Today I talked to Sarah L Kaufman about her book The Art of Grace: On Moving Well Through Life (Norton, 2016). Grace as a word comes from Greek, conveying a sense of giving a favor as a gift or act or kindness. It's related to Hebrew and Muslim words for compassion, and is something today's society could use more of notes today's guest. Instead, we have reality TV that thrives on dis-grace. This book began as the author confesses, with her writing an appreciation of how well Cary Grant moves on screen. In this interview, we also had time to hear from the author on the “devastatingly liquid” forehand of Roger Federer, and his overall grace on and off the court. Is grace charming? So much so that Cary Grant even once deliciously said, “Even I want to be Cary Grant.” Learn why Margaret Thatcher (“Atilla the Hen”) qualifies as graceful, and how we might move past today's penchant for intolerance. Sarah L. Kaufman is an author, journalist and educator. For almost 30 years, she was a Pulitzer Prize-Winning dance critic for The Washington Post and happy to be a colleague of Judith Martin (aka Ms. Manners). Nowadays, Sarah teaches courses in Harvard's Extension School on a variety of topics. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. (https://www.sensorylogic.com). Life as we know it would be much different if it weren’t for the mysterious and miraculous mycelium. Such an impressive entity, so different than most life on earth. This fungus can destroy and give life simultaneously. Mycelium helps soil by breaking down organic matter, keeping moisture in the soil, and helping to prevent erosion. ---------------------------------- About Rachel Rachel Jessee, originally from Reno, NV has recently returned to the region after over a decade of exploring different cultures, climates and lifestyles. She currently practices regenerative agriculture and subsistence farming at Rosewater Ranch, a rural ranch just outside of Reno. Most recently she returned from two years in Morocco where she implemented and managed a 5 hectare permaculture garden within an operating 10 hectare organic olive grove and where she was also curating an on-site artist residency. There she gained priceless experience in growing food in an arid environment which has cultivated her newest passion in soil health. She is currently enrolled in Peter McCoy’s “Mycologos” course – the world’s first extensive course dedicated solely to mycology and is also a student of Harvard’s Extension School program pursuing a degree in environmental studies with a focus in agro-ecology.

In this podcast, Marcel Salathé, EPFL professor and academic director of the EPFL Extension School, addresses five common myths about online education at the EPFL Extension School.
Our guest on this podcast is Yannis Jaquet. Yannis Jaquet is a web developer and head of the web team at the EPFL Extension School. It’s fair to say “no Yannis – no Extension School”: he literally built the school’s learning platform from scratch, all by himself, and we’ll talk more about that in this podcast. Yannis studied genetics in Geneva, and after his PhD he switched over to web development. He joined the Digital Epidemiology Lab, in 2015, where he quickly became the lab’s “CTO”. When the Extension School started, Yannis was the perfect person to build the school’s platform. We’ll talk with him transitioning into web development, about how to build a platform like the Extension School, and about his new meetup group [Geneva Web](https://www.meetup.com/genevaweb/).
Leslie Browning is an award-winning author of twelve books. In her writing, she explores the confluence of the natural landscape and the interior landscape. In 2010, she debuted with a three-title contemplative poetry series. These three books went on to garner several accolades including a total of 3 pushcart-prize nominations, the Nautilus Gold Medal for Poetry, and Foreword Reviews’ Book of the Year Award. She has freelanced for several publications and has a biannual interview column in The Wayfarer Magazine in which she has interviewed dozens of notable creative figures such as Academy Award-Nominated filmmaker Tomm Moore, Peabody-winning host of On Being Krista Tippett and celebrated poet David Whyte. Balancing her passion for writing with her love of learning, Browning is a graduate of the University of London, a Fellow with the International League of Conservation Writers and sits on the Board of the Independent Book Publishers Association. In 2011, she opened Homebound Publications. She is currently working to complete an l.b.a. in Creative Writing at Harvard University’s Extension School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Leslie is joining us today to discuss her new book, To Lose the Madness: Field Notes on Trauma, Loss and Radical Authenticity. Unlike other books in her library, she wrote it with absolutely no intention of sharing it with others. This book, more than any other she has written, is meant aa conversation starter around a topic that’s important to her and society as a whole. Thus, even as a notoriously private person―she’s sharing the story of her most difficult moments with the world. In this week's episode I discuss miscarriage with Leslie and how her experience impacted both her mental health and her writing. We discuss stigma, coming out, and how the world needs more stories like hers to be told.
You could call extension schools the original MOOCs. Universities first opened these offshoots more than 100 years ago, and at the time they were innovative—throwing open the campus gates by offering night classes without any admission requirements. Extension Schools were the original attempt by higher education to offer a low-cost version for the non-elite. Thanks to a recent push towards online courses, Harvard University’s Extension School now has more students than the rest of Harvard combined. Well, unless you count the students in MOOCs, those free online courses, which are offered through a different division of the university. Let’s face it, the number of different types of degrees you could get from Harvard is getting confusing, and the same could be said for many other universities as well. EdSurge recently sat down with the dean of Harvard’s Extension School, Hunt Lambert, to ask him to sort through all these offerings and give his vision of where his school is headed.
