for brands, and everybody was building custom websites and apps. With so much happening, it was definitively the right place and right time to enter the digital marketing space. She left the agency 8 years later as a business with 250 employees, offices across the country, and working with brands like Walmart. She started working with Saxum right away to lead their digital practice. Over the years, she led some departments, was promoted to Chief Operating Officer, and now has the role of President. Creating Agency Culture That Supports Constant Recruiting Many agencies have a hard time bringing in talent and building up the team to keep up with demand. Amy finds one of the most important elements when recruiting is having a clear purpose for your agency. Being able to connect with purpose on the talent side has been an important piece of how they recruit. Her team leverages culture as a key operational element in growing the agency. Thanks to their culture partner, Giant Worldwide, they also have a framework to manage culture and talent development. And, they take several steps to ensure their talent pipeline is always full. Remember: You should always be hiring! Sometimes agency owners will say they're having a hard time finding talent but if you go to their website there's for recruiting. This should be clear as soon as a user enters your website that you are hiring. Set up the right systems to create your recruitment pipeline and be consistent in keeping it active. At Amy's agency, everyone knows that “what gets measured, gets managed”. As you focus on operations, think about what you're measuring (and don't measure too much!). That's what will get managed. It's been pivotal in the way her team builds competency and builds the discipline needed in operations. 6 Steps to Keep Your Recruitment Pipeline Full at All Times At her agency, senior leaders are responsible for filling the pipeline for their departments. Basically, they should always have in mind at least two positions they should fill next and ensure these steps are covered: Developing relationships: Each team leader should think about where they could be developing relationships with possible recruits. This could mean keeping an eye on other agencies in case they want to “poach”. LinkedIn: Their LinkedIn is always running and Amy says they get great input from there. Paid ads: A part of any serious recruiting effort. Referrals: This is a piece people tend to lose sight of. However, the best source of freelance talent and full-time talent is from existing employees. So they try to incentivize that and hire from within their network. Internship program: They have a robust intern program that has worked great for them. Ideally, they'll have up to ten interns to grads working at the agency at any given time. Keep in mind that bringing in interns to your agency won't save you any time. In fact, it is a long-term strategy and requires a lot of time and planning to do it well. Quarterly meeting: Finally, they have a quarterly meeting where every department head goes through the pipeline. As to the question of hiring junior or more experienced staff, her agency does prefer to hire junior staff and train them. Of course, you will need to hire more experienced talent sooner or later. Keep in mind this will be the most difficult task when it comes to recruiting and integrating them, but it is a necessary step. A System to Improve Interactions as an Agency Leader Working with Giant Worldwide, Amy's agency has learned to work with its Five Voices Framework to build liberated leaders. This framework helps employees understand themselves better, understand others, and identify their blind spots. As a leader, it helps figure out how to better communicate with others and greatly improve interactions. At Amy's agency, the conversation about voice starts in the interview process. This way, interviewees understand how they will fit into a role and how they would interact within the team dynamics. Investing in Development and Promoting Your Agency Team Amy's team implements all the typical tools and growth guides managers use to encourage growth among employees. They are also big believers in real-time feedback and maintain that 1,000 small conversations lead to more growth than one big conversation. As a strategy to help people set goals and keep an eye on skill gaps, employees get an annual stipend to spend on personal development. Of course, the agency also offers training for the team. When it comes to promoting people to team leaders, Amy doesn't believe tenure necessarily dictates capability. For her, it's more about having had the right exposure to perform at the next level. It also depends on what each employee wants. Not everyone is interested in managing people. There's a place and a need in every agency for managers that lead people and for experts that make sure to deliver a great service. Transitioning Roles from Agency COO to Agency President Amy has worn several hats at Saxum, including leading their digital department, COO and more recently as the company's President. As COO, she oversaw HR admin operations, project management, and she retained the leadership of their digital practice. Most of her time was spent on project management and workflow to get all of those pieces to work together and produce for the agency. Now as President, she also oversees the creative department and client service. All services now report to her from a quality perspective and she relies heavily on each of those department leaders. Amy has worked in different roles in her past agency experiences, leading client service, project management, digital strategy, etc., and she realizes now the importance it all had to prepare her for the role of COO. It's difficult to hire someone outside who starts working as the agency COO. If you're looking to fill the position of COO, you want someone who understands the different nuances of working in your agency while bringing a systemized approach in efficiency and effectiveness. Jason has coached agency owner clients who bring in a COO from the outside by first bringing them in as a consultant. They try this for a few months until they understand how the agency operates. It's a low-commitment way of testing things out before making it official. He feels Bringing someone new in with a heavy title before they get to know and earn the trust of the team is setting them up for failure. Want the Support of Amazing Digital Agency Owners? Eric and his wife Lisa Jensen purchased 100 acres of property in Paso Robles, CA in 2001 with the intent of growing the best fruit for some of the best wineries in the area. After making wine with Justin Smith (of Saxum) for five years and Stephan Asseo (of L'Aventure Wines) for two years, the Jensens decided it was time to create their own expression with Booker Vineyard. The 2005 Vintage was Booker Vineyard's first release with the wines being made by Eric himself. The vineyard received organic certification in April of 2021. In this episode, Eric is fresh in the studio after a big night of celebrating in NYC - and he and MJ quickly jump into discussing the bottles. This conversation is unscripted and full of heart. Higher education is important to many students but paying for college can be challenging. The Vineyard Team Educational Scholarship helps college students whose parents work in members' vineyards and wineries achieve their dreams. The Smiths of Saxum and James Berry Vineyard, know that our people are vital to sustainability. Justin Smith tells the story of Juan Nevarez, a person instrumental in their wine business for over three decades, and their inspiration to donate to the scholarship fund in his name. Pebble Smith says, “The year is 1985 and we’re looking at our first harvest at James Berry Vineyard. Our family, alone, has deer fenced, laid out, staked, and planted 35 acres of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. We know there is no way we can get the grapes off and to the winery just using our family and any friends still willing to help us. Our very first thought was to call our friend Juan who was then helping the Baldwins develop their vineyard and winery. He looked at us pleading for help and said ‘no problema, I’ll be there before the sun’s up with enough men to get all your grapes off before noon.’ He was true to his word and our first harvest was the exciting start for two successful careers: our fledgling vineyard and Juan’s labor contracting business. Thirty-five harvests later and Juan and now his family, are still supplying us with skilled and trusted vineyard laborers. I know this is not the end for our relationship with Nevarez Labor but Juan’s passing has left his family and ours with a big hole in our hearts. To help heal that hole we have put forward money for the Vineyard Team Educational Scholarship Fund and we know that would have made him very happy. So in honor of Juan, Terry, Justin, Heather and I would like to honor all the Nevarez family for being such an integral part of our community.” The Vineyard Team is grateful for the Smith family’s donation which helps us reach our goal to raise $25000 in 2021. Adapting to change in an age of constant technology advances is critical in the communications profession. If we don't shift our thinking to embrace the fast, furious and unpredictable nature of today's digital strides, we risk falling behind the curve of new standards for success set by our industry peers. The Business Communicators welcomes Saxum Founder and CEO, Renzi Stone, to share his perspective on this subject and take a closer look at the implications of how ‘staying on top of our game' impacts our success as a team. No matter whether you're representing a small business or a large corporation, recognizing these realities serves to remind us of the importance of staying current: If we don't shift our thinking, digital tools are worthless. Former OU basketball player turned entrepreneur Renzi Stone joins us to talk company values, importance of team, and doing that one thing today that's most important. Bio: Renzi Stone is a former University of Oklahoma basketball player turned entrepreneur, whose integrated marketing communications company has been on Inc. magazine's fastest growing companies multiple times. He has served as president for the Americas for a global network of independent marketing and PR firms. And in the spring of 2015, Renzi was appointed by Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin to the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents. Interview: Okay Renzi first things first, Olympics are wrapping up. What are your thoughts on what we've seen? Great to watch athletes meet their moment when they have trained so long, fought through injuries and challenges. Brings country together during a divided time. I hit a few highlights about you in the introduction, but give us a little backstory and what your journey has looked like to get where you are today. Wrote down things good at in one column and things not good at in the other Have to be honest with yourself Ask people; Get mentors Best way to get a mentor: ask them about them and how they did something Know the answer to the question before you ask Oprah's CEO Eric Logan: for every 15 minutes he was going to spend with Oprah, he would prepare for an hour Put a team around you to balance out your weaknesses Long hours in the early years; takes time and there's no magic bullet Couldn't be built on just his capability; had to build a team He's been the leading scorer at SAXUM since he founded it, but knows the company will only be great when that is no longer the case I remember sitting with you in your first house talking about what you wanted to do and how to go about starting a new company. We may have aspiring entrepreneurs here right now who are in the same place you were. Can you tell the story of how Saxum got started, and give some advice to those of us thinking about or just starting a new venture? You can't ask for permission If it's disruptive, there will be naysayers You have to be honest with yourself about the opportunity Underserved market Applied what he was best at against that market Caught a wave in OKC Deciding what the most important thing TODAY to get business going GET A CLIENT! Especially if it's something you're not good at – figure it out! My observation is you have built a great team of people at Saxum over the years. And you have grown relatively quickly. How would you describe the culture of your company, and how do you go about implementing and maintaining it along with the growth? Business is about clients and people Clients come and go, but people can be forever Values based on B-O-L-D Brave Original Lively Driven Values like integrity aren't unique for a company worth anything; price of admissions If your value words are uniquely tied to your company's value proposition, you haven't thought of them very closely How can those of us who are in entry or mid-level roles in our organizations influence those above us? e. How can we lead up? We take a tour here where Renzi interviews me (bear with us!!) Best thing to build a team is help them know/understand themselves Talk less, smile more – lesson from Burr to Hamilton in “Hamilton” You've been around great leaders much of your life. What have you learned about leadership from some of them? Three great lessons from Kelvin Sampson Touch the line Diversity uniting around a common goal Resilience, commitment, grit, determination to overcome challenges What habits have been key to your success? Balance – tough to find Committed to being great husband/father Community and church – results in making less money, but it's more important I do have one more important question to ask you, but first where can people go to learn more about you or Saxum? Renzistone33 on twitter and LinkedIn, saxum.com You have a beautiful family. Your wife LeeAnne is a dear friend of ours. Your boys Jackson and Walker are incredible. And yet in 2010 you lost your middle son, Isaiah, to epilepsy when he was just 11 months old. As a parent I cannot even begin to imagine what that was like, and what it is like even today. But in response to that loss you and LeeAnne launched the Isaiah Stone Foundation, and I want to give you an opportunity to tell us about that organization, who it serves, and how we can help. Following the beatification of Bishop Alvaro del Portillo in 2014, the Church designated May 12th (the anniversary of his First Communion) as his feast day and it was celebrated for the first time in 2015. To mark the occasion, Fr. Javier del Castillo prepared a special meditation for listeners of the St. Josemaria Institute Podcast. Meditating on the nickname given to him by St. Josemaria, “Saxum,” which means “rock” in Latin, we reflect on Blessed Alvaro’s fortitude and how God sends us this gift of the Holy Spirit to help us overcome all obstacles, to become “rocks”— “a better building block for the Church wherever God has placed you.” Blessed Alvaro del Portillo was a close collaborator of St. Josemaria Escriva and his first successor as Prelate of Opus Dei.
