Charles (also known as Buddy) was an old soul. At a very young age, he would sit and talk to his aunt like he was the same age, and he treasured his family. He loved to travel, had lots clothes, and collected all types of sneakers. He was prescribed a pain medication after a serious car accident that started him on the road to his addiction. He passed away in April 2022 when he was 34. His mother, Tawanda, copes by wearing her son's shirt every day, talking about him with others, and listening to podcasts about grief. Please Make Me Pretty, I Don't Want to Die (Princeton UP, 2022) explores tactility, sound, sensuality, and intimacy. Set across the four seasons of a year, these fresh and original poems by Tawanda Mulalu combine an inviting confessional voice and offbeat imagery, and offer an appealing mixture of seriousness and humor. The speaker of these poems probes romantic and interracial intimacy, the strangeness and difficulty of his experiences as a diasporic Black African in White America, his time working as a teacher's assistant in a third-grade classroom, and his ambivalent admiration for canonical poets who have influenced him, especially Sylvia Plath. Juxtaposing traditional forms such as sonnets and elegies with less orthodox interjections, such as prose-poem "prayers" and other meditations, the collection presents a poetic world both familiar and jarring--one in which history, the body, and poetry can collide in a single surprising turn of image: "The stars also suffer. Immense and dead, their gasses burn / distant like castanets of antebellum teeth. My open window / a synecdoche of country." Learn more about your ad choices. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Tawanda, Award-Winning Jazz Vocalist About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Tawanda Suessbrich-Joaquim, is an award-winning jazz vocalist who's recently been taking the world by storm. Her rich, instantly recognizable voice evokes the unique cultural fusion of her exotic heritage, with a Mom from Germany and a father from Mozambique and being raised in New Mexico near the Texas border. Her musical roots derived from world music - broad and diverse. And those roots have propelled her to delve deep into the essence of jazz, while at the same time giving her songs a fresh and multi-genre delivery. Her powerful and breathtaking voice led her to win the prestigious 2021 Sarah Vaughan Vocal Jazz competition. Last month she made her New York debut at the historic Birdland Jazz Club. And music critics were unanimous in praising her brilliant song choices, her unique sparkling delivery, her emotional directness, and most of all, that luminous, stunning voice. Stallworth, MDiv, program manager for the Antiracist Development Institute, Professor Dermot Groome, and Anu Gupta, founder and CEO of Be More and a systems designer for the Antiracist Development Institute. The Antiracist Development Institute came out of several Penn State Law faculty resolutions that included adopting an antiracist approach to legal education in June 2020. The Institute built on the foundational work of Dean Conway and four Black women Dean colleagues who started the Law Dean's Antiracist Clearinghouse Project in 2020. Listen as she discusses the Clearinghouse and the Institute in detail in episode 57. Professor Groome explains why the faculty decided to create a race and equal protection in the law course and explains its development and implementation. Program Manager Stallworth tells us about the new initiative of a multi-volume series called building an Antiracist Law School, Legal Academy, and Legal Profession. She shares with us the vast collaboration behind the multi-volume series and the support it has received within and outside the academy. Systems designer Anu Gupta shares how thinking about racism as a system's problem that needs system solutions will help inspire more comprehensive reform. They share the development of course content and the multi-volume series, which helps form and shape the course content. They tell us that the goal of antiracism is a world where all of us are equal and can belong with dignity and humanity. To get involved, check out their website. In the end, they share their predictions for the future of legal education in the coming decade. Professor Groome tells us the importance of teaching students about racism in the legal system. Program Manager Stallworth tells us she anticipates that more people will learn about the problems associated with questioning the merits of Black women. Finally, systems designer Gupta shares his vision for the future of legal education and how antiracism will be discussed beyond issues involving race and equal protection of the law, and integrated in the more traditional courses such as corporations, torts, and contracts.
