This week, Drewby and Yergy discuss the tragic case of Erica Green, or as she was more famously known, Precious Doe. Erica's mother, Michelle Johnson, and her new man, Harrell, murdered the little girl, decapitated her, and then disposed of her body in the woods. She was discovered by chance by authorities searching for a missing elderly man. Erica's identity was unknown for years, until the most unlikely source came forward... Harrell's own grandfather.  Support Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/themiserymachine PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/themiserymachine Join Our Facebook Group: https://t.co/DeSZIIMgXs?amp=1 Instagram: miserymachinepodcast Twitter: misery_podcast Discord: https://discord.gg/kCCzjZM #themiserymachine #podcast #truecrime Source Material: https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/columns/2012/05/14/lawsuit-blames-oklahoma-officials-for-precious-doe-murder/61073505007/ https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/6257530/erica_michelle_marie-green https://www2.ljworld.com/news/2005/aug/19/2nd_funeral_brings_closure_precious_doe_case/ https://www.muskogeephoenix.com/archives/stepdad-gets-life-in-toddler-s-death/article_b3a359b0-3ac2-5216-a0e2-706d86121828.html#:~:text=Michelle%20Johnson%2C%2033%2C%20who%20married,moved%20out%20of%20Kansas%20City https://www.koco.com/article/precious-doe-settlement-brings-changes-in-oklahoma/4292268 https://www.kmbc.com/article/okla-lawsuits-settled-in-precious-doe-case/3674609 https://fox4kc.com/news/plans-unveiled-for-childrens-memorial-at-site-of-precious-doe-murder/ https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/2005/05/09/cousin-tells-of-abuse-br-last-days-of-precious-doe-described-in-sad-detail/61943409007/ https://web.archive.org/web/20060422074952/http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/2230953560 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Erica_Green https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna27072747 https://www.columbiatribune.com/story/news/2008/12/10/mom-precious-doe-told-to/21518311007/ https://www.foxnews.com/story/not-guilty-pleas-for-mom-stepdad-of-precious-doe https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/mo-court-of-appeals/1525109.html https://ourblackgirls.com/2018/05/24/precious-doe-toddler-erica-green-was-killed-by-her-parents-17-years-ago/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsOgWL_TTis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIgZTeV8wik https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=722bPWTM6Fw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrfQ5jdLDLM https://www.muskogeephoenix.com/archives/man-who-fought-for-justice-dies/article_7981658d-5721-5757-bce0-708d9d051473.html

Listener discretion is advised. April 28, 2001 police found the headless unclothed body of a toddler and just a few days later they found her head in a garbage bag. Surely they would be able to quickly identify her because someone must be looking for their baby girl. Unfortunately she would be known as Precious Doe and would be unidentified for 4 years. If you're looking for a light-hearted episode that'll leave you feeling warm and tingly, this ain't it. Brandi starts us off with the story of a toddler whose body was discovered in the woods of Kansas City. For years, the unidentified girl was known as “Precious Doe.” Police said they were dedicated to the case, but it took outside intervention and relentless advocacy by the girl's great grandfather for her to be identified. Then Kristin tells us about the infuriating fight for justice following the murder of Jennifer Laude. Jennifer was a trans Filipina woman who was killed by an American Marine named Joseph Scott Pemberton. Jennifer's murder didn't just outrage LGBT+ advocates – it outraged anyone who was sick of American servicepeople getting special treatment in the Philippines.  Kristin (the tattooed one who is engaged to David) ends this episode with a bang. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: The documentary “Call Her Ganda” “How the Killing of a Trans Filipina Woman Ignited an International Incident” by Meredith Talusan for Vice  “Philippines Events of 2018,” Human Rights Watch “9 of Rodrigo Duterte's Most Controversial Quotes,” by Megan Trimble for US News and World Report “Revisiting the Jennifer Laude murder case,” by CNN Philippines Staff for CNN In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “‘Precious Doe' — Toddler Erica Green Was Killed By Her Parents In 2001” by Erika Marie, ourblackgirls.com “Solved: The brutal murder of Erica Green” by Mary Hallberg, maryhallberg.com “Mystery child's slaying still haunts, stirs resolve” by Christine Vendel, The Kansas City Star “Precious Doe Case: Lessons learned” by Christin Vendel, The Kansas City Star “Mother, stepfather charges in ‘Precious Doe' killing” CNN “Precious Doe Born In Prison” CBS News “Missouri: Letters were sent by ‘Precious Doe' killer to wife” The Joplin Globe “Mom at ‘Precious Doe' trial says she waited for girl to die' The Associated Press “Activist Continues Work for ‘Forgotten' Missing Persons” by Bryan Robinson, ABC News “State of Missouri, Respondent, v. The book is called Five Days: The Fiery Reckoning of an American City. It’s just been released in paperback. Six years after Freddie Gray, protests for police reform and racial equity have taken place worldwide. Derek Chauvin sits in a maximum-security prison awaiting sentencing for the murder of George Floyd, and African Americans still face threats from law enforcement that White people simply do not face. What has changed in Baltimore and around the country since violence paralyzed our city in 2015? Carrie's Intro:This week started out for me with my phone blowing up over a story from the New York Times. Erica Green, one of their education reporters, wrote a story on student suicides and other mental health issues during the pandemic.Clark County School District was front and center.Green said on Twitter that she had gotten her info from another school district leader, when she called him to ask if they were having bad mental health issues. He said no, but talk to Jesus Jara - who is, of course, the superintendent of schools at CCSD.We talk about Jara a lot. I have written about Jara. Jara was the guy who tried to put through a bill during the special summer session that would take away carryover funds from individual schools and put them in a central budget. And then when the bill received backlash, he tried to pull it, and tried to say it was the governor's idea. Or… no… the STATE superintendent's idea. Two days later, the GOVERNOR OF OUR STATE, along with the superintendent, wrote letters all but using the word “lie.”Sisolak: “Being superintendent of one of the largest school districts in the nation requires leadership — especially in the midst of a crisis,” Sisolak said. “And leadership requires honesty. Unfortunately, that is not what we get from Superintendent Jara. Clark County students, staff and families deserve better.”Ebert: “Once it became clear the proposal did not have support, Superintendent Jara disrespected our elected officials and the entire CCSD community by misrepresenting his intentions,” Ebert said. “As a leader in education, he has a responsibility to set an example for our children. Blatantly altering the truth is not only a bad example, but it's a disservice to the educators, students and families he represents.” This was after Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson ended discussion of the bill with this:"I want to... make it abundantly clear that AB2 was  exclusively the request of CCSD  to be placed on the agenda, and that request was withdrawn two hours before the actual proclamation was issued, which was too late. And so...You don't get to light a firecracker and run just before it goes off. I should also note that at the same time this was happening, CCSD Trustee Linda Cavazos was discovering that the hybrid school plan that Jara told them over multiple meetings was mandated by the State Board of Ed - was not actually required at all by the State Board of Ed.That's the backstory. He survived being fired just narrowly, and survived being censured by a parliamentary maneuver that shut the special meeting down. But Erica Green knew none of this. She was a reporter trying to get a story on mental health and the pandemic. And instead of calling one of our guests today - who is on the front lines of mental health in CCSD - she called the guy with the big title. And the guy with the big title - as he has been doing for months now - said, “At-home school is leading our kids to kill themselves.”Which is a dubious assertion at best.

When it comes to school discipline, Black girls often receive harsher treatment than whites, including referrals to enforcement. That’s the conclusion from a new analysis of federal education data by Erica Green and her colleagues at The New York Times. The project was a deeply personal one for Green, who spent two years digging into how racial and gender biases devastate the emotional well-being and academic trajectories of Black girls. How did The Times use data mining to find new insights in existing data from The U.S. Department of Education? What’s driving the growing shift from focusing on the harsh discipline of Black boys -- a problem that still needs intensive attention -- to their female counterparts? What studies, research, and nonfiction books helped inform Green’s work? This episode addresses those questions and provides practical advice to local journalists on covering gender and racial disparities in school discipline.

Few, if any, education reporters are tackling tougher issues right now than Erica Green of The New York Times, whose stories often share a common theme of focusing on the unmet needs of marginalized students. She discusses recent coverage, including how school cafeteria workers in Baltimore are feeding an entire neighborhood, concerns about a potential federal waiver that would let districts pause services for students with disabilities, and a rare look inside a juvenile detention center where young adults are being left largely unprotected from COVID-19.   What trends has she noticed in how school districts are responding to the novel coronavirus pandemic? What’s changed in her on-the-ground reporting techniques in the midst of the crisis? Why does she describe herself as a “no surprises” journalist, and how has that served her well in “speaking truth to power” — including to U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos? And what story ideas does she encourage other education reporters to explore as schools struggle in the wake of the pandemic?

Ever since she was young, Sonja Santelises has been a straight shooter who is all about the work. Raised by a family that put education first, Sonja became the CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools on July 1 -- the fifth superintendent to lead the system in a decade. Educated at Brown, Columbia and Harvard universities, Sonja previously worked as the school system’s chief academic officer, and also had stints at The Education Trust, Teach for America, The Algebra Project and the Boston public school system. As Sun education reporter Erica Green writes, Sonja takes over the school system in a tumultuous time, with losses in standardized test scores and enrollment and a strapped budget. In addition, tension surrounded Sonja’s hiring, as the school board conducted the search to replace former CEO Gregory Thornton in secret. Sonja discussed the trust-building that comes amid that fallout, and building respect with parents and students who often come from different backgrounds than her. She also talked about getting her start in education, the negative stereotypes that persist about teaching, and what she means when she says she’s an elitist.

This week on Female Trouble we’re doing something a little bit different. If you haven’t listened before, this is usually a longform conversation podcast with one guest that spans their life and career, and though this conversation generally fits that format, we centered it around a Baltimore Sun series that ran online and in print called Bridging the Divide, which is about the struggle to move past segregated schools. Bridging the Divide is a four-part series by reporters Liz Bowie and Erica Green that ran in March, examining the challenging redistricting process in Baltimore County, the struggles of a new East Baltimore school, the ways de facto segregation persist in integrated Howard County schools, and an experiment in the challenges and rewards of integration in Hartford, Connecticut. I’d highly recommend you go read those four stories, which we will link to in the show notes at baltimoresun.com/femaletrouble, and then return to this conversation, which is with Annie Milli, marketing director of Live Baltimore. Live Baltimore is a nonprofit that advocates for city living, and much of Annie’s work focuses on encouraging middle-class families in Baltimore to see the good in the neighborhood public schools they have often passed over for private schools. Annie and I only touched on a small part of what the Bridging the Divide series covers, with a focus on city schools and the series serving as a springboard for our conversation.
