In this interview about grit and determination, author and former professional basketball player Dan Grunfeld tells the harrowing story of how his grandmother escaped the Holocaust during World War II. Dan goes on to describe the challenges his grandmother, grandfather, uncle, and father faced as they moved to the United States to begin a new life for themselves after the war. Unable to speak English, Dan's father, Ernie Grunfeld, used the resilience he inherited from his parents to turn himself into a high school basketball phenom who went on to become a collegiate All-American, Olympic Gold Medal winner for Team USA in 1976, and an NBA player and executive.Dan describes his personal duty to honor his grandmother, father, and their family legacy by honing his skills, body, and mind so he could be the best athlete and person he can be. He wraps up the conversation by describing his own path to becoming a standout college basketball player and his unrelenting willingness to overcome a brutal knee injury that nearly ended his chances at a professional basketball career. Dan Grunfeld is a former professional basketball player, an accomplished writer, and a proud graduate of Stanford University. An Academic All-American and All-Conference basketball selection at Stanford, Dan played professionally for eight seasons in top leagues around the world, including in Germany, Spain, and Israel. Dan is the author of the critically acclaimed book, By the Grace of the Game, and his writing has been published more than 40 times in media outlets such as Sports Illustrated, The Jerusalem Post, and NBC News. Dan earned his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2017 and lives with his wife and sons in Northern Virginia, where he works in venture capital.

Author and former professional basketball player Dan Grunfeld joins me in The Locher Room for the 16th episode in the Conversations with Alan series.Dan will be here to share the story of his father, former Milwaukee Bucks player and general manager Ernie Grunfeld who is the only athlete in NBA history whose parents survived the Holocaust. As a longtime figure in the public eye, audiences knew very little about his background. His son, Dan, in his book By the Grace of the Game, details what the Grunfeld family had to endure during the Holocaust, how basketball transformed Ernie from immigrant outcast to an Olympic gold medalist for the United States.By the Grace of the Game is a story of an ordinary family thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Surviving the horrors of the Holocaust, deceiving a brutal communist regime, and adapting to life as illiterate refugees caring for a dying son in New York City are only the beginning. The true improbability of this family story lies in the discovery of a game – the game of basketball – that unknowingly held the power to heal wounds, build bridges, and tie together generations of a fractured family. If the magnitude of an American dream is measured by the intensity of the nightmare that came before and the heights of the triumph achieved after, then By the Grace of the Game recounts an American dream story of unprecedented scale. From the grips of the Nazis to the top of the Olympic podium, from the cheap seats to center stage at Madison Square Garden, from yellow stars to silver spoons, this striking family saga traverses the vast spectrum of the human experience to detail how perseverance, love, and legacy can survive through generations, carried on the shoulders of a simple and beautiful game, a vehicle no one could have predicted. With antisemitism and attacks on Jewish people on the rise, please join us for another important conversation.Original Airdate: 10/26/2022

Mitch Kupchak grew up in a different America with parents whose upbringing in the Great Depression instilled a strong work ethic but left little time for sports. But as Mitch grew into his 6-foot-10 frame, it soon became apparent that he was destined for something special on the hardwood. As his skills caught up with his size, several college coaches came calling, and it was a simple, honest pitch from Dean Smith that convinced the young man to attend the University of North Carolina. Once at Chapel Hill, Mitch was molded into the man he became by a combination of Smith's leadership and his own diligence. This earned him a berth on the gold medal winning Team USA squad in the 1976 Montreal Olympics and a roster spot for the Washington Bullets, where he won the NBA championship with Hall of Famers Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes. Mitch battled through several serious knee injuries to win two more titles with the Showtime Lakers, and then undertook an apprenticeship under Jerry West, who prepared him for life in the front office. Kupchak eventually took over the Lakers GM role from West, winning two more championships with the Kobe Bryant-Pau Gasol team. He is now the President of Basketball Operations and VP of the Charlotte Hornets. In this episode, Mitch shares: How his upbringing built a firm foundation for successWhat Dean Smith taught him about leading a gold medal lifeWhy his Bullets teammate Ernie Grunfeld became his best friendHow Jerry West prepared him to be an NBA GMWhat he remembers from watching a 17-year-old Kobe Bryant work out for the Lakers

When Lily and Alex entered a packed gymnasium in Queens, New York in 1972, they barely recognized their son. The boy who escaped to America with them, who was bullied as he struggled to learn English and cope with family tragedy, was now a young man who had discovered and secretly honed his basketball talent on the outdoor courts of New York City. That young man was Ernie Grunfeld, who would go on to win an Olympic gold medal and reach previously unimaginable heights as an NBA player and executive. In By the Grace of the Game: The Holocaust, a Basketball Legacy, and an Unprecedented American Dream (Triumph Books, 2022), Dan Grunfeld, once a basketball standout himself at Stanford University, shares the remarkable story of his family, a delicately interwoven narrative that doesn't lack in heartbreak yet remains as deeply nourishing as his grandmother's Hungarian cooking, so lovingly described. The true improbability of the saga lies in the discovery of a game that unknowingly held the power to heal wounds, build bridges, and tie together a fractured Jewish family. If the magnitude of an American dream is measured by the intensity of the nightmare that came before and the heights of the triumph achieved after, then By the Grace of the Game recounts an American dream story of unprecedented scale. From the grips of the Nazis to the top of the Olympic podium, from the cheap seats to center stage at Madison Square Garden, from yellow stars to silver spoons, this complex tale traverses the spectrum of the human experience to detail how perseverance, love, and legacy can survive through generations, carried on the shoulders of a simple and beautiful game. Dan also shares a few interesting nuggets of information about what his dad is really like behind the scenes and his own stories from their time in D.C. Ernie Grunfeld was always more of a private figure during his tenure as Wizards' GM so this book (and interview) should help shed some light on what makes him tick. This story has always been within Dan. His grandmother who is still alive lost many family and friends during the Holocaust. His grandfather lost everyone. When Dan was young, he knew something happened within his family but didn't exactly know what. His grandmother told the stories as he got older and matured. His grandparents were Holocaust survivors who came to America and were always working. They encouraged Dan's father, Ernie to play basketball. Many people have shared stories with Dan about his family over the years. His grandparents closed their store for two weeks to see Ernie win gold in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. After surviving the holocaust, the family then had to survive Communist rule before coming to America.
